You do not switch optical image stabilization (OIS) on with a software setting. OIS is a physical mechanism in a camera module, so a Galaxy phone with an OIS-equipped lens uses it automatically in supported camera modes. A phone without that hardware cannot gain OIS through an update or menu toggle.
For stronger correction while walking or moving quickly, open Camera, choose Video, and tap the SuperSteady hand icon when it is available. SuperSteady is electronic action-video stabilization, not a replacement for OIS, and it can reduce low-light quality, crop the view, and disable some recording options.
What OIS does on a Galaxy phone
Optical image stabilization moves optical elements or the image sensor to counter small hand movements before the image is recorded. Because the correction happens in the camera hardware, there is no universal “OIS” switch in the Camera app. If the lens is designed with OIS, the mechanism normally operates automatically whenever Samsung allows that lens and recording mode to use it.

OIS is most useful for ordinary handheld shooting: static subjects, family clips, travel scenes, and gradual camera movement. It helps reduce the blur caused by hand tremor and makes normal video less jittery without requiring an action-specific mode. It does not freeze a subject that is moving rapidly, and it cannot remove large movements caused by running, impacts, or abrupt direction changes on its own.

Samsung’s 2026 A-series guide identifies the following mid-range examples with OIS on their main camera:
| Phone | Main-camera specification listed by Samsung | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy A17 5G | 50MP main camera with OIS | OIS is available through the supported main-camera modes. |
| Galaxy A26 5G | 50MP main camera with OIS | OIS is available through the supported main-camera modes. |
| Galaxy A37 5G | 50MP main camera with OIS | OIS is available through the supported main-camera modes. |
| Galaxy A57 5G | 50MP main camera with OIS | OIS is available through the supported main-camera modes. |
These are examples, not a guarantee that every phone sold under the same family name has identical cameras. Country, carrier edition, firmware and One UI version can change the available lenses and controls. Check the exact model number and the regional specification for your phone before treating a feature list as universal.
Check whether your exact Galaxy model has OIS
Identify the model and software
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone and note the model name and model number. The model number is more useful than a shortened retail name when two regional versions exist.
- Install any official camera or system update offered for that device, then reopen the Camera app. Menu names can change with One UI updates.
Use the model number when consulting Samsung’s specification page for your country or the documentation supplied with the phone. Look specifically for OIS on the main or wide camera; an OIS-equipped main lens does not imply that every rear or front lens is optically stabilized.

Open Camera and select Photo or Video. A missing SuperSteady icon does not prove that the phone lacks OIS, because SuperSteady is a separate electronic mode and may be hidden by the selected resolution, lens, HDR10+ setting or software version. Conversely, a stabilization icon does not prove that the lens has OIS. The specification for the exact regional model is the reliable way to establish the hardware.

