Shared worlds are where Better MC shines. With new biomes to explore, dungeons to clear and the Aether to reach, a group gets far more out of it on a server that stays online when the person who started the world logs off. This guide sets up BMC4, the Forge edition on Minecraft 1.20.1, with details taken from the official pack file itself, including the part most guides skip: which mods a server should not run.
The essentials: BMC4 v59 runs on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.4.20 and needs Java 17. Plan on 6–8 GB when a few friends play. The official pack lists 340 mod files and marks every one as needed on both sides, yet several of them are purely visual or audio mods for players’ computers, so a hand-built server may need some of them removed before it will start reliably.
Inside the official BMC4 pack
The Modrinth release of BMC4 v59, published on 15 July 2026, is a roughly 90 MB .mrpack file, and the pack’s page promises full parity with its CurseForge version. Opening it shows exactly what a server is dealing with:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Modrinth’s format lets a pack mark files as client-only, but BMC4’s index does not use that option, so it cannot tell you what to leave off a server. The list itself makes the point: it includes Oculus for shaders, FancyMenu and Drippy Loading Screen for menus, Sound Physics Remastered, Not Enough Animations, Skin Layers 3D and Chat Heads, all of which change what a player sees or hears rather than how the world runs.
Hosted or self-built?
The client-mod question tips the balance for many groups. A host’s BMC4 template has already been put together as a server, so nobody has to read crash reports on day one. Building it yourself costs nothing beyond the machine and teaches you the pack inside out, but expect an hour or two the first time, and a repeat of the clean-up after every major update. If your group wants to play tonight, host it; if someone enjoys tinkering and has a spare computer or VPS, build it.
Route one: a hosted BMC4 server
The simplest way around all of that is a host with a BMC4 template. Godlike.Host deploys Better MC [FORGE] BMC4 in one click on Forge for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Java 17, and its card suggests 6 GB. Groups that want another build can supply their own server pack through Godlike’s panel or SFTP, choosing the loader as they upload. Each server also gets free backups, as often as three a day, protection from DDoS attacks and a choice among 10 data centers.
Check first: Godlike’s page lists Minecraft 1.20.1 without naming a BMC4 build, so check which release the template installed, then share that number with your players.
Route two: build the server yourself
- Install Java 17 (Mojang’s requirement for Minecraft 1.20.1).
- Install Forge 47.4.20 for 1.20.1. Download the installer from Forge’s official site and run it in server mode, either from the installer window or with java -jar and the –installServer option, into an empty folder.
- Gather the mods. If the release you want offers an official server pack, use it, since that is the pack author’s own server build. Otherwise, download the 340 files listed in the .mrpack’s modrinth.index.json into the mods folder.
- Copy the overrides, including the 21 bundled mods and the config folders. The resourcepacks and shaderpacks folders only matter on players’ computers, so the server can skip them.
- Set memory in user_jvm_args.txt, which Forge creates for 1.20.1 servers, for example -Xmx8G.
- After the first launch, open eula.txt and set it to true.
- Start the server with the run script Forge generated and watch the console.
Removing client-side mods that block start-up
If the server stops during loading, the crash report usually names the mod responsible. With a pack built for players, the culprits are almost always client-side: rendering, shader, menu, sound and animation mods. Work through it methodically:

- Read the newest file in the crash-reports folder, or the end of logs/latest.log, for the mod named in the error.
- Move that one jar out of the mods folder rather than deleting it, so you can put it back.
- Start again and repeat until the server reaches its “Done” line.
- Keep a note of what you removed, because players keep every mod on their side.
Players should never remove mods from their own copy to match the server, and you should never add a mod to the server that players lack. The trimmed list is a server-only concern, so keep it with your server notes. Client-side mods are invisible to the server, and the rest of the pack must match exactly on both sides.
Help that is already in the pack
BMC4 arrives with several mods that do real work on a server. ModernFix and FerriteCore cut start-up time and memory use, and the overrides add Fast Async World Save, Smooth Chunk and Chunk Sending, which are aimed at smoother saving and chunk handling. Keep these on the server: they are part of why the pack runs as well as it does, and removing them to save a few seconds of start-up would cost far more in play.

