You can make a complete World of Warcraft machinima with a conventional pipeline: write and storyboard a short scene, stage characters and camera moves in the game client, record clean video and audio with OBS Studio, edit and finish in DaVinci Resolve, and use Blender only for shots that need tracking, masking, compositing, or a reconstructed 3D camera. Generative AI is not required. The production decision that matters most is to keep the first film short, capture multiple takes, and check Blizzard’s current video policy before publishing.
The practical no-generative-AI pipeline
A machinima is a filmed performance assembled from a game’s rendered world. In this workflow, the game client supplies the actors, sets, lighting, animation and camera views; OBS Studio records those views; DaVinci Resolve turns the recordings into a finished film; and Blender handles specialized visual-effects work when an ordinary editor is not enough.
| Stage | Primary task | Recommended tool |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-production | Story, dialogue, shot list, storyboard and delivery decisions | Writing and drawing tools you already know |
| In-game production | Locations, character positions, emotes, movement and repeated takes | World of Warcraft client |
| Capture | Video, game sound, microphone and scene switching | OBS Studio |
| Editorial finishing | Selects, pacing, dialogue, music, titles, color and export | DaVinci Resolve |
| Specialized VFX | Camera tracking, object tracking, masking, match moves and compositing | Blender |
This division keeps the work manageable. Do not send every shot through a 3D package simply because one shot needs an effect, and do not try to solve editorial timing while actors are still being staged in the client.
Plan a short film before opening the game
Choose a production-sized idea
For a first project, design one scene with a small cast and a clear change from beginning to end. A short exchange, a discovery, or a single action sequence gives you room to learn staging and editing without creating hundreds of assets. Limit the number of locations and decide whether the film will be silent, subtitled, narrated, or dialogue-driven.

Write a beat sheet and dialogue draft
List the story beats in order before writing polished lines. Each beat should answer one of these questions: What does the viewer need to understand? Who is acting? What changes? What image proves that change? Then write dialogue that can be performed with the emotes and movement available in the client. If a line requires a facial expression or gesture the game cannot provide, rewrite the line or plan to communicate it with a cutaway, subtitle, or voiceover.
Build a shot list
Give every shot an identifier and record the intended framing, subject, action, approximate duration, sound and transition. A useful entry might specify a wide establishing view, a medium reaction, or a close detail of an object. Note which shots can be captured consecutively in one location and which require a set change. This prevents you from losing continuity when you return to the client later.
Storyboard the action
Simple thumbnails are enough. Draw the screen direction, character positions and major eyelines rather than trying to create finished art. Storyboards expose problems such as two characters standing on top of each other, an important action hidden behind scenery, or a camera move that cannot be reproduced with the client’s controls.
Lock delivery choices early
Choose the aspect ratio and frame rate before recording. Decide where music and sound effects will come from, whether titles are needed, and whether dialogue will be recorded live, replaced with narration, or added as subtitles. Changing these decisions after capture can force you to reframe or recut every shot.
Stage actors, locations and camera action in WoW
Select a controllable location
Favor spaces where you can reliably place characters, repeat an action and keep unwanted passers-by out of frame. A location with a readable background is more useful than a spectacular one that makes blocking difficult. Walk through the scene before recording and look for collision, lighting changes, moving crowds and environmental effects that could break continuity between takes.
Dress the set for the camera
Place props and characters for the shot rather than for a player’s normal viewpoint. Check the edges of the frame for names, quest markers, unrelated characters and visual clutter. Keep the important action against a contrasting background and leave screen space where subtitles or titles will appear.

Rehearse movement and emotes
Rehearse the complete action at least once without recording. Establish who starts moving, where each character stops, when an emote begins and when the camera changes. Emotes have fixed timing, so a pause in the dialogue may need to match the animation rather than the other way around. If several actors must act together, use a verbal count or another repeatable cue.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Hide interface elements where the client permits
Remove or hide interface elements that would reveal the game as an unprepared play session. The exact controls and available options can change with client updates, so verify the current in-game settings on the installation you are using. Inspect a test recording at full size; a small icon that seems harmless in the viewport can be distracting in the final film.
Capture multiple takes
Record several takes of every shot, including a clean version before and after the action if possible. A take can fail because of an emote timing error, an unexpected character, a camera bump or an audio problem. Multiple performances let you cut around mistakes and avoid rebuilding the set for one missing reaction. Keep a simple take log with the shot identifier and a note about the best performance.
Protect continuity
Save screenshots or notes of character positions, facing directions, camera height and important prop placement. If you leave the location and return later, rebuild from those references instead of relying on memory. Match the order of actions, not just the starting pose: a character who has already drawn a weapon or crossed the room will not match an earlier shot.
Record cinematic footage with OBS Studio
Install the current OBS build
OBS Studio is free and open source. Its official download page lists version 32.2.2 and provides downloads for Windows, macOS and Linux. Use the build for your operating system and confirm that the game and microphone appear as available sources before the first real session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBuild scenes around the way you shoot
OBS can combine multiple scene sources, mix real-time video and audio, assign hotkeys and provide Studio Mode for previewing a change before it goes live. Create a small set of scenes that reflects your production: a game-only capture, a game-plus-microphone setup, and a test scene for checking levels. Name scenes and sources by purpose so you can identify them while concentrating on the game.

