Android: open Settings → Network & internet (or Wi‑Fi & Internet) → Advanced → Private DNS, choose Private DNS provider hostname, enter dns.adguard-dns.com, and tap Save. On iPhone, install and enable a DNS configuration profile or the filtering provider’s app; iOS normally does not offer an Android-style hostname box.
DNS ad blocking works by stopping your device from resolving domains that appear on an ad, tracker, malware, or other selected blocklist. It can remove many third-party requests across browsers and apps, but it cannot reliably eliminate every ad—especially ads served from the same hostname as wanted content, or ads delivered without a separate DNS request. The encrypted DNS connection also protects DNS lookups in transit; it does not make every part of your browsing anonymous.
What private DNS ad blocking does
Every time an app or website needs to contact a hostname, such as an analytics, advertising, or content server, the device normally asks a DNS resolver for that hostname’s IP address. A filtering DNS service checks the request against its lists before answering. If the domain is listed, the resolver returns a blocking response instead of the destination address, so the connection cannot start.
On Android, the built-in Private DNS setting uses DNS-over-TLS (DoT). The DNS query is encrypted between the phone and a compatible resolver, rather than sent as readable DNS traffic on the local network. This is transport encryption for DNS only: the resolver can still see the queries it handles, and the rest of an HTTPS session is governed by HTTPS and the app or browser’s own privacy controls.

Filtering is determined by the provider, its selected lists, and any rules you add. A general server can block advertising and tracking domains; a family server may also block adult domains and enable Safe Search or Safe Mode where the service supports those controls. A non-filtering server provides encrypted DNS without ad blocking.
Before you change the setting
- Make sure the phone is already online through Wi‑Fi or mobile data. A hostname cannot be validated if the device has no working connection.
- Copy the provider hostname exactly. It is a DNS-over-TLS name, not a numeric IP address and not a web address beginning with
https://. - Decide whether you want a fixed public policy or an account-managed service. A public hostname is quick to install; an account-based service may offer custom blocklists, allowlists, user rules, and query logs.
- Know how to undo the change. On Android you can return Private DNS to Automatic. On iPhone you can disable or remove the installed profile in Settings → General → VPN & Device Management (the exact wording can vary by iOS release).
- Keep another way to reach support or documentation available. A badly configured resolver can make websites and apps appear offline even though the network itself is working.
Set up ad-blocking Private DNS on Android
Use the built-in Private DNS menu
- Open Settings.
- Open Network & internet or Wi‑Fi & Internet. The label depends on the phone maker and Android release.
- Tap Advanced, then Private DNS. If you cannot see it, use the Settings search field and search for Private DNS.
- Select Private DNS provider hostname.
- Enter the filtering provider’s hostname. For the standard public AdGuard DNS server, type
dns.adguard-dns.com. Do not add spaces, quotation marks, a protocol, or a trailing slash. - Tap Save.
After saving, open a few sites and apps that you use regularly. A page that loads without its usual advertising domains, or an app that displays fewer trackers in its own diagnostics, indicates that filtering is active; the exact result depends on the provider’s lists and the content being requested.
Use a personal server hostname when you need account controls
Some providers issue a device-specific hostname tied to your account and policy. In the AdGuard DNS format documented for personal servers, the hostname is {Your_Device_ID}.d.adguard-dns.com. Replace the text inside the braces with the device identifier supplied in your account; do not type the braces themselves unless the provider explicitly includes them as part of the identifier. A personal hostname can apply your own blocklists, allowlists, and rules instead of the public server’s fixed policy.

What Android’s Automatic mode means
Automatic is not the same as an ad-blocking server. Android uses the network-provided DNS settings in this mode. On Android P (Android 9), the system attempts to use DNS-over-TLS on port 853 when the network resolver supports it, then can fall back to ordinary UDP DNS on port 53. Automatic mode therefore does not guarantee filtering or encrypted DNS on every network. Selecting a provider hostname explicitly tells Android which DoT resolver to use.

