A SKU, or stock keeping unit, is an internal code a business uses to identify and track an item it sells or stores. Businesses can assign different SKUs to variants—such as a shirt in different sizes and colors—so inventory, sales, and fulfillment records refer to the exact item.

What does SKU stand for?

SKU stands for stock keeping unit. It is usually a retailer’s or other business’s own product code, not a universal identifier assigned by a standards organization. Shopify Help Center defines them this way: “SKUs (stock keeping units) are codes that you can use internally to track your inventory and report on your sales.” Shopify Help Center, “Using SKUs to manage your inventory”

A SKU may refer to a particular sellable version of a product, not just the general product type. For example, a business might use one code for a blue medium T-shirt and another for a blue large T-shirt. If a shirt comes in three sizes and four colors, each of its 12 size-and-color combinations can have its own SKU.

What do businesses use SKUs for?

A SKU gives staff and business systems a shared reference for a specific item. When each variant has a distinct code and records are kept accurately, the code can support everyday inventory and sales work.

  • Inventory records: distinguish products and variants when counting or updating stock.
  • Sales reporting: examine sales at the product or variant level.
  • Storage and fulfillment: help staff locate and pack the intended item.
  • Returns and customer questions: help staff identify the item involved. A printed SKU label can be useful, but a physical sticker is optional.
  • System connections: apps or services may use SKUs to match inventory records across systems.
  • Replenishment planning: historical item-level records can help a business assess product movement and plan restocking.

These are capabilities, not automatic outcomes: a code does not itself produce accurate reports, prevent stockouts, or forecast demand. Those depend on complete records and the systems and processes used to maintain them. Shopify describes these inventory, reporting, and planning uses in its SKU guide.

How to create a practical SKU

There is no universal SKU format or maximum length. Choose a short, consistent code that is unique within your business and includes only attributes that help your staff distinguish or handle the item. Shopify Help Center recommends meaningful characters, consistent abbreviations, avoiding spaces and easily confused characters such as zero and the letter O, and leaving room for catalog growth. It offers 16 characters or fewer as a guideline, not an industry-wide requirement; the right length also depends on the catalog and the systems that must accept the code.

  1. Choose useful attributes. Decide which details staff need in the code, such as product type, color, or size. Avoid encoding details that are likely to change or that your team does not use.
  2. Set a consistent order and shorthand. For example, always place product type before color and size, and use the same abbreviation for each attribute throughout the catalog.
  3. Use clear separators if helpful. Dashes can make parts easier to read; avoid spaces and characters that are easy to mistake for one another.
  4. Give each sellable variant a unique code. Check existing records before assigning a code so it does not identify a different item.
  5. Test it in your workflow. Confirm staff can read and enter it, and that your inventory or sales systems accept it.

Made-up example: TS-BLU-M could mean a T-shirt, blue, medium. This is an illustration, not a standard. A business may instead use a sequence or another format if that suits its operation.

SKU vs. barcode, GTIN, UPC, and model number

These terms are related, but they do not all refer to the same thing. An SKU is an internal business code. A barcode is a machine-readable symbol that can represent an identifier; it is not automatically the SKU. A business can store SKU and barcode values in separate fields.

Identifier Who assigns or defines it Where it is unique What it supports
SKU The business using it Within that business’s records Internal inventory, sales, and fulfillment workflows
GTIN GS1 system For identifying a trade item across the marketplace Recognizing a trade item across businesses and trading partners
Barcode Depends on the identifier and barcode system The symbol itself is not necessarily a unique identifier Machine-readable scanning of encoded information
UPC A retail product identifier in the GTIN system As defined by its identifier, rather than by an individual retailer’s SKU records Identifying products in retail contexts; it is not a synonym for every barcode or GTIN
Model number Typically the manufacturer Within the manufacturer’s product or model range Distinguishing a product model, rather than tracking a seller’s own stock records

GS1 describes SKU as an industry term generally used for a retailer’s internal product code. A GTIN, by contrast, is a GS1 identification key intended to identify a trade item across the marketplace. Two retailers selling the same trade item may use the same GTIN while assigning different SKUs. See the GS1 Glossary and GS1 US explanation of GTINs.

UPC is a familiar retail identifier associated with product barcodes, but “barcode” is the symbol or representation, not the name of one universal identifier. Likewise, a manufacturer’s model number is not necessarily the code a seller uses to manage its own stock. Amazon’s FNSKU is a platform-specific barcode term; it is not the general meaning of SKU.

Do all businesses need SKUs?

No universal rule requires every business to assign SKUs. They are useful when a business needs a consistent internal reference for products or variants across inventory, sales, storage, and fulfillment. A small catalog may be manageable without a complex code structure; as products, variants, locations, or connected systems grow, a consistent identifier can make records easier to maintain and use.
