The Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14IRU8 is a capable everyday 2-in-1 for study, office work, browsing, streaming and occasional note-taking—but the exact configuration matters. The 360-degree hinge, 16:10 touchscreen and useful port selection are appealing; the display, memory and included pen can differ by SKU. In particular, the IPS screen tested by reviewers has limited color coverage, so check the specification for the specific listing before buying.

What the 14IRU8 is—and why the listing matters

The 14IRU8 is Lenovo’s Intel-based 14-inch IdeaPad Flex 5 generation, with 13th-generation Intel U-series processor options. Its 360-degree hinge lets it fold between laptop, tent, stand and tablet modes. Lenovo’s platform specification lists a 1920 × 1200 touchscreen in either IPS or OLED form, a 52.5Wh battery, and multiple processor, storage and input configurations. These are platform options, not a promise that every retailer’s unit has them all. Lenovo also notes that specifications and product information may change without notice; check the exact regional SKU and seller listing.

Lenovo’s IdeaPad Flex 5 14IRU8 specifications are the best starting point for confirming a configuration. Lenovo’s US product page describes the US 14-inch Intel 2-in-1 family, but the product family page alone does not establish the specification or availability of every regional SKU.

Is it good for everyday work?

Published reviews support the Flex 5 14IRU8 for common productivity and multimedia tasks. Notebookcheck’s review of an i5-1335U unit judged everyday performance capable, while Consumer Reports describes common productivity performance as adequate on its separate i5-1335U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD test configuration. Neither assessment means every CPU and memory combination performs identically.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

More demanding creative or compute work is a weaker fit. Both publications report less favorable results for tasks such as image manipulation or editing, video editing and simulations. If those workloads are central to your day, compare the exact processor and memory configuration against your software’s requirements rather than assuming the convertible form factor guarantees workstation-like performance.

Which screen should you choose?

Panel option Lenovo-listed brightness and color What to know
IPS 300 nits; 45% NTSC The IPS panel tested by Notebookcheck measured 315.6 cd/m² average maximum brightness and 58% sRGB coverage. Those results apply to its test unit, not necessarily every IPS SKU.
OLED 400 nits; 100% DCI-P3 This is a different panel option; Notebookcheck’s cited measurements were for the IPS model, not the OLED version.

For documents, browsing, streaming and general use, the IPS option may be sufficient if its color limitations are acceptable. For color-sensitive photo or design work, prioritize verifying the exact panel and its gamut: the tested IPS unit’s 58% sRGB result is a meaningful limitation. Do not infer that an item is OLED from the model family name; the retailer’s configuration details need to say so.

Consumer Reports also notes touchscreen friction and fingerprints on its tested configuration. That is worth considering if you expect to use the screen frequently in tablet mode.

How long does the battery last?

Runtime depends on the workload, panel, settings and test method. The published figures below should be read as separate results, not combined into one expected everyday battery life.

Source and test Reported runtime Qualification
Notebookcheck, Wi-Fi browsing 9 hours 48 minutes Measured in its 2023 review on an i5-1335U, Iris Xe, 52.5Wh test unit.
Consumer Reports, light web browsing 15 hours Consumer Reports result for its tested configuration; the page result does not show a publication year.
Consumer Reports, heavier 4K video playback 11.5 hours Consumer Reports result for its tested configuration; this is a different workload from light browsing.
Lenovo maximum claim, OLED Up to 9 hours MobileMark; up to 13 hours local 1080p video Manufacturer figures under the stated test types; Lenovo says actual use varies.
Lenovo maximum claim, IPS Up to 10 hours MobileMark; up to 14 hours local 1080p video Manufacturer figures under the stated test types; Lenovo says actual use varies.

Notebookcheck’s review was published on 2023-08-15. Its battery result is useful as a real test of one configuration, but it cannot guarantee runtime for a different panel, processor or workload. Lenovo’s maximum figures use manufacturer test conditions and are not directly comparable to the independent web-browsing results.

Is 8GB of RAM enough, and can you upgrade it?

For light browsing and routine office or schoolwork, 8GB may be workable, but it leaves less room for many open browser tabs, larger files and heavier multitasking than 16GB. Consumer Reports’ tested 8GB configuration was described as adequate for common productivity, not as a recommendation for every workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Notebookcheck specifically cautioned that its reviewed 8GB configuration did not have a simple path to 16GB. Treat memory as a purchase-time decision: verify the installed capacity and whether the exact SKU offers a higher-memory option. Do not assume the RAM can be upgraded later, and do not use the review’s 2023 price comparison as current pricing guidance.

Does it include a pen, and are the ports useful?

Pen inclusion depends on the configuration. Lenovo lists two digital pen options as well as a no-pen option, so confirm what is in the box before budgeting for handwritten notes or drawing. The product specification does not make pen inclusion universal.

For a thin convertible, the listed connectivity is broad: Lenovo specifies a Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 port rated up to 40Gbps with Power Delivery and DisplayPort, HDMI 1.4b, two USB-A ports, a card reader and a headset jack. There is no onboard Ethernet. These connections can reduce the need for adapters for common peripherals, though buyers planning a fixed desk setup should confirm that the exact unit and their monitor support the connection they intend to use.

What are the main drawbacks?

  • Panel quality varies. The tested IPS screen had limited color coverage; the OLED option is a different configuration and should be confirmed by name.
  • Memory needs advance checking. The reviewed 8GB configuration did not have a simple upgrade path to 16GB.
  • It is not the strongest choice for sustained creative or compute work. Published reviews report weaker performance in demanding image, video and simulation tasks than in everyday productivity.
  • Touch use has minor ergonomic trade-offs. Consumer Reports notes fingerprints and friction on the touchscreen, as well as a power button it found awkwardly placed or labeled on its unit.
  • Weight depends on materials. Lenovo’s platform figures start at 1.50kg for metal models and 1.55kg for plastic models; the exact unit may differ.

How to judge a specific listing

  1. Confirm the full model and region. Make sure the listing identifies the IdeaPad Flex 5 14IRU8, not just a similarly named Flex 5 family model.
  2. Read the panel specification. Look for IPS or OLED, resolution, brightness and color coverage; do not assume OLED is standard.
  3. Check memory and processor together. Confirm the RAM capacity and exact CPU, and choose for your real multitasking and workload needs.
  4. Verify storage and included accessories. Confirm SSD capacity and whether a digital pen is included.
  5. Check current price, stock and warranty for your region. The cited specification and review pages do not establish current retail price or availability for a particular SKU.

Verdict

The IdeaPad Flex 5 14IRU8 is worth considering as an everyday convertible when the configuration is clearly specified and priced appropriately for its screen, RAM, processor and storage. Its flexible hinge, practical ports and published battery results suit general productivity and media use. The strongest reasons to pause are the limited color coverage of the reviewed IPS panel, uncertainty around RAM upgrades on an 8GB unit, and weaker evidence for demanding creative work. Buy the exact configuration—not just the family name.
