The most effective NGINX RCE defense is a layered process: patch the exact installed build, remove unnecessary executable features, eliminate dangerous directive combinations, restrict who can reach sensitive locations, and confine the worker process and its files. Start by comparing your precise NGINX Open Source or NGINX Plus version with the current official security advisories; configuration changes cannot compensate for an unpatched vulnerable binary.
The version numbers and affected configurations below are time-sensitive. Recheck the advisory list whenever NGINX, OpenSSL, PCRE, njs, a dynamic module, or the operating system changes.
1. Establish the patch and exposure baseline
Do not make a generic “latest version” assumption. Record the exact package or container image, the running binary, build options, dynamic modules, and enabled protocol features. A vulnerability may require a particular module or directive combination, so the same version can have different practical exposure on two servers.

Inventory the running build
- Run
nginx -Vand save the version, compiler options, configure arguments, module paths, and linked libraries. - Run
nginx -Tas an administrator to render the complete configuration, including every included file. Protect the output because it can contain credentials, upstream names, and private paths. - List dynamic module files loaded by the configuration and package manager. Record their source, version, update owner, and whether each one is actually required.
- Mark whether HTTP/2, HTTP/3, gRPC proxying, njs, SSI, DAV, slice, charset conversion, AIO, rewrite, and regex-based
mapdirectives are active.
Compare that inventory with the current NGINX security-advisory page. The advisory ranges currently identify these 2026 fixes:

| Issue | Fixed in NGINX Open Source lines | Exposure note |
|---|---|---|
| CVE-2026-15176 | 1.31.7 and later; 1.30.6 and later | alias combined with rewrite processing and a $request_filename-based set or return condition |
| CVE-2026-95101 | 1.31.7 and later; 1.30.6 and later | Review the release-note conditions and enabled modules before relying on a version-only assessment |
| CVE-2026-97629 | 1.31.7 and later; 1.30.6 and later | Review the release-note conditions and enabled modules |
| CVE-2026-97205 | 1.31.7 and later; 1.30.6 and later | Review the release-note conditions and enabled modules |
| CVE-2026-90439 | 1.31.6 and later; 1.30.5 and later | Use the fixed maintenance release appropriate to your branch |
These are minimum fixed versions for the cited issues, not a promise that every later vulnerability is covered. NGINX Plus PLS.37.0.7.1, released October 14, 2026, is identified as a security release based on NGINX Open Source 1.29.8. For organizations that need a stable security track, NGINX Plus documentation describes LTS as a security-focused line that receives security fixes and CVE mitigations without feature changes, with support for up to three years.
Patch before changing behavior
Use your operating-system or vendor package channel, verify the package signature where available, and restart or reload only after validating the resulting configuration. If an emergency upgrade is not immediately possible, disable the affected feature or isolate the listener while you schedule the patch; do not treat a WAF rule as a substitute for a fixed binary.
2. Remove directive combinations that create RCE exposure
Audit alias, rewrite, and $request_filename
Search every location block for an alias and then inspect all rewrite, if, set, and return directives in that location and its inherited context. The CVE-2026-15176 condition involves alias with rewrite processing and a set or return that references $request_filename. Under the stated conditions, that combination can permit code execution.
Prefer a simple, unambiguous file mapping. Keep user-controlled text out of filesystem paths, avoid mixing several rewrite phases in an aliased location, and replace a complex rule with an explicit internal location or an application-level route. After each change, test requests for normal files, missing files, encoded separators, path traversal attempts, and unexpected extensions.

Review rewrite and regex captures
Inspect rewrite replacement strings that use unnamed PCRE captures such as $1 and $2, especially when multiple rewrite, if, and set operations run in sequence. NGINX release notes identify a rewrite-module heap-overflow condition with potential arbitrary code execution. Named captures and fewer rewrite phases make data flow easier to audit, but they do not remove the need to patch the binary.
Check HTTP/2 and gRPC proxy settings
For servers accepting HTTP/2 or proxying gRPC, review proxy_http_version, grpc_pass, ignore_invalid_headers, and large_client_header_buffers together. The release notes identify unsafe combinations involving acceptance of invalid headers and very large header buffers. Set buffer sizes to the smallest values compatible with known clients, reject malformed input, and test legitimate large-cookie or authorization-header cases before deployment.
Decide whether HTTP/3 is necessary
HTTP/3 adds a separate protocol implementation and its own patch stream. Track the HTTP/3 fixes in the current release line and remove HTTP/3 listeners when the service does not require them. If it is required, expose it only on intended server names and ports, patch promptly, and monitor worker exits and abnormal QUIC traffic during rollout.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsInspect regex map captures
Review every regex key in map directives and the order in which its capture variables are consumed. NGINX release notes identify heap-overflow conditions involving regex map captures. Keep maps deterministic, avoid reusing capture variables across unrelated expressions, and use literal maps where a finite set of values is sufficient.

3. Minimize executable and dynamic code
Build only what the service needs
Remove unused static modules and unload unnecessary dynamic modules. Specialized features such as SSI, DAV, slice, charset conversion, AIO, and complex rewrite logic increase the code and configuration surface; enable them only for a documented application requirement. After removing a module, test all virtual hosts that previously inherited its directives.
Third-party modules are privileged native code. Track their provenance and maintenance owner, pin versions in deployment manifests, and prevent the NGINX service account from replacing module files. A module that is loaded but rarely used still expands the attack surface.
Keep njs JavaScript opt-in
Do not configure js_import unless trusted JavaScript is deliberately part of the design. NGINX’s njs guidance states: “The only way to evaluate that code using njs is to configure the js_import directive in nginx.” It also states that “if no js_import directives are present in nginx.conf, nginx is safe from JavaScript-related vulnerabilities.” Remove unused imports, store required scripts in an administrator-controlled directory, and review every script as code with a dependency and change owner.

