To move cryptocurrency into cold storage, set up a new wallet on a hardware device, make and verify its recovery backup, then send the funds on the correct network to a receive address you have checked on the device screen. For a large transfer, send a small test amount first and confirm it arrives before moving the rest.

What “moving crypto to cold storage” actually means

Cryptocurrency does not move into a hardware wallet like a file being copied onto a drive. The asset remains recorded on its blockchain. What changes is which keys control it: a cold-storage wallet uses private keys kept offline to authorize transactions. A hardware wallet is one common way to hold and use those keys. Bitcoin.org explains that bitcoins are not stored in a wallet in the ordinary physical sense; a wallet manages the keys needed to access and spend them.

That distinction matters because the receive address is not the secret. You can share a receive address with the exchange or wallet sending your funds. Your recovery backup—the phrase or other backup information the device instructs you to record—is the secret that could allow someone to recover control of the wallet. Never send it to anyone or enter it into a website, computer, or phone.

Cold storage changes how the keys are kept; it does not change the blockchain, erase transaction history, or make a transfer private. The transfer is an on-chain transaction from the address controlled by your exchange or old wallet to an address controlled by your new wallet. You still need to choose the right asset and network, pay any applicable fee, and confirm the destination carefully.

A hardware wallet is one option, not a guarantee of safety by itself. Its value depends on a sound setup, a protected recovery backup, accurate address verification, and your ability to use it without exposing the backup. Exchanges, wallet apps, device interfaces, and supported assets differ, so follow the official instructions for the particular device and service you use.

Before you transfer: check the destination and the route

A transfer can fail even when an address looks plausible. The asset must be supported by the destination wallet, and the network selected by the sender must match the network supported by that wallet and address. A token may be available on more than one network; choosing a different one from the destination’s supported route can leave funds inaccessible. Customer support generally cannot reverse a blockchain transaction, and recovery after a wrong-network transfer is uncertain.

  • Identify the asset. Select the exact coin or token account you intend to receive, not merely a similarly named asset.
  • Identify the network. Check the withdrawal network shown by the exchange or sending wallet against the network supported by the destination. If either side is unclear, stop and consult the official instructions for the asset and destination wallet.
  • Check exchange rules. For withdrawals from an exchange, review its withdrawal minimum and fee. For deposits into a custodial exchange, also check that exchange’s minimum deposit. These rules vary and may change.
  • Plan for a test transaction. A test adds a second transaction and may add a fee. The amount must be high enough to satisfy any applicable minimum.

Do not assume that two addresses are interchangeable because they look similar, or because an asset name appears in both apps. Confirm the exact asset and network at both ends before sending.

How to identify the network

Start with the withdrawal screen at the sending exchange or wallet: it should identify the network available for the selected asset. Then check the destination wallet’s official asset and network instructions and confirm that it supports that precise route. A matching ticker or token name is not enough. The same asset may be offered on multiple networks, and selecting one does not automatically convert it to another.

If the sender and destination use different labels, do not infer that the labels mean the same thing. Look for the exact network name in both services’ official help material. If you cannot establish that they match, pause rather than sending a test—or the full balance—on a guess. Instructions and supported networks can change, so check them when you make the transfer instead of relying on an old note or a prior transaction.

Distinguish the different limits and costs

An exchange withdrawal minimum is the smallest amount the exchange allows you to withdraw under its current rules. A destination exchange’s minimum deposit is the smallest incoming deposit it will credit under its rules. These limits are not interchangeable. If you are moving funds from an exchange to your own hardware wallet, check the sender’s withdrawal rules. If the intended destination is a custodial exchange, check that exchange’s deposit minimum as well.

Network fees are another consideration. The sender may display a fee or deduct it from the amount being sent; review the actual confirmation screen and the service’s current fee details. A test transfer can create an extra fee because it is an additional transaction, and a test that is too small may be rejected or fail to meet a relevant minimum. There is no single fee, minimum, or interface flow that applies to every exchange, asset, and network.

Step 1: Set up a new wallet and verify its recovery backup

Initialize the hardware wallet through the manufacturer’s official setup flow. If this is a new cold-storage destination, create a new wallet on the device rather than restoring a backup from another wallet by default. Restoring is a separate choice and can preserve risks tied to the earlier wallet or provider.

  1. Follow the device’s official setup instructions to create the wallet.
  2. Record the recovery backup exactly as the device presents it, in the order shown.
  3. Complete the device’s backup check, if its setup flow asks you to do so.
  4. Store the backup physically in a secure place, offline and separate from routine computer or phone files.

Do not use a recovery phrase supplied by a seller. Do not photograph or scan your backup, save it in a notes app or cloud account, or type it into a computer, phone, website, or support chat. Trezor’s guidance is to enter a wallet backup only when prompted by the physical device. The recovery backup should not be needed to receive a transfer.

