You can often make an Android phone last longer without turning off notifications by first reducing screen and input power use, then checking which apps are draining the battery. Keep time-sensitive apps available in the background, and use Battery Saver or Adaptive Battery with care: both can limit background activity, so some alerts may arrive late. Android menus and behavior vary by device and version.
Which changes save power without directly limiting alerts?
Start with settings that reduce power used while you interact with the phone. They do not inherently silence app notifications, so they are a sensible first step if alerts need to remain timely.
Shorten screen-on time and lower brightness
- Reduce screen timeout. A shorter timeout turns the display off sooner when you stop using the phone.
- Lower screen brightness. Use the lowest level that remains comfortable to read. Automatic brightness can adjust the display for surrounding light if you find it useful.
Look in Settings for “Display” or search Settings for “screen timeout,” “brightness,” or “automatic brightness.” The precise labels and menu path depend on the phone maker and Android version; Google notes that some general battery steps are available only on Android 13 and newer. Turn off keyboard sounds or vibration if you do not need them
Keyboard sound and vibration use power each time you type. If you are comfortable without them, disable them in the keyboard’s settings. Search Settings for “keyboard” or open the keyboard settings from the keyboard app; the location varies by device and keyboard.

How do you identify apps that are using too much battery?
Check battery usage before restricting apps. The usage screen can help you distinguish an app that is consuming unusually much power from one whose background activity is important to you. Search Settings for “Battery” or “battery usage”; phone makers organize the screens differently.
- Open the phone’s battery-usage screen and review which apps account for the most use.
- Consider what each high-use app does and whether its background activity or alerts are time-sensitive.
- For an app that is not important to keep active, use the available battery or background-use controls to restrict it, if your phone offers them.
- Leave messaging, safety, work, and other time-sensitive apps unrestricted unless you are willing to risk delayed alerts. If a notification starts arriving late after a change, undo the restriction for that app and check whether its alerts return to normal.
Google recommends restricting apps that use a lot of battery, but background limits can affect timely notifications. Make that decision app by app rather than applying aggressive restrictions across the board. The precise controls and their effects differ among Android devices.

What do Battery Saver and Adaptive Battery do to notifications?
These features can help extend time between charges, but they involve a trade-off: a phone may do less work in the background, which can affect when some apps deliver alerts.

Use Battery Saver deliberately
Battery Saver is most useful when charge is low or you need the phone to last until you can recharge. Before enabling it, consider which apps must alert you promptly. If an important notification is delayed while Battery Saver is active, turn the mode off and check whether that resolves the issue. Avoid assuming its behavior is identical on every Android phone: the controls and effects depend on the device.

For a schedule or automatic activation, first decide when you are willing to accept possible background delays. Search Settings for “Battery Saver” or “Battery” to find the available controls; no single menu path applies to all manufacturers.
Understand Pixel Adaptive Battery and app optimization
Google’s Pixel guidance warns that Adaptive Battery may reduce performance and delay notifications. Google also says that turning off battery optimization for an app can let it run more while unused and increase battery use. If a Pixel app’s alerts are late, review its optimization setting rather than disabling notifications themselves. Some Pixel instructions apply only on Android 14 and newer; check the device’s version and the relevant Pixel Adaptive Battery and battery-optimization guidance.

What should you do when the battery is low right now?
Reduce activities that keep the screen, radios, location services, or processor working hard. Google lists long periods of navigation, video, graphics-heavy gaming, hotspot use, GPS, streaming, and calls while moving among activities that can consume battery.
- Pause streaming, video, or demanding games when they are not essential.
- Stop using a hotspot when no device needs the connection.
- Limit navigation or GPS use when you can safely do so.
- Reduce screen use and brightness rather than disabling notifications as a first response.
Turning off mobile network, Bluetooth, or Location may save power in some circumstances, but these are situational choices, not routine requirements. Google notes that some apps and features will not work when Location is off. Before toggling a connection or service, consider whether a needed alert, call, navigation function, or connected device depends on it.

Can heat or charging habits affect battery life?
Heat is important even when the phone is idle. Google Android Help states: “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use.” Google also warns that heat can damage the battery. Keep the phone from becoming hot where practical, and do not treat a battery drain problem as only a settings issue.
Google recommends using the power adapter supplied with the phone. Its general Android guidance also recommends occasionally letting the battery fall below 10% and then charging it fully overnight; that is a charge-care recommendation, not a published performance statistic or a promise of longer runtime. For device-specific charging advice, follow the phone manufacturer’s instructions. Pixel-specific battery information is available in Google’s Pixel battery guidance.
How can you troubleshoot delayed notifications?
If alerts become late after a battery change, identify what changed before loosening every battery setting. That keeps the trade-off limited to the app or mode that is causing the problem.
- Check whether Battery Saver is on. Turn it off temporarily and see whether the expected alert arrives normally.
- Review the affected app’s battery controls. If you restricted its background use or, on Pixel, changed its optimization, restore the less restrictive setting for that app.
- Consider Adaptive Battery on Pixel. Google says it may delay notifications; account for that behavior when deciding whether to keep it enabled for your use.
- Check the exact device instructions. Search Settings for “Battery,” or consult the manufacturer’s support site. Android menus and notification behavior are not identical across Pixel, Samsung, and other phones.
Do not treat a delayed alert as proof that notifications were disabled. Battery controls can defer background work while notification permissions remain on. The remedy is usually to review the relevant mode or app restriction and choose the balance between runtime and prompt alerts that suits that app.
A practical order for balancing runtime and alerts
- Shorten screen timeout, reduce brightness, and remove keyboard sound or vibration you do not need.
- Review battery usage and restrict only high-drain apps whose background activity is not important.
- Keep time-sensitive apps available, and test their alerts after changing battery controls.
- Use Battery Saver when the remaining charge makes the possible background delays an acceptable trade-off.
- When charge is critically low, reduce heavy screen, hotspot, GPS, navigation, streaming, or gaming use before turning off services that important apps rely on.
Google’s broad Android instructions are not a promise of identical settings on every phone: some steps depend on Android version and manufacturer. Pixel guidance is device-specific, and some of its steps require Android 14 or newer. When a menu or control is missing, search Settings for “Battery” or use the manufacturer’s support instructions rather than assuming the same path applies to another model.
