If Pokémon Hyper Emerald starts a new game or cannot find your progress, first check that the save file is beside the correct ROM and that both files have matching names before the extensions. If you changed ROM builds, use the in-game battery save (.sav), not a save state. For the documented case where a save disappears after the League, the Hyper Emerald Guide recommends setting the emulator’s save type to Flash 128K. These fixes apply to the release and symptom described; they are not universal settings for every Hyper Emerald build or emulator.
First identify which Hyper Emerald build you are using
“Pokémon Hyper Emerald” can refer to different releases and community builds, so the right fix depends on the ROM and patch involved. The compatibility instructions for the Nn-Exe English + QoL patch specify the Chinese Pokémon Hyper Emerald: Lost Artifacts v5.7 “bugfix 2” build as the base. They do not describe a patch for vanilla Pokémon Emerald or every other Hyper Emerald version.
That distinction matters because a save can appear to vanish when the actual problem is that the emulator has opened a different ROM, or a patch expects a different underlying build. A file that worked with one revision is not automatically interchangeable with another revision simply because both files are labeled Hyper Emerald.
Before renaming, replacing, or trying to migrate files, record the exact game version, patch name, revision, emulator, and device. Take a screenshot of the emulator’s game information if that is easier than writing it down. Keep an untouched copy of the current .sav somewhere outside the active game folder. If you are applying a patch, use the checksum listed for that exact release to verify its input or output as appropriate; checksum values can differ between release pages and revisions. The documented base ROM SHA-1 is f785bed9d9e82e8da13ea4a5ad747e3ea4ec7ba9, but do not treat it as the checksum for a patched ROM.

Diagnose the symptom before changing anything
- The game starts a new save after a rename, move, or update: check the ROM and

Do not delete the existing save or overwrite it with a new in-game save while investigating. A newly created save may replace the file you are trying to recover. Work from a copied file whenever a step involves renaming, patching, changing save settings, or restarting after a state load.
Fix a missing save after renaming or moving the ROM
Emulators commonly associate a battery save with the ROM by filename. The Hyper Emerald FAQ puts it simply: “Emulators match the .sav by file name.” The base names need to match, and the save must be in a location the emulator checks.
- Close the game and emulator safely. This helps avoid an active session writing over the save while you inspect files. If the emulator has a separate “save and exit” command, use it before closing.
- Find the ROM and battery save. The ROM may end in
.gba; the battery save typically ends in.sav. Make sure file extensions are visible if your file manager hides them. A file that appears to beHyperEmerald.savmay actually beHyperEmerald.sav.savwhen extensions are hidden. - Compare the names before the extensions. For example,
HyperEmerald.gbaandHyperEmerald.savhave matching base names.HyperEmerald-patched.gbaandHyperEmerald.savdo not. Differences in capitalization, punctuation, spaces, or an added “(1)” can also leave the emulator looking for a different name. - Make a backup, then rename one file if needed. Rename the ROM or save so the base names match; do not change the extension. Preserve the original file as a separate backup. Rename a copy of the save first if you are uncertain which ROM should keep the original name.
- Check the emulator’s ROM/save folder. Put the
.savin the folder the emulator uses for that game’s battery saves. Some emulators keep saves beside the ROM, while others use a configured save directory. If you do not know which folder that is, check the emulator’s own save-directory setting or documentation; there is no single folder path that applies to every emulator or device. - Check for duplicate candidates. If two saves have nearly identical names, move the extras to a temporary backup folder rather than deleting them. Leaving several possible saves in the active folder can make it unclear which one the emulator opened or overwrote.
- Open the intended ROM and check the result. If the old progress appears, make an in-game save and close the game normally. Reopen it once to confirm the new battery save is recognized. If not, close without saving and restore your backup before trying a different file or configuration.
Matching names and folders are the first checks when a save vanishes after a ROM rename or update. They do not prove that a save from a different game build is compatible. A correctly named file can still be rejected if the ROM revision, patch, or save-memory expectation changed.

Move progress between ROM builds with a battery save
A battery save records progress through the game’s normal save function and is usually stored as a .sav file. A save state—often ending in .ss0 or .state—is a snapshot of an emulator session, including emulator memory at the moment the state was created. These are different mechanisms even when they were created from the same playthrough.
The Hyper Emerald Guide says save states do not transfer between ROM builds. Loading one from an older build with a newer ROM can fail or produce behavior that does not reflect a clean load of the battery save. Treat a state as a convenient pause point for the exact ROM build that created it, not as a portable backup.

