Use Figma’s hosted remote MCP server unless you specifically need a local connection. In VS Code, add https://mcp.figma.com/mcp through the MCP configuration, start the server, authorize Figma, and then give your coding assistant a link to the exact Figma file, frame, or layer. MCP supplies structured design context; your AI assistant still writes and adapts the implementation code.

What Figma MCP does in VS Code

Figma MCP is a bridge between Figma and an AI coding client. It can extract frames, components, layouts, variables, tokens, and related design context, then return that information to the assistant working in your repository. The assistant uses the context to propose or modify HTML, CSS, React, or other project code.

It is not an automatic exporter that guarantees a pixel-perfect result. As Figma states, “The MCP server is not a one-click ‘design to perfect code’ tool.” The model must still interpret the design, choose implementation details, fit the result to your existing architecture, and resolve visual or functional problems. See Figma’s explanation of MCP versus the agent.

Prerequisites and access checks

  • A Figma account that can view or edit the file you intend to use.
  • A VS Code MCP client setup that supports adding an HTTP MCP server. Figma’s setup documentation does not establish a universal minimum VS Code version or a separate required extension beyond the client configuration described there.
  • A client listed in Figma’s MCP Catalog for the hosted remote server. Figma says only catalog clients can connect to that service.
  • An account plan and seat type with available MCP allowance. Limits and eligibility can change, so verify your seat in Figma’s live access and rate-limits table.

Permission is inherited from Figma: MCP cannot expose a file, page, or layer that your account cannot already access. A link to a restricted file therefore fails even when the server connection is healthy.

Recommended method: connect the remote Figma MCP server

Figma recommends the hosted server for the typical workflow. It does not require the Figma desktop application and offers the broadest feature set. Follow these steps in VS Code.

  1. Open the Command Palette. Use MCP: Open User Configuration for a connection available across projects, or MCP: Open Workspace Folder MCP Configuration to limit it to the current workspace. VS Code prompts you to create mcp.json if the file does not exist.
  2. Add the server entry. Insert this configuration without changing the endpoint:
{
  "inputs": [],
  "servers": {
    "figma": {
      "url": "https://mcp.figma.com/mcp",
      "type": "http"
    }
  }
}
  1. Start the server. Use the Start control displayed above the figma server entry in the MCP configuration view.
  2. Authorize in Figma. Follow the access prompt that opens. Complete the sign-in and consent flow with the Figma account that has access to the target file.
  3. Confirm the connection. Your client should show the server as running and expose its available tools. If no tools appear, use the troubleshooting section below before changing the JSON.

Keep the server configuration free of access tokens unless Figma’s current client flow explicitly asks for one; the documented remote setup uses the authorization prompt.

Give the assistant the right Figma context

Copy a link to the exact node

In Figma, select the relevant file, frame, component, or layer and copy its link. Paste that URL into your VS Code assistant prompt. Figma says the client extracts the needed node ID from the link; it does not browse the page as a human would. A link to the exact screen or component is therefore more reliable than a general file link.

Describe the implementation task

Ask for a concrete result, such as “Implement this frame as a responsive React route using the existing Button and Modal components.” State the framework, entry point, styling conventions, breakpoint rules, accessibility requirements, and any files the assistant should inspect. Mention whether the linked node is a mobile, tablet, or desktop state.

Supply design-system context

A well-structured Figma file, documented variables, and Code Connect mappings help the assistant reuse real project components instead of inventing lookalikes. Explain naming conventions and component locations in your prompt. Context improves the result but does not guarantee exact visual parity.

Review and iterate in the repository

MCP returns design information and a code starting point. The assistant must still create files, adapt layouts to your application state, wire interactions, and run your normal checks. Compare the rendered page with the Figma frame, then ask for targeted corrections rather than repeatedly requesting a complete rewrite.

Remote versus desktop MCP

Decision point Remote server Desktop server
Figma app running No Yes; keep the Figma desktop app open with the active file
Endpoint https://mcp.figma.com/mcp http://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp
Feature coverage Figma’s recommended, broader option Some tools are unavailable because they are remote-only
VS Code setup Configure mcp.json and authorize Use MCP: Add Server, add the HTTP endpoint, and choose global or workspace scope
Additional requirement Client must be in Figma’s MCP Catalog Figma’s desktop guide says GitHub Copilot must be enabled for MCP use in VS Code
Government availability Not the supported route for Figma for Government Figma for Government supports desktop only

Desktop setup steps

  1. Open the Figma desktop app and the design file you want to inspect.
  2. Switch the file to Dev Mode.
  3. In the inspect panel, enable Figma’s MCP server.
  4. In VS Code, run MCP: Add Server, choose an HTTP server, enter http://127.0.0.1:3845/mcp, and assign an ID such as figma-desktop.
  5. Choose whether the server is global or limited to the current workspace, then start it.

