A dye-sub printer uses heat to transfer dye onto specially designed media. The term covers two different setups: a self-contained photo printer that transfers dye from a ribbon onto photo media, and a printer that puts sublimation ink on transfer paper for pressing onto polyester or a compatible polymer-coated surface. They use different supplies and produce different kinds of output, so identify the workflow before choosing a printer.
How does dye-sublimation printing work?
“Dye-sub” is short for dye sublimation. In both workflows, heat helps move dye into or onto a receiving material, but the equipment and destination differ.
Dedicated dye-sub photo printers
A dedicated photo printer uses a thermal print head to heat dye on a colored ribbon and transfer it to matched photo media. Some systems also apply a protective finish. The prints are ready to handle when they leave the printer. This workflow is used for photo booths, events, attractions, professional photography, and retail photo printing, according to DNP Photo.

A transfer setup prints a design with sublimation ink onto transfer paper. The paper is placed against polyester fabric or a compatible polymer-coated object, then heat and pressure transfer the dye to that surface. A suitable heat press is used for individual pieces; a calendar can handle continuous media. Epson’s maker workflow describes designing, printing the transfer, and pressing it onto a polyester blank. Larger textile and promotional workflows can use different equipment and processes, as outlined by Mimaki Europe.

What is a dye-sub printer used for?
The right use depends on which kind of printer you mean:
- Photo printers: producing individual photos for booths, events, attractions, photographers, or retail photo services.
- Transfer systems: decorating polyester textiles and compatible coated products, including apparel, banners, mugs, and other blanks where the product and process are suitable.
Do not assume every item that looks printable will work. The receiving surface and its coating must be compatible with the ink, heat, and process. Check both the printer instructions and the blank manufacturer’s directions.

How is dye-sub different from ordinary inkjet printing?
An ordinary inkjet deposits tiny ink droplets onto paper. A dedicated dye-sub photo printer instead uses heat to transfer dye from a color ribbon to specially coated photo paper, as Canon Australia explains.

The distinction can be confusing because an inkjet printer can also be used for sublimation. In that case, the printer mechanism is inkjet, but it uses sublimation ink to create a transfer that is later heat-pressed onto a compatible receiving material. “Inkjet” describes how the printer puts ink on paper; “sublimation” describes the transfer process and material compatibility. Not every dye-sub printer uses ink cartridges: dedicated photo printers may use dye ribbons and matched photo media.

What equipment and supplies does each workflow need?

These are not interchangeable supply systems. Confirm compatibility for the specific printer, ink, paper, press, and receiving blank before buying materials.
How do you choose the right type?
- Decide what you want to produce. Choose a dedicated photo printer for finished photos; consider transfer sublimation for designs on suitable textiles or coated goods.
- Check the receiving material. Transfer systems are intended for polyester or compatible polymer-coated surfaces, not arbitrary fabric or objects. Brother’s US support guidance for its SP-1/SP-1W says its described process uses polyester; treat that as guidance for that product, not a rule covering every commercial system. - Match the workflow and consumables. A ribbon-based photo printer needs its compatible ribbon and photo media. An inkjet transfer setup needs sublimation ink and transfer paper, as well as equipment to apply heat and pressure.
- Consider output size and production format. Compare the printer’s supported media and print size with the work you expect to produce. A press for individual blanks and a calendar for continuous media serve different formats.
- Follow the specific process instructions. Do not use one press setting for every combination of printer, ink, paper, and blank. A Roland DG technical guide gives 180–200°C for 35–60 seconds as a typical example, not a universal setting. Follow the manufacturers’ instructions for the actual materials and equipment.
What should you expect when making a transfer?
Print the design mirrored so it reads correctly after transfer; both Epson and Brother specify this for their described transfer workflows. Before pressing, the image on transfer paper may look less vibrant than the finished result. Epson describes this as normal. Follow the receiving blank manufacturer’s washing instructions for finished textiles.
