Choose NGINX when you need highly granular policy, mature enterprise authentication integrations, and explicit control over certificates, protocols, and traffic rules. Choose Caddy when secure defaults, compact configuration, automatic certificate workflows, and a simple client-authentication trust pool matter more than directive-level tuning. Both can authenticate clients at the edge and authenticate upstream servers with mutual TLS (mTLS). Neither is inherently safer: the result depends on certificate trust, hostname validation, forwarded-header boundaries, secret storage, and renewal operations.
The important decision is not which web server has “more TLS.” It is where identity is checked, which certificate authorities are trusted, how the proxy authenticates the next hop, and how you will operate those controls during renewals, outages, and incident response.
What you are actually comparing
A reverse proxy can use TLS in two separate connections. The first is between an outside client and the proxy. The second is between the proxy and an application server. Mutual TLS adds certificate authentication to either connection, but the trust relationship is different in each case.
- Edge mTLS: the proxy validates a client certificate before forwarding a request. This is useful for private APIs, machine-to-machine access, partner networks, and administrative endpoints.
- Proxy-to-upstream mTLS: the proxy presents its own client certificate to the backend, while validating the backend certificate and its issuing CA. This protects traffic after the edge and prevents an impostor service from receiving credentials.
- Identity and authorization: a valid certificate proves possession of a private key and membership in a trusted certificate hierarchy. It does not, by itself, decide whether that identity may call a particular URL or method. Authorization still belongs in proxy rules, an authentication service, or the application.
NGINX expresses these controls through explicit directives. Caddy exposes them through a compact, module-based configuration. The operational difference is substantial even when the resulting TLS handshake is equivalent.

Edge mTLS: authenticating clients at the public boundary
How NGINX handles client certificates
NGINX separates the trust store from the enforcement decision. ssl_client_certificate points to the CA certificates that may issue client certificates. ssl_verify_client then determines whether a connecting client must pass certificate validation. This separation makes it straightforward to use different client CAs on different virtual servers or locations, but it also means every trust-file and policy directive must be reviewed together.
A typical protected server enables TLS for the listener, installs the server certificate and key, loads the client CA bundle, and turns on client verification. The certificate chain presented by a client must lead to a CA in that bundle, and the private key must match the client certificate. If a partner has an intermediate CA, include the appropriate chain in the trust material rather than trusting an unrelated leaf certificate by mistake.
How Caddy handles client certificates
Caddy puts the policy under the tls directive. Use request when the server should ask for a certificate without requiring one, require when a certificate must be presented, verify_if_given when a supplied certificate must validate but a missing certificate is accepted, and require_and_verify when both presentation and successful validation are mandatory.
The client trust pool contains the CA certificates or leaf certificates accepted for authentication. A custom verifier can add checks that are not represented by ordinary chain validation, including revocation-related policy. Keep the trust pool limited to the authorities that should access this service; trusting a broad enterprise root can unintentionally authorize every certificate issued under it.
Choosing the edge policy
- Private machine API: use a mandatory, verified mode. A request that lacks a certificate should fail before it reaches the application.
- Migration from bearer tokens: use an optional or verified-if-present policy only when the application deliberately handles both populations. Do not mistake “certificate optional” for “certificate authenticated.”
- Mixed public and partner traffic: place the mTLS endpoint on a separate hostname or listener when possible. This keeps a permissive policy from leaking into a route that was intended to be private.
Proxy-to-upstream mTLS: protecting the second hop
NGINX upstream configuration
NGINX’s upstream-security model makes each trust decision visible in the configuration. The following is a representative pattern; replace paths, names, and verification depth with values from your PKI:
location / {
proxy_pass https://app.internal:8443;
proxy_ssl_certificate /etc/nginx/pki/proxy-client.crt;
proxy_ssl_certificate_key /etc/nginx/pki/proxy-client.key;
proxy_ssl_trusted_certificate /etc/nginx/pki/upstream-ca.pem;
proxy_ssl_verify on;
proxy_ssl_verify_depth 2;
proxy_ssl_protocols TLSv1.2 TLSv1.3;
}
proxy_ssl_certificate and proxy_ssl_certificate_key identify the proxy to the backend. proxy_ssl_trusted_certificate limits which issuers can sign the backend certificate, while proxy_ssl_verify on makes that validation mandatory. The depth setting must accommodate the actual chain without accepting an unexpectedly long one. Use the backend’s certificate name for SNI and hostname verification when the upstream address is an alias or an IP address; otherwise a perfectly valid certificate can still fail name validation, or a misaddressed connection can be accepted if name checks are incomplete.

