In GitHub Copilot CLI, first inspect the exact server entry with /mcp show github-mcp-server, then read the client log, verify which endpoint and configuration are active, and check credentials in the process that launched the client. Reports from Copilot CLI and Codex show several different failure patterns, so there is no evidence for one universal relogin, certificate, network, or upgrade fix.
What the error actually tells you
GitHub identifies github/github-mcp-server as its official MCP Server project. A short startup warning only says that the client could not establish the MCP connection. It does not tell you whether the failing entry is a workspace configuration, a built-in server, an authentication setup, a transport problem, or a client-specific defect.
Use the server name printed by your client as the starting point. Do not assume that every entry labelled “GitHub MCP” points to the same service.
1. Inspect the exact entry in Copilot CLI
- In GitHub Copilot CLI, run
/mcp show github-mcp-server. This is the command shown in the CLI error guidance. - Record the entry’s type or transport, URL, status, and complete error text.
- Repeat the command for any other GitHub-looking name, such as
github. Compare the names rather than relying on a generic label.
A March 25, 2026 Copilot CLI report showed an HTTP entry at https://api.business.githubcopilot.com/mcp/readonly with status failed and error fetch failed. That is a reported endpoint and symptom, not a universal endpoint or root cause. See issue #2282.

2. Read the client logs, not just the banner
Locate the logs for the specific Copilot CLI process that emitted the warning. Search around the first failed connection for the server name, URL, transport, HTTP status, and any nested exception. A May 21, 2026 Windows report records the remote client starting, the transport closing, and then TypeError: fetch failed. The detailed sequence is more useful than the one-line warning, but it still does not identify the underlying cause by itself.
Save the version, operating system, timestamp, endpoint, and relevant log lines before changing settings. Those details make a later issue report reproducible.
3. Check whether two GitHub entries are configured
One Copilot CLI report describes a workspace entry named github at https://api.githubcopilot.com/mcp/ alongside a separate built-in github-mcp-server entry at https://api.enterprise.githubcopilot.com/mcp/readonly. The author reported that the workspace entry failed while the built-in entry appeared operational; the report does not prove that having two entries inherently causes failures.
Build a small comparison before editing anything:

Use the name in the error message to decide which row to investigate. Avoid deleting a working entry until you know which projects depend on it.

4. Verify authentication in the configuration actually used
Credentials must be available to the process that starts the MCP client. Check the configuration file, environment-variable name, and shell or service environment used at launch. A GitHub MCP Server issue filed by a Codex user shows a startup error explicitly stating that the configured github_pat_(token) environment variable was not set; its sample configuration uses bearer_token_env_var. That is a concrete missing-variable failure in that Codex setup, not proof that Copilot CLI uses the same keys or configuration format. Read issue #1633 for the reported example.
- Confirm the variable name matches the configuration character-for-character.
- Set it in the same user, shell, container, service, or IDE environment that launches the client.
- Restart the client after changing an environment variable.
- Do not paste token values into logs or issue reports; record only the variable name and whether the process can read it.
5. Interpret HTTP and network checks carefully
In the Windows report associated with Copilot CLI 1.0.51, the user said that curl and ordinary Node.js fetch requests to the endpoint returned HTTP 401. The user treated that response as evidence that the endpoint was reachable. They also reported that a fresh login and testing Node with system certificate authorities did not resolve the CLI error.
A 401 can show that a request reached an HTTP service, but it does not prove that the CLI is sending the same headers, using the same proxy, negotiating the same TLS path, or selecting the same endpoint. Treat such probes as observations about that request, not as an official diagnostic guarantee.
6. Check version and issue status before changing versions
The Windows case was filed against Copilot CLI 1.0.51 and remained open in the material available for this article. It documents a platform- and version-specific symptom; it does not confirm a regression, a maintainer-approved workaround, or a fixed release. Check the current issue and release information before recommending an upgrade or downgrade:

Copilot CLI issue #3455 records the “fetch failed” report, its May 21, 2026 date, and the reporter’s tests. Do not promise that installing a particular version will solve your connection until GitHub documents that corrective action.
Symptom-to-check guide
“fetch failed” immediately after startup
Capture the endpoint, transport, operating-system version, client version, and surrounding log stack. Compare a direct probe only as supplemental evidence. The available Windows report does not establish whether certificates, proxy behavior, authentication, or a client defect caused the failure.
A workspace github entry fails but built-in github-mcp-server works
Inspect both entries separately. Confirm which scope your project loads and whether the URLs are different. A working built-in entry does not validate the workspace endpoint, and a failing workspace entry does not prove the built-in service is broken.
Startup says an environment variable is unset
Follow the variable named in that exact error and confirm the launched process inherits it. The Codex report’s github_pat_(token) example should not be copied into Copilot CLI without checking that client’s documentation and configuration.

Fresh login changed nothing
Record that result and continue with entry inspection and logs. The Windows reporter said a fresh login did not fix the problem; this is evidence against assuming that reauthentication alone resolves every case, not evidence that login is irrelevant to all configurations.
Safe diagnostic checklist
- Copy the exact error and server name.
- Run
/mcp show github-mcp-serverand inspect every field. - List similarly named workspace and built-in entries.
- Read the full client log for transport closure and nested errors.
- Verify the configured credential variable in the launching environment.
- Note operating system, client version, endpoint, date, and any proxy or certificate settings.
- Check the linked GitHub issue and current release status before changing versions.
- Redact tokens, cookies, authorization headers, and private repository data before sharing diagnostics.
What not to claim from these reports
The reports do not provide a prevalence rate, success percentage, or single confirmed fix. They also do not establish that duplicate entries always conflict, that every 401 means healthy connectivity, or that a certificate switch, relogin, upgrade, or downgrade works for all users. Enterprise hostnames may apply only to particular accounts or configurations.
