Steam Deck OLED has 16 GB of onboard LPDDR5 unified memory. That is one shared pool for the CPU and integrated GPU, not 16 GB of system RAM plus a separate, fixed 8 GB graphics-memory pool. Valve says the GPU can access up to 8 GB of that shared memory depending on workload. A game’s Windows RAM requirement is useful context, but it is not a Steam Deck performance guarantee; always check the title’s Steam Deck compatibility rating and Deck-specific notes.

How much memory does a Steam Deck have?

Valve’s technical specifications for the Steam Deck OLED list 16 GB of onboard LPDDR5 memory running at 6400 MT/s. “Onboard” means the memory is part of the device’s hardware configuration rather than a normal user-replaceable desktop module.

The 16 GB figure is the total physical memory available to the handheld. It is shared by the Zen 2 CPU and the RDNA 2 integrated graphics in the 6 nm AMD APU. Consequently, the Deck does not have a conventional arrangement of a fixed system-RAM amount alongside a separate graphics card with its own dedicated VRAM.

Unified memory in plain language

Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ describes the design as 16 GB of unified memory. It says 1 GB is dedicated for GPU use and that, depending on workload, the GPU can access up to 8 GB. Those numbers describe allocations and access within the same 16 GB pool; they must not be added together to claim that the Deck has 24 GB.

Valve also says that more than 1 GB is available to the GPU, that up to 8 GB can be shared at present, and that the amount can change from game to game. A graphically demanding title may therefore receive a different balance between CPU and GPU memory from a lighter title. The advertised capacity remains 16 GB.

What “RAM required” on a Steam game page actually tells you

Steam store pages commonly show Windows minimum and recommended specifications. Those figures describe the publisher’s stated requirements for a particular Windows build, usually under assumptions about the operating system, drivers, background services and graphics hardware. They are not direct measurements of how much memory the SteamOS version or a Windows game running through Proton will consume on a Deck.

SteamOS is based on Arch Linux, as Valve explains on its SteamOS information page. A Linux-native build, a Windows build translated through Proton, and a game with a separate launcher can have different memory behavior. The same 16 GB requirement can therefore lead to different results across games.

Minimum versus recommended memory

  • Minimum RAM: the publisher’s baseline for starting or operating the specified build under its stated conditions. It is not a promise of a particular frame rate on Deck.
  • Recommended RAM: a target for a more comfortable experience on the stated platform. It still does not account for every Deck-specific setting, compatibility issue or translation overhead.
  • No numeric Linux figure: some listings identify SteamOS or “SteamDeck” hardware without publishing a Linux RAM number. That omission does not establish either a low or high memory need.

Use the number as one clue about the game’s scale, then confirm the platform build, compatibility rating, graphics options and any developer notes. Treating a Windows recommendation as a hard Deck cutoff is more precise than the evidence allows.

Example: why one listing cannot answer every Deck question

The Fading Faith listing illustrates the difference between storefront fields. Its Windows requirements list 8 GB of minimum memory and 16 GB recommended. In the SteamOS/Linux section, the operating-system, processor, graphics and sound-card fields are labeled “SteamDeck” rather than supplying a numeric Linux RAM requirement.

This is an example of how a publisher presents one game, not evidence that all games with 16 GB Windows recommendations behave alike. It also shows why a missing Linux number should not be converted into an invented Deck threshold.

How Steam Deck compatibility ratings relate to memory

Valve’s Steam Deck and Steam Machine Compatibility Review translates a broader review into the badge shown to customers. The review considers controls, text input, resolution and text legibility, launchers, performance and other practical aspects of playing on the handheld. It is not published as a RAM-use score.

Badge What Valve says it means What it does not mean
Verified The game passes the compatibility checks without configuration work. It is not a disclosure of a specific memory requirement or a guarantee that every setting uses the same amount of RAM.
Playable The game functions, but manual user work may be required. It is not proof that the game exceeds a particular RAM limit.
Unsupported The game does not function because of incompatibility with Proton or specific hardware components. It does not identify RAM as the cause unless the developer or Valve provides that detail.
Unknown The game has not completed the compatibility review. It is not a prediction that the game will run badly or well.

A badge answers the practical question “How much setup and risk should I expect on Deck?” It does not answer “How many gigabytes did this title use in a measured test?” Keep those questions separate.

How to judge a game before installing it

  1. Open the game’s Steam store page. Read the Windows minimum and recommended memory figures, but note the operating system and the exact build to which they apply.
  2. Check the Deck badge. Verified, Playable, Unsupported or Unknown gives a broader compatibility signal than the RAM line alone.
  3. Read the Deck-specific details. Look for notes about text size, launchers, controller input, keyboard or mouse work, resolution and performance.
  4. Identify the rendering path. A native Linux/SteamOS build and a Windows build running through Proton can have different requirements and behavior.
  5. Check developer documentation or current patch notes. A game that has changed engine, textures or launcher may no longer behave exactly as an older requirement table suggests.
  6. Set realistic graphics expectations. Lower texture quality, resolution or background activity can change memory pressure, but no setting guarantees that a title will fit a particular allocation.

