Some long-time T-Mobile customers have received notices that their older plans will be retired and their accounts moved to newer plans. Reports say customers whose bills increase could pay up to $6 more per line per month—but that is a reported maximum, not a universal increase. Your notice and bill determine what changes for your account.

What is happening to T-Mobile customers’ plans?

Reports published in June 2026 said T-Mobile was notifying some customers that older rate plans would be retired and their accounts migrated to newer plans. The plan families mentioned in coverage include Simple Choice, ONE and ONE Plus, Magenta, and some grandfathered Sprint plans. That is not a complete official list, and being on one of those plans does not by itself mean your account will change. Check the notice sent to you and the plan details in your account. (Droid Life; Tom’s Guide; Kiplinger)

How much could the bill rise?

Droid Life and Tom’s Guide reported that customers receiving an increase could see up to $6 more per line per month. The amount depends on the account and the notice; it is not a flat increase for every T-Mobile customer, or necessarily for every line on an affected account. Compare the new plan’s stated recurring price with your current bill rather than treating the headline maximum as your personal increase. (Droid Life; Tom’s Guide)

What does T-Mobile say?

As reported by Droid Life, T-Mobile described the newer plans as offering enhanced features and improved network and service experiences, while saying existing benefits would be preserved. That explanation does not settle whether the change is worthwhile for an individual: the relevant comparison is the actual new bill and the features that matter to you. (Droid Life)

Fierce Network separately reported T-Mobile’s statement that prices covered by its five-year commitment were not being adjusted. That statement concerns the commitment’s scope; it should not be taken to mean every older-plan migration notice is covered by it. (Fierce Network)

Check for lost free lines or promotional credits

A separate reported problem affected some customers during migration: Ars Technica said some promotional free lines disappeared, and T-Mobile acknowledged technical errors and said it was working to fix them. The coverage did not establish how many accounts were affected. Check each line and promotion on your account after the change, and compare them with your prior bill or saved account records. If a line or credit is missing, contact T-Mobile and ask for the account to be reviewed; do not assume the migration’s stated price change explains a missing promotion. (Ars Technica)

Decide whether staying or switching makes sense

There is no universal best response to a plan migration. Compare what you will actually pay and receive after the change with current alternatives available to you. A lower advertised price may not be cheaper for your account if it excludes a feature, line benefit, or credit you use.

  • Total recurring cost: Add the service charges for every line and account-level feature, and account for taxes and fees as presented by each carrier.
  • Promotions and line benefits: Include promotional credits and free lines in the comparison, and confirm their terms and continued presence.
  • Coverage: Check service where you live, work, and travel—not only a carrier’s general coverage claims.
  • Features: Compare the hotspot, international, and other plan features you actually use.
  • Device balance: Check whether you still owe money on a phone before changing carriers; include any remaining balance in the cost of switching.

Prices and terms can change, so verify current offers and coverage directly with each carrier before making a decision. Android Authority’s 2026 guide also recommends checking the bill and remaining device balances before leaving. (Android Authority; PhoneArena)

What to do before leaving T-Mobile

  1. Read the migration notice. Note the plan named, the effective date, the expected recurring charge, and any benefits the notice says will continue.
  2. Review the next bill. Check the new plan charge, every line, and each promotional credit or free line. Save the bill and notice so you can document any mismatch.
  3. Check device balances. Review each financed device and include outstanding amounts in your switching calculation.
  4. Compare available alternatives. Verify each option’s total cost, coverage at your regular locations, and the specific features and promotions you need.
  5. Confirm the current cancellation and porting steps. Android Authority’s 2026 guide says cancellation requires contacting customer service rather than completing the process entirely in T-Life. Confirm the current procedure with T-Mobile before starting a transfer. (Android Authority)

If a free line or credit disappears after migration, raise that as a distinct account issue with T-Mobile and keep a record of the response. Ars Technica reported that the company acknowledged migration errors, but did not establish how widely they occurred. (Ars Technica)

Does the backlash mean customers are leaving in large numbers?

Reports describe complaints and some customers considering a switch, but the coverage cited here does not establish representative customer sentiment or show that customers are leaving at scale because of the migration. Treat social posts and individual accounts as anecdotes, not a measure of how many subscribers are changing carriers. (Ars Technica; PhoneArena)
