Stop charging and intensive use, move the phone to a cool, ventilated place, and let it return to a normal temperature. Then check for battery damage, review battery usage, restart, install official OxygenOS and app updates, and test with a known-good manufacturer-approved charger and cable. OnePlus specifies normal operation at 0°C–35°C and charging at 5°C–35°C. Persistent heat during idle or light use, rapid drain after those checks, or any swelling, leakage, discoloration, distortion, crack or unusual odor warrants OnePlus service rather than more troubleshooting.
First, decide whether the phone is safe to use
A warm phone during a demanding task is different from a battery that is becoming dangerously hot. If the device is charging, disconnect it. Stop gaming, recording video, navigation and other intensive activity. Remove it from direct sun and place it on a hard, non-insulating surface with airflow. Do not put it in a refrigerator or freezer; condensation can damage electronics.
Without squeezing, opening or probing the phone, look for signs of a damaged battery or enclosure:

- Swelling, a raised back cover or a screen lifting from the frame
- Discoloration, leakage, smoke or an unusual chemical odor
- A cracked body or other physical damage near the battery
- Heat that is extreme, rapidly worsening or present while the phone is idle
OnePlus safety guidance says to discontinue use immediately and contact customer support for high temperature, discoloration, distortion or leakage. It also says to stop using a cracked or damaged product and contact a OnePlus Service Center. Do not open, puncture, crush or modify the battery. If any warning sign is present, move away from the heat and arrange service; back up data only if the phone is cool and safe to handle.

Temperature limits that matter while charging
The OnePlus Phone Safety Guide (2024) specifies these ranges:

These are operating and charging specifications, not a promise that every phone will feel equally cool. Ambient temperature, case insulation, signal strength, workload and battery condition all affect the heat you feel. Keep the phone ventilated, remove heat sources and never cover it with bedding, clothing or another insulating material while it charges.
Why a OnePlus phone overheats and loses battery quickly
An app or process is staying active
A newly installed or updated app can keep the processor, display, location services, camera or network connection active. A continuously active app can therefore produce both symptoms: sustained heat and a high battery-usage ranking. A one-time burst during a game or camera session is a different pattern from drain that continues at idle.
Charging conditions are adding heat
Charging naturally produces heat. Direct sunlight, a warm car, a thick insulating case, intensive gaming or video use during charging, and a damaged or unsuitable accessory can raise it further. OnePlus recommends a manufacturer-approved charger and data cable. Flash charging may be unavailable outside the stated temperature boundary, so a lower charging rate in a cold or hot environment can be protective behavior.
The battery has worn with age
OnePlus states: “The battery can be charged and discharged hundreds of times at least, but it will eventually wear out.” This is a lifecycle statement, not a universal replacement threshold or a guaranteed number of years. If the phone drains rapidly during light use after app, temperature and accessory checks, age-related wear becomes more likely.

There may be a hardware fault
Persistent idle heat, rapid drain after physical damage, charging that repeatedly stops or becomes unusually hot, swelling, leakage or distortion should be treated as a service issue. Official material does not establish one battery-health percentage that applies to every OnePlus model, nor does it establish that a particular OxygenOS release causes overheating across all models.
Fix overheating and rapid drain in a safe sequence
1. Cool the phone before inspecting settings
- Stop charging and intensive use.
- Remove direct sunlight and other heat sources.
- Set the phone on a hard, ventilated surface. Do not cover it with bedding or place it in a refrigerator or freezer.
- Wait until it is comfortable to handle before opening Settings or attempting another charge.
Continuing to test a hot device can make the original cause harder to identify and can add unnecessary stress to the battery.

Inspect the back, screen edges and charging area without flexing the phone. Swelling, a lifted panel, leakage, discoloration, distortion, smoke, an unusual odor or a cracked product changes the response: stop using it and contact OnePlus support or an authorized service center. Do not attempt a self-repair or puncture the enclosure to “release” a swollen battery.
3. Confirm a suitable charging environment
- Charge only when the ambient conditions are within 5°C–35°C.
- Keep the phone out of direct sun and away from heaters, hot dashboards and other heat sources.
- Leave airflow around the phone; do not charge under a pillow, blanket or clothing.
- Avoid intensive gaming, long video recording, camera use or other sustained workloads while charging.
If the phone is hot only during charging, this step helps separate environmental heat from an idle software or battery problem.
4. Check the charger, cable and connector
Use a manufacturer-approved OnePlus charger and USB-C data cable. A compatible OnePlus USB-C charging cable is the appropriate replacement category, but verify the exact phone model, charging/data standard, regional plug and voltage requirements, and seller authenticity before buying. Do not assume that a cable that fits physically supports the phone’s intended charging behavior.