Separate picture and sound when possible
Record the game image and dialogue or narration as independently controllable sources. Separate tracks make it possible to replace a noisy line, shorten a pause or remove a microphone problem without discarding a usable picture take. A USB microphone can enable voiceover or live dialogue, but it is unnecessary for a silent or text-only machinima.
Use a repeatable capture routine
- Open the intended OBS scene and verify that the game source shows the correct client window.
- Check that the microphone and game audio meters respond without clipping or unexpected noise.
- Start a short test recording, perform one movement, stop, and inspect both the image and sound.
- Start the real take, announce the shot and take number if that will help you organize files, then perform the scene.
- Stop recording only after the action and any planned clean hold have finished.
OBS also exposes an API for extensions. You do not need an extension for a first film; the built-in scene, source, hotkey and Studio Mode features are sufficient for a conventional shoot. Add automation only when it removes a demonstrated repetition from your process.
Record dialogue, narration and music deliberately
Choose the sound strategy that fits the film
A silent film with subtitles has the simplest production requirements. Narration lets you capture the game performance first and record the voice later. Live dialogue can preserve timing between performers but is harder to clean when the game audio, room noise and microphone are captured together. Decide which approach you want before staging so actors know whether they are timing to spoken lines or to visual cues.

Keep clean material for the edit
When possible, record dialogue or narration separately from the game performance. A clean voice track gives you control over pauses, line replacements and levels in Resolve. Keep the original take as a reference even if you plan to replace it; the timing can help you synchronize a later recording.
Plan music and effects as rights-controlled assets
List every music track, sound effect and voice contribution in your project notes. Confirm that you are allowed to use each item in the intended distribution. If you cannot establish permission, remove the asset or replace it with material whose terms you can document. Sound design should support the scene, not create a publishing problem after the edit is complete.
Edit and finish in DaVinci Resolve
Organize before cutting
Copy recordings into folders by scene and shot, then label clips with take numbers. In Resolve, create bins that mirror that structure. Mark the strongest performance and any clean plates or room tone before you begin detailed trimming. This makes it easier to return to an alternate take without losing the story’s chronology.

Cut for readable action
Assemble the story in a straightforward order first. Use the wide shot to establish geography, then cut to reactions or details only when they add information. Trim the head and tail of each take, but leave enough movement for the viewer to understand why a cut occurs. If an emote begins before a line, preserve the visible preparation that makes the action legible.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Build the dialogue and music mix
Place dialogue or narration where the viewer can follow it without straining. Remove unusable pauses and replace a problem line with another take when the picture allows it. Bring music in after the spoken track is intelligible; a powerful score should not mask essential words or sound cues. Keep alternate versions of a scene until the pacing is settled.
Add titles, subtitles and color adjustments
Use titles and subtitles to clarify names, locations or lines that cannot be heard. Check them against the frame edges and keep enough contrast for the game’s background. Resolve can handle the editorial, sound, title, color and delivery stages in one project, which reduces unnecessary round-tripping between applications.
Know the current Resolve edition
Blackmagic’s support page lists Resolve 21 updates in 2026 and identifies a free edition supported through community forums. Features and requirements can change between releases, so confirm the version and edition installed on your system before designing a workflow around a particular effect.
Use Blender only when a shot needs it
Good reasons to round-trip a shot
Blender is useful for production-ready camera or object tracking, camera reconstruction, masking, match moves and compositing. Typical examples include attaching a graphic to a wall, removing an unwanted element, placing an effect that must follow a moving camera, or rebuilding a camera move for a 3D composite.
Avoid turning every shot into a 3D project
Export or render only the shots that need Blender. Finish ordinary cuts, dialogue, music, titles and color in Resolve. A selective round-trip keeps the project easier to revise and preserves the game capture as the authoritative picture for shots that need no additional treatment.

