There is no Fujifilm support documentation confirming a camera called “Instax Square 3.” The documented Fujifilm camera is the instax SQUARE SQ1. A separate October 14, 2026 report describes an Instax Square 2 with built-in warm and cool filters. Check the label on your camera before following model-specific instructions. The loading, shooting, film-handling, and development procedure below is for the SQ1 unless a section explicitly identifies another model.
Identify the camera before loading film
Look at the name printed on the front, lens ring, or battery compartment. Do not assume that “Square 3” is the model name: the official support material available for Fujifilm documents the instax SQUARE SQ1, while the newer model described in the October 14, 2026 report is called Square 2.
| Camera label | What is established | Filter guidance |
|---|---|---|
| instax SQUARE SQ1 | Documented Fujifilm loading and shooting procedure; uses FUJIFILM instax SQUARE instant film. | Do not expect built-in color filters. Use a compatible cartridge-mounted effects filter if desired. |
| Instax Square 2 | A contemporaneous October 14, 2026 report describes a separate model. | Reportedly has a switch for warm and cool filters; verify the controls on your own camera. |
| “Instax Square 3” | Not verified in the official support result used for these instructions. | Identify the actual model before using any control-specific advice. |
If the controls, lens ring, or film door on your camera do not match the SQ1 description, stop and use the manual for the exact model. Film compatibility may be shared across SQUARE cameras, but controls and filter hardware are not automatically interchangeable.
Use the correct film
The SQ1 takes FUJIFILM instax SQUARE instant film. The square format is not the same as mini or WIDE film, so match the cartridge name and format before opening the package.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Overall print size: 86 × 72 mm.
- Image area: 62 × 62 mm.
- Keep the cartridge in its foil until you are ready to load it.
- Store film in a cool, dry place.
Do not substitute a different instax format simply because its cartridge looks similar. The camera’s film chamber and ejection path are designed for the SQUARE cartridge.
How to load instax SQUARE film in the SQ1
Load film indoors or in another place where you can work without rushing. The cartridge contains light-sensitive sheets; once the door is closed, leave it closed until the pack is finished.
- Remove the cartridge from its foil only when ready. Keep the cartridge out of direct light while you prepare the camera.
- Open the rear film door. Do not force the latch or insert the cartridge at an angle.
- Match the yellow stripe. Align the yellow stripe on the cartridge with the matching yellow mark inside the film chamber.
- Insert the cartridge straight into the chamber. It should seat without force. If it does not, remove it and recheck the yellow-mark alignment rather than pressing harder.
- Close the film door completely. Confirm that it is latched before turning the lens ring on.
- Keep the door closed until all exposures are used. The counter begins at 10 and counts down to 0.
The back-cover warning is literal: “Do not open the back cover until you have used up the film. Otherwise, the rest of the film will become exposed and turn white, and can no longer be used.” Opening a loaded door can expose the remaining sheets and reset the exposure counter. If you accidentally opened it, treat the remaining film as potentially unusable rather than repeatedly opening the door to inspect it.

Take a standard photo
- Turn the lens ring to ON. The lens barrel extends.
- Wait for the flash-charging lamp. It blinks while charging and then lights when the camera is ready. The shutter cannot be pressed while the flash is charging.
- Hold the camera securely and look through the viewfinder. Compose the subject before pressing the shutter.
- Press the shutter button once. Keep fingers, the strap, the flash, the sensors, the lens, and the ejection slot clear.
- Wait for the ejection sound to stop. Take the print by its edge after the camera has finished ejecting it.
- Turn the lens ring to OFF when finished.
The counter shows how many exposures remain: it starts at “10” with a fresh pack and reaches “0” after the last exposure. The counter is not a development timer; the print still needs time to develop after it exits.
Use the SQ1 selfie mode
For a self-portrait or a close subject, rotate the lens ring to SELFIE and pull out the lens as directed by the camera. Use the small selfie mirror beside the lens to check your composition. Keep the subject approximately 30–50 cm from the lens.
- Keep your fingers away from the flash, sensors, lens, and ejection slot.
- Use the mirror to center faces rather than relying only on the viewfinder.
- Wait for the flash-charging lamp to indicate readiness before pressing the shutter.
These instructions describe the documented SQ1 selfie mode. A different SQUARE model may use different distances, modes, or lens controls, so confirm the label first.

