The distinction matters. Apps designed for digital ink usually outperform photo-scanning tools, while specialist OCR apps are better suited to paper notebooks, letters, journals, and historical documents.
For the best results, photograph pages in bright, even lighting, keep the camera parallel to the paper, remove shadows, and review the converted text before treating it as accurate.
Digital-ink handwriting converters
These apps recognize strokes as you write with an Apple Pencil, S Pen, Surface pen, or another compatible stylus. They are generally the most reliable option for new handwritten notes.
1. MyScript Notes — best overall
MyScript Notes, formerly called Nebo, is built specifically for handwriting recognition. It converts handwritten digital ink into editable text, supports handwriting search, pen gestures, custom dictionary entries, and exports to Text, PDF, PNG, SVG, Word, and .nebo files.

To convert writing, select it with the Lasso, tap Convert…, and choose the conversion type. In a document, double-tap the handwriting or tap its paragraph and choose Convert. To process everything, open the document, tap … in the upper-right corner, and select Convert all.
MyScript Notes can distinguish text, mathematics, and diagrams. Labeling the content correctly improves formatting. Technical terms and unusual names may need to be added to the custom dictionary.
Best for: Students, professionals, and anyone who wants editable digital handwriting rather than photo OCR.
2. Goodnotes — best for iPad notes and PDFs
Goodnotes converts handwriting created inside the app. It is particularly useful when annotating lecture slides, worksheets, and PDFs with an Apple Pencil. It does not automatically turn every photograph of a paper notebook into editable text.
- Choose the Lasso Tool.
- Circle the handwriting.
- Tap the selected area.
- Choose Convert > Text.
- Tap Convert to replace the ink with typed text.
You can also drag selected handwriting into another compatible app as converted text. iOS, Android, Windows, and web versions have not always offered identical features, so check the version you use before relying on a particular tool.
Best for: Apple Pencil users who already keep notes and PDF annotations in Goodnotes.
3. Notability — best for handwriting and mathematics
Notability combines handwritten notes, PDF annotation, audio recording, and handwriting recognition. It can convert normal handwriting to text and handwritten equations to high-resolution, scalable mathematical images.
- Open a note and tap Select.
- Circle the handwriting.
- Tap inside the selection.
- Choose Convert.
- Select Text, or choose Math for an equation.
Set the recognition language for new notes under Library > … > Note Editor > Handwriting & Drawing > Language. For an existing note, open it and use … > Note Info > Handwriting Language. Changing the global language does not change the language assigned to existing notes. Notability currently lists handwriting-to-text conversion under its Plus plan.
Best for: iPad users who need handwriting, audio notes, PDF markup, and math conversion together.
4. Samsung Notes — best for Galaxy devices
Samsung Notes is the natural choice for Galaxy phones and tablets that support an S Pen. Available controls vary by device and One UI version, but the current workflow is:
- Open Samsung Notes and tap Create note.
- Write with the S Pen.
- Tap Clean up handwriting, shown as a pen-with-wand icon on supported devices.
- Tap Convert to text.
- Select the writing, then tap Convert or Copy.
Some models expose the feature through More options > Convert to text. Set the recognition language under Samsung Notes > Menu > Settings > Handwriting language. If the writing is too difficult to read, the app may show No text to recognize. Compatible-device and S Pen requirements mean this is not a universal Galaxy feature.

Best for: Galaxy Tab and Galaxy phone owners who already write with an S Pen.
5. OneNote — best cross-platform Microsoft option
OneNote supports both digital-ink conversion and image OCR, although the two features work differently.
For digital ink, select the handwriting, open the Draw tab, and choose Ink to Text. This requires a supported OneNote version, device, pen input method, and language.
For a photograph or printout, insert the image, right-click it, choose Copy Text from Picture, and paste the result with Ctrl+V. OneNote may take time to process an image; Microsoft says some OCR results can take 24–48 hours to become available.

