To save an entire webpage as one image, use your browser’s full-page screenshot command rather than taking several viewport screenshots. Firefox and Microsoft Edge include this feature; Chrome users can install a full-page capture extension such as GoFullPage. These methods capture the single page currently open—from its top to its bottom. They do not download every page in an entire website.
Choose an archive format instead if you need selectable text, links, or an offline copy. Chrome’s pageCapture extension API creates an MHTML archive, not a screenshot image.
What “save a full website” means
A full-page screenshot is a tall PNG (or another image format supplied by a tool) containing one webpage beyond the part visible in the browser window. It is useful for bug reports, design references, documentation, and sharing a visual record.
It is not a crawl of a domain. If you need every article, product page, or asset on a site, you need a crawler or export system. If you need searchable text and working links, save the page as HTML, PDF, or an MHTML archive instead of an image.

Save a full page in Firefox
Use the page menu
- Open the webpage in Firefox and wait for the content you want included to appear.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and select Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose Save full page. Firefox prepares a capture extending beyond the visible viewport.
- Select Download. Firefox saves a PNG in its default downloads folder.
Select Copy instead of Download when you need the image on the clipboard for another application. Open the downloaded file and check the bottom of the page; a missing section is a signal to try the Developer Tools method or another browser.
Use Firefox Developer Tools for more control
- Open Developer Tools (for example, with F12), then open the toolbox settings.
- Enable Take a screenshot of the entire page so the screenshot button can capture beyond the viewport.
- Use the screenshot toolbar button for a full-page image, or open the Web Console.
- Run
:screenshot --fullpage. Firefox’s helper supports options for a delay, device-pixel ratio, filename, and CSS selector; use those when a page needs time to render or when you only want a particular element.
A delay can help a page finish rendering, but it cannot guarantee that an infinite-scroll feed or an interaction-gated section will load. Verify the resulting image.
Save an entire webpage in Microsoft Edge
- Open the page in Edge.
- Right-click the page and choose Screenshot. You can also start Screenshot from Edge’s Settings or press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Choose the full-page capture option in the Screenshot interface.
- Use the overlay to copy the image or save it. Edge also provides markup tools before you save or copy.
Microsoft describes this tool as capturing the parts of a full webpage that would otherwise require scrolling. Availability and functionality may vary by device type, market, and browser version. Edge notes that moving content such as GIFs or carousels can remain on screen during capture, so inspect the saved image when animation matters.

Use a full-page extension
The researched Chrome option is GoFullPage, listed in the Chrome Web Store as a whole-page screen-capture extension. Install it only after checking its current permissions, change log, and export choices; extension capabilities can change with updates. After installation, open the target page, activate GoFullPage from the Extensions menu, let it scroll and assemble the page, then save the generated image using the format offered by the current extension version.

If your organization prohibits extensions, use Firefox or Edge for a built-in image capture, or use an automated API. Do not confuse Chrome’s pageCapture API with screenshot software: it produces an MHTML file that encapsulates the page and its resources. MHTML is useful for an offline, browsable copy, but it is not a PNG, JPEG, or WebP image.
Pages that do not capture cleanly
No documented method should be treated as universal. Before relying on a capture, inspect it for these cases:
- Lazy-loaded images: Images may appear only after scrolling. Scroll through the page first, wait for them, and capture again.
- Infinite scrolling: There may be no fixed bottom. Capture the portion that has loaded, or use a tool that lets you set a wait condition and a deliberate stopping point.
- Nested scroll areas: A page can have an inner panel with its own scrollbar. A full-page command may capture the outer document but not every hidden panel state.
- Animations and carousels: The frame visible at capture time may be saved. Pause motion when possible and check the result.
- Protected pages and bot checks: A browser may show a challenge, blank response, or login screen instead of the intended content. Confirm that you are authorized to access the page.
- Very tall pages: The resulting raster can be difficult to read when scaled to fit. Crop it into sections for a report, or choose PDF/HTML when text readability is more important than a single image.
Make the image readable and useful
Prepare the page
- Wait for fonts, charts, and images to finish loading.
- Dismiss overlays that obscure content, unless the overlay itself is what you are documenting.
- Set the browser zoom and window width deliberately; responsive layouts can change substantially between viewports.
- Scroll through lazy content once before capturing.
Check the result
- Open the saved image at 100% zoom.
- Check the top, middle, and bottom for clipped sections, duplicated strips, blank areas, and missing images.
- Confirm that text is legible at the intended display size.
- Retake the shot after changing the viewport, waiting longer, or using a different browser if anything important is absent.

Troubleshooting common failures
The capture stops halfway
The page may use lazy loading, infinite scroll, or a nested scrolling container. Scroll the page manually first, wait for images, and retry. If the page still has no stable bottom, capture a defined element or use a PDF/HTML workflow.
The image contains a cookie banner or chat bubble

The API response is not an image
Check the HTTP status, URL encoding, and API key. Save the response only after a successful request; an error body can otherwise be mistaken for an image file. Review the exact options and authentication format in the API documentation.