There is an important difference between creating a new wallet and restoring one. Creating a new wallet generates a new set of keys through the device’s setup process. Restoring uses an existing backup to regain access to a wallet. If you restore, you are choosing to reuse the earlier wallet’s keys; that may be appropriate in some circumstances, but it is not the same as starting a fresh cold-storage destination. Trezor recommends creating a new wallet when moving funds from another wallet, rather than treating restoration as the default.

Keep your backup private even if someone claims to be from the wallet maker, exchange, or customer support. A legitimate need to receive cryptocurrency does not require you to provide the backup. If setup or troubleshooting instructions appear to ask you to type it into a computer, phone, website, or chat, stop and verify the instructions through the manufacturer’s official support channels. The physical device’s prompt is the boundary Trezor specifies for entering a wallet backup.

Step 2: Select the correct account in the official companion app

Open the wallet’s official companion app and choose the account for the exact asset and network you plan to receive. Wallet and app support varies by device, asset, and network; a device that supports one asset does not necessarily support every token or network. Confirm compatibility in the selected wallet’s official instructions before generating an address.

Keep the distinction between the app and the hardware device in mind: the app helps display account information and prepare actions, while the device is where you verify the receive address and authorize relevant wallet operations. Do not infer compatibility from a token appearing in a search result or a third-party listing.

If you are choosing a device, compare it against your own use rather than assuming one brand works with every asset. Check support for the specific coin or token and network you intend to use, how the device lets you verify a receive address, the setup and backup process, and the recovery method. Also consider whether you can follow that process correctly. No general comparison establishes that one device is universally safer or compatible with every token; the relevant question is whether the chosen wallet supports your exact transfer and whether you can use it safely.

Use the manufacturer’s official app or companion software and instructions. An app can show account details or prepare a transaction, but seeing an asset name in an interface alone is not proof that the exact network is supported. If the account, asset, or network options do not line up with the sender’s withdrawal screen, do not proceed until you have checked official guidance for both sides.

Step 3: Generate and verify a fresh receive address

Use the app’s receive function for the selected account. Before copying the address, compare the full address displayed in the app with the one shown on the hardware device screen. The address displayed on the physical device is the check against malware that could replace a copied address on a computer or phone.

  1. Choose the correct asset account and network, then open its receive option.
  2. Display the receive address on the hardware device when prompted.
  3. Compare the address on the device with the address in the app. Verify the full string, not just its first or last few characters.
  4. Only after they match, copy the verified address for the withdrawal.

Do not take an address from a prior transaction in your history. Address-poisoning scams can place lookalike addresses in transaction histories, hoping that someone copies one later. A previously used address may still be valid, but copying it from history skips the device verification that protects this step.

It is useful to treat address verification and network verification as separate checks. The address may match character-for-character on the device and in the app, but that does not establish that the sender will use a network supported by the destination. Conversely, choosing a supported network does not prove that the pasted destination address is the one shown on the device. Confirm both before submitting.

The hardware wallet does not need to stay connected for the address to receive funds. Once the correct address is generated, the transaction can arrive on-chain while the device is offline. Keep the recovery backup private throughout.

Step 4: Enter the withdrawal at the sending exchange or wallet

Start a withdrawal from the exchange or a send from the old software wallet. The exact labels and screens differ by provider, so rely on that service’s current instructions rather than assuming a universal button path.

  1. Select the same asset account and network that you checked at the destination.
  2. Paste the verified receive address. Compare it with the address displayed on the hardware device before submitting.
  3. Enter the amount, taking account of the withdrawal fee and any minimum withdrawal or deposit rule that applies.
  4. Review the asset, network, destination address, amount, and fee on the final confirmation screen.
  5. Confirm only when every field matches the intended transfer.

Exchanges may offer several networks for an asset. Do not choose a network solely because its fee is lower; the destination must support that precise network. If the sender and recipient interfaces use different terminology or you are uncertain whether two network labels refer to the same route, do not guess—check official guidance for both services.

For an exchange withdrawal, pay attention to what the final screen says about the fee and amount. The displayed amount may not be the amount that arrives if a fee is deducted, and a minimum may prevent the withdrawal from being submitted. For a send from an old self-custody wallet, review its own fee and transaction details. The exact fee schedule and controls depend on the service and network, so use the current information shown by the sender rather than assuming a fixed cost.

Before you confirm, make one deliberate review of the destination address, asset, network, amount, and fee. If the sender supports address whitelisting or other controls, follow its official instructions if you use them, but do not treat any additional setting as a substitute for checking the actual recipient and route. Never confirm just because a screen looks familiar from a previous transfer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Test a large transfer, then send the balance

For a large move, first send a small test amount that meets the sender’s minimum and any relevant recipient deposit threshold. Wait until the transaction is confirmed and verify that the funds appear in the intended destination account, or use the sender’s transaction record to confirm the destination and status. The confirmation time depends on the network; there is no single wait time that applies to every transfer.