Turn on SuperSteady for moving video
Samsung’s documented path is short:
- Open the Camera app.
- Tap Video.
- Tap the SuperSteady icon, shown as a hand or stabilization symbol, when it appears.
Samsung describes SuperSteady as “an action camera function that allows you to shoot steady videos when moving at high speed.” It is intended for walking, running and other active shots rather than every recording. The icon may not appear until the app is in Video mode, and its availability can change with the selected lens, resolution or other recording options.
If the icon is not visible
- Confirm that the mode selector is on Video, not Photo, Portrait video or another camera mode.
- Return to the standard rear-camera view and try the main lens at 1x. Some lenses and zoom levels do not support the function.
- Open the video-resolution controls and try a supported QHD or FHD setting. Samsung documents SuperSteady operation in QHD/FHD, while individual models may expose only a subset of those choices.
- Turn off HDR10+ video if it is enabled. Samsung documents HDR10+ incompatibility with SuperSteady.
- Close and reopen Camera after changing the settings. If the control remains absent, that combination of model, lens, resolution and firmware may not support it.
OIS, Video stabilization and SuperSteady compared
The labels describe different layers of correction. A phone can use more than one layer, but the Camera app decides which combinations are allowed.
| Control or mode | Primary mechanism | Best use | Important trade-offs and availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| OIS in normal Photo/Video | Physical optical correction in an equipped camera module | General handheld photos and video, especially when you want the normal field of view | Automatic when the supported lens and mode are active. It cannot be added to a model that lacks the hardware. |
| Video stabilization toggle | Electronic/software correction | Extra smoothing for ordinary video when the Camera app exposes the option | Availability and label vary by model, One UI version, resolution and lens. Electronic correction can alter the framing. |
| SuperSteady | Stronger electronic action-video correction | Walking or faster movement in bright conditions | Samsung documents QHD/FHD operation. It is incompatible with HDR10+, can reduce shutter speed, may add low-light noise or fluorescent-light banding, and can crop the view. |
For a normal handheld clip on an OIS-equipped Galaxy, start with standard Video. Add the ordinary Video stabilization control if the app offers it and the framing remains acceptable. Select SuperSteady only when movement is the priority and there is enough light.
When SuperSteady is the right choice
Use it for active movement in good light
SuperSteady’s stronger electronic correction needs image information to analyze and reframe each frame. Outdoor daylight, a brightly lit room or another high-light scene gives it the best chance of producing clean footage. Keep your grip relaxed, hold the phone with both hands and walk with shorter, softer steps; software cannot fully compensate for a sharp impact or a rapidly swinging arm.

Expect lower quality in dim scenes
Samsung warns that SuperSteady may reduce shutter speeds. In low light, that can make moving subjects blur and can produce visible image noise. Fluorescent lighting may also create banding. If the clip looks grainy, smeared or striped, add light or switch back to normal Video with the phone’s OIS and, where available, ordinary electronic Video stabilization.
Allow room around a close subject
Samsung cautions that SuperSteady can produce blur at close distances or when the camera is set to the 0.6x view. Samsung recommends leaving about one metre between the phone and the subject for this mode. Treat that as a practical shooting guideline rather than a universal optical limit: the exact result depends on the scene, lighting and phone model. If a close subject is soft at 0.6x, move back, use the 1x view and reframe instead of forcing SuperSteady.
Why video can still shake when stabilization is enabled
The selected lens or mode is not stabilized in the same way
OIS is tied to a particular camera module. Switching from the main 1x camera to an ultra-wide, telephoto, front camera or a digital zoom level may change the available hardware and software correction. A mode that hides the stabilization control is not necessarily malfunctioning; it may simply not support that combination.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Electronic correction changes the framing
Electronic stabilization needs spare pixels around the recorded frame so it can shift the crop while correcting motion. The resulting field of view can be narrower than an unstabilized clip, especially in SuperSteady. If the phone appears to “zoom in,” compare the framing before recording rather than judging stabilization by the preview alone.

