Deadlock is not publicly downloadable yet. Valve’s Steam listing says the game is in early development, is not yet available on Steam, and currently admits players only through friend invites from existing playtesters. The page carries a “Free to Play” user-defined tag, but Valve has not confirmed a final public price or monetization model.

For hardware, the only published baseline is a 64-bit processor and 64-bit operating system. Valve still lists the operating-system version, processor model, graphics hardware, sound card, memory, storage and performance targets as unresolved or unspecified. Steam Deck compatibility is marked Unknown.

Deadlock’s current status at a glance

The most reliable source for access and requirements is Valve’s live Deadlock Steam listing. It describes a multiplayer game in early development with temporary art and experimental gameplay. The same page says public availability is not open, the release date is “To be announced,” and the game is not yet available on Steam.

Question What Valve currently states What that means for you
Can anyone download it? Access is limited to friend invites through playtesters. You cannot install it through a normal public Steam download unless you receive an invitation through the current test.
Is it free? The store page has a “Free to Play” user-defined tag. That tag is not a confirmation of the final launch price or monetization system.
When will it launch? Release timing is listed as “To be announced.” There is no announced public release date to plan around.
What PC is required? A 64-bit processor and operating system are the only concrete minimum and recommended entries. A 64-bit computer is necessary, but the information is not enough to predict playability or frame rate.
Will it run on Steam Deck? Steam compatibility is marked “Unknown.” Do not treat Deck support or performance as verified.

Valve’s Steam Support entry for Deadlock reproduces the same unresolved requirement fields. These are current listings, not promises about what the finished game will require.

Can you download Deadlock without an invite?

Access is currently playtester-invite only

Valve’s access notice says invitations come from friends who are already playtesters. The listing does not provide an open download button or a public registration route. In practical terms, an interested player must already be connected to someone with access and receive an invitation through Valve’s current testing arrangement.

An invite-limited test is different from a public free-to-play launch. A test participant may be able to play without paying, but that does not establish that every Steam user can join, that access will remain open, or that the eventual release will use the same rules.

The Steam page is not a public release page

The page explicitly says, “This game is not yet available on Steam.” You may be able to view the store page, follow announcements or see community discussion, but those actions do not create installation rights. Be wary of websites or downloads claiming to bypass the invitation system; they are not part of the access method Valve describes.

Does the “Free to Play” tag confirm the final price?

No. “Free to Play” appears among Steam’s user-defined tags, while the same listing says the game is still unavailable publicly and gives no final price or monetization terms. A user-defined tag can describe how people currently perceive or access a test; it is not an announced commercial policy.

The accurate answer today is therefore conditional: an invited tester may access the current playtest without a stated purchase price, but Valve has not confirmed whether the finished game will be free to download, whether it will sell optional items, or whether any other payment model will apply. Do not budget for a specific launch price until Valve publishes one.

What PC requirements has Valve actually published?

Valve’s minimum and recommended sections each specify only a 64-bit processor and operating system. The listing leaves the operating-system version, processor model, graphics hardware and sound-card fields as “Not stated.” It does not publish a memory requirement, storage footprint, supported graphics API, display target or expected frame rate.

How to check whether your computer is 64-bit

Checking architecture is useful as a first screen, not as a compatibility guarantee. The menus below identify your system’s architecture while Valve’s detailed requirements remain unpublished.

Windows

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System, then About.
  3. Read System type. A 64-bit operating system and an x64-based processor indicate that you meet the architecture baseline shown on Valve’s page.

If the entry says a 32-bit operating system, the machine does not meet the stated 64-bit operating-system requirement. A 64-bit result still tells you nothing about the missing GPU, CPU-generation, RAM or storage requirements.