Make nginx.conf, included configuration, certificates, dynamic modules, and njs scripts readable by the service but writable only by administrators or deployment automation. Do not place imported scripts under an upload, cache, temporary, or application-content directory. A web compromise must not be able to modify code that NGINX will load on its next reload.

4. Restrict network reachability and identity
Expose only required listeners
Bind public listeners only to the addresses and ports that customers need. Keep status pages, administrative locations, debug endpoints, and internal health checks on a management network or a private listener. Remove default virtual hosts and unused server names so an unexpected Host header cannot select an administrative configuration.
Use TLS at both trust boundaries
Terminate client TLS with currently supported protocol and cipher settings for your NGINX branch. When traffic crosses a trust boundary to an upstream service, use TLS to the upstream as well and validate the upstream identity according to your deployment model. Encryption does not fix an RCE, but it prevents credentials and administrative requests from being exposed or modified in transit.
Require authentication for sensitive locations
Combine controls rather than relying on a hidden URL. NGINX supports HTTP Basic Authentication, IP access control, subrequest authentication, JWT, and OpenID Connect patterns. Use an IP allowlist for management networks where practical, require an identity token or login for sensitive operations, and ensure health checks cannot invoke administrative actions.
Keep proxy destinations explicit
Do not let request data choose an arbitrary upstream URL. Avoid broad resolver access from a public worker, restrict outbound egress at the host or container boundary, and maintain an allowlist of permitted upstream names and ports. These measures reduce the chance that a compromised proxy becomes an internal-network pivot or SSRF tool.

5. Enforce process and filesystem boundaries
Run workers with least privilege
Use a dedicated service account with no interactive login and only the read, bind, and log permissions NGINX needs. Keep the master or control process and deployment account separate from application data and administrative credentials. Where available, add a container or service sandbox, mandatory access controls, a read-only root filesystem, and restricted outbound networking.
Protect keys, caches, temporary files, and logs
Restrict private-key permissions and keep certificate directories outside web roots. Review ownership and mode bits on cache and temporary directories so a worker cannot overwrite configuration or module paths. Send logs to a controlled destination with rotation and access auditing.
Debug logs and core files are sensitive. NGINX warns that they may contain unsanitized requests, server configuration, and private key material. Disable debug logging and core dumps in normal operation; if incident response requires them, write them to protected storage with a defined retention and access process.

- Render the exact production configuration, including all includes and dynamically loaded modules.
- Run
nginx -twith the same prefix and configuration path used by the service. Treat warnings as deployment blockers when they affect security directives. - In a staging environment, exercise normal and malformed requests for each changed location, protocol, header size, rewrite, map, and authentication path.
- Perform a staged reload, preserve the previous package and configuration, and verify that old workers exit normally.
- Monitor error logs, worker exits, crash loops, unexpected child processes, configuration-load failures, and unusual outbound connections.
- After every NGINX, OpenSSL, PCRE, njs, dynamic-module, or operating-system update, repeat the version and directive inventory against the current advisories.
A syntax check confirms that NGINX can parse a configuration; it does not prove that a directive combination is safe. Keep a known-good rollback package and configuration so a problematic upgrade can be reversed without leaving the service exposed or offline.
Quick Recap
7. Choose a hardening plan that fits your service
| Decision axis | Lower-exposure choice | Compatibility trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Patch latency | Automated, signed updates with a staged canary | Requires release testing and rollback capacity |
| Modules and directives | Minimal build; no unused dynamic, njs, SSI, DAV, slice, AIO, or conversion modules | Some applications must redesign features or deploy them elsewhere |
| Management surfaces | Private listeners, IP restrictions, and strong authentication | Operations teams need network access and identity integration |
| Transport | TLS from client to NGINX and, where needed, from NGINX to upstreams | Certificate lifecycle and upstream trust configuration add work |
| Worker and filesystem privilege | Dedicated account, sandboxing, read-only code paths, restricted egress | Legacy applications may depend on write access or local utilities |
| Observability and rollback | Central logs, restart alerts, staged reloads, and tested rollback | Requires monitoring capacity and retained artifacts |
| HTTP/2, HTTP/3, and gRPC | Disable protocols not required; tightly test those that remain | Clients or APIs may lose protocol-specific performance or features |
Practical deployment checklist
- Record the exact NGINX version, package source, build flags, loaded modules, and enabled protocols.
- Confirm the build is at or above every applicable fixed version in the current advisory list.
- Search for
aliasplus rewrite logic and$request_filename. - Audit unnamed rewrite captures, regex
mapcaptures, invalid-header handling, and oversized header buffers. - Remove unused modules and omit
js_importunless trusted njs code is required. - Restrict listeners, management locations, upstream destinations, and outbound egress.
- Lock down configuration, modules, certificates, scripts, caches, temporary paths, logs, and core files.
- Run
nginx -ton the fully rendered production configuration before every reload. - Stage the reload, monitor worker behavior, and retain a tested rollback.
- Repeat the review after every package, library, module, or operating-system change.
