The most reliable way to make a Khazalite Holds army look like one force is to keep four things identical on every model: the main armour metal, the dark recess colour, the leather, and the basing recipe. Let clans and battlefield roles vary only through a restrained shield or cloth accent. A warm bronze or iron foundation, slate stone, dark leather and one controlled accent colour suits the faction’s forge, karak, gem and Ancestor God imagery without making the army visually busy.

This is an editorial scheme rather than a published Khazalite studio recipe. Games Workshop revealed the faction on 18 September 2026, and the material available for the reveal establishes the setting and units but does not prescribe a canonical paint palette. The method below gives you a repeatable recipe for the Army Set, later releases and existing Fyreslayer models used with the battletome.

What a unified Khazalite Holds scheme needs to achieve

Khazalite Holds are a new Age of Sigmar duardin faction built around mountain karaks: upper halls, deep underground chambers, self-sufficient farms, gem mines and a great forge described as the hold’s “pounding heart.” Their visual identity therefore has several natural materials competing for attention: forged armour, carved stone, leather equipment, glowing runes and clan markings.

A unified scheme does not mean every miniature is identical. It means the eye sees the same host before it notices individual clans. The practical rule is to repeat the largest visual areas and reserve variation for small areas:

  • Shared foundation: armour metal, recess shade, leather, stone and bases.
  • Controlled variation: shield faces, cloth panels, weapon haft bindings and selected runes.
  • Rare highlights: gemstones, character markings and special weapon effects.

Use the same foundation on Clanshields, Gholems, artillery, Runewrights and Guardians. When the army is photographed or viewed across a gaming table, those repeated materials create cohesion even when a unit has a different accent colour.

Choose the foundation palette before opening a paint pot

Pick one option in each row and write it down. The exact brands are less important than consistency: changing the metal or leather recipe halfway through a collection is more disruptive than choosing a slightly different hue.

Army area Recommended choice How to use it Why it unifies the army
Main armour Warm bronze, dark iron or a bronze-iron mix Apply to helmets, breastplates, shields, weapon heads and mechanical fittings. Reserve the brightest highlight for edges. Every warscroll carries the same forge-made visual language.
Recesses One deep brown-black or blue-black shade Run it into panel lines, joints, chainmail and the undersides of plates. Keep it consistent on metal, stone and weapons where shadows meet. A shared shadow temperature makes different materials look like one army.
Leather One dark umber or red-brown Use it on straps, gloves, pouches, scabbards and tool grips. Add a lighter brown edge only where the sculpt catches light. Repeated straps and pouches form a second army-wide colour block.
Stone Slate grey, charcoal granite or cool grey-brown Use on Gholem bodies, mortar and cannon details, runic slabs and scenic rocks. It ties constructs and artillery to the underground karak setting.
Accent One warm red, ochre, ember-orange or teal Place it on shield panels, cloth, unit markings and a limited number of runes. Keep it off most armour plates. A controlled signal colour identifies clans without fragmenting the host.
Rune and gem glow A lighter version of the accent, or a related pale colour Use sparingly on runes, lenses and gems; repeat the same glow colour across units. Common magical light links characters, constructs and war machines.

A useful painter’s heuristic is a 70/20/10 split: roughly 70 percent foundation colours, 20 percent secondary materials such as stone and lighter leather, and 10 percent accent. It is not a published Khazalite statistic; treat it as a way to stop accents from taking over.

Warm bronze or iron: decide what your forge looks like

Warm bronze for an ancestral, ceremonial host

Bronze makes the army feel old, worked and connected to ancestral halls. Start with a medium warm bronze, shade it with the chosen dark recess colour, then restore the raised bronze and finish with a small amount of pale gold-bronze on corners. This approach is especially effective on ornate shields, Runewright details and the armour of High Kyng Valankrom.

Dark iron for a working karak

Iron gives Clanshields, Clangunners and artillery a harder industrial appearance. Use a near-black iron base, a dark shade in joints, then a neutral or slightly warm steel edge highlight. Add a restrained bronze secondary colour to rivets, belt buckles and selected runes so the scheme still has warmth.

