The safest locked-room run is short, deliberate and built around noise control. Put the single-use key in a Safe Pocket before moving, scout every approach and the nearest extraction, open the room only during a quiet window, search the highest-value containers first, and leave as soon as the area changes. Regular extraction controls broadcast a loud signal; a Raider Hatch is quieter but requires its own key. If Close Scrutiny is active, treat an apparently open key room as an ARC ambush risk rather than a free cache.
Why a locked room is dangerous even when the door is open
ARC Raiders combines two threats: mechanized ARC units and rival Raiders who can hear or observe the same opportunity. A locked room concentrates value, noise and player traffic in one small area. The key interaction itself may be quick, but searching containers takes several seconds and creates substantial sound. That gives an ARC patrol or another squad time to converge while you are inside an awkward doorway.
Noise is the risk you can manage most directly. Container searches advertise that someone is looting. Regular extraction controls also make a loud, blaring noise, so a successful room clear can still become a failed run if the exit is chosen without checking who can hear it. Your objective is therefore not simply to reach the room; it is to reduce the time between opening, taking the best items and reaching a viable escape route.

Prepare the run before you touch the lock
Protect the key immediately
Keys are documented as single-use consumables. Move the key into a Safe Pocket as soon as you obtain it. Safe Pocket contents survive elimination, unlike ordinary carried equipment, so a failed run does not automatically erase the resource you spent time finding. Do this before entering the room area, not after you have already attracted attention.

A single-use key should be treated as a limited attempt rather than a reason to force a bad fight. If the approach is covered by an ARC patrol, rival Raiders or an exposed extraction route, keep the key safe and leave. You can use it on a later run; you cannot recover the same spent key by waiting inside a contested room.
Choose the opportunity using six risk axes
Room rarity alone does not tell you whether the run is worthwhile. Compare each candidate against the following factors before committing:
| Axis | What to check | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Key rarity and cost | How difficult the key is to replace and whether it is single-use | A high-cost key deserves a cleaner approach and a safer extraction plan |
| Room location | Number of entrances, sightlines, cover and nearby choke points | More exits make it easier to disengage; a single doorway can trap you in a predictable position |
| ARC activity | Patrol routes, machine sounds and recent combat nearby | Mechanical attention can arrive while containers are being searched |
| Expected loot | Likely value of the room compared with the key and equipment you risk | Take the best return first instead of spending time emptying low-value containers |
| Extraction profile | Distance to the nearest extraction, its exposure and whether a Raider Hatch is available | A room with no quiet exit may be a poor trade even if its contents are excellent |
| Raider traffic | Recent shots, footsteps, open routes and locations associated with events | Human players can arrive from a direction that an ARC patrol cannot cover |
Room locations and rarities are documented across Dam Battlegrounds, Buried City, Spaceport, Blue Gate, Stella Montis and Riven Tides. Use that map knowledge to compare the six axes rather than assuming that the rarest room is always the best target. A room near an active event or a popular route may have a higher chance of third-party traffic than an equally valuable room in a quieter position.

Identify the nearest realistic exit while you are still outside the room. Note a primary route, a fallback route and the cover or turns that break a pursuer’s line of sight. Include the sound profile in the plan: normal extraction controls are loud, while Raider Hatches are quieter to use but require a Raider Hatch Key. Do not begin a long container search until you know where you will go when the area becomes noisy.
Scout the room and its approaches
Scouting is not a single glance at the door. Stop far enough away that you can listen without committing the key, then inspect the angles that could watch the interaction.

