For an enterprise carbon-accounting shortlist, compare the quality and traceability of the data each platform can handle—not just its emissions calculations or AI label. Test Scope 3 supplier workflows, calculation methods, audit trails, reporting outputs, and what each AI feature actually does. Watershed, Persefoni, IBM Envizi, and Microsoft Sustainability Manager have product information supporting a useful first-pass review, but the available evidence does not verify an exact set of seven platforms or establish a fair seven-way feature comparison.
How to compare enterprise carbon accounting software
Carbon accounting platforms take operational and value-chain activity data and turn it into greenhouse-gas inventories and reporting. For large organizations, that means the data pipelines, organizational model, controls, and reporting fit can matter as much as the calculation engine.
Use a consistent demonstration script for every vendor. Bring representative examples from your own organization—such as utility bills, procurement records, travel data, and supplier submissions—and ask the vendor to show how they move through the system. Distinguish what the product does today from what is configurable, service-led, or planned.

| Evaluation area | What to ask for in a demo |
|---|---|
| Data acquisition and quality | Which ERP, utility, metering, travel, procurement, and supplier sources can be ingested? Show validation, completeness checks, correction history, and how source records link to reported figures. |
| Scope 3 and product emissions | Which of the 15 Scope 3 categories are supported? Show how spend-based estimates are distinguished from supplier-specific or product-level data, and let reviewers inspect assumptions and factor provenance. |
| Methods and auditability | Which standards and calculation methods are used? Can the system preserve emissions factors and versions, organizational boundaries, calculations, and reviewer approvals for assurance? |
| AI scope and controls | Which tasks use AI? Are outputs suggestions or applied changes? What data informs them, how can a user review the result, and how is the decision recorded? |
| Reporting and regulation | Which jurisdiction-specific disclosure frameworks and templates are supported now? Show required inputs, exports, and how the product handles changes to reporting requirements. |
| Decarbonization and supplier engagement | Can teams set targets, model scenarios, track initiatives, and collect supplier data? Show how inventory results connect to actions and follow-up. |
| Enterprise fit and cost | Test organization hierarchy, permissions, integrations, data volumes, security and residency requirements, implementation services, and the pricing basis. |
These checks align with the 2026 Verdantix Green Quadrant assessment framework, which assigns 15% each to data acquisition and data management and considers acquisition for Scope 1, Scope 2, Scope 3, and product emissions. Those are weights in Verdantix’s assessment, not estimates of a buyer’s implementation effort or cost.

What the documented platforms say they offer
The descriptions below are vendor or product-documentation claims, not independent validation or a ranked comparison. Confirm current packaging and availability with each vendor, then test the workflow against your own inventory.
Watershed
Watershed describes purpose-built AI agents for cleaning, formatting, and analyzing data, along with tools to draft reports using peer benchmarks and climate databases. The company says built-in human review and transparent calculations help keep users in control. It also says it has methods for all 15 Scope 3 categories. Ask to see the source data, calculation steps, reviewer controls, and category-specific methods for your own use cases rather than treating broad coverage claims as equivalent to supplier-specific data.
Rank #2
Watershed reports that the 2026 Verdantix Green Quadrant found it strongest on capabilities and momentum among 21 assessed solutions and that it led on capabilities for a second consecutive year. This is Watershed’s summary of the analyst report, not a neutral ranking statement from an independent comparison presented here; treat it accordingly when weighing the vendor’s position.
Persefoni
Persefoni describes a platform for Scope 1, 2, and 3 footprints and regulatory reporting. Its materials describe Persefoni Copilot as a GPT-style interface for technical carbon-accounting questions, anomaly detection for data such as electricity consumption, standards-aligned calculation methods, and supplier engagement for Scope 3.
Rank #3
- Intuitive interface of a conventional FTP client
- Easy and Reliable FTP Site Maintenance.
- FTP Automation and Synchronization
Persefoni also describes natural-language emission-factor mapping from spend files, but labels that capability “Coming Soon.” Do not include it in a current-state evaluation unless the vendor confirms it is generally available to your organization and demonstrates it in your intended configuration.
IBM Envizi
IBM describes Envizi as AI-assisted sustainability data management with configurable organization modeling across regions, sites, assets, product lines, and joint ventures. Its product materials also describe automated data-health checks, logged audit trails, and high-volume supplier-level transaction data intended to improve Scope 3 accounting.
Rank #4
IBM describes Scope 1, 2, and 3 accounting aligned with the GHG Protocol. It says the product can be used as a managed platform, through supported Excel calculations, or through emissions logic exposed via an API. In a demo, clarify which option fits your systems, who maintains calculation logic, and whether the audit trail captures the records and approvals your assurance process requires.