A bronze-and-iron split without losing unity

If you want more material contrast, make iron the armour foundation and bronze the repeating secondary metal. Do not assign an entirely different metal to every clan. Keep the ratio stable: for example, iron on most plates and bronze on trim, weapon fittings and icon frames. The same ratio should appear on infantry, Gholems and artillery.

Prepare and prime a test model

Before assembling a whole unit, paint one ordinary model from the range. A Clanshield is a useful test because it contains armour, leather, a shield, a weapon and a base. The test is not a display piece; it answers practical questions about coverage, contrast and speed.

  1. Clean and assemble: remove mould lines and decide whether shields, weapons or scenic parts are easier to paint separately.
  2. Prime consistently: use one undercoat across the army. A dark primer deepens iron and recesses; a light primer makes bronze, ochre and teal brighter.
  3. Block the foundation: paint the armour, leather and stone before touching small decorations. Leave the primer visible in the deepest joints if it already provides a suitable shadow.
  4. Shade: place the selected dark shade into recesses rather than flooding every surface. Clean tide marks while the shade is still workable.
  5. Restore and highlight: repaint raised armour panels, then add a narrow edge highlight to helmets, knuckles, shield rims and weapon edges.
  6. Add the accent: paint the same shield or cloth colour you intend to use for the whole clan.
  7. Finish the base: apply the planned texture, drybrush and rim colour. Photograph the model beside a white note listing every paint and step.

If the armour is too bright, darken the recess shade or reduce the edge highlight before starting the army. If the model looks like a collection of unrelated materials, simplify the leather and accent colours rather than adding more effects.

Classic and Contrast workflows: which is better for this army?

Games Workshop’s Battle Ready guidance describes two scalable routes. The Classic method uses Base, Shade and Technical paints. The Contrast method uses Contrast and Technical paints over an appropriate undercoat. Both can produce a coherent Khazalite force; the choice is mainly about speed, opacity and control.

Consideration Classic Base/Shade/Technical Contrast/Technical
Speed Slower on large armour plates because you establish a base, shade and highlights separately. Usually faster on textured leather, chainmail, stone and recessed details because colour and shading happen together.
Opacity More predictable coverage and easier correction when changing from primer to bronze, iron or accent. Translucent by design; the undercoat strongly affects the final colour and smooth flat plates may need extra layers.
Edge control Best for crisp armour panels, shield designs and deliberate metal highlights. Excellent in deep texture but can pool on broad plates or around rivets if overloaded.
Best Khazalite uses Armour, large shields, character faces and two-tone metal trim. Leather, stone, chainmail, runic recesses and quick batch work.
Correction Easy to repaint a panel with the foundation colour. Often requires restoring the undercoat or base colour before applying a new layer.

A hybrid is practical: use a controlled Classic process for the common armour metal and accent shields, then use Contrast on leather or stone where texture does the work. Keep the final shade and highlight colours consistent with the rest of the collection.

Apply the recipe across the Khazalite units

Clanshields

Make Clanshields the reference unit for the army. Put the foundation metal on helmets, plates and shield rims; dark leather on straps, gloves and pouches; and the clan accent on the shield face or a single cloth panel. Repeat the same accent on every shield, but vary weathering and small rune marks so the rank-and-file do not look mechanically copied.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gholems of Gazul and Gholems of Valaya

Use slate or granite as the dominant body material, with the same armour metal on collars, weapon heads and protective plates. Keep the stone cool if your metal is warm; that temperature contrast makes the forge equipment readable. If you build Gholems of Valaya instead, retain the identical stone, metal, leather and base recipes. The build option can change the unit’s identity without changing the host’s palette.

Oathkeeper Cannon or Stonebreaker Mortar

Paint the carriage, armour plates and crew equipment with the same metal and leather as infantry. Use stone on masonry, counterweights or scenic rubble. Give the cannon or mortar only a small accent panel, such as a painted shield badge or cloth tie, so the war machine supports the army rather than becoming a separate colour block.

