GOG is the clearest choice if you want a documented, store-wide path to downloadable installers and offline single-player play. Its terms define DRM-free distribution as having no digital-rights management, copy protection or required internet connection for single-player content, except where an online connection is part of multiplayer or another stated feature. GOG also lets buyers download offline backup installers from the website, and its quality-assurance guidance requires games to work without the Galaxy client.
itch.io also avoids platform-level DRM and delivers files exactly as creators upload them, but every project can have different launchers, account checks or online requirements. Humble sometimes supplies a genuine standalone installer, yet the evidence is title-specific rather than a store-wide guarantee. The practical rule is simple: verify the delivery type for the exact game, download its installers, then test a clean offline launch before you depend on it.
Which stores provide installers you can keep?
“DRM-free” is not a universal promise across every storefront. The strongest evidence differs by store, so compare the policy, the download workflow and the exceptions rather than relying on a badge or a retailer’s name.

| Store | Installer access | Launcher or activation position | Offline-play evidence | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GOG | Offline backup installers are available from the website after purchase. | Galaxy is optional for single-player content. | Store terms and developer quality-assurance requirements call for offline single-player access. | Multiplayer, achievements and other online features can still require services; a listing may state exceptions. |
| itch.io | Creators provide downloadable files in the form they uploaded. | The platform imposes no DRM and does not modify uploaded files. | Depends on the creator’s build and the game’s design. | Inspect each page for launchers, account checks and online-only functions. |
| Humble Store | Some titles provide a standalone installer; other purchases may deliver keys for another store. | Varies by product. | Confirmed here for Klei’s Don’t Starve standalone download. | No current store-wide DRM-free guarantee is established by the available evidence. |
GOG: the broadest documented promise
GOG’s published definition says DRM-free distribution has no DRM, copy protection or online-connection requirement, with the exception of multiplayer elements. It also says single-player content must be accessible offline unless a particular product listing explains otherwise. GOG’s quality-assurance documentation is even more direct: games must be playable offline and without the Galaxy client.

- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
That combination matters because it covers both policy and testing requirements. You can buy a game, retrieve its installer from the web library, store that file yourself and install it later without signing in to a launcher. Galaxy remains useful for optional conveniences such as automatic updates, achievements or social features, but it is not required for the offline single-player mode covered by the promise.
itch.io: no platform DRM, creator-level variability
itch.io’s creator FAQ says the service lets users download games exactly as the creator uploaded them and makes no modifications to those files. The platform itself therefore does not wrap a title in a mandatory DRM layer. This is valuable when a developer supplies a simple archive or installer that can be copied to another drive.
The trade-off is that itch.io is a marketplace rather than a uniform catalog. A creator can upload a build that opens directly, a build that uses its own launcher, or a game designed around an account or server. A “no DRM” platform policy cannot remove requirements that are already inside the files. Read the project’s install notes and comments, and treat every title as an individual technical decision.

Humble’s delivery method changes from one product to another. Some purchases are standalone downloads, while others provide a key to activate the game on a different store. A key is not the same thing as owning an independent installer, because the destination platform may impose its own launcher or activation rules.

There is a documented DRM-free path for at least one title. Klei’s support instructions, updated May 22, 2025, tell Don’t Starve buyers to open their Humble purchase page and download a platform-specific standalone installer. That confirms a real Humble workflow for that game, but it does not establish that every Humble listing is DRM-free. Check the delivery description for the exact product before paying.
What “DRM-free” does—and does not—mean
DRM-free means the store is not requiring a separate authorization check merely to run the supplied single-player files. It does not mean every part of the game functions without a network connection.
- Usually offline: installing the files, launching the single-player executable and loading local saves, provided the product has no title-specific exception.
- Often online-dependent: multiplayer matchmaking, dedicated servers, cloud saves, platform achievements, friends lists, leaderboards, timed events, downloadable content fetched on demand and live-service systems.
- Still possible: a game may be DRM-free yet include an optional launcher, an online account for community features or a server check for multiplayer.
Read “offline single-player” as a specific capability, not a promise that the entire product is permanently independent of the internet. If a store listing identifies an exception, that listing controls your purchase decision.

How to buy and preserve a GOG game
- Check the product page. Read the platform and feature notes, looking for any statement that limits offline access or identifies an online-only component.
- Complete the purchase and open the game in your web library. Use the browser-based purchase page rather than assuming the Galaxy client is required.
- Download the offline backup installers. The web library provides the installer files and, where applicable, separate language or bonus-content downloads. Save every file you may need to reinstall the game.
- Copy the files to independent storage. Keep a second copy on an external hard drive or portable SSD. A failed internal drive should not also destroy the only installer.
- Test before you travel or disconnect. On a computer that is offline, run the installer and launch the single-player game. This catches missing runtimes, incomplete downloads and title-specific exceptions while you still have internet access for troubleshooting.
- Keep a record of the build. Note the game version and any required patches in a text file beside the installer. If a future update changes behavior, you will know which files produced the working installation.
GOG’s documented position is that Galaxy “is and will remain optional for accessing single-player offline mode.” You can therefore keep Galaxy installed for convenience or omit it entirely on a machine intended for disconnected play. Features tied to GOG’s online services remain separate from the local game.

