A Pixel screen saver is a configurable idle display that can appear while the phone is charging. Depending on your phone and Android version, it can show a clock, photos, home controls, Pixel Weather, or content supplied by compatible apps. It starts after the display times out while the screen has been left on; it is not the same feature as Always-on Display (AOD).
Always-on Display is a separate lock-screen setting for keeping the time and other at-a-glance information visible when the phone is idle. Use the screen saver when you want a changing charging or docked display. Use AOD when you want quick information without waiting for a charging condition.
What a Pixel screen saver shows
Google describes the Pixel screen saver as an experience that can show photos, colorful backgrounds, a clock and other content when the phone is charging or docked. The exact choices depend on the Pixel model, Android release and installed apps.
| Screen-saver content | What it is useful for | Availability caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Clock | A bedside or desk clock while the phone charges | Clock styles and controls can vary by model and software |
| Photos | A rotating display of selected images | Photo-source and selection controls may differ by Android version |
| Home controls | Quick access to compatible smart-home controls while the phone is idle | Requires supported home devices and software |
| Pixel Weather | Weather information in the idle display | May not appear on every Pixel or in every software build |
| Compatible-app content | Information supplied by apps that support screen-saver content | Only apps with the required support can appear |
That flexibility is the key difference from a simple charging indicator. You choose both what the screen displays and the charging situation that is allowed to trigger it.

Screen saver versus Always-on Display
Although both features can show information while the phone is not being actively used, they work at different stages of the phone’s idle state and are configured separately.
| Question | Pixel screen saver | Always-on Display |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | A configurable idle display, particularly useful while charging or docked | At-a-glance lock-screen information when the phone is idle |
| Typical trigger | The display times out after you leave the screen on, with charging conditions enabled | The separate Always-on Display setting keeps selected lock-screen information visible |
| Possible content | Clock, photos, home controls, Pixel Weather and compatible-app content | Time and other lock-screen information; supported Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL models can also show the lock-screen wallpaper with the date and time when that option is enabled |
| Where it is configured | Settings → Display & touch → Screen saver | A separate Always-on Display control under Display & touch |
| Charging requirement | Google’s current choices are While charging and While upright and charging; wireless charging can be required if that option is offered | Not defined by the screen-saver charging choices |
| Low-light behavior | Can transition to a low-light clock or turn the screen off in a dim environment | Managed by the Always-on Display feature and its own battery settings |
Think of the screen saver as a charging display and AOD as a persistent glance layer on the lock screen. Turning on one does not automatically configure the other.
How to turn on and configure the screen saver
On current Pixel software, the setup path is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & touch.
- Tap Screen saver.
- Turn on Use screen saver.
- Choose the content you want to display, such as a clock, photos, home controls, Pixel Weather or an available compatible app.
- Open When to show and choose While charging or While upright and charging.
- If your phone offers the restriction, enable the option to show the screen saver only during wireless charging.
- Tap Use screen saver to preview the result.
The wording and the list of content types can be different on another Pixel model or Android release. Google notes that some of its instructions apply only to Android 14 and later, so a missing menu does not necessarily indicate a fault.
Choosing the charging condition
While charging allows the screen saver whenever the phone is connected to a charger and the other screen-saver conditions are met. While upright and charging is intended for a phone standing on a desk, bedside stand or compatible charging dock. It helps prevent a screen saver from running while the phone lies flat in a bag or on a table, but the exact orientation detection can vary by device and accessory.

If a wireless-only option is available, use it when you want the screen saver to appear on a stand or wireless pad but not during ordinary cable charging. The setting is a trigger restriction, not a requirement for the screen saver feature itself.
When the screen saver appears
The screen saver does not start the instant you connect a charger. Google says to leave the display on and let it time out. After the timeout, the phone can enter the screen saver if the selected charging and orientation conditions are satisfied.
Pressing the Power button to turn the display off prevents the screen saver from starting. That shortcut takes the phone directly to its normal screen-off state instead of allowing the timeout-based transition.

