When a Windows security patch will not install, start with the least disruptive sequence: record the exact error code and KB number, back up your files, restart the PC, verify the internet connection and free space, run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter, restart again, and check for updates. If that fails, repair system files, check update services, reset the update cache, and only then consider temporarily removing conflicting security software or uninstalling a recently installed quality update.
The error code usually points to the right branch. A damaged cache, disabled service, incompatible driver, missing permissions, low storage, and component-store corruption require different fixes, so avoid repeatedly clicking “Try again” without identifying the code.
Prepare safely before changing Windows Update
Windows Update changes protected system files. Preparation prevents a failed repair from becoming a data-loss incident.

- Open Settings > Windows Update and write down the complete error code, the update’s KB number, and whether the failure occurs during download, installation, or restart.
- If the message names a driver, feature, or language pack, note that detail too. It can distinguish a driver conflict from a damaged update cache.
Back up personal files
Copy documents, photographs, browser exports, and other irreplaceable data to a separate drive or approved backup service. A USB flash drive can hold a temporary backup or recovery media when the internal disk is nearly full; it is not itself a Windows Update repair tool.

Check the basics
- Use a stable internet connection. If possible, avoid a captive-portal network such as hotel or café Wi-Fi.
- Connect the laptop to power and disconnect unnecessary USB devices, docks, and external storage while troubleshooting.
- Sign in with an administrator account, or have administrator credentials available. Cache resets, service changes, and system-file repairs require elevation.
- Check Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10). Microsoft lists at least 16 GB of free space for a 32-bit upgrade and 20 GB for a 64-bit upgrade in its 2026 support guidance. A routine security patch may need less, but low free space can still prevent extraction and rollback.
Use the error code to choose the right fix
These codes are Microsoft’s documented indications, not absolute diagnoses. Confirm the code on your own device before applying a more invasive remedy.

Run Microsoft’s first-line troubleshooting sequence
1. Restart and check Windows Update again
- Save your work and choose Start > Power > Restart. A restart clears pending installer state and reloads update services.
- After signing in, open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- If the same code appears, continue rather than repeatedly retrying the identical operation.
2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft’s first-line procedure is to run the troubleshooter, restart, and check again.
- On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any recommended correction, restart when prompted, and return to Settings > Windows Update to check again.
The troubleshooter can resolve common configuration and service problems, but it cannot repair every damaged component store or incompatible driver.
Check services when updates will not start or download
A disabled Windows Update service commonly produces 0x80070422. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) handles much of the download work, and Cryptographic Services validates signed packages.

- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. Approve the administrator prompt. - Find Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service, and Cryptographic Services.
- For each service, check that it is not disabled. If it is stopped, right-click it and choose Start. If it is already running, choose Restart.
- Close Services, restart Windows, and run Check for updates again.
If an organization manages the computer, a policy may intentionally control these services. Contact the administrator instead of changing policy-managed settings.
Repair Windows system files
Use system-file repair when the error points to component corruption, particularly after a failed upgrade or when 0x800f0922 continues after freeing space. Run these commands from an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Right-click Start and choose Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to finish. DISM repairs the Windows component store that the system-file checker relies on. - Run
sfc /scannow. SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces corrupted copies when possible. - Restart the PC, then check Windows Update. If either command reports that it could not complete, record the exact message before trying another repair.
Do not close the administrator window or power off while either scan is running. These commands can take significantly longer than an ordinary application repair because they inspect and service the operating-system image.

Microsoft labels the following as advanced steps for people comfortable with the command line and administrator permissions. Renaming the folders makes Windows create clean replacements; it does not delete your personal files.

Command-line reset
- Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Stop the services that can hold update files open:
net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc- Rename the two update data folders:
ren C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
ren C:WindowsSystem32catroot2 Catroot2.old- Start the services again:
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv- Restart Windows and select Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates.
If a net stop command says the service is not running, continue. If a rename reports that a file is in use, restart Windows and repeat the procedure before opening other applications. Do not delete the renamed folders immediately; keeping them temporarily gives you a rollback point if another diagnostic step needs their contents.
Resolve driver, storage, and security-software conflicts
Driver failures: 0xC1900101
Disconnect nonessential peripherals such as printers, storage adapters, and docking hardware. In Device Manager, inspect devices with warning icons and install a compatible driver supplied for your exact Windows edition and hardware. If the problem began immediately after a driver change, use the device’s Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver option when available, then restart.
Avoid removing a driver you need for network access or storage unless you have an offline replacement and a recovery plan. If the error names a specific device, address that device first rather than resetting all drivers.