Best for: Microsoft 365 users who want handwriting and document OCR in an existing notebook system.
6. Apple Notes with Scribble — best built-in iPad option
Apple Scribble converts live Apple Pencil input into typed text in supported text fields. Tap a text field in Notes, Messages, Pages, or another compatible app, then write with the Apple Pencil. The iPad converts the strokes as you write.
In Notes, you can also use the Scribble tool for handwritten content. Apple supports handwriting search and handwriting selection in supported languages, but Scribble is not a batch OCR system for photographed paper pages. For photos, use Live Text instead.
Scribble requires a supported iPad, Apple Pencil, and system language. It is the simplest option when you only need to write directly into an app’s text field.

7. Noteshelf — best alternative notebook app
Noteshelf supports handwriting-to-text conversion, handwriting search, PDF annotation, audio recording, and typed notes. It is available on iOS, macOS, Android, and Windows, although individual features can vary by platform.

The app’s public documentation confirms handwriting recognition but does not provide one universal button sequence for every version. Look for the conversion command in the handwriting selection or toolbar menu after selecting digital ink.
Best for: Users who want a conventional notebook and PDF-markup app with handwriting recognition.
Photo and paper handwriting OCR apps
These apps read an image rather than live stylus strokes. They are useful for existing paper notes, but lighting, page angle, ink contrast, cursive, and layout have a major effect on the result.
8. Apple Live Text — best quick iPhone or iPad extractor
Live Text can copy text from photos, camera views, videos, and online images. It may recognize clear handwriting, but it is a general text-recognition feature rather than a specialist cursive transcription tool.
In Photos, open an image, tap the Live Text button or touch and hold detected text, adjust the selection, and tap Copy. In Camera, point at the page, wait for the yellow text frame, tap Detect Text, select the words, and copy them.
Live Text requires an iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or later with iOS 15 or later, or a supported iPad with iPadOS 15.1 or later. Glare, shadows, slanted pages, connected cursive, and crowded layouts can stop detection.

9. Google Lens — best quick Android scanner
Google Lens can select and copy text from images, including short handwritten lists, recipes, and codes. Open the image in Google Photos or Lens, tap Lens, choose Select text, select the required words, and tap Copy.
The location of Lens differs between Android phones and app versions. It is designed for short extraction jobs, not for accurately transcribing multi-page journals or preserving forms and tables. Cursive, diagrams, and unusual spacing commonly produce incomplete results.
Best for: Android users who need to copy a short handwritten note.

The service currently advertises 10 free pages for testing. Clean page images, strong contrast, and legible writing produce better results. Tables, overlapping annotations, forms, and heavily connected cursive may not retain their original structure.
Best for: Letters, journals, handwritten forms, and photographed notebooks.
11. Transkribus — best for historical handwriting
Transkribus uses Handwritten Text Recognition models designed for particular periods, scripts, languages, layouts, and writing styles. It is considerably more capable than a basic phone OCR tool for archival work, but it requires more setup.
- Create or open a collection.
- Click Upload and add JPEG, JPG, or PDF files.
- Choose a recognition model.
- Run recognition.
- Correct the transcription in the editor.
- Select the pages, then use Action > Export.
Exports include TXT, DOCX, PDF, CSV, XML, and TEI-XML. Transkribus advertises 50 free credits per month and more than 300 public AI models. A custom model can be trained when you have enough consistent examples from the same handwriting style.
Best for: Historical letters, diaries, genealogy, archives, and repeated handwriting styles.
12. vFlat Scan — best for curved notebook pages
vFlat combines document scanning, automatic cropping, book-page flattening, and OCR. Its curved-page correction is useful for notebooks and bound journals where text bends near the spine.
Capture the page, allow vFlat to detect and flatten it, run OCR, and export the result. Current Android export options include PDF, JPG, TXT, Word, and ZIP. Flattening improves the source image, but it cannot guarantee accurate recognition of difficult cursive.

