You can protect much of your phone’s data before a loss, but no single backup guarantees that every file and app setting will return. On Android, turn on Google Account backup and use Google Photos for photos and videos. On iPhone, enable iCloud Backup and check separately synced services such as iCloud Photos. Verify that the backup completed, that the data you care about is covered, and that you can access the account.
Start by identifying what kind of phone you have
Android and iPhone handle backups differently. A backup is also not the same as syncing: backups preserve selected device information for restoration, while synced services keep particular kinds of data available through an account. Before changing phones, check both the backup status and any separate sync settings.
Back up an Android phone
Turn on Google Account backup
- Open Settings and search for Backup or Google backup. Menu names and locations vary by Android version and phone maker.
- Open the backup settings for your Google Account and turn on backup. Select the available device-data categories you want saved.
- For photos and videos, use Google Photos backup; do not assume these files are included in the device-backup categories.
- Check the backup details and account storage. Wait for the selected categories to show On, indicating they have been saved.
Google says backup can take up to 24 hours. Its Android Help page says a Google Account includes 15 GB of storage at no charge, shared across account services, and that Google One provides access to additional storage. Confirm that you have enough space for the data you intend to keep. Google’s Android backup instructions

Google Account backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS. However, some apps do not back up or restore all their data. Check the backup behavior of any app that holds information you cannot replace, and use its own export or backup option if available. The listed device categories are not a promise that arbitrary downloads or every local file will be saved.

iCloud Backup stores information and settings that are not already synced to iCloud. Data in iCloud Photos or Messages in iCloud syncs separately and is not also included in the daily device backup. Check those services independently so you know whether they are syncing the material you expect. Apple’s explanation of what iCloud Backup contains
Consider an encrypted computer backup
Apple also supports backing up an iPhone to a Mac or PC. The amount you can store depends on available computer storage. Computer-backup encryption is off by default; choose the encrypted-backup option if you want the computer backup encrypted. Apple says iCloud backups are always encrypted. Apple’s cited backup-method page is for India and describes iCloud storage capacity up to 12 TB, or up to 14 TB combined with Apple One Premier. These are regional plan limits; availability and capacity can vary by region. Check the options shown for your own account rather than assuming those limits apply everywhere.

| Method | What it offers | Storage and access considerations | Encryption details in the cited guidance |

A cloud backup is convenient when you have an internet connection and can sign in to the account. A computer backup gives you a local copy, but you need access to that computer and enough free space. On either platform, account access matters: keep your sign-in and recovery methods current so losing the phone does not also leave you unable to reach the backup.

Moving between Android and iPhone
Do not expect an Android backup to restore directly onto an iPhone, or an iPhone backup to restore directly onto Android. Google’s iPhone-to-Android guidance directs users to request a copy of iCloud photos and videos through Apple’s privacy site, then upload that copy to a Google Account. That is a transfer route for photos and videos, not a promise that all phone data or app state will move. Google’s instructions for transferring iCloud photos and videos
Do a backup check before you need it
- Confirm the latest successful backup date or that the selected Android categories show On.
- Check that the account has enough available storage for the data you intend to protect.
- Verify photo and video backup or sync separately from the phone’s device backup.
- Identify important apps that need their own backup or export steps.
- Make sure you can sign in to the account from another device and access its recovery methods.
- If you use an iPhone computer backup, confirm the computer has free space and decide whether to enable encryption.
A phone backup reduces the risk of losing important data, but the result depends on what was selected, what each app supports, available storage, successful completion, and account access. Check those details while you still have the phone.