Caddy upstream configuration
Caddy configures the same relationship inside the HTTP transport used by reverse_proxy:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →example.com {
reverse_proxy https://app.internal:8443 {

tls_client_auth /etc/caddy/pki/proxy-client.crt /etc/caddy/pki/proxy-client.key
tls_trust_pool file /etc/caddy/pki/upstream-ca.pem
tls_server_name app.internal
}
}
}
tls_client_auth supplies the proxy’s certificate and key. tls_trust_pool defines the CA or leaf material trusted for the backend, and tls_server_name makes the certificate-name and SNI expectation explicit. The upstream URL itself enables HTTPS; the transport options add client authentication and controlled trust.
Do not use tls_insecure_skip_verify to make a failing deployment “work.” Caddy’s documentation warns that it turns off TLS handshake verification and leaves the connection vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks. Fix the CA bundle, server name, certificate chain, or backend configuration instead.
Connection reuse and handshake cost
Every new TLS connection requires a handshake. NGINX’s upstream documentation notes that a full handshake is CPU-intensive. Reusing persistent proxy-to-backend connections reduces repeated cryptographic work and avoids turning a burst of short requests into a burst of full handshakes. Size connection pools and keepalive behavior for your traffic pattern, and monitor handshake failures separately from ordinary HTTP errors. No independently measured performance figure establishes a universal speed advantage for either proxy.
Identity integrations beyond certificates
mTLS answers “does this peer possess a key issued by a trusted authority?” Reverse-proxy security often also requires “is this identity allowed to perform this operation?”

Where NGINX is stronger
NGINX’s documented security surface includes HTTP Basic Authentication, subrequest authentication, JWT authentication, and OpenID Connect, in addition to TLS termination. It also provides connection and request limits and geographical controls. These features let an operator combine certificate authentication with an authorization service, token validation, rate controls, or location-based policy in one established configuration model.

Where Caddy fits
Caddy’s documented TLS custom verifier is useful when certificate acceptance needs an additional check, such as a revocation-related decision. For JWT, OIDC, or external authorization, treat Caddy as the TLS and routing layer and select a compatible module, sidecar, or upstream authentication service. Verify the exact module’s maintenance and configuration model before making it part of a security boundary; the core reverse-proxy configuration alone does not establish a full OIDC policy.
Certificate lifecycle and secret handling
Public certificates
Caddy is designed around automatic certificate workflows and can reduce the amount of renewal plumbing an operator writes. That convenience still requires DNS, listener reachability, storage permissions, and monitoring. An automatically renewed certificate is not useful if the process cannot write its storage directory or if an intermediate firewall blocks validation.
NGINX makes certificate files and reloads explicit. This is predictable in tightly controlled environments and integrates well with an existing internal PKI or secret-distribution system, but renewal automation is your responsibility. A renewal job must obtain the new certificate, verify that the private key matches, install files atomically, and reload the proxy without dropping active traffic.
Private PKI and partner certificates
For internal services and partner APIs, use a dedicated CA hierarchy and distribute only the CA certificates needed at each trust boundary. Keep server certificates, client certificates, and CA bundles in separate files so a rotation does not accidentally replace the wrong object. Restrict private-key permissions to the proxy account, protect backups, and record which service owns each key.
Revocation and emergency rotation
Certificate expiry is not the only failure mode. A stolen key, decommissioned partner, or compromised issuing CA requires revocation or immediate trust-store removal. Caddy’s custom verifier can support checks beyond ordinary chain validation. With either proxy, an emergency response plan should identify the trust file, the reload or configuration-apply procedure, and the test request that proves the old certificate is rejected.
Trusted-proxy boundaries and real client IPs
When one proxy sits in front of another, the inner service must distinguish a header supplied by a trusted proxy from a header supplied by an attacker. Caddy’s documented deployment pattern uses trusted_proxies so a front instance can preserve the real client IP for a back instance. Restrict that setting to the actual proxy CIDRs, not an entire private address space, and ensure the front proxy overwrites or sanitizes forwarded headers before sending them onward.

The same principle applies to NGINX or any intermediary: define which hop may set the forwarded client address, protocol, and host; reject or replace those headers from untrusted clients; and document the exact network boundary. mTLS between front and back instances is especially valuable when the hops cross an untrusted network. Caddy’s deployment guidance describes an optional design using an ACME server for that front-to-back certificate relationship.
Client-IP preservation is an observability and authorization control, not merely a logging preference. If an application uses the forwarded address for rate limits, audit records, or access decisions, an overly broad trusted-proxy range can let a client forge its apparent origin.
Operational differences that affect the security outcome
Configuration review
NGINX’s explicit directives make a security review granular: reviewers can trace each certificate, CA bundle, verification switch, protocol version, and upstream. The cost is configuration volume and the possibility of a forgotten directive in one server block.
Caddy’s compact model makes a common secure deployment easier to read and reproduce. Its defaults are intended to be secure, but compact syntax does not remove the need to review trust pools, hostnames, client-auth modes, and exceptions. A single broad CA file or an accidental insecure transport option can still undermine the design.
Rollouts and support
Choose the system your team can troubleshoot at 02:00. NGINX is a strong fit where operators already understand directive inheritance, reloads, enterprise authentication modules, and internal certificate tooling. Caddy is attractive where a smaller configuration surface, automatic certificate handling, and straightforward TLS modules reduce operator burden. In either case, stage changes, validate a complete handshake from a real client, and retain a rollback configuration.
Decision guide by deployment pattern
Internet-facing API requiring partner certificates
Both products fit. Use a dedicated hostname, a narrowly scoped partner CA, mandatory client validation, and application-level authorization based on the authenticated certificate identity. NGINX is preferable if the same endpoint also needs established JWT, OIDC, subrequest authentication, or detailed traffic controls. Caddy is preferable if the endpoint’s policy is principally certificate validation and a concise configuration will reduce mistakes.

