To identify a tournament’s League of Legends patch, use the organizer’s current rulebook, format guide, or event announcement first. Find an explicit patch number, competitive-patch statement, or tournament-realm instruction, then verify that number and its release date in Riot Games’ official patch notes. The live client’s newest patch, a stream overlay, or a spectator’s assumption is not sufficient proof.
The event, region, season, and date matter. A major championship may have a Riot-designated patch, while a regional league or third-party event may select a different version or reserve the right to change it. If no current official material names the patch, the accurate answer is that it could not be confirmed—not that the tournament must be using the latest live version.
Use this evidence hierarchy
Not every source answers the same question. Riot’s patch notes establish what a patch is and when it was released. The tournament organizer’s rules establish which patch that particular event selected. Keep those roles separate.
Recommended Free Tools
- Current event rules or organizer announcement: This is the primary evidence for the tournament you are trying to identify. Look for a competitive patch, tournament realm, game version, or a clause explaining who decides the patch.
- Riot announcement for that exact event: Riot sometimes names the official patch for an international championship or publishes the tournament decision in patch notes.
- Riot patch notes and archive: Use these to confirm the patch number, publication date, and any wording that identifies it as a tournament patch.
- Official statements from tournament officials: If the rules defer the decision to league administrators, a current clarification from those officials can resolve an otherwise ambiguous case.
- Secondary indicators: Client version displays, broadcast overlays, champion availability, or community posts can suggest a version, but they should not override an official event source.
A patch archive can tell you that Riot published 26.20 on October 6, 2026, for example. It cannot by itself prove that every tournament taking place that week used 26.20.

Step 1: Identify the exact tournament
Start by writing down the complete event identity before searching. “The tournament” is often ambiguous because a game can host several competitions in the same period.
- Official event name and stage, such as regular season, qualifier, playoff, final, or show match.
- League, region, or circuit.
- Season and year.
- Match date or match week.
- Game mode, such as Summoner’s Rift, if the event has more than one format.
Search the event’s official site with that full identity. A rulebook for a league’s 2026 regular season may not govern its mid-season tournament, and a regional rule set may not apply to an international event. If a competition has separate academy, amateur, women’s, collegiate, or online divisions, check the division’s own rules.
Step 2: Find the organizer’s current rules or announcement
Use the organizer’s own event page, downloadable rulebook, format guide, or dated announcement. Search within the page or PDF for patch, competitive patch, tournament realm, game version, live-service patch, and champion restrictions.

The strongest wording names a version plainly: “The tournament will be played on patch 14.18,” “Matches use patch 26.20,” or “The official tournament realm is running version 13.8.” Record the exact number, the publication date of the announcement, and whether it applies to the whole event or only a stage.
Wording that gives officials discretion
Some rules say the league will select the competitive patch, may delay an update, or can change the version for competitive integrity. Treat that clause as an instruction to look for a later announcement. It is not evidence that the live client is automatically used. If the document says a decision will be communicated separately, continue looking for a dated update.
Wording about timing and exceptions
Read the paragraphs around the patch reference. An event may use one patch for group play and another for playoffs, or freeze the version once a match week begins. Newly released or reworked champions may be disabled even when the rest of the game runs on the current patch. Note those exceptions separately from the base patch number.