- Pause for audio. Separate ARC movement, weapon fire, footsteps and other activity from the normal map soundscape. A brief quiet interval is more valuable than opening during overlapping combat.
- Check every entrance and exit. Look for doors, windows, stairs, alleys and routes that can put a Raider behind you. If the room has only one practical exit, position yourself so you can leave without standing directly in the doorway.
- Read the sightlines. Identify windows, rooftops, long corridors and open ground that expose the lock or the first few steps of your retreat. Avoid beginning the interaction where another player can watch your back from a single fixed angle.
- Locate the extraction path. Verify that your planned route is not blocked by a patrol, active fight or terrain that forces you into the same lane as other players.
- Wait for a quiet window. If the area changes while you are scouting, reset the plan. A key interaction is not a deadline.
This approach also helps distinguish a room that is technically accessible from one that is tactically safe. During normal conditions, key-locked rooms are the targets you can open with the correct key. Other puzzle-locked spaces may remain inaccessible even if you are already nearby.
Open, search and leave without creating a trap
Use the doorway as a transition, not a hiding place
Keep an exit available while the lock is being used. Do not stand motionless in a predictable doorway after the interaction; that position gives an approaching Raider a clean shot and can funnel you into a machine patrol. Once the door is open, move far enough inside to avoid being silhouetted, but stay close enough to reverse direction if the outside route changes.

If the room has several entrances, choose the one that lets you see the greatest portion of your escape lane. If it has one entrance, pre-aim your retreat and avoid blocking yourself with a container, teammate or piece of cover. The goal is not to hold the room indefinitely. It is to take the highest-value items before attention arrives.
Search in value order
Container searches take several seconds and make substantial noise. Start with the container or item category that offers the best expected value, then reassess the area before opening anything else. This order gives you a useful partial payout if a patrol, gunfight or rival squad appears after the first search.
- Take the clearly valuable item first when it is immediately available.
- Skip low-value containers if the room is becoming active.
- Stop searching when the information you gathered outside is no longer valid.
- Keep enough movement time to reach your planned exit; do not begin a search that you cannot finish and escape from safely.
Control sound and information
Do not add unnecessary movement, shots or prolonged looting to the noise already produced by the key interaction and container searches. If an ARC patrol is audible, wait rather than competing with it. If rival Raiders are nearby, assume they may investigate a new sound even if you have not seen them. A room can be empty at the moment you open it and contested seconds later.

Choose the extraction method deliberately
| Extraction option | Known profile | When it fits | Main danger |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular extraction controls | Make a loud, blaring noise | Use only after checking the approach and accepting that the sound may draw both ARC and Raiders | Your position becomes easier to locate while you wait to leave |
| Raider Hatch | Quieter to use, but requires a Raider Hatch Key | Prefer when the hatch is reachable and the additional key cost is justified by a lower noise profile | You can spend another scarce key and still be exposed on the route to the hatch |
A quieter extraction is not invisible. Check the hatch route for patrols and players before leaving the room, and do not assume that a quiet activation compensates for loud searches you already completed. If the only available exit is a regular extraction, shorten the looting phase and approach it with the same scouting discipline used for the room.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Close Scrutiny changes the normal key-room rule
Close Scrutiny is a map-condition exception. Normally, key-locked rooms are accessible through their doors, while puzzle-locked rooms remain inaccessible. Under Close Scrutiny, key-locked rooms are normally open because their doors are open or removed. That removes the key interaction, but it does not remove the danger: the first Assessor pylon breach emits noise and spawns an aggravated ARC swarm.
Use a response plan for the first pylon breach
Treat the first breach as the moment the area can become hostile. The documented countermeasures are a Li’l Smoke Grenade or Smoke Grenade used before breaching, a Lure Grenade thrown opposite your escape route after looting, and Photoelectric Cloak for a clean withdrawal.
- Before breaching: choose the exit lane and have the smoke option ready. Deploy the Li’l Smoke Grenade or Smoke Grenade before the breach if you need to obscure the initial movement.
- During the breach: keep the escape route open and avoid turning the pylon interaction into a prolonged standstill. The first breach is the known noise-and-swarm trigger.
- After looting: throw a Lure Grenade away from your intended escape route. The purpose is to pull attention in the opposite direction, not to create another fight near the exit.
- For a clean withdrawal: use Photoelectric Cloak when available and leave immediately rather than continuing to search once the swarm response begins.
Because Close Scrutiny changes door access, do not mistake an open entrance for a low-risk room. The swarm trigger and the value of the loot can still attract other players, and any extraction noise remains relevant after the room has been searched.
Locked Gate is a special, high-traffic case
Locked Gate does not follow the simple one-key interaction. Four codes must be inserted into terminals. The area is popular during raids, and its underground tunnels offer above-average loot and better blueprint odds. Those advantages also make it a predictable destination for rival Raiders.