Clangunners

Repeat the infantry metal and leather, then use the accent on ammunition markings, shoulder cloth or a narrow weapon detail. Keep gun barrels darker than polished armour; a dark iron finish with a restrained edge highlight reads as functional equipment while remaining part of the forge palette.

Thrynns

Use the same foundation even if the sculpt has more movement or distinctive equipment. Let the accent identify the unit on a sash, shield or plume rather than changing the entire armour colour. This preserves the visual link between fast-moving models and the static Clanshields.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Runewrights

Runewrights are a good place for the army’s brightest controlled effect. Keep their armour and leather unchanged, then use the accent or its paler glow variant on runes, tablets and tools. Limit glow to recesses and nearby reflected edges; covering the entire model in luminous colour will erase the metal-and-stone structure.

High Kyng Valankrom

Use the established army recipe rather than inventing a separate royal palette. Add a second highlight step to the armour, a slightly cleaner accent on the largest shield or cloak area, and a few extra gems. The model should look more finished and important, not like it belongs to another karak.

Valayan Guardians

Keep the shared metal, leather and base. Their unit accent can be a brighter or darker value of the army colour, but keep the hue family recognizable. Repeating the same rune glow on Guardians and Runewrights makes the elite unit feel connected to the hold’s spiritual and ancestral motifs.

Build a clan accent system that stays readable

Assign each clan or battlefield role a single accent, but keep all foundation materials fixed. If you use more than one accent, make the colours deliberately different in value so they remain distinguishable at tabletop distance.

Accent approach Readability against metal Where to repeat it Risk to control
Deep red or ember Strong against bronze and dark iron; immediately signals warmth and battle. Shield faces, cloth strips, weapon ties and selected runes. Too much red can make every model look like a hero; keep it to small panels.
Ochre or muted yellow High visibility on dark iron and slate stone. Clan badges, hazard marks, banners and gem settings. Thin coverage may look patchy; use a solid base and controlled highlight.
Teal or blue-green Clear cool contrast against warm bronze. Cloth, shield insets, lenses and a matching rune glow. Bright teal can overpower the earthy karak palette; mute it with a darker shade.

For a mixed force, choose one army-wide accent and reserve a second colour for a clearly defined role such as artillery crews or a character’s retinue. Do not let every warscroll introduce a new colour. A viewer should be able to identify the accent before reading the unit’s details.

Integrate Grimmdron and existing Fyreslayer models

The Khazalite battletome incorporates the Fyreslayers, referred to in this context as Grimmdron, and the official reveal says existing Fyreslayer miniatures can be used. Their exposed skin and flame motifs are naturally more distinctive than armoured Khazalite infantry, so trying to repaint every surface to match can make them look forced.

Instead, preserve the parts that make those models recognizably Fyreslayer while repeating three army anchors:

  • Basing: use exactly the same texture, drybrush and rim colour as the Khazalite units.
  • Metal: apply the chosen bronze or iron to shared weapons, buckles and armour areas where the sculpt permits it.
  • Accent: echo the Khazalite shield or cloth colour in a banner, weapon wrap, gem or small rune.

Leave their skin and flame details with their own treatment. The common ground and metal will make them read as allied members of one duardin host without erasing their sculpted identity.

Make the bases part of the karak story

Bases are the easiest way to unify models painted at different times. Choose one ground recipe and use it on infantry, constructs, artillery and Grimmdron. Slate chips, dark gravel or a cool grey-brown earth all support the mountain-hold setting. Add a few larger stones to artillery and Gholem bases, but keep the texture family unchanged.

  1. Cover the base with one texture or a mixture of fine grit and larger stone fragments.
  2. Paint the ground a dark neutral that contrasts with the armour metal.
  3. Drybrush a lighter slate or granite tone from the direction you use for model highlights.
  4. Pick out only a few sharp rocks with a paler grey; leaving some dark areas prevents the base from competing with the miniature.
  5. Paint every rim the same colour and finish. A consistent rim is especially important when models use different accent colours.

For a forge-heavy display, add tiny metallic fragments or ember-coloured cracks to selected bases, not every base. Repetition matters more than decoration.