Best for: Bound notebooks, books, journals, and other curved pages.
13. CamScanner — best general scanner with OCR
CamScanner scans notes, forms, whiteboards, and documents, then provides text extraction through its OCR tools. Its product information states that OCR supports 41 languages and exports can include PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and image files.
Import or scan a page, choose Extract Text or the OCR function, review the recognition, and export it. CamScanner is a capable document scanner, but its public documentation does not promise specialist-level cursive recognition. Expect better results from printed text and clear block handwriting than messy connected writing.

14. Adobe Scan — best for searchable PDFs
Adobe Scan automatically corrects perspective, cleans up images, reduces glare and shadows, and uses OCR to create searchable PDFs. It is a good fit when the final result is a clean archive rather than perfectly editable handwriting.
Scan or import the page, let Adobe apply its cleanup, save the document, and use Acrobat tools to search or copy recognized text. Adobe describes support for sharpened handwritten and printed text, but does not guarantee specialist cursive recognition. Clear block handwriting usually performs better than dense cursive, tables, and heavily annotated pages.
Best for: Clean handwritten notes that need to become searchable PDFs.
15. OneDrive OCR — best Microsoft workflow after Lens
Microsoft Lens is no longer a current recommendation. Retirement began on January 9, 2026; the app was removed from the iOS App Store and Google Play on February 9, 2026, and new scans were disabled after March 9, 2026. Microsoft recommends OneDrive as the scanning alternative.
OneDrive’s mobile OCR works with scanned PDFs:
- Open the scanned PDF in the OneDrive mobile app.
- Long-press anywhere on the page.
- Tap Recognize text.
- Wait for Text is now selectable.
- Select and copy the result.
The feature has been described as rolling out on Android and iOS. It is intended for selectable text in scanned PDFs and does not promise accurate cursive transcription or preservation of handwritten page layouts.
Best for: Microsoft users who want copyable text from scanned PDFs.

How to choose the right app
- Writing with a stylus: Start with MyScript Notes, Goodnotes, Notability, Samsung Notes, OneNote, Apple Scribble, or Noteshelf.
- Scanning a few lines: Use Apple Live Text or Google Lens.
- Converting paper notebooks: Try Pen to Print, vFlat Scan, Adobe Scan, or CamScanner.
- Working with old letters or archives: Use Transkribus and select a model suited to the document.
- Already using Microsoft 365: Use OneNote for digital ink and OneDrive OCR for scanned PDFs.
Always compare the result with the original. OCR can turn a handwritten “1” into an “I,” omit punctuation, merge adjacent lines, or silently replace names and technical terms with more familiar words.

What is the most accurate handwriting-to-text app?
For handwriting written with a stylus, MyScript Notes is the strongest general-purpose choice because recognition is its central feature. For photographed historical or difficult handwriting, Transkribus is usually a better fit because it offers models trained for particular scripts and writing styles.
Can Goodnotes or Notability convert a photo of handwritten paper?
Their primary conversion tools recognize digital ink written inside the app. Selecting handwriting with the Lasso or Select tool is not the same as uploading a photograph. Use a dedicated image OCR app when the original writing is on paper.
Is there a free handwriting scanner on iPhone or Android?
iPhone and iPad users can try Live Text, while Android users can try Google Lens. Both are convenient for short, clear extracts, but neither guarantees accurate cursive recognition or reliable multi-page layout preservation.
Why does handwriting OCR produce incorrect text?
Recognition is affected by cursive connections, unusual letter shapes, poor lighting, glare, shadows, slanted pages, low contrast, crowded layouts, tables, and mixed annotations. Improve the image, use the correct recognition language, and proofread names, numbers, equations, and technical terms.

Choose a digital-ink app if you are writing with a stylus: MyScript Notes is the best all-round option, while Goodnotes, Notability, Samsung Notes, and Apple Scribble are better choices when you are already committed to a platform. For paper handwriting, start with Pen to Print for ordinary notebooks, vFlat for curved pages, and Transkribus for historical or unusually difficult documents. Quick tools such as Live Text and Google Lens are useful for a few lines, but they should not be mistaken for specialist handwriting OCR.