Linux

  1. Open a terminal.
  2. Run uname -m.
  3. An output such as x86_64 identifies a 64-bit x86 environment. Other architecture labels may also be 64-bit, but Deadlock’s supported operating systems and processor models have not been published.

macOS

  1. Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac.
  2. Note whether the Mac uses an Intel processor or Apple silicon.
  3. Treat this only as an architecture check. Valve has not named a macOS version or confirmed macOS support in the Deadlock requirement fields.

Why the missing CPU and GPU numbers matter

A 64-bit label describes how software addresses memory; it does not measure gaming performance. Two 64-bit computers can differ dramatically in graphics capability, processor throughput, cooling, drivers and available memory. Without a GPU model, CPU model and target frame rate, there is no defensible way to predict whether a laptop’s integrated graphics, an older desktop card or a new gaming system will be suitable.

The same uncertainty applies to RAM and storage. Valve has not stated how much memory the game needs or how large the installation will be. Buying components solely on community guesses could leave you with an expensive upgrade that does not address the eventual bottleneck. Wait for Valve to replace the unspecified entries with named specifications before treating a purchase as a Deadlock upgrade.

Is Deadlock compatible with Steam Deck or other handheld PCs?

Steam currently marks Deadlock’s Steam Deck compatibility as Unknown. That is a neutral status, not a “Playable” or “Verified” result. It means Valve has not provided a compatibility classification that establishes controls, display behavior, anti-cheat operation, performance or battery expectations.

The same caution applies to other handheld PCs. A handheld may use a 64-bit processor and operating system yet still differ in graphics drivers, power limits, input mapping and supported software. Until Valve publishes requirements or a compatibility rating, do not buy a handheld specifically for Deadlock on the assumption that it will work.

What recent development reporting indicates

A 30 September 2026 report by PC Gamer said Valve’s development update did not signal an imminent public release. The report described more work on the game’s core before later polish phases. That context explains why the store page still carries temporary-development language and incomplete requirements, but it is not a release-date announcement.

The report reproduced Valve’s explanation for putting the multiplayer game in players’ hands early: “We think building a multiplayer game is very hard and risky, and the best way to minimize that risk is to make sure that we are able to have it in players’ hands from an early state to help us shape it and tell us what is fun and what isn’t.” The statement describes a development philosophy, not a promise that public access or a final price is imminent.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling Deadlock confirmed free-to-play at launch. The page’s user-defined tag does not establish final pricing.
  • Promising a public download. Current access is restricted to friend invites through playtesters.
  • Inventing minimums. Valve has not supplied RAM, storage, GPU, CPU-model or operating-system-version figures.
  • Treating 64-bit as a performance requirement. It is an architecture baseline, not a frame-rate guarantee.
  • Calling Steam Deck supported. Compatibility is listed as Unknown.
  • Using another game’s requirements as a substitute. Similar genres or engines do not establish Deadlock’s eventual needs.
  • Buying hardware on rumors. Wait for named specifications and a performance target from Valve.

What to do if you want to play

  1. Check the official Steam listing for changes to access language, requirements and release timing.
  2. If you know an existing playtester, ask whether they can send an invitation through the current system. Do not assume a third-party key or download is legitimate.
  3. Confirm that your computer is 64-bit, recognizing that this is only the published baseline.
  4. Record your CPU, GPU, RAM and available storage so you can compare them when Valve posts concrete specifications.
  5. Do not purchase a PC or handheld solely for Deadlock while the processor, graphics, memory and operating-system fields remain unspecified.

The practical answer

Deadlock is currently an invite-limited early-development test, not a publicly downloadable game. Its Steam “Free to Play” tag should not be read as confirmation of the final release price. Valve has announced neither a public launch date nor final monetization terms.

The only official computer baseline is a 64-bit processor and operating system. Since the OS version, CPU, GPU, sound, RAM and storage details are still missing—and Steam Deck is marked Unknown—no honest source can yet tell you whether a particular PC or handheld will run Deadlock. Verify your architecture, follow Valve’s listing for updates, and make hardware decisions only after the unspecified fields become concrete.
