Film-era Olympus OM System lenses do not mount directly on an OM SYSTEM PEN camera. You need an OM-to-Micro Four Thirds adapter, such as the Olympus MF-2 reference adapter, and you should expect to focus and set aperture manually. The PEN uses a Micro Four Thirds lens mount, while an OM System lens uses the older OM mount.

Because PEN bodies differ, confirm the exact camera model and read its manual before buying an adapter or setting stabilization. The adapter must be labeled for Olympus OM lenses and Micro Four Thirds, and it must physically fit your specific PEN body.

What you need to adapt an Olympus OM lens

The essential part is an OM-to-Micro Four Thirds lens adapter. It provides the mechanical connection between a film-era Olympus OM System lens and the Micro Four Thirds mount used by PEN cameras. Olympus identifies the MF-2 OM adapter for using existing OM System lenses on a Micro Four Thirds camera in the E-PL3 instruction manual.

The adapter is a mount converter, not an electronic replacement for a modern digital lens. In normal use it carries no autofocus or aperture-control commands from the camera to the lens. The lens remains a manually operated optic, so the adapter listing should explicitly name both mounts rather than merely saying that it fits an “Olympus camera.”

Identify the lens before ordering

This procedure is specifically for an Olympus OM System lens, the interchangeable-lens family made for Olympus OM film cameras. Look for the OM-series mount and markings on the rear of the lens. Do not assume that every older lens sold under the Olympus name uses the same mount: a different Olympus lens family may require a different adapter.

If the lens is unmarked, compare its rear mount with the documentation for that lens or ask the seller to confirm “Olympus OM mount.” A listing that only says “Olympus” is not enough evidence of compatibility.

Confirm the PEN body

OM SYSTEM’s PEN cameras use the Micro Four Thirds system, but the title does not identify a particular body. Write down the complete model name, such as the model printed on the camera or its manual, before you shop. The current PEN product information is available on the OM SYSTEM PEN page; model-specific manuals and support material should be checked for your camera.

Body-specific details matter for stabilization controls, menu names and any limits noted by the manufacturer. The MF-2 reference is documented for Micro Four Thirds use, but a product listing still needs to confirm physical fit with your exact PEN.

Adapter choices: MF-2 or a compatible manual adapter

There are two practical routes. The official MF-2 is the manufacturer-documented reference, while compatible third-party adapters are available as a category. No current stock, price or hands-on performance result is established here, so choose by verified fit and construction rather than an assumed “best” adapter.

Route What is established What to verify before purchase Operation
Olympus MF-2 Olympus documents it as the adapter for existing OM System lenses on a Micro Four Thirds camera. Availability, current seller terms and compatibility with your exact PEN body. Manual focus and manual aperture.
Third-party OM-to-Micro Four Thirds adapter The category can provide the same mechanical mount conversion. Explicit “Olympus OM” and “Micro Four Thirds” labels, secure retention, construction, flange fit, exact-body compatibility and return policy. Manual focus and manual aperture; electronic functions should not be assumed.

Use the manufacturer’s MF-2 documentation as a reference point even if you buy another adapter. A reputable listing should state the two mount standards, describe how the lens locks in place and identify the camera mount it fits. Keep the seller’s return option in mind because a listing can be technically labeled yet still have poor fit or retention.

Check these details before mounting anything

  • Lens mount: Confirm that the lens is an Olympus OM System lens, not merely another Olympus-branded mount.
  • Camera mount: Confirm the PEN body is a Micro Four Thirds model and record its exact model designation.
  • Adapter labels: Look for both “Olympus OM” on the lens side and “Micro Four Thirds” on the camera side.
  • Retention: Check how the adapter locks to the body and how the lens locks to the adapter. A loose connection can affect safe handling and image quality.
  • Manual operation: Plan to focus on the lens and set its aperture ring yourself; do not buy on the expectation of autofocus or camera-controlled aperture.
  • Documentation: Keep the adapter instructions and the exact PEN manual available for mounting and stabilization settings.
  • Returns: If the seller provides a return period, retain packaging until the adapter has been checked on the intended body and lens.

