The geometry changes the solve. A linear seating puzzle has meaningful ends, while a circular puzzle has no first or last seat. In a circle, rotating everyone together does not create a new relative arrangement, so you normally fix one person as a reference. Left and right also depend on whether people face the center or face outward, and an exact opposite seat exists only when the circle has an even number of seats.

The safest method is to identify the layout, mark every facing direction, choose a valid anchor, translate each clue into a precise positional constraint, and then verify every clue against the completed diagram.

The structural difference at a glance

Feature Linear arrangement Circular arrangement
Shape One straight row, or two parallel rows A closed loop of seats around a table
Useful anchors Left and right ends, a stated position from an end, or a middle seat No inherent end; one person’s seat is fixed as a reference to remove rotational duplicates
Left and right Read from the direction each person or row is facing For people facing the center, left is anticlockwise and right is clockwise; facing outward reverses those directions
Neighbors An interior seat has two neighbors; an end seat has one Every occupied seat has two neighbors, including the seats drawn at the visual “start” and “finish” of the circle
Opposite position There is no standard across-the-table position in a single row A diametrically opposite seat exists when the number of evenly spaced seats is even
Typical clue emphasis Ends, distance from an end, a middle position, and who sits between whom Immediate neighbors, clockwise or anticlockwise movement, facing direction, and across-the-circle positions

These are different constraint systems, not two drawings of the same puzzle. A clue that is decisive in a row can be weak in a circle, and a clue that wraps around a circle has no direct linear equivalent.

Why a circle needs a reference seat

Suppose six people satisfy every clue around a round table. Turning the entire arrangement one seat clockwise leaves every neighbor relationship unchanged. The turned drawing is not a second logical solution; it is the same relative arrangement viewed from a different orientation.

To prevent this duplication, place one named person in any convenient seat and keep that seat fixed while you solve. This is a drawing convention, not an extra fact supplied by the puzzle. You may put A at the top, at the right, or in a numbered seat; all choices should lead to the same relationships once the clues are applied.

When a circular puzzle can still have two answers

Fixing a reference removes rotation, but it does not automatically remove reflection. If the wording never distinguishes clockwise from anticlockwise and all clues are mirror-symmetric, a clockwise arrangement and its mirror image can both remain valid. Treat them as separate possibilities until a directional or asymmetric clue eliminates one.

Left and right depend on facing direction

Never translate “to the left” before identifying how the people face. The SATHEE instructional materials use the following convention for a circular table:

  • Facing the center: left is anticlockwise and right is clockwise.
  • Facing outward: left is clockwise and right is anticlockwise.

The reversal is easiest to understand from the person’s viewpoint. When you turn to face away from the center, your body’s left-hand side points the other way around the table.

Rows require the same discipline

In a linear puzzle, “left” and “right” are not automatically the page’s left and right. They are relative to the stated facing direction. A row of people facing north can be drawn with their left toward the page’s west; a row of people facing south has the opposite mapping. If a puzzle has two rows facing one another, each row must be interpreted from the occupants’ own viewpoint.

Write a small arrow beside each row or person before using a directional clue. This single annotation prevents the common mistake of applying one page-wide orientation to people who face in different directions.

Adjacency, distance and the meaning of “between”

“Next to,” “immediately beside,” and “adjacent” mean that no seat separates the two people. In a row, an end occupant has only one possible neighbor. In a fully occupied circle, the seat next to the first drawn seat is also adjacent to the last drawn seat; the loop closes across the visual boundary.

People between versus seats away

These phrases are not interchangeable. If four people sit between P and Q in a row, five seat intervals separate them. In a circle, count along the direction named in the clue and stop at the specified relationship. If the clue says “two people sit between,” count occupants, not empty positions. If it says “three seats away,” count seat-to-seat moves instead.

For a circle, two routes may connect the same pair: clockwise and anticlockwise. A clue that gives no direction may permit either route, while “immediately clockwise” selects one. Record the route explicitly rather than relying on the visual spacing of your sketch.

What “opposite” means in a circle

An opposite seat is across the table through the center. It exists only when the evenly spaced circle has an even number of seats. With six seats, the opposite of any seat is three moves away; with eight seats, it is four moves away. More generally, for n seats, the opposite position is n/2 seat intervals away when n is even.