Android troubleshooting
The hostname is rejected
- Check every character, including hyphens and periods. The public example is
dns.adguard-dns.com. - Remove spaces before or after the hostname.
- Confirm that you entered only a hostname, not an IP address, URL, or port suffix.
- Verify that Wi‑Fi or mobile data can load a normal webpage before trying again.
- Search Settings for Private DNS if the menu path in your phone’s manual differs.
The phone loses internet access after saving
- Return to Settings → Network & internet (or Wi‑Fi & Internet) → Advanced → Private DNS.
- Select Automatic and save.
- Test the same network again. If it works, the issue is with the hostname, resolver reachability, or a network that blocks encrypted DNS.
- Try another compatible filtering hostname or another network. A hotel, school, workplace, or captive-portal Wi‑Fi may require its sign-in page before private DNS can operate normally.
- If the connection works only with Automatic, use the provider’s app or profile flow if one is available, or leave filtering disabled on that network.
A website or app breaks
DNS filtering can block a domain that an app needs for sign-in, payments, video playback, comments, telemetry, or other functions. First switch Private DNS to Automatic to confirm the cause. If the app works again, add the necessary domain to the provider’s allowlist or user rules, if your service supports them. Allow only the specific domain you need; disabling every filter removes the protection that caused the problem.
Set up DNS ad blocking on an iPhone
Install a DNS configuration profile
iOS normally delivers system-wide custom DNS through a configuration profile or a provider application rather than an Android-style Private DNS hostname field. The provider’s public DNS page should offer a generic profile for the server you select.
- Open the provider’s DNS setup page in Safari.
- Choose the server policy you want. A default filtering server blocks ads and trackers; a non-filtering server does not apply those lists; a family-protection server can additionally block adult content and enable Safe Search or Safe Mode where possible.
- Tap Download configuration profile (the wording can vary slightly).
- When iOS reports that a profile was downloaded, open Settings. Tap Profile Downloaded if that item appears, or go to General → VPN & Device Management.
- Select the downloaded profile and review the provider name, DNS servers, and policy before installing it. Do not install a profile whose publisher or contents you cannot identify.
- Tap Install, authenticate with the device passcode if requested, and approve the remaining warnings.
- Return to General → VPN & Device Management and verify that the profile is listed and enabled.
The profile applies DNS settings at the device level while it remains installed and active. iOS approval screens and labels can change between releases, so use the provider name and the profile details—not just the button position—to confirm what you are installing.

If the provider offers a profile constructor, use it to select the server, filtering categories, and any account-specific policy, then download the generated profile. Review the resulting provider name and settings in iOS before installation. A custom profile is useful when you need a personal allowlist or a family policy that the generic public profile does not include.

Use the provider’s iPhone app
Some DNS services distribute their configuration through an app. The app may install a profile, establish a managed VPN-style DNS configuration, or provide an on-device switch. Follow the app’s setup instructions and check Settings → General → VPN & Device Management afterward so you know which configuration is active. Installing multiple DNS profiles or DNS-filtering apps can create conflicts; keep one active policy unless you understand how the app manages precedence.
Disable or remove the profile
- Open Settings → General → VPN & Device Management.
- Tap the DNS profile or provider configuration.
- Choose Remove Profile (or the equivalent option), authenticate, and confirm.
- Reopen a browser and an app to verify that normal DNS behavior has returned.
Removing the profile is different from merely closing Safari. The device-wide DNS policy remains in effect until you disable or remove the configuration.
Choosing a filtering policy
| Policy type | What it is intended to block | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Default filtering | Advertising and tracking domains | General use when you want fewer ads and less third-party tracking |
| Non-filtering | No ad or tracker blocklists | Troubleshooting, compatibility testing, or encrypted DNS without filtering |
| Family protection | Ads and trackers plus adult-content categories; Safe Search or Safe Mode where supported | A device used by children or a household that wants an additional content policy |
| Account-managed or personal | The categories, lists, and rules selected in your account | Users who need custom blocklists, allowlists, device policies, or logs |
Filtering scope is not universal. Two providers can block different domains, and the same provider can change its lists. Check the provider’s current privacy policy and logging explanation separately; encrypted DNS does not establish a universal “no logs” guarantee.
Custom filters, allowlists, and rules
A filtering service can combine its DNS server, selected DNS filters, and user rules. This lets you adjust the policy when a useful service is incorrectly blocked or when a known tracker is not on the default lists.