How to mount the lens, step by step

The following sequence describes the adaptation workflow. Follow any different handling instruction supplied with your particular adapter or camera.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the lens and body. Verify the OM marking on the lens and the complete PEN model name. If either mount is uncertain, stop and confirm it before attaching parts.
  2. Inspect the adapter. Confirm that it is an OM-to-Micro Four Thirds adapter and check the locking tabs, mating surfaces and rear opening for damage or debris. Do not force a mount that does not align.
  3. Read the product instructions. Mounting details vary by adapter. If the camera or adapter instructions tell you to turn the camera off during mounting, follow that instruction; the exact handling requirement is not established for every product.
  4. Attach the adapter to the PEN. Align the adapter’s Micro Four Thirds side with the camera mount and rotate it until the body’s locking mechanism engages. Confirm that it is seated without wobble.
  5. Attach the OM lens to the adapter. Align the lens’s OM mount with the adapter, rotate it until it locks and check that the lens is retained before lifting the camera by the lens.
  6. Set the lens controls. Turn the focus ring to focus and use the lens aperture ring to select the working aperture. The camera cannot be expected to change those settings electronically.

To remove the setup, support the lens, release the appropriate lock and reverse the mounting sequence without twisting against a locked release. Consult the exact product manuals if a release button or alignment mark is not obvious.

What changes when you shoot with an adapted OM lens

Focus is manual

Olympus states in the E-PL3 manual’s Principal Accessories section: “Focus and aperture must be adjusted manually.” This is the clearest expectation for an adapted OM lens. Turn the lens’s focus ring yourself and confirm focus through the PEN’s viewing or display aids available on your model.

The adapter does not turn an OM lens into a native digital lens. It cannot be used as evidence that autofocus, camera-controlled focus modes or lens communication will work. If you need autofocus for a particular assignment, use a lens designed for the camera’s native mount instead.

Aperture is set on the lens

Set the aperture with the ring on the OM lens. Because the camera does not receive normal electronic aperture commands from this lens, changing a value on the body should not be treated as a substitute for moving the lens ring.

Stopping down changes the amount of light reaching the sensor and the appearance of the image, so focus and exposure may become more difficult as you select smaller apertures. The exact display behavior and exposure aids depend on the PEN model and its shooting mode; consult that body’s manual rather than assuming it matches another PEN.

Autofocus is unavailable

OM SYSTEM’s OM-series compatibility guidance lists autofocus as unavailable for this adapted-lens use. The page is dated 3 July 2009, so treat its detailed behavior as the manufacturer’s stated guidance and verify current body-specific behavior in your manual. An adapter listing that contains the word “compatible” does not, by itself, mean autofocus has been added.

Metering and stop-down behavior

The same OM-series guidance describes stop-down metering and warns that metering behavior differs by shooting mode. In practical terms, the camera meters with the lens stopped to the aperture you selected rather than using the electronic, wide-open communication available from a native digital lens.

That description comes from OM SYSTEM’s support page, Accessories for M.ZUIKO DIGITAL Lens (OM-series), dated 3 July 2009. It should not be generalized into an identical menu or metering result for every newer PEN body. If the exposure indication behaves unexpectedly, try the shooting modes and metering options documented for your camera and use the selected aperture on the lens as the reference point.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Do not infer a particular exposure mode, automatic aperture behavior or metering accuracy from the adapter alone. Those functions are controlled by the camera body and its firmware, while the adapted lens supplies no normal electronic lens data.

Set image stabilization deliberately

The PEN manual says image stabilization can be used with an adapted lens when you enter that lens’s focal length in the camera’s image-stabilization settings. Enter the focal length marked on the OM lens, using the exact setting procedure in the manual for your body.

The E-PL3 manual supports this requirement, but the supplied documentation does not establish one current menu path for every PEN model. Do not copy an E-PL3 menu sequence into another camera without checking its manual. If your body provides no adapted-lens focal-length field, follow its own instructions rather than guessing.