With an odd number of equally spaced seats, no seat lies exactly across the center. Two seats may be nearly opposite, but calling one “opposite” would add a relationship the geometry does not provide. If a question uses that word in an odd-seat diagram, check whether it defines a special convention; otherwise treat the wording as inconsistent rather than inventing a nearest seat.

Opposite is not the same as farthest in a row

A linear arrangement can have a person at the other end, but that person is not normally called “opposite.” Reserve “opposite” for the across-the-center relationship in a circular or facing-row context unless the puzzle explicitly defines another meaning.

A reliable solving routine

  1. Identify the layout. Draw a numbered row for a linear puzzle, parallel rows for a two-row puzzle, or a circle with the required number of seats for a circular one.
  2. Mark facing directions. Add an arrow for each row or person. For a table, note “center” or “outward” beside the relevant names if people face different ways.
  3. Choose an anchor. In a row, use an end, a specified position, or a middle seat. In a circle, place one named person arbitrarily to remove rotational duplicates.
  4. Place the strongest relationships first. Start with a fixed position, an immediate pair, an opposite pair, or a block of linked people. Leave vague “somewhere to the left” clues for later.
  5. Translate each clue into a constraint. Write “A immediately clockwise of B,” “C has two people between C and D,” or “E is not adjacent to F” beside the diagram. Do not rely on memory.
  6. Track both directions in a circle. If a clue does not specify clockwise or anticlockwise, test both routes unless another condition rules one out.
  7. Propagate consequences. Once a pair or block is placed, mark every seat it occupies and every seat it forbids. A negative clue can be as restrictive as a positive one.
  8. Branch only when necessary. If two placements remain possible, create clearly labeled cases rather than mixing assumptions in one drawing.
  9. Verify every clue. Check direction, adjacency, separation counts, opposite positions, and negative statements against the final arrangement. A diagram that satisfies most clues is not a solution.

Worked example: a linear row

Consider a hypothetical six-seat row with people A, B, C, D, E and F all facing north. The clues are: B sits at the left end; D sits immediately right of B; F sits at the right end; C sits somewhere left of E; and A is not adjacent to F.

  1. Number the seats 1 through 6 from the row’s left end. B occupies 1 and F occupies 6.
  2. Because everyone faces north, “right of B” is the page’s right in this drawing. D therefore occupies 2.
  3. The open seats are 3, 4 and 5 for A, C and E. C must be left of E, so C cannot be 5 and E cannot be 3.
  4. A cannot be adjacent to F, so A cannot occupy 5. The remaining possibilities place A at 3 or 4, with C and E filling the other two seats in left-to-right order.
  5. Test each branch against all clues. The end seats remain meaningful throughout; there is no wraparound adjacency between seats 1 and 6.

The important point is not the particular answer but the use of the endpoints. B’s end position and F’s end position are facts that a circle would not provide automatically.

Worked example: a circular table facing the center

Now consider six equally spaced seats with A, B, C, D, E and F, all facing the center. The clues are: B sits immediately clockwise of A; C is opposite A; D sits immediately anticlockwise of E; and F is not adjacent to B.

  1. Fix A at an arbitrary reference seat. This removes rotations without claiming that A has a special table position.
  2. Because everyone faces the center, clockwise is each person’s right. Put B in the seat immediately clockwise from A.
  3. With six seats, C must be three seat moves from A, directly across the center.
  4. Place the D-E adjacent pair in the remaining seats in the orientation required by “D immediately anticlockwise of E.”
  5. Check F’s two possible neighboring seats. If either placement makes F adjacent to B, reject that branch; if both do, revisit the orientation of the D-E pair.

The same names and adjacency language produce a different search because the first and last drawn seats are neighbors, and because the center-facing convention maps right to clockwise.

Two parallel rows: why linear puzzles become more technical

A two-row arrangement is still linear in its anchors, but it adds a second perspective. Label the rows separately and draw the people’s facing directions before interpreting any left/right clue. If the rows face one another, page-left for the top row may correspond to page-right for the bottom row from the occupants’ viewpoints.

