CAT QUEST II is a 2D open-world action RPG in which a cat king and a dog king work together to reclaim their thrones. The safest way to make steady progress is to follow the main quest, clear nearby side quests, use both heroes rather than relying on one attack pattern, and treat weapons, spells, passive abilities, and dungeons as parts of one progression system.

This guide explains where to go first, how to get stronger without wasting time, how to choose equipment, how switching works in solo play, and how to approach local two-player co-op.

What CAT QUEST II is and what you should do first

PlayStation describes CAT QUEST II as “a 2D open-world action-RPG set in a fantasy realm of cats and dogs.” Its story moves between the cat realm of Felingard and the Lupus Empire, following two rulers who must cooperate to recover their kingdoms. The world combines a central throne-reclamation story with optional quests, monsters, dungeons, and equipment choices.

  1. Keep the current main quest as your navigation target.
  2. Accept side quests that are close to the route you are already taking.
  3. Explore the route rather than rushing directly from marker to marker.
  4. Return to town when you have new equipment or rewards to evaluate.
  5. Push the next main objective only after checking that your gear and abilities suit the fights ahead.

This routine is practical advice based on the game’s documented systems, not a hidden rule that requires a particular order. It limits unnecessary backtracking while giving you regular opportunities to learn combat and improve both characters.

Your first priorities in the open world

Follow the main quest, but do not ignore nearby side quests

The main quest gives your journey direction and introduces the kingdoms, characters, and major objectives. Side quests are valuable because they let you practice against enemies in a less pressured setting and provide additional opportunities to strengthen your party. You do not need to clear every optional activity before moving the story forward. Instead, take side content when it is nearby and abandon a detour when it sends you far beyond your current route.

A useful rule is to accept a side quest if you can complete it during the same trip as a main-quest objective. If it requires a long journey into an area where enemies are overwhelming, mark it mentally as a later task and continue with the safer objective.

Use towns as equipment checkpoints

Town visits are not only for turning in quests. Use them to review rewards, compare weapons, check spells, and decide whether each hero has a clear combat role. Re-evaluate your loadout after a dungeon, after several side quests, or whenever ordinary enemies begin taking much longer to defeat.

Explore with a purpose

Exploration is most productive when it answers a question: Is there a nearby quest? Does this route lead toward the next objective? Have I found a dungeon that matches my current strength? Deliberate exploration helps you discover content without turning every trip into an aimless sweep of the map.

Combat fundamentals that keep beginners alive

Learn both heroes instead of building around one favorite

CAT QUEST II lets you switch between the cat and dog. In solo play, this means you can change the active character when a fight favors a different range, attack pattern, or defensive approach. In local co-op, each player can control a hero, so both players should understand what their character contributes.

Do not treat the second hero as a spare life. Practice moving, attacking, and disengaging with both characters during ordinary encounters. If one hero is better suited to close combat and the other can contribute safer ranged damage, alternate between them instead of forcing every enemy into the same exchange.

Match your approach to the enemy group

  • Against a single dangerous enemy: keep enough distance to recognize its attack pattern, then commit to damage during the opening it creates.
  • Against several enemies: avoid standing in the middle of the group. Move around the edge, use attacks that can affect more than one target when available, and switch heroes if the current character is being surrounded.
  • Against ranged threats: prioritize the enemy that limits your movement. A safer angle or a spell that interrupts the group can be more valuable than immediately attacking the closest target.
  • When health is falling quickly: stop trading hits. Create space, change characters, and reassess your equipment before attempting the same encounter again.

Use movement as part of your defense

Because the game is an action RPG rather than a menu-driven battle system, survival depends on positioning as much as on attack power. Move before you are trapped, keep an escape route open, and do not chase a retreating enemy into an unexplored group. A fight that looks difficult in a confined space may become manageable once you pull enemies into a wider area.

How to get stronger and “level up” in CAT QUEST II

New players often ask for one leveling trick. The documented progression systems point to a broader answer: you become stronger through quest progress, dungeon rewards, weapons, spells, passive abilities, and the choices you make about how those tools work together. There is no universally best build established by the available game information, so compare every upgrade by the role it serves.

Complete appropriate quests

Main and side quests are the most dependable way to turn exploration into progress. If an objective is close and its enemies are manageable, complete it before moving on. Quest rewards can give you the resources or equipment needed for the next part of the story, while the combat itself improves your familiarity with both heroes.

Use dungeons as controlled progression tests

Dungeons contain traps and obstacles as well as enemies. Enter one when your current equipment and abilities are adequate, not simply because you have discovered its entrance. A dungeon that defeats you repeatedly is useful information: leave, complete nearby content, improve your loadout, and return later. Retreating is a progression decision, not a failure.

Upgrade for the problem you are actually facing

When a new weapon or ability appears, ask what it fixes. If you are taking damage while approaching enemies, favor safer range or control. If enemies survive long enough to surround you, favor dependable close damage or crowd control. If you can deal damage but cannot survive mistakes, choose a more defensive or forgiving combination. Avoid spending resources merely to make a number larger when the upgrade does not address your current weakness.

Choosing weapons, spells, and passive abilities

The game includes swords, staves, expanded weapon options, spells, and passive abilities whose attributes can be mixed. The right choice depends on your preferred risk level and on the enemies in the area, not on a single item that is always correct.

