For US customers, Netflix’s practical choices are $8.99 Standard with ads, $19.99 Standard, and $26.99 Premium per month. The first two allow two simultaneous streams at up to 1080p; Premium allows four streams, 4K Ultra HD, HDR, six download devices, spatial audio, and more extra-member capacity. The cheapest plan is suitable if you can tolerate advertising and download limits. Standard is the middle option for two people who want ad-free Full HD. Premium is worthwhile only when you will use 4K/HDR, four concurrent viewers, more download devices, spatial audio, or extra members.

Netflix plans at a glance
The number of “screens” means supported devices watching at the same time, not the number of devices signed in to the account. Every plan includes Netflix games, although the ad experience and download rules differ.

What the ad-supported plan changes
How often ads appear
Netflix describes the ad experience as “a few short ads per hour.” Breaks are generally placed at natural points in a film or episode rather than at arbitrary timestamps. Ads run before and during selected shows and movies, and they cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded while a TV show or movie is playing.
Titles that are unavailable
A small number of films and series can be missing from the ad catalog because Netflix’s license does not cover advertising. Those titles display a lock icon. This is a rights limitation, not a playback error; changing video quality or reinstalling the app will not unlock them. If a particular title is essential, check its availability on the ad plan before switching.
Kids profiles, games, and live events
Netflix says ads are not currently shown on Kids profiles or in Netflix games. Live events can still include commercial breaks on any plan, so moving to an ad-free tier does not guarantee that every live broadcast will be uninterrupted.

How simultaneous viewing and household access work
Two versus four concurrent streams
Standard with ads and Standard permit two supported devices to watch at once. Premium raises that limit to four. Starting a third stream on either two-device plan can trigger a message that too many people are using the account; stopping one stream resolves the concurrency issue. The limit concerns active playback, not how many phones, tablets, TVs, or computers have the app installed.

Netflix household rule
Netflix states that an account is intended for people who live together in one household. A relative, roommate, or friend living elsewhere is not automatically covered by the screen allowance. Where Netflix and the local plan support it, someone outside the household can be added as an extra member. The current US table lists one extra-member slot with Standard and up to two with Premium; it does not list an extra-member option for Standard with ads. Eligibility and pricing vary by country.
Resolution: when you actually get 4K
Which plan includes 4K
Premium is the only plan in the current table with 4K Ultra HD and HDR. Standard with ads and Standard top out at 1080p Full HD, so subscribing to Premium is required for the plan-level 4K entitlement. Netflix calls “4K or 4K HDR” its highest currently available resolution.
Every part of the playback chain matters
A Premium subscription alone cannot force a 4K stream. Netflix says delivery also depends on the title, your internet speed, the app, the display, and all connected hardware. For example, a setup using a 4K television, a streaming stick, and an audio receiver must have 4K or HDR support in all three devices. An older stick or receiver can become the bottleneck even when the television is 4K-capable.

- Confirm that the specific film or episode is offered in 4K or HDR; not every title has the same master.
- Use a current Netflix app on a device that supports the required 4K and HDR formats.
- Check the television’s input setting, HDMI cable path, streaming player, and receiver. Any non-4K component can cause a lower-resolution output.
- Allow enough sustained bandwidth for high-quality streaming and avoid a network that repeatedly drops speed.
In practice, Premium makes 4K possible; it does not guarantee that every viewing session will display 4K. If your existing player is the weak link, a 4K-compatible streaming media player may help, but verify the rest of the chain first.

