The most effective way to secure an LG Smart TV is to treat it as one device in a secured home network: install the latest firmware, protect the router with WPA3 or WPA2 and unique administrator credentials, disable router features you do not use, and review the TV’s privacy agreements and tracking controls. The exact menus depend on the TV model, webOS version, and country.
Use this order: identify the model and webOS version, update the TV, harden the router, choose a suitable connection method, then reduce optional data collection and remove unused apps. These steps preserve streaming and other connected features without assuming that one setting protects every LG television.
1. Identify the exact TV model and webOS version
LG uses different menus across model years and webOS releases. Before changing settings, record the model number and software version shown in the TV’s information screen, then open the model-specific support page or manual. A procedure that is correct for a 2021 webOS 6.0 television may be different on an older set or on a television sold in another market.

Why this check matters
- Firmware-update paths and available privacy controls vary by webOS version.
- Some services, agreements, and labels differ by country, model, and the software installed on the TV.
- Router registration or access-control tools may require the TV’s MAC address. LG publishes a model-generation guide for finding it at LG’s MAC-address support page.
Write down the model and current software version before you start. If a menu in this guide is missing, stop and use the instructions for that exact model rather than selecting a similarly named option.

2. Update the TV firmware before changing other settings
Security fixes and compatibility changes arrive through firmware. LG says a connected TV can update automatically when automatic updates are enabled, and you can also check manually. For 2021 webOS 6.0 or later, LG’s documented route is Settings → All Settings → Support → Software Update. Choose Check for Updates, then enable Allow Automatic Updates (the wording can vary slightly by release). LG’s current instructions are available in its firmware-update guide.
Online update procedure
- Connect the TV to your home network and make sure it has stable power.
- Open Settings → All Settings → Support → Software Update on a 2021-or-newer webOS 6.0-or-later set.
- Select Check for Updates and read the version and release information shown.
- Install the update, leave the TV powered as instructed, and do not unplug it while the update is being applied.
- Return to the same screen after the restart and confirm that automatic updates remain enabled if you want unattended updates.
Older webOS versions
Older software has different routes; LG documents paths that include General → About This TV on webOS 4.5 or earlier. Do not force the newer menu sequence onto an older set. Use the model-specific instructions in LG’s Smart TV update guide.
Updating a TV that is offline
LG’s June 2026 instructions describe a USB method for televisions that cannot update over the network. Use an empty USB flash drive with at least 1 GB of capacity and download only the software file intended for the exact model from LG’s support page. Follow the folder and extraction instructions in that model’s guide, insert the drive into the TV, and approve the update when prompted. A file for a different model can make the TV unusable, so do not substitute a similar-looking download.

How long updates are expected to continue
In its September 12, 2026 corporate privacy statement, LG says eligible TV products receive security updates for up to five years from the initial release of the applicable webOS platform version, subject to LG’s support policies and applicable requirements. “Up to five years” is a policy duration, not a promise that every model qualifies or that every television has the same end date. Check the support status for your model.
3. Secure the home router that the TV uses
Router security protects every device on the network, including the television. The Federal Trade Commission recommends WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal encryption, unique Wi-Fi and router-administrator credentials, current router software, an enabled firewall, and disabling remote management, WPS, and UPnP when they are not needed. Apply the core router settings
- Sign in to the router’s administrator interface using the procedure supplied by the router maker or your internet provider.
- Set the wireless security mode to WPA3 Personal when all required devices support it. Otherwise use WPA2 Personal; do not leave the network on an obsolete open or weak legacy mode.
- Replace the factory Wi-Fi name and password with a unique password that is not reused for email, shopping, or other accounts.
- Change the router administrator username and password if the device permits it. Keep these credentials different from the Wi-Fi password.
- Install the latest router firmware or enable the router’s automatic update feature when available.
- Confirm that the router firewall is enabled.
- Turn off remote administration unless you have a specific, understood need for it. Remote management exposes the router’s control panel beyond the local network.
- Disable WPS if you do not use it. WPS can make joining easier, but leaving an unneeded enrollment feature active adds no benefit to a household that already knows its Wi-Fi password.
- Disable UPnP if no device or application in your home requires automatic port mapping. If a device stops working afterward, consult its documentation before deciding whether UPnP is genuinely necessary.
Router interfaces use different names and locations for these controls. If you cannot find one, use the router manufacturer’s or ISP’s current instructions rather than guessing.

