There is no universal list of “the affected NGINX versions.” Exposure depends on the specific advisory, whether you run NGINX Open Source or NGINX Plus, the package revision or container digest you actually deployed, and whether the vulnerable module or feature is enabled. For example, CVE-2024-24990 applies to particular NGINX Open Source and NGINX Plus ranges only when HTTP/3/QUIC is involved. An Ubuntu or Debian package can retain an older upstream version string while already containing a vendor backport. Treat the distribution advisory, package revision, image digest, and managed-platform notice as the evidence for your installation—not a banner version alone.

What “affected NGINX version” means

NGINX security advisories are specific to a product line, release range, module, and sometimes a configuration. A scanner that reports only an upstream version can therefore produce either a false positive or a false sense of safety.

  • Product: NGINX Open Source, NGINX Plus, an ingress controller, or a platform-managed reverse proxy.
  • Build provenance: an upstream binary, an Ubuntu or Debian package, another vendor package, or a container image.
  • Exact build: the complete version and package revision, image tag and digest, or platform release.
  • Feature exposure: whether the affected module is compiled in and whether the vulnerable feature is configured.

The same base version can represent different security states when one vendor has applied a backport and another has not. Conversely, a package with a newer-looking banner can still be exposed if its vendor has not published the relevant fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Example: CVE-2024-24990 and HTTP/3/QUIC

NVD lists CVE-2024-24990 as affecting NGINX Open Source 1.25.0 before 1.25.4 when HTTP/3/QUIC is involved. For NGINX Plus, the listed affected ranges are R31 before P1 and R30 before P2 under the same HTTP/3/QUIC condition. The advisory-specific scope matters: it is not a statement that every installation of every NGINX 1.25 or R30/R31 build is vulnerable.

Product line Affected range listed for CVE-2024-24990 Configuration condition
NGINX Open Source 1.25.0 before 1.25.4 HTTP/3/QUIC is involved
NGINX Plus R31 before P1 HTTP/3/QUIC is involved
NGINX Plus R30 before P2 HTTP/3/QUIC is involved

Use the exact advisory for any other CVE. A module-specific issue may have a completely different range, and a vulnerability may require a directive or protocol that your configuration does not use. Configuration reduces exposure only when the advisory says the feature is a prerequisite; it does not replace patching.

How to determine whether your deployment is affected

Work from the running deployment, not from a package you believe should be installed. Record the evidence in a ticket or change record so that a scanner result, a rebuild, or a rollback can be traced to a specific artifact.

  1. Classify the deployment. Identify NGINX Open Source, NGINX Plus, an ingress controller, a distribution package, a vendor appliance, or a container image. A managed reverse proxy may not use the host operating system’s NGINX package at all.
  2. Capture the full identity. Record the binary version, package name and revision, enabled modules, image tag and immutable digest, base distribution, CPU architecture, or managed-platform release. For NGINX Plus, record the release and patch level, such as R31 and P1.
  3. Check the configuration. Determine whether the affected module is loaded or compiled and whether the advisory’s prerequisite feature—HTTP/3/QUIC in the CVE-2024-24990 example—is enabled for traffic.
  4. Read the exact advisory. Match your product line and complete build to the fixed versions and configuration conditions in the upstream or vendor notice. The upstream advisory index is maintained at nginx.org.
  5. Use the package or platform source of truth. For Ubuntu, Debian, or another managed distribution, consult its security tracker and changelog for the installed revision. For a hosted ingress or reverse proxy, use the platform’s security notice and release notes.
  6. Decide and document. If the artifact is in an affected range, deploy the vendor’s fixed build or move to a supported release line. If a scanner disagrees with the vendor record, preserve both findings and reconcile them before closing the issue.