Downloads and offline viewing
Download-device allowances
The plan limit counts supported devices that hold downloaded Netflix content, not the number of individual episodes on each device. Standard with ads and Standard allow downloads on two supported devices. Premium allows six. You can therefore prepare more phones or tablets for travel with Premium, provided each device and title supports downloads.
Download quality is a separate setting
Netflix’s download-quality control is independent of the plan’s streaming-resolution label. The Standard setting uses SD and saves storage and data. High (also described as Higher in some app interfaces) can reach up to 1080p HD when the device and title support it. A high-quality download consumes substantially more storage, so select the setting before filling a device for a trip.
Special limits on Standard with ads
The ad-supported tier has a separate allowance of 15 total downloads per device per calendar month, across its two download devices. The counter resets on the first day of each month. Reaching that allowance is expected plan behavior rather than a storage fault. Netflix’s automatic “Downloads for You” feature is unavailable on ad-supported plans, so downloads there must be selected manually.
When a download will not play
- Make sure the device is one of the plan’s permitted download devices and that you have not reached the monthly ad-plan allowance.
- Connect periodically so Netflix can verify the account and title license; offline viewing is not an unlimited permanent archive.
- Check available storage and remove watched downloads before choosing High quality for new ones.
- If only one title fails, it may have a download restriction or an expired license even though other titles work.
Data use, speed, and 4K trade-offs
Netflix publishes usage of up to 3 GB per hour for HD and up to 7 GB per hour for 4K at its High data setting. Actual consumption varies with the title, device, connection, and selected quality. A household streaming 4K for two hours could therefore approach 14 GB under that guidance, before other internet activity is counted.

These figures matter on mobile hotspots and broadband plans with monthly caps. Premium’s extra resolution is valuable only if your connection can sustain it and your allowance can absorb the additional data. If a household mainly watches on phones, laptops, or a 1080p television, Standard or Standard with ads avoids paying for a resolution those screens cannot show.

Choose Standard with ads when price is the priority
This is the lowest listed monthly price. It fits one household that can accept short, unskippable breaks, needs no more than two active streams, and can live with occasional locked titles. It also supplies 1080p streaming and two download devices, but frequent travelers should account for the 15-downloads-per-device monthly ceiling.
Choose Standard for ad-free Full HD
Standard is the sensible middle tier for two concurrent viewers who want the complete ad-free catalog available to that plan and do not need 4K. Its two download devices cover a phone and tablet or two travelers. The additional monthly cost over the ad plan is primarily the removal of ads and the broader title availability, not a resolution increase.

Premium earns its higher price when at least one of its limits is a real requirement: three or four people watching at the same time, a 4K/HDR television and compatible playback chain, downloads on as many as six devices, spatial audio, or up to two eligible extra members. If none of those conditions applies, the lower tiers provide the same 1080p ceiling without paying for unused capacity.

Before changing plans: a practical checklist
- Count the maximum number of people who will watch simultaneously, rather than the total number of account users.
- Identify the best display and playback chain in the home and confirm whether it supports 4K and HDR end to end.
- Count the phones and tablets that need offline downloads, then consider whether the ad plan’s monthly download cap is workable.
- Check your broadband or mobile data allowance against Netflix’s up-to-3-GB-per-hour HD and up-to-7-GB-per-hour 4K guidance.
- Review whether everyone using the account lives in the same household or whether an eligible extra-member arrangement is needed.
- Compare the price shown at checkout in your country, including taxes and any package or add-on terms, before confirming the change.
Common problems and what they mean
A title shows a lock icon
On Standard with ads, a lock usually indicates an advertising-rights restriction. It is not evidence that your connection, device, or subscription is malfunctioning. An ad-free tier may have a broader catalog, but availability still depends on local licensing.
Premium television is not displaying 4K
Check the title’s listed quality, app and device support, internet stability, and every HDMI component between the player and screen. A non-4K streaming stick, receiver, cable path, or incompatible HDR setting can reduce output even when the television and account are eligible.
Netflix says too many devices are watching
Count active streams, not signed-in devices. End playback on an unused television, phone, or browser. If two people are already watching on Standard or Standard with ads, a third simultaneous viewer requires Premium.

Check the plan’s download-device allowance, available storage, title restrictions, and—on Standard with ads—the 15-download monthly counter. That counter resets on the first day of the next calendar month; changing the video-quality setting does not reset it.