Use Settings > System > Storage to remove temporary files, empty the Recycle Bin, and move large personal files to a separate drive. Keep the backup made before troubleshooting. An external USB flash drive can provide temporary space for a backup or recovery media, but Windows still needs free space on the system volume to stage an update.

Third-party antivirus and security software
Microsoft identifies third-party antivirus or security software as a possible update conflict. Use this branch only after the built-in troubleshooter, service checks, and system repair have failed.
- Confirm that you have the product’s reinstall instructions and activation details.
- Follow Microsoft’s direction to temporarily disable or remove the software, using its own documented uninstall method rather than deleting program folders.
- Restart and install the update.
- Re-enable or reinstall protection immediately after the update succeeds. Do not browse or handle sensitive data while protection is disabled.
If the update still fails with security software removed, reinstall protection and pursue the error-code branch instead of leaving the computer unprotected.

Stuck at 0%
Zero percent often means Windows has not begun transferring or staging the package. Verify internet access, confirm that Windows Update and BITS are running, check available storage, and run the troubleshooter. A metered connection, proxy, VPN, or security product can also interrupt downloads; test the connection without changing unrelated network settings permanently.

Stuck at 100%
One hundred percent can represent final verification, cleanup, or a pending restart rather than a completed installation. Keep the computer connected to power and allow Windows to finish its current operation. If Windows returns to the desktop but the update remains pending, restart once and check the update history. If the failure code returns, use the code-specific procedure above instead of repeatedly forcing shutdowns.

When a forced shutdown is unavoidable
If the device is completely unresponsive and cannot reach the sign-in screen or recovery controls, a forced power-off may be the only option, but it carries a risk of an incomplete update. After rebooting, back up files, note any automatic rollback message, and run the troubleshooter before attempting another installation.
Roll back a recently installed update safely
If failures began immediately after an update and Windows will not boot normally or cannot complete repairs, Windows Recovery Environment can uninstall the latest quality update. Microsoft warns that removing a security update reduces protection, so treat this as a recovery measure, not a routine fix.
- Open Settings > System > Recovery on Windows 11, or the equivalent recovery page in Windows 10, and choose Advanced startup > Restart now. You can also reach Windows Recovery Environment after repeated failed starts.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
- Choose Uninstall latest quality update and follow the on-screen confirmation.
- After Windows starts, back up files, reconnect required security protection, and check Windows Update for a corrected package or further instructions.
Do not choose an update rollback merely because installation is slow. First distinguish a genuinely broken boot or newly introduced failure from a normal installation that needs time to finish.
Windows 10 support status in 2026
Microsoft’s support notice states that free Windows 10 software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 computer may continue to run after that date, but a failed security-patch installation is no longer just a temporary update glitch: the operating system is outside the period of free security servicing.
After recovering the device, assess migration to a supported Windows 11 installation that meets Microsoft’s hardware and edition requirements. Do not assume that resetting the cache or reinstalling an old Windows 10 update restores ongoing security coverage.
Escalate when the standard sequence does not work
Seek qualified support when any of the following applies:
- The same error returns after a service check, system-file repair, and cache reset.
- DISM or SFC reports an unrepaired component and the PC shows boot, storage, or filesystem symptoms.
- The computer is managed by an employer or school and update services or policies are locked.
- The failed update is a security update on a production or regulated device where rollback would create unacceptable exposure.
- Windows Recovery Environment cannot start, or uninstalling the latest quality update leaves the machine unable to boot.
Give the technician the exact error code, KB number, Windows edition, recent driver or security-software changes, available free space, and the steps already attempted. That information prevents repeating destructive or irrelevant fixes.