Public website with a private HTTPS backend
Terminate public TLS at either proxy, then use upstream verification so the proxy validates the backend certificate. Add upstream client authentication when the backend must reject every caller that lacks a proxy-issued identity. Caddy’s transport settings are compact; NGINX’s directives make each trust and protocol decision explicit.
Two proxies across an untrusted network
Use mTLS on the inter-proxy connection, validate both sides against an internal CA, and restrict forwarded-header trust to the front proxy’s addresses. Caddy’s documented front/back pattern and optional ACME-server design can simplify this topology. NGINX is a good choice when your organization already operates certificate distribution, reload automation, and detailed policy centrally.
Legacy clients that cannot present certificates
Do not silently weaken a protected endpoint. Create a separate compatibility route with its own authentication and rate limits, or use a documented transition policy such as verified-if-present while the application distinguishes certificate-authenticated requests from legacy requests. Remove the compatibility path after migration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshooting checklist
The client receives a certificate error
- Confirm the client certificate chains to the CA configured for that virtual server.
- Check that the certificate is within its validity period and that system clocks are correct.
- Verify that the client is sending the private key matching the certificate.
- Check the selected policy: a request-only mode, a required mode, and a verified-if-present mode produce different outcomes.
The proxy cannot establish the upstream TLS session
- Confirm that the proxy’s client certificate and key are readable by the service account and form a matching pair.
- Verify that the backend CA is in the configured trust pool and that the complete chain is available.
- Set the expected server name and SNI explicitly when the connection target is an alias or address rather than the certificate name.
- Check protocol compatibility while retaining TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 unless a documented legacy requirement says otherwise.
Requests show the wrong source IP
- Inspect the complete proxy chain and the addresses allowed as trusted proxies.
- Ensure the outermost untrusted client cannot supply a forwarded address that the inner service will accept.
- Test logging, rate limiting, and authorization with both a trusted proxy request and a direct request.
CPU rises during traffic bursts
- Look for a high rate of new upstream TLS connections and failed handshakes.
- Enable or tune connection reuse where the proxy and backend support it.
- Separate certificate-validation failures from application latency so a PKI problem is not mistaken for a slow backend.
Deployment checklist
- Draw the two TLS hops and label who authenticates whom on each hop.
- Choose the smallest CA trust pool that satisfies the policy; do not use a broad root for convenience.
- Decide whether clients are required, optional, or verified only when present, and apply that decision to a dedicated endpoint where possible.
- Configure upstream certificate presentation, CA validation, hostname verification, and SNI together.
- Keep private keys outside publicly readable web roots, restrict permissions, and define a rotation owner.
- Set trusted-proxy CIDRs and forwarded-header behavior before enabling client-IP-based controls.
- Test valid, expired, wrong-CA, wrong-hostname, missing-certificate, and revoked-certificate cases.
- Monitor certificate expiry, renewal failures, handshake errors, and unexpected configuration changes.
- Document the rollback and emergency trust-removal procedure, then rehearse it before production depends on mTLS.
Verdict
NGINX is the better fit for organizations that need policy granularity, established identity integrations, and explicit control over every TLS and traffic directive. Caddy is the better fit when secure defaults, compact modules, automatic certificate workflows, and a straightforward client-auth trust pool reduce the chance of operator error. For either choice, the decisive safeguards are narrow trust stores, verified hostnames, correctly bounded proxy headers, protected private keys, and a tested certificate lifecycle.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Caddy automatically safer than NGINX because it has secure defaults?
No. Caddy’s documented defaults are secure, but a broad trust pool, incorrect server name, forged forwarded headers, exposed private key, or disabled verification can still create a vulnerability. NGINX can be equally secure when its explicit directives are configured and operated correctly.
Can I use mTLS only between the proxy and the backend?
Yes. Public clients can use ordinary server-authenticated TLS while the proxy presents a client certificate and validates the backend on the second hop. Whether that is sufficient depends on where client identity must be enforced.
What should I do instead of disabling upstream certificate verification?
Fix the configured CA trust pool, certificate chain, hostname, SNI value, or backend certificate. Disabling verification removes the protection against an impostor backend and man-in-the-middle attacks.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Which proxy is better for a team with little TLS experience?
Caddy’s compact configuration and automatic certificate workflows may reduce routine operational work. NGINX can be the safer organizational choice when the team already has mature NGINX, PKI, authentication, and reload tooling.