Entering the focal length is a setup task for stabilization; it does not provide autofocus, electronic aperture control or lens identification. Make the entry again when you switch to a lens with a different focal length if your camera requires that.

How to choose between adapters

Choose the MF-2 reference when documentation is your priority

The MF-2 is the named Olympus reference for attaching existing OM System lenses to a Micro Four Thirds camera. It is the straightforward choice when you want the adapter designation cited in an Olympus manual. Current availability and price were not verified, so check a current seller and confirm that the listing is genuine and suitable for your body.

Choose a third-party adapter when the fit is clearly documented

A compatible manual adapter can be appropriate when it explicitly identifies Olympus OM on one side and Micro Four Thirds on the other. Give more weight to precise mount labels, secure locking, an accurately machined connection and a usable return policy than to claims that it “supports all Olympus lenses.” The latter wording may combine several unrelated Olympus mounts.

Neither route should be selected on the promise of autofocus. Both routes require manual focusing and aperture setting for the OM-series use described by Olympus and OM SYSTEM.

Troubleshooting an adapted-lens setup

The lens will not attach

  • Recheck that the lens is an Olympus OM System lens and that the adapter is specifically OM-to-Micro Four Thirds.
  • Align the mounting marks and release buttons instead of applying extra force.
  • Inspect both mounts for bent tabs, dirt or damage.
  • Compare the adapter’s instructions with the exact body and lens; a different Olympus mount may need a different adapter.

The lens attaches but feels loose

  • Remove the camera from your working position and support the lens.
  • Check that the body and lens locks have fully clicked into place.
  • Do not continue using an adapter that rocks, fails to retain the lens or releases unexpectedly; contact the seller under its return or support terms.

The camera does not autofocus

This is expected for the OM-series adaptation described by OM SYSTEM. Focus with the lens’s focus ring. An adapter cannot be assumed to add autofocus unless its documentation specifically proves otherwise, and the official guidance lists autofocus as unavailable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The exposure looks wrong after changing aperture

  • Confirm that you changed the aperture on the lens ring, not only a body setting.
  • Remember that the OM guidance describes stop-down metering and different behavior by shooting mode.
  • Read the metering and exposure sections of the exact PEN manual; do not substitute instructions from another PEN generation.

Stabilization behaves unexpectedly

  • Check whether your PEN provides an adapted-lens focal-length setting.
  • Enter the focal length marked on the lens as directed by that camera’s manual.
  • Verify the setting again after changing to a lens with a different focal length.

Use the correct support documents

Start with the manual for the exact PEN model. The OM SYSTEM compatibility lists provide a central place to check supported combinations and related downloads. The E-PL3 manual is useful for the documented MF-2 accessory and stabilization principle, but it is not a universal menu guide for every PEN camera.

Keep the older OM lens’s own instructions, if available, for its aperture and focus controls. The camera manual explains body settings; the adapter instructions explain alignment and retention. Reading all three avoids treating a mechanical mount converter as if it were an electronic native lens.

First-shoot checklist

  • Lens confirmed as Olympus OM System mount.
  • PEN model recorded and its Micro Four Thirds mount confirmed.
  • Adapter explicitly labeled OM-to-Micro Four Thirds.
  • Adapter and lens lock firmly without force or wobble.
  • Focus ring and aperture ring operate smoothly.
  • Autofocus is not expected; focusing is manual.
  • Aperture is selected on the lens.
  • Metering behavior is checked in the chosen shooting mode.
  • Lens focal length is entered in the body’s stabilization setting when that control is provided.
  • Manuals and seller return details are retained until fit is confirmed.

Bottom line

To use an older Olympus OM System lens on an OM SYSTEM PEN, pair the lens with an OM-to-Micro Four Thirds adapter, using the documented MF-2 as the reference option. Verify the exact PEN model and adapter fit, then operate the lens manually: focus on the lens, set aperture on the lens, and follow the camera manual for stop-down metering and stabilization. The adapter solves the mount mismatch; it does not turn the film-era lens into an autofocus, electronically controlled lens.