Use desktop when local-only operation or an organizational policy requires it. Do not assume it has the same tools as the hosted service.

Plans, seats, permissions, and rate limits

Figma’s published allowances are volatile and can change. The figures below are the limits listed in its access documentation (accessed 2026); check the live page before planning automation.

Seat and plan Published allowance
View/Collab seat, Starter Up to 20 tool calls per month
View/Collab seat, Professional, Organization, or Enterprise Up to 6 tool calls per month
Dev/Full seat, Starter Up to 200 calls per day and 10 per minute
Dev/Full seat, Professional Up to 200 calls per day and 15 per minute
Dev/Full seat, Organization or Enterprise Up to 600 calls per day and 20 per minute
Education plan Professional Dev/Full limits: up to 200 calls per day and 10 per minute

These are not universal guarantees. Your seat, plan, permissions, client support, and Figma’s current policy determine what works. If a tool is missing, first verify access to the linked node and consult the current matrix.

What MCP can and cannot do

  • Design-to-code: retrieves Figma structure and context for implementation in your codebase.
  • Code Connect: can expose mappings so an assistant can select existing production components.
  • Code-to-canvas: captures a running UI into editable Figma frames; it is a different workflow with its own client support. See Figma’s code-to-canvas guide.
  • Write-to-canvas: lets supported agents create or modify native Figma objects, subject to seat and permission boundaries. See the write-to-canvas documentation.
  • Not automatic debugging: MCP does not repair broken code, infer every product rule, or replace visual review.

For better input, follow Figma’s guidance on structuring files for code generation and the documented tools and prompts.

Troubleshooting missing tools and failed connections

No Figma tools appear

  • Confirm the server is started in VS Code and that the JSON uses the exact hosted URL or local endpoint.
  • Check that your client is supported by Figma’s MCP Catalog for remote use.
  • Verify your seat, plan, file permission, and remaining allowance.
  • Restart VS Code after correcting the configuration.

Desktop tools do not load

Confirm that Dev Mode’s MCP switch is enabled, the Figma desktop app is running, and the intended file is open and active. Check that VS Code points to 127.0.0.1:3845/mcp, not the hosted URL.

Remote-only tools are missing

If both remote and desktop servers are configured, a client may connect to desktop first. Figma specifically warns that tools such as use_figma or generate_figma_design can then be unavailable. Stop or remove the conflicting server, select the remote connection, and restart both applications.

The assistant reports a model or timeout error

Figma says the failure may be in the assistant’s model connection or a timeout rather than MCP itself. Retry with a smaller, specific request, check the model provider status, and then restart the client. Figma’s troubleshooting page is at tools not loading.

The assistant cannot read the linked frame

Make sure the link points to a node you can open in Figma, not a deleted or restricted layer. Share the file or adjust permission through Figma, then paste the node link again.

If your goal is to capture a rendered reference rather than pass editable Figma structure to an agent, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP tools—take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf—work with Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Practical workflow for reliable results

  1. Choose one server route and disable the other while diagnosing connection problems.
  2. Link the smallest useful Figma node instead of an entire project file.
  3. State the target framework, component library, responsive behavior, and acceptance criteria.
  4. Ask the assistant to inspect existing components before creating new ones.
  5. Implement in small slices, render locally, and compare against the linked frame.
  6. Use Figma variables, Code Connect, and file-structure conventions to improve subsequent iterations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Figma MCP without the Figma desktop app?

Yes. The hosted remote server works without the desktop app. The desktop route specifically requires the app, an active file, and Dev Mode.

Does Figma MCP write the final production code automatically?

No. MCP supplies design context and a starting point; the coding assistant generates, adapts, tests, and debugs the implementation.

Why does the same Figma link work for one teammate but not another?

MCP follows each user’s Figma permissions, seat type, plan, and remaining rate allowance. Access is not granted merely by possessing the URL.