Step 3: Verify the number in Riot’s patch notes
Open Riot Games’ official patch-note archive and the entry matching the number in the organizer’s material. Confirm three things:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- The patch label is identical, including the major and minor numbers.
- The publication date fits the event timeline.
- The notes contain any tournament-specific language or restrictions relevant to the event.
Riot’s archive listed patch 26.20 dated October 6, 2026, and patch 26.19 dated September 22, 2026, at the cited point in time. That chronology helps you catch a transcription error, but it does not convert the newest archive entry into a universal tournament setting.
Patch notes can also identify an event directly. Riot’s patch 26.20 notes, published October 6, 2026, describe it as the Worlds patch and state that Summoner’s Rift would be the patch used for year-defining competitive play. That is useful evidence for Worlds 2026; it should not be generalized to unrelated leagues or independent tournaments.
Step 4: Check for an event-specific Riot announcement
For major Riot-operated competitions, search the patch notes and the event’s official news feed for the championship name. A direct announcement is stronger than an inference from release timing.
| Event example | Patch stated by Riot | What the example proves | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSI 2023 | Patch 13.8, beginning May 2, 2023 | Riot explicitly announced the starting patch for that event. | It is not a standing rule for later MSI editions or other tournaments. |
| Worlds 2024 | Patch 14.18 | Riot’s patch 14.18 notes called it the official patch of the 2024 World Championship. | It does not establish the patch for regional leagues in 2024. |
| Worlds 2026 | Patch 26.20 | Riot’s October 6, 2026 notes identify 26.20 as the Worlds patch for competitive Summoner’s Rift play. | It does not establish the version for every event running during that patch cycle. |
Use the event name, year, and stage when citing one of these announcements. A historical example demonstrates that Riot can designate a tournament patch; it does not replace the current rules for the event you are investigating.
How to interpret a delayed competitive patch
Competitive play may intentionally lag behind the live service. A tournament needs time to test balance changes, update its practice environment, and prepare officials and teams. The delay can also protect a match week or playoff round from an update released mid-series.

The 2020 LCS rule set illustrates this approach. Section 10.4 said games would use the current live-service patch after a sufficient testing period, gave a guideline of a full calendar week after live release, and stated that a patch would not be implemented after a match week or playoff round had started. It also said changes to the competitive patch were at the league’s discretion and described automatic restrictions for newly released or reworked champions.
Those are rules from the 2020 LCS document, not a universal or current rule for every competition. Use them to understand the kinds of conditions a rulebook may contain, then apply the event’s own current language. Do not report “one week behind live” as a general League of Legends rule.
Distinguish the live patch, tournament realm, and client display
Latest live patch
This is the version ordinary players receive on the public game service. It is a useful date reference but not proof of a tournament setting. A competition may remain on the previous patch while teams and spectators receive a newer update.
Tournament realm
A tournament realm is a controlled environment used for competitive matches. Its version can be selected independently of the public client, and its rules may include champion or item restrictions. If an organizer names a tournament realm, treat that statement as more authoritative than what your personal client displays.
Broadcast or spectator display
Overlays, scoreboards, and spectator clients can show a version, but they can be stale, abbreviated, or configured for a production environment rather than the match server. Use them as a cross-check only after you have searched official event materials.
Your installed client
The patch number shown after you log in describes your current live installation. It does not reveal the historical or isolated server version used for a professional match. Do not use a friend’s client, a replay file, or a practice tool as the sole source for an event-specific answer.

What to do when sources conflict
Conflicts usually result from different dates, stages, or authorities. Resolve them in this order:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Prefer a current organizer notice that names the exact event and stage over a general patch article.
- Check whether one source applies to a different region, season, game mode, or match week.
- Look for a later amendment, erratum, or administrator post. A rulebook can remain online after an update changes its operational details.
- Compare the publication date with the match date. A pre-season rule may have been superseded by a playoff announcement.
- Check whether one source describes the base patch while another lists champion bans, hotfixes, or disabled content.
- If the conflict remains unresolved, report the uncertainty and direct readers to the organizer rather than choosing the newest number.
For example, if a rulebook says the league will decide the patch and a later event bulletin names 26.19, the bulletin is the operative source for that event. If the bulletin names no patch and Riot’s archive lists 26.20 as the newest release, you can confirm that 26.20 exists but cannot claim the tournament used it.
A repeatable verification workflow
Use this checklist whenever a match thread, broadcast, or team post does not state the version clearly.
- Define the event: Record the tournament, stage, region, season, and match date.
- Open official event materials: Check the rules, format guide, schedule page, and dated announcements.
- Search exact terms: Find every occurrence of “patch,” “competitive patch,” “tournament realm,” and “restrictions.”
- Capture qualifiers: Note effective dates, stage limits, update freezes, official discretion, and disabled champions.
- Confirm in Riot notes: Match the number and release date in the official patch archive.
- Look for Riot’s event notice: Search the matching MSI, Worlds, or league announcement if Riot operates the competition.
- Resolve discrepancies: Prefer the latest event-specific statement and verify that it covers the same region and stage.
- Label the confidence: Say “confirmed” when an official event source names the version; say “not confirmed” when you only have indirect clues.
- Preserve the date: Patch information can change, so include when the announcement was published or when you checked it.
How to report the result accurately
A useful answer gives readers both the conclusion and the evidence boundary. Use a format such as:
Event: [official tournament name, region, stage, and season]
Competitive patch: [patch number, if explicitly stated]
Primary source: [organizer rulebook or dated announcement]
Riot verification: [matching patch-note date]
Exceptions: [stage change, champion restriction, or effective date]
Confidence: confirmed / not confirmed from current official materialsQuick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
When no official source names a version, write plainly that the patch could not be confirmed from the available materials and point readers to the tournament’s current rules or officials. That is more accurate than presenting a guess as fact.

Common mistakes and their fixes
Assuming the newest patch is the tournament patch
Why it fails: Competitive events can delay or select a specific version.
Fix: Find the event’s own patch statement, then use Riot’s notes only to verify it.
Applying a historical rule to a current event
Why it fails: The 2020 LCS timing guideline is specific to that rule set and date.
Fix: Treat historical rules as examples of possible policy, not as current universal law.
Using a patch note without checking the event name
Why it fails: Riot may designate a patch for Worlds while a regional league uses another version.
Fix: Match the announcement to the exact tournament, year, region, and stage.
Ignoring amendments
Why it fails: Organizers can publish a later update after the original rulebook.
Fix: Sort notices by date and read the latest applicable one.
Treating a stream overlay as definitive
Why it fails: Production and spectator environments can display stale or different information.
Fix: Use overlays as corroboration, never as the primary source.
Reporting a patch number without its qualification
Why it fails: A number may apply only from a certain match week or exclude newly reworked champions.
Fix: Carry the effective date, stage, and restrictions alongside the number.
When the answer is genuinely unavailable
Sometimes the organizer has not published a patch number, the rulebook only grants officials discretion, or the available announcement has expired. In that situation, separate what is known from what is not:
- You can identify Riot’s published patches and their dates.
- You can state whether an official Riot event announcement designates a patch.
- You cannot infer an unrelated tournament’s server version from the archive alone.
- You should contact the organizer or consult the current rules before the match begins.
This limitation is especially important for smaller or third-party events, where a public rulebook may be less detailed and the tournament administrator may make a last-minute decision.
Quick decision guide
| What you found | How to answer |
|---|---|
| Current event rules name a patch and Riot notes confirm it. | Report the patch as confirmed, with the event source and Riot publication date. |
| Riot names the patch for that exact championship, but the organizer page is brief. | Report the Riot-designated patch and identify the championship and year. |
| Rules describe a selection process but no final number. | Say the patch is not yet confirmed; explain that officials control the decision. |
| Only the newest live patch, overlay, or community post is available. | Do not call it confirmed. Use those details only as clues while directing readers to official materials. |
| Two official sources disagree. | Check dates, stage, region, and amendments; if unresolved, disclose the conflict and seek organizer clarification. |
Key takeaway
The reliable method is event-first, not client-first: identify the exact tournament, read its current rules or announcement, verify the named patch in Riot’s notes, and preserve every date and exception. Riot’s MSI 2023, Worlds 2024, and Worlds 2026 announcements show that official competitions can receive an explicitly designated patch, while the historical LCS rules show why a live-service release and a competitive release may differ. Without an event-specific official statement, the responsible answer is that the patch remains unconfirmed.
