On z/OS, JES receives batch jobs, schedules them for processing, and controls their output. Job output is commonly held on JES spool for later viewing or handling, but how long it stays available depends on installation settings and job disposition—not on one universal retention period. Rerunning a job can mean starting over, restarting at a named step, or restarting from an application-created checkpoint; each option has different data-set and authorization requirements.
How a batch job moves from submission to output
A batch job is submitted using JCL, which describes the work and its resource requirements. IBM describes the Job Entry Subsystem (JES) as receiving jobs, scheduling them for processing by z/OS, and controlling their output processing. An initiator selects eligible work and runs its steps; during that lifecycle, z/OS and JES coordinate resources and spooled input and output.
Output sent to a SYSOUT data set is directed to JES spool rather than necessarily being sent straight to a physical printer. JES output for a job can include more than the program’s reports: it may include submitted JCL, system messages associated with the job, and one or more SYSOUT data sets. That is why a spool display can show several distinct output entries for a single job.

The JCL, messages, and application-produced SYSOUT serve different purposes. JCL helps an operator or developer see what was submitted; system messages report processing and status; application SYSOUT contains data written by the program. Which parts appear, and how they are grouped or routed, depends on the job and the installation’s JES configuration.

Where output goes and how users view it
JES spool and output classes
JES holds and manages spool output until it is handled according to the applicable class, routing, disposition, and installation policy. A class can be associated with different output handling, such as online inspection, printing, or routing elsewhere. Do not assume a particular class name means the same thing at every site: output-class definitions and defaults are installation choices.
Output directed to spool may be inspected online instead of physically printed. IBM’s z/OS documentation describes SDSF as a common interface for monitoring jobs and examining held or queued output. The output a user sees there is only what remains available in the JES queues and what that user’s access permits.
SDSF and TSO/E OUTPUT
SDSF is useful for checking a job’s status and reviewing available output. Depending on local configuration and the user’s authority, a viewer may be able to inspect output, release held output, or take other actions. An output that has already been purged, moved, or otherwise made unavailable will not reappear simply because the user opens SDSF.

Ownership, security profiles, and, where used, security labels can restrict who may inspect or manipulate output. If a job appears in a queue but its output cannot be opened or changed, the issue may be authorization rather than a missing SYSOUT data set. Operators or the site’s security administrators can determine which access rule applies.
How long batch output remains available
There is no single z/OS retention period that applies to every batch job. Output may be held for review, released for processing, routed to a destination, or automatically purged, depending on JES configuration and the job’s output disposition. The installation may also have a scheduler policy or a separate archive process. IBM’s documentation describes the mechanisms, not a site-neutral number of days that every shop follows.
To find out whether a particular job’s output can still be retrieved, check the relevant output class and hold/purge behavior with the JES operations team, then ask whether scheduler retention or an archive is involved. These are separate questions: JES spool visibility describes what is currently available through the queues, while an archive may preserve material outside the live spool. Do not treat either as guaranteed unless the local procedure says it is.
- Class and destination: determine how the job’s output is routed and whether it is eligible for online review or another destination.
- Hold and release policy: establish whether output waits for a user or operator action, or proceeds automatically.
- Automatic purge: find out whether the class or disposition causes output to be deleted after processing.
- Archive and scheduler rules: ask whether output is copied or retained by a separate operational process, and for how long.
- Access: confirm that the person looking for the output is authorized to see it.
If output is no longer visible in SDSF, first distinguish deletion from access denial or routing elsewhere. Then ask whether a permitted archive or destination contains it. A rerun is not a substitute for retrieving the original output: it may repeat work, produce different results, or change data, so it should be considered only after the job’s purpose and current data state are understood.

What “rerun” can mean
“Rerun” is used for several different recovery actions. Before submitting anything, establish whether the goal is to reproduce the entire job, continue after a completed step, resume from a program checkpoint, or use an automatic restart facility. These are not interchangeable, and the restart option must match what the job and installation actually support.
| Recovery choice | Where processing begins | What must be true |
|---|---|---|
| Resubmit from the beginning | The job starts over. | Repeating completed work must be safe for the data and external effects involved. |
| Deferred step restart | A named step, or a step within a procedure. | The step can run correctly in the current data-set state, and its required inputs remain available. |
| Deferred checkpoint restart | A named step and checkpoint ID. | The application established a usable checkpoint, the restart identifies it, and the checkpoint data set is accessible through SYSCHK. |
| Automatic restart | As determined by the restart facility and job setup. | The restart was requested, the failure is eligible, an operator authorizes it, and checkpoint restart has a successful checkpoint when one is required. |
This table describes the broad choices, not a promise that every job supports every row. A program that does not create checkpoints cannot resume at an application checkpoint merely because the job failed partway through.
Deferred restart at a step or checkpoint
Step restart
IBM’s z/OS JCL documentation uses the JOB statement’s RESTART parameter for deferred restart. A step restart names the step at which processing should begin; a procedure step can be identified when the target is inside a procedure. In practice, restart JCL must be checked against the exact job, procedure, and installed z/OS release rather than copied from a generic example.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA step restart does not rewind earlier steps or automatically recreate their side effects. It begins at the requested point, so the data sets and other resources expected by that step must be in the right state. If the failed job created, passed, cataloged, or modified data before the restart point, an operator must account for that work rather than assume the step can simply be repeated.