Large movement exceeds the system’s correction range
OIS is designed for small hand tremor, while electronic modes smooth a moving camera within a finite range. Running, turning quickly, tapping the phone, or holding it one-handed at arm’s length can exceed that range. Use two hands, brace an elbow against your body, or support the phone on a stable surface.
Low light creates blur that stabilization cannot remove
Stabilization corrects camera movement; it does not make a moving person sharp when the exposure requires a slow shutter. More light, a stationary subject or normal Video instead of SuperSteady may produce a cleaner result.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
Work through these checks in order so you change one variable at a time:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Reset the starting point. In Camera, choose the rear main camera, Video, 1x, and a standard resolution. Record a few seconds while standing still, then while walking slowly.
- Check the icon. If SuperSteady is available, test it in the same lighting and compare the two clips. If it is absent, continue with the supported standard mode rather than assuming OIS is broken.
- Remove conflicts. Turn off HDR10+ and try another supported QHD/FHD resolution. Recheck after changing one option.
- Improve the light. Move outdoors or add an even light source. Avoid judging SuperSteady from a dark room or a fluorescent-lit scene.
- Change the distance and lens. For blur at 0.6x or close range, step back to roughly one metre or more and use 1x. Do not use a digital zoom level as a substitute for a supported lens.
- Compare with a fixed support. Record the same scene on a tripod or stable surface. If the supported mode is sharp when the phone is fixed but shaky in hand, the remaining problem is movement technique rather than a missing menu switch.
- Check for software-specific limits. Camera controls differ by model, One UI release, resolution and region. Install available updates and consult the documentation for the exact model if a control described for another Galaxy is missing.
How to get steadier footage without changing phones
- Hold the phone with both hands and keep your elbows close to your torso.
- Start recording after you have settled your grip; avoid pressing the record button while the phone is pointed at the subject with one hand.
- For a walking shot, bend your knees slightly and take shorter steps. Keep the phone near your chest instead of extending it fully.
- Pan slowly and avoid combining a fast pan with a zoom.
- Use the 1x main camera when you need the most predictable stabilization behavior. A different lens can have different support and a narrower correction range.
- For long static scenes, use a tripod or rest the phone against a stable object. A support prevents large movements that OIS and electronic processing are not designed to absorb.
- Keep the camera lens clean. Fingerprints and dust reduce contrast and can make motion blur look worse, although cleaning cannot compensate for movement outside the stabilizer’s range.
If your Galaxy model has no OIS
When the exact regional specification does not list OIS, use the controls that the Camera app actually provides: ordinary electronic Video stabilization, SuperSteady where supported, and a physical support such as a tripod or gimbal. Electronic modes can improve the appearance of movement, but they do not turn the camera module into an optically stabilized one.

For a phone without OIS, light and technique matter more. Record in brighter conditions, avoid very close 0.6x SuperSteady shots, keep the phone at 1x when that view is available, and reduce walking speed. If your work consistently requires stabilized handheld video, selecting a model whose specification explicitly lists OIS on the main camera is a hardware decision made at purchase time, not a setting changed afterward.
Why another Galaxy phone may show different controls
Samsung’s Camera interface is conditional. The same family can have different regional cameras, and a One UI update can move or rename a control. Resolution, frame rate, HDR10+, lens selection and other modes can also hide stabilization options. Camera Assistant may expose additional controls on supported models, but Samsung states that Camera Assistant features are not available on every device.
Do not use a screenshot from another Galaxy as proof that your phone is missing a feature. Match all of these details before comparing menus:

Recommended settings by shooting situation
| Situation | Starting setup | Adjustment if the result is poor |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld family or travel clip | Standard Video, main 1x camera; rely on automatic OIS when the model has it. | Add the ordinary Video stabilization toggle if available and the crop is acceptable. |
| Walking outdoors in daylight | Video, then SuperSteady; keep the subject about one metre away when practical. | Use 1x if 0.6x looks soft, or return to standard Video if the crop is too narrow. |
| Fast movement in a dim room | Standard Video with available OIS/electronic stabilization and additional light. | Avoid SuperSteady if noise, blur or fluorescent banding appears. |
| HDR10+ recording | Use the HDR10+ mode if its highlight and color advantages are required. | Because Samsung documents HDR10+ incompatibility with SuperSteady, choose normal Video stabilization instead. |
| Static interview or landscape | Standard Video at the desired field of view; a tripod is preferable for a long take. | Disable aggressive action processing if it needlessly crops the composition. |
Key takeaways
- OIS is hardware-based and automatic on a supported lens; a menu cannot add it to a phone that was not built with it.
- Samsung documents the Galaxy A17 5G, A26 5G, A37 5G and A57 5G with 50MP main cameras that include OIS in its 2026 A-series guide.
- For Samsung’s action mode, use Camera → Video → SuperSteady when the icon is shown.
- SuperSteady is strongest for movement in bright light, but it can reduce shutter speed, add noise or fluorescent banding, crop the view, blur close or 0.6x subjects, and conflict with HDR10+.
- Model, region, One UI version, lens, resolution and HDR10+ selection determine which stabilization controls appear on your phone.