- Open the old ROM build. If it still works, load the current game and use the game’s own save option. Wait until the save completes and, if the game displays a confirmation, let it finish before closing.
- Close the old session and back up its
.sav. Keep the original unchanged so you can return to it if migration fails. Do not rely on the state file as your only copy. - Confirm the new ROM is a compatible build. If using Nn-Exe English + QoL, its instructions specify the Chinese Lost Artifacts v5.7 “bugfix 2” base; do not assume a different Hyper Emerald release is interchangeable.
- Place or rename a copy of the battery save for the new ROM. Match the new ROM’s base filename and put the copy in the emulator’s save folder. Keep the old-named file in your backup location.
- Launch the new ROM without loading the old state file. Check whether the game recognizes the battery save, then save in-game again if it loads successfully. This creates a fresh battery save associated with the new build and filename.
If you only have a state file and no battery save, the project documentation does not promise that the state can be migrated. Keep the state file intact, but do not treat it as a substitute for a transferable battery save. If the old ROM can still open the state, use that exact ROM to reach normal gameplay and make a battery save before attempting any build change.
Fix the documented save loss after the League
For the specific report that a save disappears after the League, the Hyper Emerald Guide recommends setting the emulator’s save type to Flash 128K, explaining that the hack needs a full 128 KB save. The guide’s wording is explicit: “If your save disappears after the League, set the emulator’s save type to Flash 128K: the hack needs the full 128 KB save.”

- Back up the current
.sav. Copy it to a separate location before changing the emulator setting or relaunching the game. If there are multiple candidate saves, preserve all of them. - Open the emulator’s game or core save settings. Look for a save type or save memory option. Handle an empty Items pocket after loading an older state
The Hyper Emerald FAQ describes an older emulator state restoring stale memory and recommends resetting the game. Technical notes describe a v1.6 migration case: an old save state could skip loading the battery save, after which the Items pocket appeared empty following a later map or battle transition. Restarting the game loaded and migrated the save in that documented scenario.
If your symptoms match that case, close and restart the game so it can load the battery save rather than continuing from the stale state. Do not keep playing from the old state while testing; doing so can carry stale memory forward and may obscure whether the battery save was loaded. After the restart, check the Items pocket and other progress, then make a fresh in-game save if the expected data is present.

The fix is specific to the reported version and sequence. It does not establish that resetting can recover every missing save, and it is not a reason to overwrite the battery save or discard a backup. If the Items pocket remains empty after a clean restart, record whether the ROM is v1.6, whether a state was loaded, and whether the problem began after a map or battle transition.
Patching and checksum checks
The repository’s patch workflow names a particular base ROM rather than a generic Emerald file. For the Nn-Exe English + QoL patch, confirm that the input is the Chinese Hyper Emerald: Lost Artifacts v5.7 “bugfix 2” build. Vanilla Pokémon Emerald and other listed Hyper Emerald releases are not interchangeable inputs simply because they use the same .gba extension.

Result checksums can vary across release pages and revisions, so consult the checksum published for the exact patch release you are applying instead of copying a result hash without naming its version. If the checksum does not match, stop before replacing a working ROM or moving a save onto the patched file.
Keep the original ROM, patch file, patched output, and save backup separately while testing. This makes it possible to return to the known working build and avoids confusing a patching error with a save-file failure.
A safe order of operations
- Write down the exact ROM, patch, emulator, device, and symptom.
- Copy every existing
.sav,.ss0, and.statefile to a backup folder. - Identify whether the missing progress came from a battery save or a state.
- Check the ROM and
.savbase filenames and the emulator’s save directory. - If changing builds, return to the old build and make a normal in-game save.
- Use the compatible base and patch; verify the checksum for that exact release.
- For post-League loss only, test Flash 128K after backing up.
- For the v1.6 empty-Items-pocket scenario, restart so the battery save can load instead of continuing from the old state.
- If the problem persists, stop making writes and collect diagnostic details before seeking conversion or editing help.

The documented checks cannot identify every cause without more detail. Before attempting a save converter, editor, or other change, gather the information that distinguishes a filename problem from a build, emulator, or save-type issue:
