To screenshot a website, choose whether you need the visible screen, a selected region, one page element, or the entire page. For a quick capture, use your computer’s normal screenshot shortcut. For a full-page or element capture without stitching images together, Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool and Developer Tools can capture more than the visible viewport.
Choose the kind of website screenshot you need
“Screenshot a website” can mean several different things. Pick the capture scope before you begin: it determines whether a standard operating-system screenshot is enough or whether you need a browser tool.

A full-page capture is not automatically a better record: it may include sections you do not need, while shrinking the text in the resulting image. Conversely, a viewport capture cannot show content farther down the page. If a long page’s content is inside its own scrolling panel rather than the main page, select that element or use the site’s export function when one is available.
Take a website screenshot in Firefox
Firefox offers a built-in screenshot interface for selecting a region, choosing a detected page element, or saving the full page. Mozilla says the tool can capture visible parts of web pages or full web pages and lets you copy or save the image. The documented interface labels and shortcuts may change over time, so if a label differs in your version, use the screenshot controls available in your browser.

Capture a selected region or detected element
- Open the page in Firefox and wait for the content you want to show to appear.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot. You can also open the tool with Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + S on macOS.
- To capture a region, drag across the area you want. To capture a detected page element instead, move the pointer until the desired element is highlighted, then click it.
- Review the selection before saving or copying the screenshot. If the selected region cuts off a heading or edge, make a new selection with a little more margin.
The region method is useful when you want control over exactly what appears in the image. Element capture can be more convenient for a distinct page component, but page layout and nested elements can affect which area is highlighted. Check the highlighted selection rather than assuming the browser has chosen the intended boundary.
Save the entire page
- Open the Firefox screenshot interface using the right-click menu or keyboard shortcut above.
- Choose Save full page.
- Find the saved image in Firefox’s normal download location. If you need it immediately in another application, the screenshot interface can also copy the result to the clipboard.
Full-page capture is useful when a reader needs the entire sequence of content in one image. It is less suitable when you need a page’s original structure or selectable text: the result is an image, not a live copy of the page. For a long page, zoom in on the saved result to check that the text remains legible at the size at which you intend to share it.
Capture the whole page or one element with Developer Tools
Firefox Developer Tools provide another route when you want a developer-oriented capture. The Toolbox screenshot button may need to be enabled in Toolbox settings. Firefox Source Docs describes Developer Tools as able to capture either the entire page or a single page element.

Capture the entire page
- Open Firefox Developer Tools and open the Toolbox settings.
- If the screenshot control is not visible, enable the screenshot button in those settings.
- Use the screenshot button to capture the entire page, then check the saved file in Downloads.
Capture a specific DOM element
- Open Developer Tools and select the Inspector.
- Locate the element you want in the page or Inspector.
- Open the element’s context menu and choose Screenshot Node.
- Check the saved file in Downloads and confirm that it contains the intended element.
Use Screenshot Node when the target is a particular DOM element and selecting it in the page is awkward. If you only want a visual crop rather than a specific element, the regular region selector may be faster. Developer Tools expose controls intended for inspection and are therefore a natural fit for repeatable development or debugging work.

Prepare a page before taking a full-page screenshot
A capture records what the browser has rendered; it cannot include content that never loaded or reveal content hidden behind an overlay. A short preparation pass can prevent the most common full-page surprises.
- Wait for the page to finish loading. If text, images, or embeds are still appearing, give them time before capturing.
- Scroll through the page first. Some pages request images and sections only when they approach the viewport. Scrolling through the page gives that lazy-loaded content a chance to load before you capture it. If you skip this, below-the-fold images may be missing or remain as placeholders.
- Clear transient obstructions where possible. Close cookie banners, chat widgets, or menus that cover the information you need. If you cannot dismiss one, consider a region or element capture that excludes the obstruction.
- Check for nested scrolling. A panel with its own scrollbar may not be included as you expect in a full-page capture of the outer page. Capture the relevant element or look for a site-provided export instead.
- Inspect the saved image at 100%. Check the top and bottom, sticky headers, overlays, missing images, and whether the text is readable. Re-capture if the image would mislead someone who was not looking at the live page.
Scrolling is not a guarantee that every dynamic item will appear: a page may load content only after a particular interaction or depend on a state that has changed. Treat the saved image as a record of the page’s rendered state at capture time, not as proof that every possible page state is represented.

When to use a website screenshot API instead
Browser controls are a good fit for one-off captures made by a person. Troubleshoot a bad or incomplete screenshot
- Images below the fold are missing or placeholders remain: the page may load images lazily. Scroll through the page, wait for the images to appear, and take a new screenshot.
- A banner or widget covers the content: close the cookie banner, chat widget, or menu before capture. If it cannot be closed, select only the area or element you need, or use an API that removes supported overlays.
- The screenshot stops at the visible screen: use Firefox’s Save full page option or its Developer Tools screenshot control rather than the operating system’s normal visible-screen capture.
- The wrong component is selected: in the screenshot interface, confirm which element is highlighted before clicking. In Developer Tools, inspect the selected node and use its context menu’s Screenshot Node command.
- A scrolling panel is incomplete: the panel may scroll independently of the page. Capture the relevant element or use the website’s own export feature if available.
- The full-page image is hard to read: capture a region or element instead, or share more than one image. A single tall image can make small text difficult to inspect.
- An API response is not a usable screenshot: inspect
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billed. A bot check, CAPTCHA, blank page, timeout, failed load, or cache hit can explain why a response is not a newly captured clean page.
How to choose a reliable capture workflow
For a one-time bug report, a visible screenshot is usually the quickest route. Use a region when context around one detail matters, and an element capture when the page component itself is the subject. For long-form review, a full-page capture is convenient, but first scroll the page and inspect the final image carefully. When screenshots need to be generated repeatedly by code or an AI agent, an API or MCP workflow is more suitable than repeating browser steps by hand.
Whichever route you use, make the captured state understandable: include enough surrounding context to identify the relevant content, avoid sharing an image with an overlay hiding the point, and verify the saved result rather than assuming the capture matched the live page.