Use a guest network deliberately
A guest network can keep visitors from needing the primary Wi-Fi password and can reduce how broadly that password is shared. Guest-network behavior is not uniform: the available isolation options depend on the router, and the FTC guidance does not establish that every guest network isolates connected clients from one another or from the main network. Read the router’s description of guest access before placing a device there.

LG supports both wireless networking and a wired LAN connection. Its setup guidance notes that wireless performance can be affected by interference and the surrounding radio environment. A wired connection can avoid local Wi-Fi interference, but a cable by itself is not a security control; the router still needs encryption, updates, and strong credentials. Neither choice removes the need for firmware updates or router hardening. Select the connection that is reliable and practical in your room, then secure the underlying network.

5. Review LG privacy agreements and turn off optional tracking
Open the TV’s Privacy & Terms (or similarly named privacy area) and read the agreements that are enabled on your set. The labels and available choices can change by market, model, and software version. LG’s September 12, 2026 explanation states that Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), voice recognition, and interest-based advertising are optional and that some uses have separate agreements. LG says users can withdraw consent or turn ACR off in the TV’s settings. Read LG’s corporate privacy statement for the company’s description of these controls.

LG’s privacy notice says voice processing begins when a supported wake-word feature is activated or when a voice/AI remote button is pressed. It also describes device discovery as a separate function used to recognize and connect compatible external devices. These are LG’s statements about its practices, not independent verification of every model’s behavior. LG also states: “Features such as Automatic Content Recognition (ACR), voice recognition, and interest-based advertising are optional. These features are not enabled by default.” Defaults can nevertheless differ by market, model, setup flow, or a later software change, so verify the state shown on your own TV.

6. Remove apps and connected services you no longer use
Uninstall unused applications from the TV’s app-management screen and sign out of services that you no longer access. The FTC’s connected-device guidance recommends reviewing tracking settings and removing unused apps; see Securing Your Internet-Connected Devices at Home. Removing an app reduces clutter and eliminates an account or integration you no longer need to maintain, but it does not replace router security or firmware updates.
Keep accounts under control
- Use a different password for each streaming or smart-TV account.
- Enable multifactor authentication on services that offer it, using the service’s own account settings.
- Sign out before giving away, selling, or recycling the TV.
- Factory-reset the television before transferring ownership, then remove it from account-management pages where the service provides that option.
7. Treat MAC filtering as an identification aid, not encryption
A router may offer MAC-address allowlists or access-control rules, and LG provides instructions for locating the TV’s MAC address. Such a rule can help you recognize a device or prevent an unknown address from joining under a specific router configuration, but it is not a substitute for WPA3/WPA2 encryption and strong credentials. Do not rely on MAC filtering as the primary defense.
8. Check the TV after each change
Security settings are useful only if the television still receives updates and performs the functions you intend to keep. Make one change at a time and test the result.

If the TV will not reconnect to Wi-Fi
- Confirm that the router is broadcasting the network name and that the password was entered exactly.
- Check that the router still uses WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal and that the TV supports the selected mode.
- Restart the router and TV, then try the connection again.
- If the TV is on a guest network, check that the guest network permits the TV’s required internet access.
- Use LG’s model-specific network instructions if the on-screen labels differ.
If an app or device stopped working
Review the change that immediately preceded the failure. Disabling UPnP, device discovery, an agreement, or a network segment can affect a feature that depends on it. Re-enable only the specific function that the service requires, keep the router firewall and encryption enabled, and avoid turning on unrelated features.

- Every few months: remove unused apps and review accounts, connected devices, and guest-network access.
- When moving or replacing equipment: update the Wi-Fi password if it has been widely shared, remove old devices from router access lists, and factory-reset a TV that leaves your household.
Final security checklist
- Model and webOS version recorded.
- Latest model-specific firmware installed; automatic updates enabled where available.
- Router uses WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal.
- Wi-Fi and router-administrator credentials are unique and no longer factory defaults.
- Router firmware is current and its firewall is enabled.
- Remote management, WPS, and UPnP are disabled unless a known need exists.
- Guest-network behavior has been checked before using it for visitors or devices.
- Privacy agreements, ACR, interest-based advertising, voice features, and device discovery match the household’s choices.
- Unused apps and accounts have been removed or signed out.
- Any Ethernet installation uses Cat5-or-higher cable with an RJ45 connector, while the router remains properly secured.