This process avoids turning one storefront number into a yes-or-no rule that Valve has not published.

Can the Steam Deck run a game that requires 16 GB of RAM?

Often it can, but the requirement alone cannot settle the question. The OLED Deck has 16 GB total unified memory, while the game, SteamOS, Proton where applicable, drivers and background processes all draw from that pool. A “16 GB recommended” Windows entry is not a claim that the game will consume exactly 16 GB on Deck, nor is it a guarantee that the title will achieve a target frame rate.

Conversely, a game listing 8 GB minimum is not automatically easy for Deck. Compatibility can fail because of an anti-cheat system, launcher, unsupported input method, unreadable text, a graphics feature or poor performance rather than because the device ran out of memory.

Why total capacity and available capacity differ

Some of the 16 GB is in use before a game reaches its menu. SteamOS and desktop services need memory, and the integrated GPU may receive a larger or smaller share as the workload changes. The useful question is not whether a game’s printed number is below 16 GB; it is whether the complete Deck configuration can run that specific build acceptably.

Memory pressure can show up as stutter, long asset-loading pauses, texture pop-in, a crash or heavy swapping. Those symptoms can also come from storage speed, shader compilation, a driver issue or a game bug. Without a title-specific measurement, do not label every hitch a RAM shortage.

How much VRAM does the Steam Deck have?

There is no separate fixed VRAM capacity to quote in the way one would quote a discrete graphics card. Valve’s FAQ wording is: “Steam Deck has 16 gigabyte of unified memory. One gigabyte that’s dedicated for the GPU, but depending on workload the GPU can access up to 8 GB.” Valve further explains that more than 1 GB is available to the GPU and that up to 8 GB can be shared on a game-by-game basis.

The practical interpretation is a shared 16 GB budget with a variable GPU allocation. Saying “16 GB RAM plus 8 GB VRAM” double-counts the same physical memory and overstates the device’s capacity. Saying “exactly 1 GB of VRAM” is also misleading because the GPU can access more when the workload calls for it.

Does a microSD card or dock add RAM?

No. Valve lists microSD support as storage expansion, not memory expansion. A larger card can hold more games, but it does not increase the 16 GB unified-memory pool. A dock, external display or accessory likewise does not turn storage into RAM.

Do not assume that installing a game on a faster or larger drive solves a memory-capacity problem. Storage can affect loading and space management; it is a different resource from working memory.

Can you upgrade the Steam Deck’s RAM?

The cited OLED specification identifies the memory as onboard LPDDR5. Valve’s published material does not document a user RAM-upgrade path or promise that owners can replace the memory with a larger module. That is a limit of the available product documentation, not a claim that every repair or hardware modification is impossible.

Plan around the configuration you buy. If a game needs more memory than the Deck can provide for its workload, a storage purchase, dock or accessory is not a documented capacity upgrade.

What the 16 GB design means for handheld-PC comparisons

When comparing handheld PCs, compare like with like instead of copying a headline RAM number. The useful axes are:

  • Total physical memory.
  • Whether CPU and GPU share unified memory or use separate system RAM and VRAM.
  • How much memory the GPU can reserve or access.
  • Which operating-system build the game requirements describe.
  • Whether the manufacturer or storefront performs device-specific compatibility testing.
  • Whether the memory is user-accessible for upgrades.

A device with a larger advertised number is not automatically faster, and a separate VRAM figure is not directly comparable with the Deck’s shared allocation. Clock speed, memory bandwidth, processor performance, graphics settings and software support also shape results. Valve’s published figures establish the Steam Deck OLED configuration; claims about another handheld require that manufacturer’s own specifications and compatibility evidence.

Common mistakes when reading Steam Deck memory requirements

  • Adding 16 GB and 8 GB. The GPU-access figure is within unified memory, not an extra pool.
  • Treating Verified as a RAM benchmark. The badge covers controls, text, launchers, resolution, performance and other checks.
  • Using a Windows minimum as a Deck verdict. Operating system, Proton, drivers and game builds can differ.
  • Assuming a low RAM number guarantees smooth play. Compatibility failures can have causes unrelated to capacity.
  • Calling storage an upgrade. A microSD card expands game storage, not working memory.
  • Promising a universal cutoff. Valve has not published one threshold that predicts every game’s Deck performance.

A practical decision rule

For an individual title, treat the evidence in layers: first the Steam Deck badge and notes, then the game’s operating-system-specific requirements, then developer documentation and current reports. If the badge is Verified, the game has passed Valve’s listed checks without configuration work, but you still should not translate that into a measured RAM figure. If it is Playable, read the required manual steps before buying or installing. If it is Unsupported or Unknown, the memory line cannot compensate for the missing or negative compatibility evidence.

The most defensible answer to “How much RAM do handheld PC games need?” is therefore game-specific. The Steam Deck OLED supplies 16 GB of shared LPDDR5 memory, and titles must fit their complete CPU, GPU and software workload into that design. Published Windows requirements help establish scale; they do not replace the Deck compatibility review.