How backported fixes change version checks

A backport applies a security change to a supported older distribution branch. The vendor may keep the upstream branch number in the package banner while adding a revision suffix that identifies the patched build. Therefore, seeing “1.24” or “1.28” does not, by itself, prove that the package is vulnerable or fixed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Ubuntu notice USN-8563-1, one listed fixed revision is nginx 1.28.3-2ubuntu1.7 for the supported Ubuntu release covered by that notice. The -2ubuntu1.7 suffix is security evidence: it identifies the Ubuntu package revision, not an upstream NGINX release. Compare the complete installed revision with the notice’s fixed revision and read the corresponding changelog entry.

  • Record the distribution advisory identifier, such as USN-8563-1.
  • Record the complete package revision, including the vendor suffix.
  • Confirm that the revision is installed in the running environment, not merely available in a repository.
  • Check whether the vendor fixed only a particular module or configuration path.
  • When a scanner flags the upstream CVE, reconcile the finding against the vendor’s fixed revision before escalating or forcing an upstream upgrade.

Backports are maintained for supported distribution branches. Once a distribution leaves support, its security tracker and package repository may no longer provide fixes, so an apparently familiar version string cannot be treated as current indefinitely.

Containers: choose and verify the patched image

For a container, the host’s NGINX package is usually irrelevant. The process inside the container comes from the image filesystem, and a Kubernetes ingress controller can carry its own NGINX binary. Identify the image reference and digest that are actually running before choosing an update.

Official NGINX Open Source images

The Docker Official Image provides versioned tags and base-distribution variants. It is maintained by NGINX Docker Maintainers. A tag such as an NGINX version with an Alpine or Debian variant describes the intended base, but a mutable tag can move to a new digest. Capture the manifest digest during an incident and use an explicit, reviewed tag or digest in deployment configuration.

NGINX Plus images

Official NGINX Plus images are published through a private registry with release and operating-system tags. Documented examples include r36-debian, r36-alpine, and r36-ubi. The release tag identifies the Plus line; the suffix identifies the base operating system. Access credentials and an authorized subscription are required for a private-registry pull.

Container evidence Why it matters
Image tag Shows the intended NGINX release and base variant.
Manifest digest Identifies the immutable image that was pulled.
Base distribution Determines package sources, security tracker, and runtime libraries.
Compiled NGINX version and modules Confirms what binary and feature set are actually present.
CPU architecture Ensures the inspected manifest matches the node that runs it.

Container update procedure

  1. Inspect the running workload and record its image reference, digest, architecture, base distribution, and NGINX binary version.
  2. Read the upstream, NGINX Plus, or distribution advisory and identify the first fixed image or package revision for that exact product.
  3. Pull the patched image and inspect its manifest and binary; do not assume that a rebuilt local image inherited a fixed base.
  4. Update the deployment to the reviewed tag or digest, rebuild dependent images, and run configuration and protocol tests.
  5. Roll out the new image using the platform’s normal health checks, then verify that every replica reports the expected digest.
  6. Retain the previous digest, configuration, and rollback command until the change has passed monitoring and incident review.

Pinning only a tag leaves ambiguity when the tag is mutable; pinning only a digest can hide which release line you intended. Keep both in change records and monitor the image repository for replacement digests.

Managed distributions and ingress platforms

Managed platforms often own the NGINX binary and its update schedule. Their advisory and package changelog are authoritative for that build. Updating nginx on the host will have no effect if the ingress controller runs NGINX in its own image or if the provider terminates traffic in a managed reverse-proxy tier.

Ubuntu, Debian, and similar packages

Use the distribution’s security tracker, installed package database, and changelog. Verify the revision on the machine that serves traffic, including every node in a load-balanced pool. A package listed as fixed in a repository is not evidence that all running nodes have restarted onto it.

Kubernetes ingress controllers

Identify the controller deployment, its image digest, and the NGINX version inside the pod. Update the controller release or image that contains the fixed binary. Then confirm that old pods have terminated and that new pods are serving the expected digest. If the controller bundles dynamic modules, check those modules separately against the advisory.

Hosted reverse proxies and appliances

Follow the provider’s security notice and maintenance process. Record the platform release, region or tenancy where relevant, and the provider’s stated remediation. Do not claim that an upstream version is fixed or vulnerable without evidence about the provider’s build.

