To collect records from a GraphQL API with Python, send documented POST requests to the provider’s GraphQL endpoint, put changing values in a separate variables object, inspect both data and errors, and paginate according to that API’s schema. GraphQL is not a shortcut around authentication or access controls. The service schema determines which fields and relationships you may query, while the provider’s terms, credentials, rate limits, and pagination contract determine how you may collect them.
What “scraping” a GraphQL API means
In this context, scraping normally means making supported API requests and processing the returned records. You are not parsing rendered HTML, guessing database tables, or bypassing a login. A GraphQL service exposes a schema: a strongly typed, self-describing definition of operations, arguments, object types, and relationships. Your query selects the fields you need, including nested data when the schema permits it.
GraphQL does not grant access to arbitrary underlying records. The endpoint may require an API token, restrict introspection, expose different fields to different clients, or impose query-cost and rate limits. Before writing a collector, confirm the official endpoint URL, authentication method, schema reference, acceptable-use terms, pagination model, and current limits.
Build one small, valid Python request
1. Identify the endpoint and credentials
An /graphql path is common but not universal. Use the provider’s developer documentation rather than copying a browser request that might contain someone else’s private credentials. Store tokens in environment variables or a secret manager, not in source code.

2. Write a named operation
Start with only the fields your task needs. Named operations make logs and error reports understandable. Keep dynamic IDs, dates, search terms, and cursors out of the query text; declare them as GraphQL variables.
3. Send a JSON POST
GraphQL-over-HTTP requires servers to support POST with a JSON body containing a query. The body may also include operationName, variables, and extensions. For broad response compatibility, send an Accept header containing application/graphql-response+json and application/json;q=0.9. Follow provider-specific examples if they require additional headers.

print(items["nodes"])This is a client-side pattern; replace the endpoint, operation, fields, argument types, and authentication with the target API’s documented values. requests serializes the JSON body for you. A successful HTTP status does not prove that every selected field succeeded.
Pass variables safely
Variables separate changing values from the operation document. They avoid brittle string concatenation, preserve correct GraphQL types, and reduce injection risk when values originate from users or files.

Understand data and errors
A GraphQL response can contain data, errors, or both. Request errors—invalid syntax, failed validation, unknown fields, or invalid variables—prevent normal execution. Execution errors can affect one field while other fields still return usable values, producing partial data. Log the error message, path, and provider-specific extensions, then decide whether to retain, repair, or discard the partial record.
- Check the HTTP status before parsing.
- Parse JSON and inspect
errorseven after a 2xx response. - Validate required keys before transforming records.
- Do not blindly retry authentication, validation, or permission failures.
Paginate according to the actual schema
Pagination is not defined by one universal GraphQL field shape. Inspect the provider’s schema or documentation for cursor fields, page information, and arguments such as first/after or an entirely different contract. The names nodes, pageInfo, hasNextPage, and endCursor are common examples, not guaranteed protocol fields.

Deduplicate using a stable identifier because retries or changing source data can repeat a record. Stop only on the endpoint’s documented terminal signal; do not infer completion from a short page.

Provider limits are not universal
GitHub’s current GraphQL documentation, accessed in 2026, requires connection arguments from 1 through 100 and limits a single call to 500,000 total nodes. GitHub also documents a 10-second request timeout, possible 502/504 responses, and resource exhaustion for very large, deep, or broad queries. Those numbers apply to GitHub, not to GraphQL generally. Re-check the target provider’s current limits before implementation.
Make collection reliable and considerate
- Request only required fields and keep nested depth and page sizes modest.
- Honor rate-limit headers, reset times, and
Retry-After. - Use bounded exponential backoff only for transient failures the provider says are retryable.
- Avoid parallel requests by default; concurrency can trigger throttling or violate provider policy.
- Write pages incrementally, checkpoint cursors, and make reruns idempotent.
- Record operation name, variables (with secrets removed), status, latency, and error paths for diagnosis.

A direct POST is usually enough for a single query or a small scheduled collector. Choose gql when structured operations, schema use, or transport integration outweigh another dependency. If you need subscriptions, use the library’s WebSocket transport; its HTTP transports do not provide subscriptions.
Troubleshoot common failures
401 or 403
The token may be missing, expired, scoped incorrectly, or sent in the wrong header. Verify the provider’s authentication format and permissions; do not attempt to work around an access denial.
200 response with an errors array
Inspect each error’s message, path, and extensions. A field name, argument type, variable declaration, or resolver may be wrong. Preserve usable partial data only when your application can do so safely.

“Cannot query field” or validation errors
The field is absent from this schema, unavailable to this identity, or spelled differently. Consult the provider’s schema reference; introspection may be disabled.
Variable type or nullability error
Match the declaration exactly, such as ID! versus ID, and provide a value of the expected shape. A missing required variable cannot be repaired by retrying.
Timeouts, 502, 504, or rate limiting
Reduce page size and selected fields, simplify nested connections, and follow documented retry and reset instructions. Use bounded backoff for transient failures. GitHub’s 10-second timeout and node limits are not defaults for other providers.
Repeated or missing pages
Verify that you send the returned cursor unchanged, stop on the documented terminal flag, and detect a cursor that does not advance. Persist checkpoints and deduplicate stable IDs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use GET instead of POST for a GraphQL query?
POST with a JSON body is the interoperable starting point. GET support is optional, and GET must not execute mutations; follow the target provider’s documented behavior.
Should I enable introspection in production?
No blanket rule applies. Introspection is useful for tools, but availability is controlled by the deployment. Use the provider’s published schema when introspection is restricted.
Is GraphQL pagination always cursor-based?
No. Cursor connections are common, but schemas may expose offset, page-number, or custom pagination. Implement the contract documented by that endpoint.