Approach Locked Gate as a staged operation. Confirm that you have the required codes, identify the terminals and the route through the underground section, and check the extraction path before the first insertion. Avoid completing one terminal and then wandering around exposed while looking for the next. If traffic rises, preserve the codes and reposition rather than forcing the sequence in a crowded area.
The tunnel loot can justify the extra preparation, but it should not change the core rule: search the most valuable containers first, leave when the area becomes active and treat regular extraction noise as a potential summons for both machines and players.
What to bring for a locked-room run
- The correct key: verify the room and map before deployment, then move the key into a Safe Pocket immediately.
- A planned extraction resource: carry a Raider Hatch Key only when the quieter hatch route is part of your intended plan; otherwise identify the regular extraction and accept its noise.
- Smoke: a Li’l Smoke Grenade or Smoke Grenade is a documented option before the first pylon breach during Close Scrutiny.
- A Lure Grenade: use it after looting to draw attention away from the escape lane when an ARC response is unavoidable.
- Photoelectric Cloak: reserve it for a clean withdrawal when Close Scrutiny or another forced ARC response makes concealment necessary.
- Enough time and space to retreat: do not fill the run with an unnecessary search that leaves no movement window after the room becomes noisy.
The list is intentionally focused on the documented problems: key loss, noise, ARC attention and extraction. A larger loadout is not automatically safer if it encourages you to stay longer for marginal containers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.React to the four ways a run can turn bad
An ARC patrol arrives before the search is complete
Stop opening containers. Use the exit lane you checked during scouting and leave the marginal loot behind. If Close Scrutiny is active and the pylon breach has already triggered the swarm, use the smoke, lure or Photoelectric Cloak response appropriate to your route instead of trying to out-loot the response.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRival Raiders appear outside
Do not assume the locked room protects you. Move away from the predictable doorway, keep an alternate exit available and avoid creating a prolonged exchange over low-value containers. If the route to extraction is watched, wait for a genuine opening or abandon the room and preserve the key for another attempt.

The extraction area becomes contested
Recheck whether the loud regular extraction is still viable. A blaring control can reveal your position to enemies who were not previously involved. If a Raider Hatch is available and you possess its key, compare the quieter activation against the danger of crossing to it; otherwise choose cover and a fallback route before starting the regular control.
You lose the run after opening the room
The Safe Pocket protects the key placed there before the attempt. Ordinary carried equipment does not receive that protection, which is why the key should never remain in standard inventory during the approach or search.
How to compare rooms across the six documented maps
Room locations and rarities are documented for Dam Battlegrounds, Buried City, Spaceport, Blue Gate, Stella Montis and Riven Tides. The useful comparison is not a universal ranking; it is a route decision made from the map state at the moment you arrive.
| Question | Low-risk answer | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Can you protect the key? | It is already in a Safe Pocket | The key is still in ordinary carried equipment |
| Can you watch the approaches? | Multiple entrances, usable cover and a visible retreat | One exposed doorway or a long open lane |
| Is ARC activity manageable? | No nearby patrol or escalating machine audio | Patrol sounds, recent combat or a forced pylon breach |
| Is the loot worth the time? | You can take the highest-value container first | You need a long search for uncertain marginal items |
| Can you leave quietly? | A Raider Hatch route is available and its key cost is acceptable | Only a loud regular extraction is reachable through exposed ground |
| Is player traffic acceptable? | No signs of a raid crowd or active event route | Repeated footsteps, shots or a known popular objective |
This framework lets you use documented room rarity without treating rarity as a guarantee of safety. A common room with two exits and a quiet hatch can be a better run than a premium room beside a loud extraction and a popular event.
A compact decision rule
Open the room only when the key is protected, the approaches are understood, the extraction route is chosen and the area has a quiet window. Search the best container first, keep the doorway from becoming a predictable firing position and leave at the first meaningful change in ARC or Raider activity. Under Close Scrutiny, prepare smoke, a lure and Photoelectric Cloak for the pylon-triggered swarm, and remember that an open key room can still be the loudest trap on the map.