Checkpoint restart
A deferred checkpoint restart identifies both a step and a checkpoint ID. The restart job also identifies the checkpoint data set with SYSCHK. The checkpoint must have been established by the application, completed successfully, and remain accessible in the restart environment. The checkpoint’s usefulness depends on the application’s design; it is not a general JES feature that captures every program’s internal state automatically.
For a checkpoint restart, confirm which checkpoint is valid and whether its saved state matches the data sets that will be used. A checkpoint that is missing, unusable, or inconsistent with the current inputs is not a safe starting point. The job’s application and operating procedures determine how that consistency is validated.
Automatic restart is conditional
Automatic restart is different from an operator or scheduler resubmitting a job with a deferred RESTART choice. IBM documents conditions that include a restart request through RD=R or RD=RNC, an eligible abend or system failure, and operator authorization. Automatic checkpoint/restart additionally depends on a successful checkpoint. A failed batch job therefore does not generally resume itself at the exact point where it stopped.

Even when the restart conditions are met, the appropriate recovery point and data-set disposition still matter. Automatic restart is a configured capability with eligibility and authorization rules, not a guarantee that all jobs restart unattended. The installation’s procedures determine who authorizes the restart and how the recovery is monitored.

Protect data sets before restarting
The highest-risk part of a restart is often not the JCL parameter; it is the state of the data. IBM’s deferred step restart requirements distinguish among newly created data sets, passed data sets, and OLD data sets needed by the restart step. Those distinctions affect whether a data set must be removed, cataloged, or retained for the restart.
- NEW data sets: a newly created data set used by the target step may need to be deleted before that step runs again. Confirm the actual allocation and disposition; deleting the wrong data set can destroy needed work.
- Passed data sets: a data set passed from an earlier step may need to be cataloged so it remains available to the restarted work.
- OLD data sets: retain OLD data sets that the restart step still requires. Their existing contents or position may be essential to the intended recovery.
- Tape with MOD positioning: tape handling has additional positioning rules, so do not infer safe restart behavior from a disk-data-set example.
- Generation data sets: generation data groups have additional restart considerations; verify the specific JCL and release guidance rather than assume a new generation will be selected or reused as desired.
These are decision points, not universal cleanup commands. The safe action depends on the JCL, the step that failed, what completed before failure, and the data-set dispositions. Before restarting, compare the last completed step and the target restart step with the catalog and contents of each relevant data set; involve the production operator or application owner when the effects are uncertain.
How workload schedulers can help
A workload scheduler can add procedures around JES, but it is an optional layer rather than an inherent behavior of every z/OS batch installation. IBM Z Workload Scheduler documentation for version 10.2.7 describes capabilities for inspecting job output, tailoring JCL to restart between named steps, and performing cleanup actions. A site may use such functions to standardize recovery, or may rely on other operational procedures.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Automation can reduce manual work, but it does not remove the need to understand the job’s recovery semantics. A scheduler’s restart or cleanup action still has to select the correct step, preserve required inputs, and avoid repeating unsafe side effects. Ask which scheduler procedure applies to the job and whether it is approved for the current failure scenario.
A practical pre-restart checklist
- Identify the job and outcome needed. Determine whether the requirement is to retrieve old output, repeat the whole job, restart at a step, or resume from a checkpoint.
- Review the job’s output and messages. Use an authorized interface such as SDSF while the output is available; identify the failure point and the steps that completed.
- Check the restart method. Verify that the job supports the intended step or checkpoint restart, and confirm required JCL syntax for the installed z/OS release.
- Inspect data-set state. Account for NEW, OLD, and passed data sets, plus any tape MOD or generation data-set rules relevant to the job.
- Confirm authorization and operating procedure. For automatic restart, establish eligibility and obtain the required operator authorization; for a scheduler-managed restart, follow the site’s approved procedure.
- Submit or authorize only after validation. Monitor the resulting job and verify that its output and data effects match the intended recovery.
Comparing two installations or recovery designs
There is no universally best output or restart configuration independent of workload and operating policy. When comparing environments, use the same practical dimensions rather than comparing a single label such as “held” or “restartable.”
| Dimension | Questions to compare |
|---|---|
| Output destination and class | Is output inspected on spool, printed, routed to a remote destination, or written to a data set? |
| Retention and retrieval | What is held, automatically purged, archived, or retrievable, and which users may access it? |
| Restart granularity | Can the job only be resubmitted from the beginning, restarted at a step, or resumed from an application checkpoint? |
| Restart preconditions | Are RD settings, checkpoint availability, failure eligibility, operator authorization, or scheduler procedures involved? |
| Data integrity | How are NEW, OLD, passed, tape MOD, and generation data sets handled at the restart point? |
IBM’s cited z/OS documentation spans releases 2.5, 3.1, and 3.2, and the scheduler functions noted above are documented for IBM Z Workload Scheduler 10.2.7. JES2 and JES3 have distinct details even where the broad lifecycle concepts are shared. Installation exits and local security or naming conventions can also affect what users see, so verify exact syntax and behavior against the release and configuration in use.