Paint runes, gems and weathering without losing the foundation

Runes and gems

Start with the same dark recess colour used elsewhere, then apply the accent or glow colour inside the rune. Add a smaller pale dot or line toward the light-facing edge. Keep the glow contained. A rune should read as a bright detail inside a metal or stone surface, not as a new primary material.

Edge wear

Use a lighter version of the armour metal on the most exposed corners: shield rims, helmet brows, knee plates and weapon edges. For chipped paint, add a small dark mark first, then place a narrow metal line on its lower edge. Limit chips to areas that would plausibly contact weapons or stone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forge soot and grime

Darken recesses around gun barrels, hammer heads and the lower edges of artillery. Keep the grime colour related to the shared recess shade. If every model receives a different brown or black wash, the army will lose the common visual temperature.

Batch-paint the army in repeatable stages

Once the test model works, record the exact order and paint a small batch rather than an entire collection. Five to ten infantry models are enough to reveal whether the scheme remains enjoyable and whether the accent is too dominant.

  1. Assembly batch: group models with similar subassemblies and mark any pieces that need separate painting.
  2. Foundation batch: paint all armour metal on the group, then all leather, then all stone. Avoid switching randomly between models.
  3. Shade batch: shade the same material across every model before moving to the next material. This keeps the shade strength consistent.
  4. Highlight batch: restore broad surfaces and edge-highlight the same locations on each miniature.
  5. Accent batch: paint shield faces, cloth and runes together so the colour remains consistent from unit to unit.
  6. Base batch: texture, drybrush and rim every base in one session.

Keep one finished test model beside the workbench. It is your colour authority when a new kit, a different primer or a replacement paint changes the appearance of a batch.

Use the Battle Ready standard as your stopping point

Games Workshop defines Battle Ready as a miniature with its main areas coloured and a simple finished base. For the Classic route, that means Base, Shade and Technical paints; for the Contrast route, it means Contrast and Technical paints over an appropriate undercoat. The standard is useful for a large Khazalite force because it gives you a clear completion target before optional display highlights.

For a Battle Ready Khazalite, the armour, leather, stone, accent and base should all be visibly complete; recesses should be shaded; and the model should have a consistent rim. Extra edge highlights, glowing runes, weathering and gems can follow after the army is playable.

Troubleshoot common scheme problems

“The units look like separate armies.”

Check the bases and leather first. If either varies, repainting every shield is unnecessary. Standardize the rim colour, texture and leather recipe, then ensure the same metal appears on each unit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The bronze looks flat.”

Deepen the recess shade, restore the raised bronze after shading and add a narrower edge highlight. Do not solve a flat surface by adding a second accent colour across the armour.

“The stone models disappear against the bases.”

Change the value, not the entire palette. Use a lighter drybrush on Gholems or a darker base texture so the slate body separates from the ground while remaining part of the same karak family.

“The accent colour takes over.”

Reduce it to shield centres, one cloth panel and selected runes. Repaint large areas with the foundation metal or leather. The 70/20/10 heuristic is a useful visual check, not a rule you must calculate precisely.

“Contrast pooled on armour plates.”

Wick away excess paint with a clean brush while it is wet, allow the panel to dry, then smooth it with the base colour. Reserve Contrast for textured areas or use the Classic method on broad plates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Fyreslayers do not match.”

Do not repaint their exposed skin simply to force a match. Rebase them, repeat the army metal where appropriate and add the shared accent to a small detail. Those repeated anchors are enough to establish the alliance.

A simple decision framework for your final scheme

  • Choose warm bronze if you want ceremonial, ancestral and jewel-like emphasis.
  • Choose dark iron if you want a practical, industrial forge appearance.
  • Choose bronze trim over iron if you want strong material contrast without separate clan palettes.
  • Choose Classic for maximum control on smooth armour and shields.
  • Choose Contrast for speed on leather, stone and textured details.
  • Choose one accent for the cleanest army identity; add a second only for a clearly defined role.

The finished result should show the same hold at a glance: common metal, leather, stone, runes and ground, with clan colour used as punctuation. That balance lets the broad Khazalite range, artillery and Grimmdron allies feel like one duardin force while leaving room for individual character.