Combat need Build direction When it helps Trade-off
Safe damage Ranged weapon or spell support When enemies punish close contact or you need room to reposition May require more movement and careful targeting
Close-range pressure Sword-focused attacks and complementary passives When you can read enemy openings and stay mobile Greater exposure to contact damage
Group control Spells or effects that slow, interrupt, or affect several enemies When packs surround you or block narrow routes Control may reduce immediate single-target damage
Survivability Defensive passive abilities and forgiving attack choices When learning a dungeon or fighting unfamiliar enemies Encounters may take longer

Build the two heroes to complement each other

You do not need identical equipment on both characters. A complementary pair is often easier to manage: one hero can specialize in close combat while the other supplies ranged damage or control. This gives you a reason to switch and reduces the chance that one enemy type completely invalidates your approach.

Alternatively, two similar builds can be sensible in local co-op when both players want the same pace and range. The important point is that each character should have a job you understand. A complicated mixture of passives is less useful than a simple setup you can apply consistently.

Review equipment after every meaningful reward

Do not wait until you are stuck to inspect your inventory. Compare new items after a quest or dungeon and ask three questions:

  • Does this improve the role I want this hero to play?
  • Does it make a difficult matchup safer or faster?
  • Would the other hero benefit more from it?

If the answer to all three is no, keep your current setup and continue. Constantly changing equipment without a combat reason makes it harder to learn what is working.

How to approach dungeons, traps, and obstacles

Check readiness before entering

There is no benefit to proving that you can survive an area far above your current strength. Before entering, make sure both heroes have equipment that matches their intended roles and that you have a plan for enemies that can attack from different ranges. If ordinary encounters on the approach already consume most of your health, treat that as a warning.

Advance in short sections

Move through a dungeon one safe section at a time. Observe traps before crossing, avoid sprinting into rooms you have not read, and keep enough space to retreat. In co-op, communicate before triggering a dangerous area so one player does not advance while the other is still recovering.

Know when to leave

Retreat if the dungeon repeatedly defeats you, if your attacks are taking too long to matter, or if you cannot handle its obstacles without losing most of your health. Return after nearby quests and equipment reviews have improved your options. The open-world structure is designed to let you pursue a different objective rather than forcing a single dungeon immediately.

Solo play and local co-op

CAT QUEST II supports solo play and local two-player play. In solo mode, switching between the cat and dog gives you access to both heroes’ attacks and lets you choose the character that best fits the current fight. In local co-op, each player controls a hero, making role coordination more important than simply using the strongest-looking item.

A practical co-op division of roles

  • Agree who will stay closer to enemies and who will maintain safer distance.
  • Call out when a player is retreating so the other does not get surrounded alone.
  • Use different attack ranges when possible; two players standing in the same danger zone can be less effective than one player creating space.
  • Review equipment together in town so rewards are assigned to the character that benefits most.

If one player is new to action games, give that player the more forgiving role and practice in nearby side content before attempting a difficult dungeon.

Where should you go first?

Start by following the main quest marker and use nearby side quests as short detours. This approach introduces the setting while keeping your equipment and abilities moving forward. When the path presents multiple destinations, prefer the objective that is close to your current route and appears manageable for both heroes.

Do not interpret every unexplored area as an instruction to enter immediately. A dungeon, monster group, or side quest that overwhelms you is a signal to continue elsewhere, not proof that you missed a secret requirement. Return after improving your gear through accessible quests and rewards.

Common beginner problems and fixes

“I keep losing the same fight.”

Change the situation rather than repeating the same attempt. Switch heroes, create more distance, choose a weapon or spell that addresses the enemy group, and check whether a nearby quest can provide a stronger setup. If the fight is inside a dungeon, leave and return later.

“I have equipment, but I do not know what to equip.”

Assign each item a purpose: safe damage, close pressure, crowd control, or survivability. Equip the option that fixes your current problem, then test it against ordinary enemies before judging it in a difficult encounter.

“I am exploring but not progressing.”

Re-center on the main quest. Accept only side quests that fit the same route, complete them, return to town for an equipment review, and then continue the primary objective. Exploration should support progression rather than replace it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“One hero feels much weaker.”

Compare that character’s equipment and passive abilities with the role you expect them to play. A hero built for ranged safety may feel weak if used as a melee attacker, while a close-combat setup may underperform when you never create openings. Reassign the role before discarding the character.

Platform and release information

The PlayStation listing identifies a PS4 version with one-to-two-player support and a 23 October 2019 release date for that listing. Nintendo Life also lists CAT QUEST II in the Nintendo Switch eShop category. Store availability, editions, and pricing can vary by region and should be checked in the relevant storefront before purchase.

A repeatable progression checklist

  1. Set the main quest as your current direction.
  2. Accept nearby side quests that fit the route.
  3. Use both heroes during ordinary fights so switching becomes familiar.
  4. Choose weapons, spells, and passive abilities by combat role.
  5. Enter dungeons only when your equipment and abilities are adequate.
  6. Leave a dungeon or encounter that is clearly beyond your current strength.
  7. Return to town after meaningful rewards and review both characters.
  8. Push the main quest once your loadout addresses the next area’s likely risks.

The Bottom Line

Follow the main quest, clear convenient side content, switch between the cat and dog to match each fight, and build equipment around a clear role. When a dungeon or enemy is too strong, leave, improve through accessible quests and gear, and return later. That flexible loop is the key to surviving and progressing through CAT QUEST II.