Profiling lag with spark
BMC4’s index includes spark, a profiler for Minecraft servers, so you already have the right tool when things slow down. Its /spark tps command reports how the server is keeping up, and /spark profiler records what is using tick time, producing a report you can read in a browser. Run it during a laggy session rather than guessing: on an exploration pack, the answer is usually new chunk generation or a crowded area, and the fix is different for each.
Planning a Better MC world with friends
The pack gives a group plenty of shared projects. Waystones make a central hub easy, so build one near spawn early and link every player’s base to it. Dragon Mounts lets players raise and ride dragons, so consider setting allow-flight=true in server.properties: with it off, Minecraft kicks survival players who stay airborne for five seconds. The Aether, expanded here by Deep Aether and Aether Villages, makes a good group expedition once everyone has settled in. Settle loot-sharing rules for dungeons and bosses before the first raid.
BMC4 on a rented Linux machine
The Forge installer and the run.sh script it writes do most of the work on a VPS. Give the VPS more RAM than the heap you set, since the operating system needs its own share. Run the server under a regular user rather than root, keep it alive with tmux, screen or a systemd service that restarts it after a crash, and open just SSH and port 25565 in the firewall. Upload the pack with SFTP, and keep a copy of your trimmed mods folder somewhere safe so the next update starts from a known-good list.

Backups as the world grows
Better MC worlds grow quickly, because every trip into new terrain adds structures to the save. Back the world folder up on a timer, store one copy off the machine, and take an extra one before any update or large expedition. Test one restore on a spare folder while the stakes are low, so you know the backups actually work.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How much memory to give BMC4
Godlike’s card suggests 6 GB; other hosts’ BMC4 pages, checked on 10 October, start at 8 GB and step up to 12 GB when the group explores a lot. On a home server or VPS, keep some RAM back for the operating system, outside the -Xmx figure. The deciding factor is exploration: Better MC’s world generation adds thousands of structures, and new terrain is what costs a server the most.
server.properties choices for Better MC
- view-distance and simulation-distance both default to 10; trimming simulation distance eases the load without shrinking what players see as much.
- white-list keeps a friends’ world private.
- spawn-protection stops non-operators building at spawn; lower it if you want everyone to build there.
- difficulty deserves a group vote, since the pack adds tougher bosses and mobs.
- server-port stays 25565 unless you change it; at home it needs a router forward, and on a VPS a firewall rule.
Updating to a new BMC4 build
Builds keep coming: Modrinth’s latest is v59, and some hosts already list v61. To move up, shut the server down and copy the whole folder to a backup, then rebuild the mods and config from the new release following the same steps as your first build; carry over only the world folder and server.properties. Remove the same client-side mods you removed before, start the server, check the world, and only then tell players which build to install. Never let half the group update ahead of the server.
Running a different Better MC edition
This guide covers BMC4, but the same shape works for the others. BMC5 and BMC6 are NeoForge packs, on Minecraft 1.21.1 and 26.1.2, so they need NeoForge’s installer and Java 21 or Java 25 respectively. BMC2 and BMC3 are Fabric packs, which start from Fabric’s server launcher instead of Forge’s installer. In every case, build from the edition’s own pack, check its index for player-only mods, and make sure everyone runs the same edition and build.
Common problems and fixes
- Crash during mod loading: a client-side mod is usually to blame; remove the one named in the crash report.
- Wrong Java: Forge for 1.20.1 wants Java 17; point the run script at it if several versions are installed.
- Players refused at login: the server and the player run different BMC editions or builds. A BMC5 or Fabric BMC2 client cannot join a BMC4 server.
- Memory errors: increase the -Xmx value inside user_jvm_args.txt and confirm the machine has that memory free.
- Lag while exploring: reduce simulation distance, restart daily when nobody plays, and consider a faster CPU before more RAM.

FAQ
Which Forge version does BMC4 need?
BMC4 v59 declares Forge 47.4.20 for Minecraft 1.20.1. Use the Forge build the pack version you install declares.
Can I copy the client modpack straight onto a server?
You can try, but expect to remove client-side mods. The official index flags all 340 files for both sides, including shader, menu and sound mods that only make sense on players’ computers.
Do players need to remove those client-side mods?
No. Players keep the full pack. Only the server goes without the mods that will not run there.
How much RAM should a BMC4 server have?
Six to 8 GB covers a few players; groups that explore heavily do better with 10 to 12 GB.

Should I turn on allow-flight?
For BMC4, usually yes. Riding dragons and similar mod features can leave players airborne, and with allow-flight off the server kicks anyone in the air for five seconds in survival.
Why is the first launch so slow?
Several minutes is normal. Forge has to load hundreds of mods and build its caches on the first run, and later starts are noticeably faster.
Does BMC4 include a profiler?
Yes. The pack ships spark, whose /spark tps and /spark profiler commands help you find what is slowing the server down.
