You cannot choose your Nen affinity in Hunter x Hunter as if selecting a class in a game: the story presents affinity as connected to innate talent, desire, and environment. You can, however, choose a favorite type for a quiz, role-play, or character idea. The useful question is which type’s way of using aura appeals to you—not which one is objectively strongest. No universal best type is established by the official glossary.
What Nen is—and what a Nen type means
Nen is the aura or energy emitted by a human body; Nen ability is the ability to control and adjust that energy. That distinction matters: a Nen type is not a separate energy, and it is not one of the basic practices used to manage aura. The Nippon TV Hunter x Hunter glossary describes six main categories of Nen ability.
The four foundational practices—Ten, Zetsu, Ren, and Hatsu—are distinct from those six categories. They should not be counted as four additional types. A category instead describes the broad way an ability makes use of aura. When you ask which type to choose, you are usually asking which of those six ability approaches you like best, not which basic practice you would learn.

The six Nen types, in practical terms
The category names can sound similar, so it helps to focus on what each one does. These are broad definitions, not a complete set of rules for every ability in the story.
#1 Best Overall
| Type | What it does | A useful way to picture its appeal |
|---|---|---|
| Enhancement | Strengthens the natural function or power of the user’s body or an object. | Direct reinforcement: making an existing capability or object more powerful. |
| Emission | Projects aura outward. | Taking aura beyond the user rather than keeping its use close to the body. |
| Transmutation | Changes aura’s properties. | Giving aura altered qualities rather than making a separate object from it. |
| Conjuration | Materializes aura into objects. | Creating an object through aura. |
| Manipulation | Controls objects or living things through aura. | Using aura to direct or control something. |
| Specialization | Covers abilities that do not fit the other five categories. | Choosing a category for an ability outside the other five broad approaches. |
Transmutation versus Conjuration
These two are easy to confuse if you imagine both as “making something different.” Transmutation changes aura’s properties; Conjuration materializes aura into an object. In other words, one concerns the qualities of aura, while the other concerns creating an object from aura. That distinction is a better guide than judging by how visually unusual an ability looks.
Specialization is a category, not a ranking
Specialization is defined by what does not fit the other five categories. That makes it a distinct part of the system, not evidence that it is automatically more powerful or a better choice. The official glossary does not provide a universal ranking of the six types, so treating one as the top pick goes beyond what that source establishes.
Can you choose your affinity in canon?
No. In the story’s framework, a person generally has one affinity, and the official glossary connects that affinity with innate talent, desire, and environment. That makes affinity a starting point associated with the person, rather than a preference they pick from a menu. A character can still have abilities involving other categories; the glossary’s account of training relationships does not present the home category as an absolute ban on learning outside it.

The category diagram also matters for training. Neighboring categories are easier to learn, while the category opposite a person’s affinity is the most difficult. This describes relative ease, not a guarantee that every character will learn a specific ability or a numerical measure of effort. The glossary does not give a universal training timetable or promise that a particular result follows from choosing a given type.
How does water divination identify a type?
Water divination is the in-world method identified by Nippon TV for finding a person’s category. It is a fictional test that requires aura, not a real-world personality test or a procedure that can be reproduced by putting an ordinary glass of water on a desk. A glass of water by itself cannot establish a reader’s Nen affinity.
The official glossary excerpt identifies the method but does not lay out every category’s precise water reaction. For that reason, it would be misleading to present a full reaction chart as if it were confirmed by that glossary alone. If you want to compare the reactions shown in the story, consult the original manga rather than treating a fan-made chart or online quiz as an official diagnostic guide.
Which type should you choose as a fan?
If you mean “which one should I like best?”, choose based on the ability function or character fantasy that sounds most satisfying. Think about what you would want a fictional ability to do, not what a quiz claims your personality proves. The questions below turn that preference into a practical choice.
- Do you like making an existing capability stronger? Enhancement is the most direct fit for strengthening the natural function or power of a body or object.
- Do you like projecting aura outward? Emission centers on sending aura beyond the user.
- Do you like changing aura’s qualities? Transmutation is the relevant category when the appeal is altering aura’s properties.
- Would you rather create an object? Conjuration is the category associated with materializing aura into objects.
- Does controlling something appeal more than creating or strengthening it? Manipulation covers controlling objects or living things through aura.
- Are you drawn to an ability that does not fit the other five categories? Specialization covers abilities outside those categories, though the label alone does not establish what an individual ability can do.
If two options appeal to you, compare them by function rather than by a claim that one is stronger. For example, the choice between Transmutation and Conjuration is a choice between changing aura’s properties and materializing an object. The choice between Enhancement and Emission is between strengthening a body or object and projecting aura outward. These contrasts help you describe a preference; they do not predict a real-world trait or establish an in-story affinity.
What does a type choice mean for a character you create?
For character design or role-play, begin with the ability idea and then ask which category best describes its central action. If the core is reinforcement, start with Enhancement. If it is outward projection, start with Emission. If it changes aura’s properties, consider Transmutation; if it materializes an object, consider Conjuration. If it controls a target, consider Manipulation. If the concept does not fit those five, Specialization may be the closest broad category.
Rank #4
These are starting points, not a substitute for the system’s details. A single ability concept may need closer thought about what it actually does, and the six short definitions do not answer every edge case. Avoid assigning a type solely because an ability looks dramatic, seems clever, or would make a character powerful. The useful test is whether the category’s stated function matches the ability’s central mechanism.
If you want the character’s affinity to feel consistent with the story’s rules, decide the character’s home category separately from the ability they would most like to have. The home affinity is not described as voluntary; its position on the diagram also affects which neighboring or opposite categories are easier or harder to learn. A character can therefore have an appealing ability concept without that concept automatically proving their affinity.
How much weight should you give a Nen personality quiz?
Fan quizzes often use personality descriptions attributed to Hisoka to guess a likely type. Such a quiz can be entertaining, and it can give friends a shared prompt for talking about which abilities they prefer. It cannot establish an actual Nen affinity. The quiz approach is fan interpretation, not an official diagnostic tool, and personality matching is not a scientific measurement.
Best Value
Read a result as “this type fits the quiz’s playful interpretation of my answers,” not “the story’s rules say this is my type.” That distinction also applies when quiz results sound confident or give a specific explanation: confidence in the wording does not turn a fan-made method into canon. If your result conflicts with the category you personally find most appealing, there is no need to treat that as a contradiction. One is a quiz’s guess; the other is your preference.
A quick decision framework
Use these four checks to keep a choice grounded and clear:
- Ability function: Identify the action you want: strengthen, project, alter aura’s properties, create an object, control something, or explore an ability outside the other five.
- Preferred fantasy: Decide whether you are drawn to direct reinforcement, ranged projection, altered aura, created tools, control, or an unusual category.
- Affinity and training: If you are designing a character, remember that a home category is not framed as a voluntary selection and that adjacent categories are easier to learn than the opposite category.
- Evidence: Separate an official in-world rule from a character’s opinion or a fan quiz interpretation. They are not equally authoritative.
Your answer depends on what “choose” means. For a favorite, pick the ability function and character fantasy you enjoy most. For a character’s in-world affinity, the canon does not present the answer as a voluntary choice. For a quiz result, have fun with it without mistaking it for a measurement.
