The main difference is the dividend-growth record required: the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index requires at least 25 consecutive years of annual dividend increases, while “Dividend King” commonly refers to a company with at least 50 consecutive years of increases. Aristocrat is a defined index with S&P 500 membership and additional eligibility rules; King is a broader label whose list criteria can vary.
How the two definitions differ
| Comparison | S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats | Dividend Kings |
|---|---|---|
| Dividend-growth record | At least 25 consecutive years of annual dividend increases. S&P Dow Jones Indices | Commonly at least 50 consecutive years. This is a convention attributed to Kiplinger’s June 9, 2026 explanation, not a universal index rule. Kiplinger |
| Membership boundary | A company must be in the S&P 500 and meet the index’s other eligibility criteria, including market-capitalization and liquidity screens. S&P methodology | The broad convention does not require S&P 500 membership. A specific list may impose its own criteria. |
| Who defines it? | S&P Dow Jones Indices publishes the benchmark and its methodology. Index description | There is no single standardized list methodology established here; check the publisher’s definition and date. |
| How membership is maintained | The qualifying universe is reviewed annually; index constituents are reweighted quarterly. S&P methodology | Update schedules depend on the list publisher; no universal schedule is established. |
Why an Aristocrat is not simply a King with a shorter record
The Aristocrats label in this comparison refers specifically to the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index, not every index or investment product that uses “Dividend Aristocrat” in its name. Its 25-year record is only one qualification: the company must also belong to the S&P 500 and pass the index’s eligibility rules.
“Dividend King,” by contrast, is a broad market label for an especially long history of annual dividend increases. The common 50-year convention does not make it a single benchmark with one controlling rulebook. Different publishers may define or maintain their lists differently, so verify the criteria and date on any particular roster rather than assuming all lists are identical.
How the Aristocrats index is weighted and reviewed
The S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index is equal weighted: a constituent’s weight is not based on its company size. S&P describes the intent as treating each constituent as a distinct investment opportunity “without regard to its size by equally weighting each company.” Its methodology reviews the qualifying universe annually and reweights constituents quarterly. These mechanics describe the index, not the way every Dividend Kings list is assembled.

What the labels can—and cannot—tell you as an investor
Both labels point to a historical pattern of dividend increases. Neither, by itself, establishes that a company will keep raising its dividend or that its shares are a suitable investment. A long record is one piece of information, not a substitute for assessing the business and the price you would pay.
- Business fundamentals: Consider whether the company’s operations and finances can support its obligations and future plans.
- Payout capacity: Assess whether earnings and cash flow can sustain the dividend, including through weaker periods.
- Valuation and yield: A long record does not establish that a stock is attractively priced or that its yield suits your needs.
- Portfolio risk: Evaluate diversification and the possibility of a dividend freeze or cut; a decades-long record cannot rule either out.
Use the Aristocrats designation as a screen or benchmark for a particular group of S&P 500 dividend growers, and the Kings label as a way to find companies with exceptionally long reported growth histories. Treat either as a starting point for further analysis, not as a recommendation or safety guarantee.