IBM says Envizi pricing is based on managed data volume, with exact requirements scoped during sales; no public price is stated in the product information summarized here. Ask for a quote tied to your anticipated data volume, entities, integrations, implementation services, and support needs instead of assuming a standard price tier.
Best Value
IBM publishes customer-specific outcomes, including more than 15,000 unique data types tracked by Ikano Group for CSRD reporting and a 45% reduction in Downer Group’s Scope 3 data categorization error rate, which IBM attributes to AI. These are IBM case-study claims about those named customers, not expected results or independently validated benchmarks for other organizations.
Microsoft Sustainability Manager
Microsoft Learn describes Sustainability Manager as a SaaS solution built on Power Platform for managing environmental impacts across operations and the value chain. Its documentation describes calculations for Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions across GHG Protocol categories, goal management, what-if analysis, and disclosure reporting across named frameworks. It also describes AI and Copilot capabilities within Microsoft for Sustainability.
Microsoft’s reference architecture documentation was last updated February 17, 2026. Treat that date as the currency of that document, not proof that every feature, framework template, or licensing option is available in your geography or product package. Confirm licensing, current packaging, supported templates, and implementation requirements directly with Microsoft.

The 2026 Verdantix Green Quadrant reprint lists 21 suppliers and product solutions assessed, including IBM Envizi ESG Suite, Persefoni, Salesforce Agentforce Net Zero, SAP Sustainability Control Tower and related SAP products, Sphera Operational Intelligence, Watershed, Sweep, and Workiva Carbon. The report says its supplier list draws on Verdantix analysis and vendor questionnaires. Inclusion means a solution was assessed; it does not show that every listed product has equivalent AI functionality or suits a particular enterprise.
The product information summarized here supports a more detailed description of Watershed, Persefoni, IBM Envizi, and Microsoft Sustainability Manager. It does not establish current detailed capabilities for Salesforce Agentforce Net Zero, SAP’s sustainability products, or Sphera, nor does it confirm that those are the exact seven entries intended by a seven-platform headline. Treat any seven-name list as a candidate set to verify, not as a validated ranking or complete comparison.
Quick Recap
What to ask before you select a platform
- Can you trace a reported number? Start with a sample emissions figure and follow it back to the source activity record, organizational boundary, factor source and version, calculation, correction history, and reviewer approval.
- What data is behind Scope 3 coverage? Ask for category-level coverage and examples that separate spend-based estimates from supplier-specific or product-level data. Check how missing data and assumptions are identified.
- What does the AI change? For each AI function, ask what inputs it uses, whether it proposes or applies edits, how a human reviews the output, and how the final decision is logged. Confirm whether the named feature is available now.
- Can it produce your required disclosure? Have the vendor show the specific framework, jurisdiction, template, export, and supporting data your reporting team needs. Confirm whether any part depends on configuration or services.
- Will it fit your operating model? Validate entity hierarchies, permissions, integrations, data residency and security needs, implementation roles, and contract structure with IT, finance, procurement, and sustainability stakeholders.
- What is the full cost to operate? Ask what drives subscription charges and what is additional, including data-volume changes, integrations, implementation, support, and ongoing administration. IBM’s data-volume-based pricing statement applies to Envizi; it should not be generalized to other platforms.
