Use Power Automate Desktop’s browser action Take screenshot of web page when you need the webpage itself rather than a picture of the monitor. After launching or attaching to a supported browser, choose Entire web page or Specific element, then save the result to a file or the clipboard.
This guide shows the exact flow, explains the difference between webpage and desktop screenshots, and covers setup, unattended runs, failures, and an API alternative.
What Power Automate Desktop can capture
Power Automate Desktop has three related actions. Selecting the wrong one is the most common source of an unexpected image.

Browser automation uses webpage-captured elements. UI automation uses desktop UI elements. A selector captured in one technology is not automatically valid in the other.

Before you build the flow
Install and configure a supported browser
Create a browser instance by launching or attaching to Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox. Power Automate Desktop requires the appropriate browser extension and configuration for the browser you automate. Microsoft also documents WebDriver as another browser-interaction method.
Use the same Windows user
Browser automation cannot open a browser under a different system user or attach to a browser opened by another system user. Start the browser from the account that will run the flow, or launch it from the flow itself.
Know when focus matters
Browser actions normally do not move the mouse and can run while the browser is minimized or another tab is focused. Navigation or actions that require physical interaction may need the browser window focused; this is separate from the screenshot action itself.
Step-by-step: capture an entire webpage
- Open Power Automate Desktop and create a new desktop flow, or open the flow that should contain the capture.
- Create a browser instance. Add the browser-launch action for your browser, or add the action that attaches to an existing browser. Store the result in a variable such as
%Browser%. - Navigate to the page. Use the browser navigation action and provide the complete URL. Add your normal login, consent, or page-wait steps before taking the screenshot.
- Add the screenshot action. In the Actions pane, search for Take screenshot of web page and drag it into the flow.
- Select the browser instance. In the action’s browser-instance field, choose
%Browser%, or the variable created by your launch or attach step. - Set Capture to “Entire web page.” This captures the webpage content rather than only the pixels currently visible in the browser window.
- Set Save mode. Choose File to write an image, or Clipboard to pass the capture to another action.
- For File output, provide a full path and format. For example, use a writable folder and a filename such as
C:Automationshotshome.png. The action lists BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, and WMF formats. - Save and run the flow. Check the output file or paste the clipboard image into an application that accepts images.
Use a unique filename when the flow runs repeatedly. A timestamp in the name prevents one run from overwriting another and makes failed-run diagnosis easier.

Capture one webpage element instead
- Create or attach to the browser instance and navigate to the target page.
- Capture the target as a webpage element with the browser recorder or element picker. Do not pick it with the desktop UI-automation picker.
- Add Take screenshot of web page and select the same browser instance.
- Set Capture to Specific element.
- Choose the saved webpage element, then select File or Clipboard output.
- Run the flow and verify that the element is present in the page state reached by the flow.
This is useful for a product card, invoice region, chart, table, or confirmation panel. If the element is created after a delay, add a wait for the element or otherwise synchronize the flow before the screenshot step.
When you actually need a desktop screenshot
Foreground browser window
Use the workstation Take screenshot action and choose Foreground window. This records what Windows is displaying, including browser chrome, toolbars, and anything covering the page. It is not equivalent to a webpage capture.
A monitor or all monitors
The same workstation action can target All screens, Primary screen, or a selected screen. Choose this when the requirement is a desktop audit, multi-monitor record, or evidence of the complete visible workspace.
A desktop control
Use Take screenshot of UI element when the target is a desktop UI element in a window. This uses a desktop element captured through UI automation, not a webpage element captured through browser automation.

File versus clipboard output
Choose File when
- The image must be archived, attached to an email, uploaded, or consumed by another process.
- You need a deterministic path for later steps.
- The flow runs unattended and no interactive clipboard is guaranteed.
Choose Clipboard when
- The next action pastes the image directly into an editor, document, ticket, or chat.
- You do not need a persistent file.
- The run has access to the intended interactive desktop session.
For file output, verify that the directory exists and that the account running the flow can write there. For clipboard output, make sure another process is not replacing the clipboard between the screenshot and paste actions.
Reliability for scheduled and unattended flows
Synchronize page state
A screenshot taken immediately after navigation may show a loading shell or incomplete content. Wait for the page or target element your process actually needs. For a specific-element capture, treat “element not found” as a synchronization problem first.
Separate navigation from capture
Keep browser launch, navigation, authentication, page readiness, and screenshot steps separate. This makes it clear whether a failure occurred before the page loaded or during image creation.
Capture diagnostic evidence
For an unattended failure, add a workstation Take screenshot immediately before and immediately after the suspected action. Use different filenames, such as before-shot.png and after-shot.png. These images show whether the browser reached the expected page and whether a prompt or overlay interrupted the run.

Check blocking prompts
A User Account Control prompt can block UI automation. If a run stops while interacting with Windows, inspect the session for a UAC dialog and arrange the run so that privileged prompts do not interrupt the automation.
Troubleshooting common errors
“Selected element” cannot be found
- Confirm that the element was captured as a webpage element, not a desktop UI element.
- Verify that the flow is using the correct browser instance and tab.
- Wait for the page or element to finish loading before the screenshot action.
- Recapture the element if the site changed its structure or the saved selector is stale.
The screenshot itself fails
- Confirm that the browser instance is valid and still open.
- Run the navigation and screenshot interactively once to identify redirects, authentication pages, or browser-extension problems.
- Check the before-and-after diagnostic captures to determine whether the failure is page state or image creation.
The file cannot be saved
- Use a full path, including the filename and extension.
- Check that the directory exists and is writable by the flow’s Windows account.
- Try a simple local folder to rule out a disconnected network path or permission issue.
- Confirm that the selected image format matches the filename you intend to create.
The clipboard save fails or the paste is blank
- Prefer File output for unattended runs.
- Ensure an interactive desktop session is available for clipboard operations.
- Paste immediately after capture and check that another application has not replaced the clipboard.
The image shows the desktop instead of the page
You used a workstation screenshot action. Replace it with Take screenshot of web page and select Entire web page or Specific element.

Power Automate Desktop checklist

Frequently Asked Questions
Does “Entire web page” mean only the visible browser viewport?
No. It is the webpage-capture option for the page content; use the workstation action when you need the visible screen or foreground window.
Can I capture a page element and save it directly as a PNG?
Yes. Choose Specific element, select the webpage element, choose File, and select PNG as the image format.
Which action should I use for a browser toolbar or address bar?
Use the workstation Take screenshot action, normally with Foreground window, because browser chrome is desktop-window content rather than webpage content.