Screen-saver timing follows the separate screen-timeout setting. Go to Settings → Display & touch → Screen timeout. Current Pixel guidance lists these timeout choices:

Depending on the phone, you may also see Adaptive timeout, which can keep the screen on while you are looking at it, and Screen attention, which uses the front camera to help prevent unwanted timeouts while you look at the display. Those controls affect when the screen saver can begin; they do not replace the screen-saver setting.
What happens in a dark room
Pixel screen savers have a low-light behavior intended for bedrooms and other dark spaces. Google says the default dim-environment behavior transitions to a low-light clock. Depending on the device and software, the display can instead turn off. This means a screen saver may look bright during the day but become a much dimmer clock at night.
If the display remains too bright, open the screen-saver settings and review the low-light behavior available on your phone. The exact control label and choices are not identical across all Pixel generations, so follow the options shown on your device rather than expecting a universal menu.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUsing a Pixel as a bedside or desk display
A charging stand is optional. The screen saver can be enabled without one, but a stand makes the upright charging mode practical and keeps the display visible from across a room.

Google says that when a Pixel is charging with a Pixelsnap Charger or a Pixel Stand (first or second generation) and is not in use, you can configure a custom screen saver. The listed choices include a clock, photos and home controls. Compatibility depends on the exact phone, stand and software combination, so verify support for your model before buying or relying on a dock.
A stand does not unlock a separate version of the feature. It simply provides a charging and positioning setup that can satisfy the screen-saver trigger and make the result easier to see.

Always-on Display is not selected from the Screen saver menu. Open Settings → Display & touch and look for the separate Always-on Display control. The available lock-screen information and personalization options depend on the Pixel model and Android version.
Google specifically documents a Show lock screen wallpaper option for Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL. On those supported models, enabling it can place the lock-screen wallpaper behind the date and time on the Always-on Display. Do not assume that the same wallpaper control exists on earlier Pixels or on the standard Pixel 10.

Google’s battery guidance lists turning off Always-on Display as one way to save battery. It does not provide a universal percentage or a measured comparison between AOD and screen-saver power use. Battery impact varies with display technology, brightness, refresh behavior, charging state and the content being shown, so a precise savings claim would be unsupported.
Which feature should you use?
Choose the screen saver when
- You want photos, a larger clock, weather or home controls while the phone charges.
- Your phone normally rests on a charging stand or dock.
- You want the display to appear only during charging, or only while upright and charging.
- You prefer a low-light clock at night rather than the full charging display.
Choose Always-on Display when
- You want time and lock-screen information available without waiting for a charger.
- You want an at-a-glance view whenever the phone is idle.
- You are using a model with additional AOD personalization, such as the documented wallpaper option on Pixel 10 Pro or Pixel 10 Pro XL.
Use both when
You want quick information throughout the day and a richer charging display at a desk or bedside. Because the controls are separate, enable and tune each feature independently. AOD handles the ordinary idle lock screen; the screen saver takes over only when its timeout and charging conditions are met.
Troubleshooting a screen saver that does not appear
- The phone is charging but nothing happens: Confirm that Use screen saver is enabled and that the selected When to show condition matches the way you are charging.
- You pressed Power: The screen saver will not start after a manual screen-off action. Wake the phone, leave the display on and wait for the timeout instead.
- It starts too late: Check Settings → Display & touch → Screen timeout. A longer timeout delays the screen saver.
- It appears only on a stand: You may have selected While upright and charging or a wireless-only restriction. Choose While charging if you want it during cable charging or while the phone lies flat.
- A content option is missing: Screen-saver types vary by model, Android version and compatible-app support. Update the phone if an update is offered, then check the menu again; do not expect every Pixel to expose every content type.
- The night display looks different: Low-light behavior can replace the normal view with a dim clock or turn the display off. Review the low-light setting before treating that change as a malfunction.
- A wallpaper option is missing from AOD: Google documents that control for Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL only. Its absence on another model may be expected.
Important model and software limits
Pixel settings are not uniform across generations. Menu names, available screen-saver types, charging triggers and Always-on Display controls can change with Android updates and regional or model differences. Google’s current screen-saver instructions include Android 14-and-later qualifications, so use the labels displayed on your phone as the final authority.