Block a domain without blocking a subdomain
Rule syntax is provider-specific. In the AdGuard filtering syntax example, a rule can block example.org while leaving www.example.org allowed. Follow the provider’s syntax documentation exactly; a rule that matches every subdomain can have a much wider effect than one that matches the base hostname.
Allow a broken service carefully
- Reproduce the problem with filtering enabled.
- Temporarily switch to the provider’s non-filtering server or disable the profile to confirm that DNS filtering is responsible.
- Identify the smallest domain required for the feature, using the provider’s query log or the app’s documented endpoints when available.
- Add that domain to an allowlist, save the rule, and test sign-in, playback, checkout, or the affected feature again.
- Remove the exception if it is no longer needed.
Allowlisting a broad advertising or analytics domain may restore an app but also permits the requests you wanted to block. Prefer a narrow exception and test it on the specific device.
What DNS ad blocking can and cannot block
Usually effective against
- Many third-party advertising hostnames requested by websites and apps.
- Common tracking and analytics domains that appear on the selected lists.
- Known malware or phishing domains included by the provider.
- Some domains in family-protection categories, such as adult-content sites.
Not guaranteed to remove
- Ads served from the same hostname as the article, video, or app content you requested.
- First-party promotions that use the service’s own domain.
- Ads delivered inside an encrypted payload without a separately blockable DNS hostname.
- Every ad in a streaming service, social network, game, or mobile app.
- Visual space left behind after a blocked request, because DNS filtering does not edit the page layout.
Browsers and app-level blockers can use additional techniques, such as inspecting page resources or applying cosmetic rules. DNS filtering is broader across devices and apps but operates only at the hostname-resolution layer. YouTube ads are a common example of the limitation: DNS filtering does not guarantee their removal when advertising and wanted video traffic share hostnames or delivery paths.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDNS-over-TLS, privacy, and anonymity
When Android’s Private DNS connects to a compatible provider, DNS-over-TLS encrypts the resolver conversation between the phone and that provider. This helps prevent a local Wi‑Fi operator from reading or modifying those DNS queries in transit. It does not hide the destination from every party involved in a connection, and it does not replace HTTPS, a VPN, browser privacy settings, or account-level privacy controls.

The DNS provider remains an important trust point because it receives the queries it resolves. Before choosing a service, read its current privacy and retention policy, identify whether account-linked logs are offered, and decide whether its jurisdiction and business model fit your needs. Do not infer a no-logging promise merely from the words “private DNS” or “DNS-over-TLS.”
Android and iPhone setup compared
| Question | Android | iPhone |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in entry point | Private DNS menu in Settings | Usually a configuration profile or provider app |
| Typical filtering value | dns.adguard-dns.com or an account-specific provider hostname |
Selected in the downloaded profile or provider app |
| Transport described by the setup | DNS-over-TLS for the manual Private DNS hostname | Determined by the installed profile or app’s DNS configuration |
| How to revert | Set Private DNS to Automatic | Disable or remove the profile in VPN & Device Management |
| Common failure | Hostname rejected or connectivity stops after saving | Wrong profile, conflicting profiles, or an approval that was never completed |
Quick verification checklist
- The intended hostname or profile is visible in the device settings.
- A normal webpage loads on both Wi‑Fi and mobile data where your policy is expected to apply.
- An app that previously showed third-party advertising behaves differently, while core functions still work.
- The filtering provider’s status or query log, if offered, shows requests from the device.
- A known false positive can be reversed by returning to Automatic on Android or removing the iPhone profile.
- You have recorded which policy is active so another household member can troubleshoot it later.
Common questions to settle before installation
What do I put in Android’s Private DNS provider hostname?
Enter the filtering service’s DNS-over-TLS hostname exactly as supplied. For the public AdGuard filtering server, use dns.adguard-dns.com. A personal account may provide a different hostname such as {Your_Device_ID}.d.adguard-dns.com; replace the placeholder with the identifier assigned to your device.
Can I type a DNS IP address in that field?
No. The manual Private DNS field is for a provider hostname used for DNS-over-TLS. A numeric address, a URL, or a hostname with a protocol prefix can be rejected or fail to connect.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWill this block ads in every app?
No. It blocks requests to domains included in the active lists. Ads that share a hostname with wanted content, use first-party delivery, or do not create a separate blockable DNS request can remain.
Does private DNS hide my browsing?
It encrypts DNS transport to the selected resolver. It does not make all browsing traffic anonymous, conceal every destination from every network participant, or prevent the resolver from seeing the queries it handles.
What should I do if a site stops working?
Temporarily return Android to Automatic or disable the iPhone profile. If the site works afterward, add a narrow allowlist exception through the provider or choose a less restrictive policy, then retest.