Choosing and using filters
Built-in filters are not documented for the SQ1
The SQ1 manual and official support material do not document a built-in warm, cool, or other color-filter control. Do not assign a filter switch from another camera to the SQ1. If your camera body has a physical filter selector, verify that it is actually the Square 2 or another model before using it.
Square 2 warm and cool filters
The October 14, 2026 report describes the separate Square 2 as having a switch that places filters in front of the lens. In that report, the warm setting adds a subtle golden tone and the cool setting produces a crisper, blue-toned look. Those characteristics should not be treated as SQ1 features. Check the markings and instructions on your own Square 2 before shooting.
Cartridge-mounted effects filters for SQUARE film
For an SQ1 or another camera that accepts SQUARE cartridges, an optional third-party accessory is the KONO No.1 Effects Filters for FUJIFILM INSTAX SQUARE (3-Pack). The pack contains Austin, Raindrops, and Northern Lights effects and is designed to attach to SQUARE film cartridges.

This is an accessory applied to the film cartridge, not a replacement for instax SQUARE film and not a feature built into the SQ1. Confirm that the package specifically says INSTAX SQUARE, attach it according to the accessory’s instructions, and make sure it does not interfere with the cartridge seating, film door, or ejection path. Remove or replace the effect when you want an unfiltered frame.
Let each print develop correctly
After the camera ejects a print, development begins automatically and takes approximately 90 seconds. Hold the picture by its edge and leave it flat while the image appears.
- Do not bend or crease the print.
- Do not shake it; shaking does not make it develop faster and can damage the image.
- In temperatures below 5°C (41°F), keep the ejected photo warm to help it develop properly.
The square image area is 62 × 62 mm inside the larger 86 × 72 mm print, so allow the full border to remain supported when placing it on a surface. Do not put a developing print back into the camera or reopen the film door to check the remaining sheets.

Store and transport film safely
Before loading
Keep unused cartridges sealed in their foil and store them in a cool, dry place. Open the foil only when the camera is ready to accept the cartridge.
When flying
Fujifilm recommends carrying both loaded film and unused film in carry-on baggage rather than checked luggage to reduce the risk of X-ray fogging. Keep the cartridge protected from heat, moisture, and unnecessary exposure while traveling.
After loading
Once a cartridge is in the camera, leave the film door shut until the counter reaches 0. A fresh cartridge is not recoverable simply by closing the door again after exposure to light.
Why an Instax SQUARE photo comes out white
| What you see | Likely cause supported by the instructions | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Several or all remaining sheets are white | The rear film door was opened after loading, exposing the light-sensitive film. | Do not keep opening the door. Finish the pack if the camera still ejects sheets, but expect exposed sheets to be unusable. |
| The camera will not take the picture immediately | The flash is still charging. | Wait until the charging lamp stops blinking and lights steadily. |
| The print is damaged or does not develop normally in cold weather | The photo was bent, creased, shaken, or left below 5°C/41°F. | Handle by the edge, keep it flat, and keep it warm in cold conditions. |
| The cartridge does not seat easily | The yellow stripe is not aligned with the yellow mark in the chamber. | Remove it and realign the marks; never force the cartridge. |
| The subject or photo is partly blocked | A finger or strap covered the flash, sensor, lens, or ejection slot. | Reposition your hands and strap before the next exposure. |
A reliable shooting checklist
- Confirm the camera label: SQ1, Square 2, or another model—not an assumed “Square 3.”
- Use FUJIFILM instax SQUARE film.
- Match the cartridge’s yellow stripe to the yellow mark in the chamber.
- Close the film door and leave it closed until the pack is empty.
- Turn the lens ring to ON and wait for the flash lamp.
- Keep the flash, sensors, lens, and ejection slot unobstructed.
- Press the shutter only after framing through the viewfinder.
- Wait for the ejection sound to stop before taking the print.
- Handle the print by its edge for about 90 seconds while it develops.
- Turn the lens ring to OFF when the session is over.
What to verify on a newer SQUARE camera
If your camera is not the SQ1, compare the physical controls and manual before applying these steps. The important differences to verify are:
Quick Recap
| Feature to check | Why it matters | Information established here |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in filter controls | A lens-ring or switch operation may belong to Square 2 rather than SQ1. | Square 2 is reported with warm and cool filters; SQ1 built-in filters are not documented. |
| Shooting modes | Standard, close-up, landscape, and selfie controls can vary by model. | SQ1 SELFIE mode and its 30–50 cm distance are documented. |
| Battery type | Battery access and replacement instructions are model-specific. | Not stated for the models covered here. |
| Film-counter and door design | Opening the wrong panel can expose the pack or change the counter. | SQ1 starts at 10 and reaches 0; its loaded rear door must remain closed. |
| Supported SQUARE film variants | Not every accessory or cartridge is guaranteed for every newer body. | FUJIFILM instax SQUARE film is the documented SQ1 film. |
