There is no evidence-based universal winner among SqlDBM, erwin Data Modeler, Hackolade Studio, and Vertabelo for Snowflake. Choose by the job you need done: importing an existing schema, generating new or changed DDL, managing model revisions, or collaborating—and verify that the product edition and current release cover your Snowflake objects.
Compare the four tools by the job you need done
| Tool | Documented Snowflake workflow | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|
| SqlDBM | Reverse import, model updates, revision comparisons, and generation of CREATE and ALTER scripts are documented in the Snowflake SqlDBM guide. | Confirm that its supported import and output options cover your object types and workflow. |
| erwin Data Modeler | Snowflake lists erwin Data Modeler 2020 or higher in its third-party tool directory. | Version 15.0 release notes document specific reverse-engineering edge cases; they do not establish how later releases behave. |
| Hackolade Studio | Its documentation lists Snowflake DDL files as a reverse-engineering input. | Advanced forward and reverse engineering depend on edition; Community and Personal do not include those functions, according to the edition comparison. |
| Vertabelo | Its materials confirm physical Snowflake modeling and generation of Snowflake DDL. | Current Snowflake-specific reverse-engineering support and object coverage are not established by the available materials. |
Snowflake says its third-party tool directory is not exhaustive and inclusion does not guarantee that every feature will interoperate. Treat a directory listing as a starting point, not a compatibility promise.
Decide what “reverse engineer” means for your workflow
Reverse engineering turns an existing database schema into a model you can inspect or edit. But the route into the tool matters: a product may connect directly to Snowflake, import exported SQL, or support both. Before selecting one, check whether it imports the objects you care about, preserves the properties you need, and can update an existing model without losing your changes.
SqlDBM documents both a direct-connection route and DDL import. Its support article describes selecting objects to add, update, or delete in an existing project: SqlDBM reverse engineering. Do not assume other tools use the same import route just because they can work with Snowflake.

- Used Book in Good Condition
For Hackolade, the documented input includes Snowflake DDL files, so confirm that file-based import suits your process if a direct connection is a requirement. Vertabelo’s general materials discuss reverse engineering existing databases, but the available documentation does not establish the current Snowflake connector or the Snowflake objects it imports. Ask the vendor to demonstrate your required path and schema before relying on it for this use.
Check reverse-engineering limits against your schema
Release notes for erwin Data Modeler 15.0 call out cases in which Snowflake views may fail to reverse engineer. Examples include views using an IDENTIFIER clause, certain column names such as NUMBER, ORDER, or SCOPE, and a WHERE NOT IS_DELETED clause. The same notes say that a Snowflake database with more than 10,000 tables can produce errors and fail to import tables. These are version-specific cautions, not proof that every current erwin release has the same behavior. Review the erwin Data Modeler 15.0 release notes and test your own schema in the exact release under consideration.
Rank #2
A small representative trial is more useful than a generic feature checklist. Include the views, naming patterns, object types, and schema size that matter to your team, then compare the imported model with Snowflake. No comparative performance or usability benchmark is established for these four products here.

Separate DDL extraction, model import, and DDL generation
Snowflake’s GET_DDL function extracts object DDL; it is not by itself a modeling tool, a model synchronization process, or a forward-engineering workflow. SqlDBM documents using extracted DDL as an import route. Snowflake also documents transformations and exceptions in the function’s output, so extracted text should not be assumed to reproduce the original SQL byte for byte.
Rank #3
For example, Snowflake says that GET_DDL replaces data type aliases with standard Snowflake type names by default. For views, its output includes OR REPLACE and excludes COPY GRANTS even if that clause was present in the original statement. See the Snowflake GET_DDL documentation when exact SQL text matters.
On the forward side, SqlDBM’s Snowflake guide describes generating complete CREATE statements and ALTER scripts between project versions or environments, as well as dbt-compatible source and model YAML. Vertabelo’s Snowflake materials describe generating Snowflake DDL from physical models. Those statements establish documented output capabilities, not that every object type or deployment scenario is covered. Verify the output against the exact changes your release process expects.

Match model governance and edition to team needs
If teams need revision review, comments, or parallel work, SqlDBM’s Snowflake guide describes revision comparisons, object comments, and concurrent branches. The cited material does not establish equivalent behavior for the other three tools, so assess their collaboration and version-control functions separately rather than inferring parity.
Hackolade’s edition choice is material: its edition matrix says Community and Personal lack the advanced forward- and reverse-engineering functions for database targets. The page reviewed advertises a 14-day Professional trial and describes additional team features in Workgroup; confirm current availability, licensing, and the precise feature matrix on the Hackolade editions page before deciding.
For modeling scope, SqlDBM describes database-agnostic logical projects alongside Snowflake physical modeling. Vertabelo’s documentation describes logical and physical modeling. If your team needs both business concepts and Snowflake-specific structures, confirm how each product represents the relationship between those layers instead of treating “supports modeling” as a complete answer.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Run a focused evaluation before choosing
- Write down the job. Specify whether you need a new physical model, reverse import, CREATE DDL, ALTER/diff scripts, deployment, or more than one of these.
- List required objects and edge cases. Include the tables, views, names, clauses, and schema size that resemble your real Snowflake environment.
- Confirm the exact route and edition. Ask whether the product connects to Snowflake or imports DDL, and verify that the edition includes the engineering features you require.
- Compare outputs with Snowflake. Check the imported model and generated SQL against your expected schema changes; account for documented
GET_DDLtransformations if using extracted SQL. - Check team workflow separately. Validate review, revisions, branching, and collaboration in the product rather than assuming those capabilities from its modeling or DDL features.
Snowflake’s directory lists SqlDBM, erwin, and Hackolade among third-party tools it has validated, but that is not a blanket guarantee that every function will interoperate. The directory page also lists erwin Data Modeler 2020 or higher and Hackolade Studio 5.2.0 or higher; check the live Snowflake ecosystem directory for current requirements.
