Use the terminal’s settings to change the terminal’s appearance, then use /config if you want Claude Code’s theme to match it. Anthropic’s reviewed documentation does not specify Claude Code color-depth guarantees or accessibility conformance.
Where to change Claude Code and terminal themes
These are separate controls. Anthropic’s terminal setup guidance says the terminal application handles its own theme and describes using Claude Code’s /config command to match Claude Code’s theme to the terminal. Changing Claude Code’s theme does not change the terminal application’s theme.
- Change the appearance of the terminal window in the terminal application’s own settings.
- In Claude Code, run
/configand choose the theme option that matches the terminal.
What Anthropic documents about terminal compatibility
Anthropic’s examples concern keyboard behavior, not a comprehensive list of terminals that support Claude Code themes or a compatibility matrix.
- For Shift+Enter in VS Code or iTerm2, Anthropic documents running
/terminal-setup. - For Option+Enter, the guide gives settings steps for macOS Terminal.app and for iTerm2 or VS Code.
These examples show where Anthropic provides terminal-specific setup instructions; they do not establish that themes, colors, or keyboard behavior are identical across terminal applications.

Color support: no documented color-depth guarantee
The reviewed Anthropic terminal setup guide and CLI reference do not state whether Claude Code supports 8-color, 256-color, or 24-bit (true-color) output, or describe a mechanism for detecting color depth. Their guidance therefore does not establish a specific color-level guarantee.
If colors look wrong, check the color and theme settings in your terminal application’s current documentation. The reviewed Claude Code pages do not identify a Claude Code setting that forces a particular color depth.

Accessibility and readable themes
The reviewed terminal documentation does not provide contrast ratios, an accessibility conformance statement, screen-reader behavior for themes, or color-vision guidance. Matching Claude Code’s theme to the terminal should not be treated as a guarantee of accessible contrast or assistive-technology behavior.
Choose foreground and background colors that are readable for you in the terminal application, and check that application’s accessibility and color-setting documentation for details about its own behavior.

Platform and shell context
Anthropic’s setup documentation lists macOS 10.15 or later, Ubuntu 20.04 or later or Debian 10 or later, and Windows through WSL or Git for Windows. It says Claude Code works best in Bash, Zsh, or Fish. These are general setup details, not a promise that every terminal implementation displays themes in the same way.