Track, composite and return a replacement
- Choose the exact shot and trim it to the portion that needs the effect.
- Bring that shot into Blender and solve the camera or object motion required by the composite.
- Create masks, tracked overlays or 3D elements, then inspect the result through the whole shot, including frames where the subject enters or leaves.
- Render a replacement clip with consistent frame rate, dimensions and alpha handling for the effect you created.
- Place the replacement above or in place of the original in Resolve and keep the source shot available for revisions.
Blender’s official visual-effects documentation covers these tracking, masking and compositing capabilities. Use the application because a shot requires them, not because a conventional edit feels less sophisticated.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose tools by job, not by novelty
| Tool | Capture control | Editing and finishing | Tracking and compositing | Operating systems or edition facts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Multiple scene sources, real-time video/audio capture and mixing, hotkeys and Studio Mode | Capture preparation rather than editorial finishing | API available for extensions; advanced VFX is outside its main role | Version 32.2.2 listed in 2026; Windows, macOS and Linux downloads |
| DaVinci Resolve | Receives recorded game and audio material | Selects, pacing, dialogue, music, titles, color and delivery | Use for the main edit; specialized tracking can be sent to Blender | Resolve 21 updates listed in 2026; free edition available with community-forum support |
| Blender | Not the starting point for recording the client | Best reserved for shot-level VFX rather than the whole edit | Camera/object tracking, camera reconstruction, masking and built-in compositing | Use selectively when a shot needs 3D or tracked work |
The combination is deliberately ordinary: OBS handles acquisition, Resolve handles editorial decisions, and Blender handles exceptional shots. That separation gives you more control than trying to force one application to perform every task.
Publishing and monetization: check Blizzard’s policy
Start with the non-commercial baseline
Blizzard’s current Video Policy says: “First and foremost, note that except as specifically provided herein, Blizzard Entertainment requires that the use of Blizzard Content must be limited to non-commercial purposes.” Treat that as the baseline for a machinima made with in-game footage. Read the current policy immediately before release because permissions and conditions can change.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Free viewing is a stated condition
The policy allows community productions to be distributed freely where viewers can watch without paying, subject to the policy’s other conditions. Do not put the film behind a paywall or make access contingent on a purchase unless the current policy expressly permits the arrangement.
Understand the sponsor-promotion limit
The policy limits sponsor promotion to 10 seconds total per production and requires the words “Sponsored By” to be displayed. If a sponsor message would exceed that total or omit the required wording, it does not fit the stated condition. Keep a timecoded copy of the sponsor segment so you can verify compliance during final review.
Do not assume platform monetization is automatically allowed
Advertising, subscriptions, tips and other revenue features can change the commercial character of a production. The stated policy baseline is non-commercial, with the specific sponsor-promotion condition above. Check the complete, current Blizzard policy and the rules of the platform where you will publish; if your plan falls outside the stated conditions, obtain appropriate permission or release the film without that monetization.
Troubleshoot the failures that cost the most time
The footage contains interface clutter
- Return to the client’s current interface and display settings and hide elements where the game permits.
- Re-record a clean plate or crop only if the crop does not damage composition.
- For a single persistent element, consider a carefully tracked mask in Blender rather than blurring the entire frame.
The performance cannot be repeated
- Use the shot list and take log to identify exactly what changed.
- Rebuild character positions and facing directions from screenshots or notes.
- Capture a new take plus a clean hold before and after the action so the edit has room to hide the mismatch.
Dialogue is noisy or mistimed
- Replace the line with a separately recorded take when the picture permits.
- Cut to a reaction, detail or subtitle while the replacement audio plays.
- If the film is silent or subtitle-driven, remove the unnecessary microphone track instead of trying to rescue it.
The edit feels slow
- Identify the first frame in each shot that communicates the intended action and remove uninformative lead-in.
- Use reactions and details only when they change the viewer’s understanding.
- Compare alternate takes for timing, not just image quality; the most polished take may not be the best-paced one.
A Blender composite breaks at the edges
- Check the camera solve where the subject enters, exits or passes behind an object.
- Refine masks on those transition frames instead of trusting a single clean frame.
- Render a short test and replace the shot in Resolve before committing to a long final render.
An addon or camera-control workflow stops working
WoW camera and model-viewer addons are version-sensitive. No authoritative compatibility matrix establishes a universally current recommendation, so verify your client version and the addon’s maintenance status before relying on one. If compatibility is uncertain, use the game client’s available controls and a repeatable manual staging process.
A repeatable first-project checklist
- Write a short beat sheet, dialogue draft, shot list and storyboard.
- Choose aspect ratio, frame rate, music sources and a silent, subtitle or narration plan.
- Scout and dress one controllable location.
- Rehearse actor positions, emotes, movement and camera timing.
- Hide interface elements where permitted and capture several takes per shot.
- Test OBS video, game audio and microphone sources before the real session.
- Log takes and organize recordings by scene and shot.
- Assemble the story in Resolve, then refine dialogue, music, titles and color.
- Send only tracking, masking, compositing or 3D-camera shots to Blender.
- Review every asset and the current Blizzard Video Policy before publishing.
This process produces a machinima through ordinary filmmaking decisions: clear staging, deliberate capture, disciplined editing and rights-aware release. The absence of generative AI is not a limitation; it simply means every performance, cut and effect is under your direct control.