NGINX Plus lifecycle: patch in place or upgrade the release line

NGINX Plus support is lifecycle-based. Its release documentation publishes three milestones for each release: end of software development, end of security updates, and end of technical support. Only the two most recent Plus releases receive critical patches and security updates.

Lifecycle position Security decision
One of the two most recent releases Apply the published security update or fixed patch level, after validating compatibility.
Older release before its end-of-security-update date Use the available supported security update while planning a move to a current release line.
Past the end-of-security-update date Do not wait for a new backport; plan a supported Plus upgrade and test configuration and modules.

Use the release page’s dates and supported operating-system list for your specific Plus release. A release can remain technically runnable after security updates end, but that operational convenience does not extend its security support.

Compare remediation options before changing production

When more than one fixed path is available, compare the operational properties rather than selecting the numerically newest version by default.

Common failure modes and fixes

A scanner flags a version that the vendor calls fixed

Compare the scanner’s product identification with the installed package name and revision. Provide the vendor advisory identifier, fixed revision, and changelog to the scanner owner. If the scanner cannot parse the suffix, request a rule update rather than replacing a supported backport with an unrelated upstream build.

The package is fixed in the repository but traffic is still vulnerable

Check whether the service was restarted and whether another node, container, or sidecar is receiving traffic. Verify the running process version, not only the package database. In a rolling deployment, inspect every replica and load-balancer target.

A new container tag was deployed but the old digest remains

Inspect the workload’s resolved image digest and node cache. Update the deployment reference, force a controlled rollout if policy permits, and confirm that all pods report the new digest. Keep the old digest available for rollback.

Updating the host did not change the ingress controller

The controller likely bundles its own NGINX binary. Patch the controller image or platform release, then verify the binary and modules inside the running pod. Host package updates protect only processes that use that host package.

HTTP/3/QUIC is disabled but the advisory still applies

Do not assume the configuration check is sufficient. Confirm the exact advisory’s prerequisites, inspect whether another listener or controller enables the feature, and apply the vendor fix when practical. Disabling a feature can be a temporary risk reduction, not a substitute for lifecycle-supported patching.

A repeatable NGINX security-update runbook

  1. Open the advisory and copy its affected ranges, fixed versions, module names, and configuration prerequisites into the change record.
  2. Inventory every NGINX instance, including standby nodes, containers, ingress controllers, and managed endpoints.
  3. Capture complete versions, package revisions, image digests, base distributions, architectures, modules, and relevant directives.
  4. Map each instance to the correct vendor source: upstream advisory, distribution tracker, Plus release documentation, image repository, or platform notice.
  5. Choose the smallest supported change that reaches a fixed build, while checking Plus lifecycle status and compatibility.
  6. Test configuration loading, TLS termination, proxy behavior, module functions, and any HTTP/3/QUIC paths that matter to the advisory.
  7. Deploy progressively, verify the running binary or image digest on every serving replica, and monitor errors, restarts, and protocol traffic.
  8. Retain rollback artifacts and close the finding only after the evidence identifies the fixed build in production.

Questions to ask when an advisory is unclear

Does an old upstream number always mean I am vulnerable?

No. A distribution may have backported the security change while retaining the upstream branch number. The package revision and vendor advisory determine the state.

Does a newer upstream number guarantee safety?

No. The relevant module, configuration prerequisite, and vendor build still have to match the advisory. Check the exact fixed range.

Which image should I pull after a CVE?

Pull the image tag or digest that the responsible publisher identifies as fixed for your NGINX product, base distribution, and architecture. For Plus, use the authorized private-registry release and OS tag; for an ingress controller, use the controller release containing the patched binary.

Is NGINX Plus still receiving security updates?

Only the two most recent Plus releases receive critical patches and security updates. Consult the release lifecycle dates for your line; if it is past its end-of-security-update date, upgrade to a supported release rather than waiting for a backport.