A test is a way to check the route before committing the larger amount, not a guarantee that every later detail is correct. It adds another transaction and may incur another network fee. Choose an amount that is small relative to the balance but large enough to pass the sender’s rules and any recipient minimum that applies. If you cannot make a test large enough to meet those conditions, do not assume that a rejected or uncredited test validates the route.

Once the test is confirmed and visible in the correct account, begin a second withdrawal for the remaining balance. Recheck the asset, network, address, amount, and fee before confirming. A successful test is useful evidence that the route and address were entered correctly, but it does not remove the need to check the larger transaction’s details.

Keep the transaction ID if you want to track the transfer or ask the sending service about its status. A transaction ID is not the recovery backup, but avoid confusing any public transaction information with permission to disclose the wallet’s secret backup.

What to do if something looks wrong

The app and device show different addresses

Do not send. Close or cancel the receive flow, reconnect the device if needed, and generate a fresh address through the official app. Verify it again on the device. A mismatch can indicate an app, clipboard, or device-display problem; copying the app address anyway defeats the verification check.

The sender offers a network you cannot confirm

Stop before submitting the withdrawal. Verify that the destination wallet supports the exact network, not simply the asset ticker or name. Consult the official asset and wallet instructions; do not rely on a search result, a message from a stranger, or an assumption based on another asset transfer.

The test has not appeared

Do not send the remaining balance until you have checked the transaction status and destination. Use the transaction ID in the sending service’s status view, and verify the address and network recorded for that transaction. Pending status, confirmation requirements, and display delays differ across networks and providers. If the transaction is confirmed but the wallet does not show it, consult the wallet’s official support guidance for that asset and network rather than entering the recovery backup into a website or support conversation.

You sent to the wrong address or network

Contact the sending service and the destination provider through their official support channels promptly, and provide the transaction ID if requested. Do not assume the transfer can be reversed or recovered: blockchain transactions are generally not reversible by customer support, and the outcome depends on the network and whether a compatible destination controls the receiving address. Never share the recovery backup as a way to request help.

Even when a transfer was sent to an address you control, a network mismatch can make the funds inaccessible through the wallet’s ordinary interface. Any recovery path depends on the asset, network, and destination’s technical support; it is uncertain and should not be promised. Confirm the relevant providers’ official instructions before taking further action.

Final safety check

  • The wallet was initialized through its official setup flow, and its recovery backup was recorded and checked.
  • The recovery backup has stayed offline and private; it was not supplied by a seller or typed into an online device.
  • The selected destination account supports the exact asset and network.
  • The receive address was checked in full against the hardware device’s display.
  • The withdrawal amount, network, fee, minimum rules, and destination were reviewed before confirmation.
  • A large transfer was preceded by a confirmed test sent over the same route.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I receive cryptocurrency into cold storage?

Set up a wallet on a hardware device, select an account that supports the exact asset and network, and generate a receive address in the official companion app. Verify the full address against the device screen before giving it to the exchange or wallet sending your funds. Your device can remain offline while the transaction arrives; keep the recovery backup private.

How do I know which network to select?

Check the network offered on the sender’s withdrawal screen against the exact network supported by the destination wallet for that asset. Do not rely on a matching ticker or a similar network name. If the labels differ or you cannot confirm the match, stop and check the official instructions for both services.

Do cryptocurrency funds move onto the hardware wallet itself?

No. The funds remain recorded on the blockchain. The hardware wallet holds or uses the keys that control the destination address; sending crypto to that address changes which keys control it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need to keep the hardware wallet connected to receive funds?

No. Once you have generated and verified the receive address, the on-chain transaction can arrive while the device is offline. You should still keep the recovery backup secure and offline.

Should I restore an old wallet backup or create a new wallet?

For a new cold-storage destination, Trezor recommends creating a new wallet on the device. Restoring an existing backup is a different choice that reuses the earlier wallet and may preserve risks associated with that wallet or provider. Follow your device maker’s official instructions.

Should I send a test transaction first?

For a large transfer, a small test is a prudent check: wait for it to confirm and verify it appears in the intended wallet before sending the balance. Check sender withdrawal rules and any relevant recipient deposit minimum first. A test creates another transaction and may add a fee.

What happens if I send crypto using the wrong network?

The funds may become inaccessible, and recovery is uncertain. Blockchain transfers are generally not reversible by customer support. Contact the sender and destination provider through official channels and provide the transaction ID if requested, but never share your recovery backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I enter my recovery phrase into an app or support website?

Do not type, photograph, scan, or store the recovery backup on a computer, phone, website, or support chat. Trezor says to enter a wallet backup only when prompted by the physical device. You do not need to share it to receive funds.

The Bottom Line

Move crypto to cold storage by creating and backing up a new wallet through the device’s official setup, confirming the exact asset and network, and checking the full receive address on the hardware device. For a large balance, test the route and wait for confirmation before sending the rest. Keep the recovery backup offline and private: no transfer or support request should require you to reveal it.