Useful row-specific checks

  • Keep a fixed seat count for each row; do not slide one row relative to the other after placing a person.
  • Distinguish “next to” within the same row from “opposite” across the aisle. The puzzle should define whether an across-the-aisle pair is opposite.
  • Apply a directional clue to the named person’s row, not to the other row’s orientation.
  • When a clue links rows, record both coordinates, such as “seat 3 in the north-facing row is opposite seat 3 in the south-facing row,” if that is the stated convention.

Common errors and how to correct them

Error Why it fails Correction
Giving a circle a permanent first seat Rotation does not change relative relationships Fix one reference person only as a drawing aid
Using one left/right map for everyone Facing center and facing outward reverse the directions Annotate each facing direction before placing directional clues
Forgetting wraparound adjacency The two visually separated ends of a circular sketch are neighbors Check the closing edge between the last and first drawn seats
Calling near-opposite seats opposite in an odd circle No seat is exactly across the center Require an even seat count or an explicit puzzle convention
Equating people-between with seats-away The counts differ by one interval Use the wording literally and show the counted seats
Accepting a diagram that misses a negative clue “Not adjacent” and similar exclusions are hard constraints Run a final clue-by-clue audit, including every prohibition
Transferring a circular rule to a row Rows have ends and do not wrap around Choose the geometry first, then use only its valid relationships

How to make your diagrams unambiguous

Use a consistent notation. Number linear seats from one end and mark the direction of increasing numbers. For a circle, number seats clockwise after fixing the reference person, but remember that the numbers are yours, not clues from the puzzle. Draw an arrow next to any person whose facing direction differs from the others.

For a tentative placement, use a light mark or a separate case diagram. A crossed-out seat means “forbidden,” while a question mark means “not yet determined.” This distinction prevents an assumption from being mistaken for a deduction.

When to branch and when to restart

Branch when the puzzle genuinely leaves two placements open and each branch can be tested against several remaining clues. Restart the diagram if you discover that you used the wrong orientation, treated a circular boundary as open, or fixed a person in a way the wording did not justify.

In a circle, changing the arbitrary reference person should not change the relative answer. If it appears to do so, compare the two diagrams after rotating one until the same named person occupies the reference seat. A difference after alignment signals either a missed clue or an orientation error.

Choosing the right strategy for each puzzle type

If the puzzle gives you… Start with…
An end, a numbered position, or a middle seat The fixed linear anchor, then fill outward while respecting the row direction
A block of immediate neighbors in a circle The block as a unit after fixing one reference person
An opposite-seat clue in an even circle The diametric pair, then place adjacent relationships around both positions
Several facing directions A direction map for each person or row before any left/right deduction
Mostly negative clues A candidate arrangement that satisfies the strongest positive relation, followed by systematic elimination
Ambiguous “left” or “right” wording The puzzle’s stated viewpoint; if none is supplied, record both interpretations instead of silently choosing one

A final verification checklist

  • Is the shape correctly identified as a row, parallel rows, or a closed circle?
  • Are all facing directions marked and used consistently?
  • Did you use a legitimate linear anchor or only an arbitrary circular reference?
  • Does every occupied circular seat have the correct two neighbors?
  • Were clockwise and anticlockwise routes distinguished where required?
  • Does every claimed opposite pair have an even number of seats and a half-circle separation?
  • Were people-between and seats-away counted according to the exact wording?
  • Do all positive and negative clues hold simultaneously?
  • If multiple arrangements remain, are they genuinely different after rotation is removed?

Conventions can vary, so read the wording first

The SATHEE pages provide teaching conventions for linear arrangements and circular seating, including the center-facing and outward-facing left/right rules. Individual exams or puzzle books may define a different viewpoint, use “opposite” for a special two-row relationship, or describe seats rather than people. The explicit definition in the question takes precedence over a default convention.

No single diagramming trick replaces that reading. The durable skill is translating the words into geometry before placing names: ends versus wraparound, personal left/right versus page direction, and exact opposition versus ordinary separation.

Bottom line

Linear puzzles are anchored by ends and positions along an open path. Circular puzzles are anchored by relative relationships on a closed loop: fix one person to remove rotation, interpret left and right from each person’s facing direction, include wraparound neighbors, and use “opposite” only when the seat count makes a diametric pair possible. Once those four changes are handled explicitly, the rest of the solving process—constraint placement, controlled branching, and complete verification—works reliably for either format.