Inspect both ends of the cable and the phone’s connector for damage or compacted debris. Power the phone down if practical and use only non-metallic methods recommended by the manufacturer to remove loose debris; never insert a metal object into the port. If a different approved cable and charger solve the heat or drain while the original combination does not, retire the suspect accessory rather than continuing to use it.

After it has cooled, restart normally. A restart clears a process that became stuck without requiring you to disable system services blindly. Observe whether the phone becomes hot again before opening several demanding apps or reconnecting every accessory.
6. Install official system and app updates
Open Settings and use its search field for system update, software update or OxygenOS update; labels and menu locations vary by model, region and OxygenOS version. Install updates offered by the phone through official channels. Then update apps through the device’s official app store. Keep the phone cool and connected to reliable power during an update, but stop if it becomes abnormally hot.
A symptom that began immediately after an update is useful timing information, not proof that the release is defective. Record the exact model and OxygenOS build and include that information when contacting support.
7. Find the app using the most battery
In Settings, use the search field for battery, battery usage or app battery usage. Open the battery-usage view and inspect the ranking for an app that is unexpectedly active or consuming power continuously. Because menu labels differ, use the search result that leads to the phone’s own battery statistics rather than following a model-specific path from another device.

Interpret the list in context:
- A game, camera, navigation or video app can legitimately rank high after you used it heavily.
- An app you installed or updated just before the problem, or one active while the screen was off, deserves closer attention.
- Core Android or OxygenOS services should not be disabled simply because they appear in the list; they may be required for calls, updates, security or charging.
For an app you recognize, first close it, install its update, and review its in-app background, location and notification settings. If the drain continues, restrict background activity using the controls your OxygenOS build provides or uninstall the app. Make one change at a time so you can identify which action helped. Do not remove an unfamiliar system component solely from its name.
8. Retest under light, repeatable use
After the restart, updates and app check, use the phone for a while with normal brightness, ordinary radios and the same charger and room conditions. Avoid a demanding game or long camera session during the test. Note whether heat appears while the screen is off, only during charging, only in a particular app, or across all light use.
Record the model, OxygenOS build, charger and cable, approximate room temperature, the time the symptom starts and the top battery-usage entry. This information gives support a reproducible pattern instead of a general report that the phone “gets hot.”

When battery wear or a hardware fault is more likely
Battery capacity declines through normal use. The OnePlus lifecycle statement confirms eventual wear but does not define a universal replacement percentage, cycle count or age. Consider service evaluation when all of the following are true:
- The phone is operating and charging within the documented temperature ranges.
- You have removed direct heat and insulating materials.
- An approved charger and cable are in good condition.
- The phone has been restarted and updated.
- No recognized app explains the battery-usage ranking.
- Drain or heat persists during idle or light use.
Physical damage overrides this checklist: do not continue testing a damaged or swollen device. OnePlus service can determine whether the battery, charging circuit or another component needs attention. Do not infer a diagnosis from a single temperature reading or from a battery percentage that is not defined for your exact model and software build.

How to charge a hot OnePlus phone safely
Do not charge while the phone is hot from gaming, sunlight or a high-temperature environment. Let it cool in ventilation first, then charge between 5°C and 35°C with the manufacturer-approved charger and data cable. Keep the phone uncovered and avoid intensive use during the session. If flash charging does not activate below 15°C or above 35°C, allow the device to return to the specified range rather than trying to force the feature.
Stop the session if heat rises abnormally, charging repeatedly disconnects, the connector smells or the enclosure changes shape. Continued use in that state is not a normal charging inconvenience; it is a reason to seek service.

- Whether the phone heats while idle, during charging, or only in a named app
- Approximate ambient temperature and whether direct sun or an insulating case was involved
- Charger and cable model, approval status and condition
- The top entries in Settings’ battery-usage view
- When the symptom began and whether it followed an app or system update
- Any swelling, leakage, discoloration, distortion, crack or unusual odor
Ask whether the device qualifies for battery diagnostics or replacement. Availability, service procedures and warranty outcomes depend on the model and region, so support must confirm the applicable option.