How to evaluate an itch.io download
- Read the creator’s instructions first. Look for operating-system support, installation steps, required runtimes, launchers and any account or network requirement.
- Identify what you are downloading. A ZIP archive, a native installer and a launcher-managed package have different preservation implications. Keep the original archive or installer, not only an extracted folder.
- Inspect the first launch. Start the game while connected, then repeat with networking disabled. Note whether it asks for a login, contacts a server or starts normally.
- Separate optional services from core play. If the game opens offline but disables online leaderboards or multiplayer, that is consistent with local ownership; document the limitation for your future self.
- Back up the creator’s notes. Save the readme and installation instructions with the files. A small independent project may not provide the same documentation years later.
Because itch.io delivers files without modifying them, the creator’s engineering choices determine long-term usability. A direct executable can be highly portable, while a custom launcher or server-dependent design may not be. The store name alone cannot answer that question.
How to check a Humble purchase before relying on it
- Read the delivery type on the exact product page. Distinguish a standalone download from a redemption key for another platform.
- Open the purchase page after checkout. Look for a downloadable installer associated with the title, not merely a code to activate elsewhere.
- Follow the publisher’s instructions. For Don’t Starve, Klei directs buyers to download a platform-specific standalone installer from the Humble purchase page.
- Install and test offline. Disconnect the computer after installation and verify the single-player mode. If the game redirects to another launcher or asks for activation, it is not meeting your offline requirement.
- Archive the installer and receipt information. Keep the files, the platform and version notes, and enough purchase information to identify the title later.
Do not generalize from the Don’t Starve example to the entire Humble catalog. Humble can provide an independent installer, but the available evidence supports that conclusion only for documented titles and workflows.
Which store fits your priority?
Choose GOG for the clearest repeatable workflow
GOG is the best default when your priority is buying a conventional PC game, downloading an installer from a website and launching single-player content without a client. Its policy language, quality-assurance requirement and offline-backup workflow align with that goal. Confirm listing-specific exceptions, especially for games whose identity is built around online services.
Choose itch.io when you value direct files and independent releases
itch.io is attractive when you want the creator’s original files and are willing to inspect each project. It can be the most straightforward option for small games distributed as archives or standalone executables, but consistency depends on the creator. Treat the listing, readme and an offline test as your evidence.

- Important Notes for PS/Xbox Gaming Devices: You can play last-gen games (PS4 / Xbox One) directly from an external hard drive. However, to play current-gen games (PS5 / Xbox Series X|S), you must copy them to the console's internal SSD first. The external drive is great for keeping your library on hand, but it can't run the new games.
Use Humble selectively
Humble can be suitable when the page clearly offers a standalone installer for the title you want. If it offers only a key for another store, evaluate that destination’s DRM and launcher rules instead. A discounted price does not change the delivery model.
Building a durable offline library
Download installers soon after purchase rather than assuming they will always be visible in the same place. Store one copy on your main computer and another on an external hard drive or portable SSD; for irreplaceable purchases, add a third copy in a different location. Keep folder names readable, for example Game Name/Installer/Version, and preserve language packs, patches, manuals and readme files alongside the main installer.
Periodically test one archived game on a machine that is not signed in to a launcher. A backup is useful only if the installer still runs, the files are complete and you know the launch steps. Record any dependency the creator or publisher specifies, such as a particular operating-system version or runtime, without assuming that a future computer will provide it automatically.
Troubleshooting an offline launch
The game opens a launcher or asks for activation
Confirm that you installed the standalone or offline package rather than a platform key or a launcher-managed download. On GOG, use the web-library offline installer instead of the Galaxy installation path. On itch.io or Humble, reread the title’s instructions; the creator or publisher may have supplied a different executable for offline use.

The installer works but a feature is unavailable
Check whether the missing function is multiplayer, cloud saving, achievements, a leaderboard or another connected service. Offline DRM-free status concerns local access, not the continued operation of servers. The single-player executable may be functioning normally.
The archived installer is incomplete
Compare the saved files with the original download list, including split archives, language files and patches. Re-download while the purchase page is available, then replace the backup with a complete copy and repeat the offline test.
A store page has changed
Catalogs, regional delivery options and launcher dependencies can change. Before buying, read the current listing; before archiving, save the installer and the publisher’s instructions. A store-wide policy does not override a product page that states an exception.
Final buying checklist
- Is the download a standalone installer, creator-uploaded archive or merely a key?
- Does the exact listing promise or document offline single-player access?
- Can the game launch without the store client and without an internet connection?
- Which functions will remain online-only?
- Have you downloaded the files and copied them to separate storage?
- Have you tested the archived installer before depending on it?
For the reader who wants the strongest documented answer, start with GOG and download the offline installers immediately. Consider itch.io when you are comfortable evaluating a creator’s files yourself, and treat Humble as title-by-title: a standalone installer is possible, but it must be shown for the specific game you are buying.
