A phone speaker can sound quiet because its volume is low, audio is routed to another device, an opening is obstructed, or a call or software issue is affecting sound. Hardware trouble is also possible. First check whether the problem affects calls, one app, or every sound source; then work through the reversible checks before seeking service.
First, find out which sounds are affected
Test a phone call, a locally recorded video or voice recording, and media from another app. Note whether the sound is quiet only during calls, only in one app or file, or across multiple sources. This distinction helps narrow the next step: a single recording or app may be the issue, while consistently quiet or distorted sound across sources deserves broader troubleshooting.
For Pixel phones, Google recommends testing two or three songs or videos from different apps. If only some sound distorted, the affected files may be the cause; if all are distorted, Google advises contacting Pixel support. Google Pixel Help: Why can’t I hear sound from my Pixel phone?

Check volume and where the audio is going
- Play the affected sound and adjust volume. Use the phone’s volume buttons while the call, video, or other sound is active. Phones can have separate controls for different audio types, so adjust the one that is currently playing.
- Disconnect external audio devices. Turn Bluetooth off temporarily and unplug any connected audio accessory, then test again. Audio may be routed to a paired device instead of the phone speaker. - For a call, test speakerphone both ways. Turn speakerphone on and then off. This can help establish whether the problem is specific to the receiver or also affects the loudspeaker.
Remove anything that may block the speaker
Take off the case, protective film, skin, or accessory temporarily and test the sound again. Inspect the speaker grille and, on iPhone, the receiver opening for visible dirt or blockage. A case or film that covers an opening can make sound seem muffled or faint. Apple and Samsung both recommend checking for obstructions or accessories. Clean only as your phone maker recommends
If an opening looks dirty, use the method specified for your exact phone. Apple advises cleaning the speaker or receiver opening with a clean, dry, small soft-bristled brush. Google’s Pixel guidance recommends a soft, lint-free cloth for dirty speaker and microphone areas. These instructions differ by device; do not assume a tool or cleaning method suitable for one phone is suitable for another. Apple Support; Google Pixel Help.
For call-only problems, check reception
If media sounds normal but calls are quiet, unclear, or distorted, check the signal indicator and try again somewhere with stronger reception. Network conditions can affect call quality, so a call problem does not by itself establish that the speaker is faulty. Google also suggests toggling Wi-Fi as part of call troubleshooting and waiting until a moving vehicle has stopped before making a call. Google Pixel Help; Apple Support.

Restart the phone and retest
Restart the phone, then test more than one sound source again. If the issue began after a setting or app change, retesting across sources can help reveal whether it is limited to that app or remains system-wide. Menu labels and troubleshooting options vary by phone and software version.
Consider device-specific features and diagnostics
Pixel accessibility audio tools
Pixel phones include Adaptive Sound and the Sound Amplifier accessibility feature. Sound Amplifier offers controls to boost quiet sounds and adjust high and low frequencies. Galaxy speaker diagnostics
Samsung says users can run speaker diagnostics in Samsung Members. Some Galaxy speakers may sound quiet, crackly, or distorted after a substantial change in ambient pressure; Samsung says the pressure will usually equalize over time. Its guidance also describes a SIM-tray procedure for certain models, but that is model-dependent and should not be applied to other phones or Galaxy models without checking the relevant instructions. Contact the phone manufacturer or a qualified repair service if sound remains quiet or distorted across multiple sources after the basic checks, or if the manufacturer’s diagnostics indicate a problem. On iPhone, Apple says service may be needed if the Ringtone and Alerts slider produces no sound or its speaker button is dimmed. Apple Support; Google Pixel Help; Samsung Support.
