The most reliable Minecraft lag fix is not installing a long list of “optimization” plugins. Profile the server first with Spark, then apply the smallest change that addresses the measured bottleneck. On Paper, use Spark to identify whether the cost comes from entities, chunk generation, block activity, or something else; pre-generate a new world with Chunky when exploration is the trigger; and use entity-limit plugins only when profiling proves that mobs or items are consuming tick time.
Paper’s built-in activation ranges are often a better first tuning lever than another plugin. They have documented defaults and important gameplay trade-offs, especially for villagers. The workflow below is designed for Paper and compatible Spigot forks, with settings and commands current to the evidence available in October 2026.

What “lag” means on a Minecraft server
Players can experience lag for different reasons, and each one needs a different fix. A server that pauses while new terrain generates has a chunk-generation problem; a server that slows near an animal farm has an entity-tick problem; delayed block updates may point to redstone, hoppers, or other block entities; and a saturated network connection can look like a performance problem even when the server’s tick loop is healthy.
Server simulation is commonly expressed as ticks per second (TPS). A healthy server aims to process 20 ticks each second. When tick processing takes too long, TPS falls and players see delayed movement, combat, block breaking, or redstone. Spark reports the work consuming that tick time, so it should be used before changing configuration.

Do not treat a percentage improvement quoted by a hosting blog as a benchmark. No independently published study or survey establishes a universal percentage gain from these plugins. Results depend on the world, player count, farms, hardware, and server version.
The recommended order of operations
- Profile: capture a Spark report during the lag, not after restarting the server.
- Identify the bottleneck: decide whether the report points to chunk generation, entities, block activity, plugins, CPU saturation, or another cause.
- Apply one targeted change: use Chunky for exploration spikes, an entity limiter for proven entity overload, or Paper’s activation settings for broad ticking control.
- Measure again: repeat the same workload and compare Spark reports. Keep the change only if it improves the measured problem without unacceptable gameplay changes.
This sequence prevents a common failure mode: adding several plugins at once and then being unable to tell which one helped or introduced a new problem.

Why Spark is the starting point
Paper includes Spark from version 1.21, and Paper’s profiling documentation identifies Spark as the current performance tool. Paper’s documentation also says Timings has been unmaintained for multiple years; for current performance information, use the Spark commands supported by your server version.
Run a timed profile
- Reproduce the problem, or wait until the server is under its normal peak load. A profile taken while nobody is online may miss the cause.
- Run this command from the console or as an operator in game:
/spark profiler start --timeout 600 - Leave the server in the same workload for the ten-minute capture. When the timer ends, Spark returns a report URL.
- Open the report and note the top contributors to tick time. Record the player count, world, and activity during the capture so a later profile is comparable.
Paper’s command reference treats /spark as the performance command to rely on. If your Paper build does not bundle Spark, install a Spark build compatible with that server version and verify it loads without errors before profiling.
Read the report as a decision tree
- Chunk generation or loading dominates: use pregeneration with Chunky before players explore the area.
- Entity ticking or entity lookup dominates: inspect farms, item piles, villagers, and mob-heavy areas; consider a targeted limiter and Paper activation ranges.
- A particular plugin dominates: check its configuration and compatibility before adding another optimization plugin. Disable or update it in a controlled test.
- Block entities or redstone dominate: locate the machines or farms responsible and reduce their activity. An entity limiter will not solve a hopper or redstone bottleneck.
- CPU, garbage collection, or disk work dominates: address the underlying host or workload. Installing a mob plugin cannot compensate for an exhausted CPU or slow storage.
Use the report to select one intervention. Profiling is not a one-time ritual: capture another report after the change and during the same type of load.
2. Pre-generate terrain with Chunky
When Chunky is the right fix
Exploring an ungenerated world forces the server to create and populate chunks while players are moving through them. That burst of work can cause temporary TPS drops and long pauses, especially when several players travel in different directions. Chunky is designed to generate a selected area ahead of time so exploration no longer performs that work during live play.

Plan the area before players join
Chunky’s pregeneration guidance recommends generating the world before players arrive. Decide whether you need a radius around spawn, a square border, or a separate area for a planned build. A larger area takes more time and storage, so do not generate an unlimited world simply because the command accepts a large number.
A starting example from Chunky’s guide is:
chunky radius 5000
The value is a radius in blocks around the current center. Confirm the selected world and center in Chunky before starting a large job; generating the wrong dimension can consume resources without helping the area players use.
Reduce the impact of generation
- Run the job during a maintenance window or before opening the server to players.
- Watch Spark, TPS, CPU, memory, and disk space while generation runs.
- Use a smaller radius first if you are unsure how much storage or time the world requires.
- Stop or pause generation if it competes with a live event; finish the remaining area later.
On Paper, Chunky’s FAQ suggests adding -DPaper.WorkerThreadCount=X to the server start script, where X is the worker-thread count. Treat this as a controlled setting rather than a universal speed recommendation: allocating more workers can compete with the main server thread or other services. Change it only while monitoring the host and test the resulting workload.
3. Control entities only when profiling proves they are the cause
Entities include mobs, animals, villagers, dropped items, and other objects that require tracking or ticking. Large livestock farms, dense villager halls, and item piles can create a local or global performance problem. An entity plugin is appropriate when Spark shows entity work at the top of the profile and you can identify the area or entity type responsible.

ClearLag: broad cleanup with a real item-loss risk
ClearLag can remove ground items and limit entities. Its broad cleanup behavior is also its main danger: automatic clearing can delete valuable drops before a player collects them. If you use it, configure a whitelist for items that must survive and make the cleanup interval and warning behavior visible to players. Test the configuration on a copy or during a maintenance window so you know exactly what is removed.
Do not install a cleanup plugin merely because the server feels slow. If Spark points to chunk generation, block activity, or a faulty plugin, clearing items may change the visible symptom without addressing the cause.

MobLimiter and FarmLimiter: stricter caps for farm-heavy servers
MobLimiter and FarmLimiter are intended for stricter entity caps, including caps within a block radius. They can be useful on servers with very large livestock farms where a local concentration of animals is the measured bottleneck. A radius-based cap is more precise than deleting every dropped item on the server, but it can still change farm output and breeding plans.
Before enabling a cap, decide which entity types and locations are essential. Document the limit, radius, and expected gameplay effect, then profile again after the farm is active. If the server’s issue is caused by villagers, item entities, or a different category, a livestock-only limit will not fix it.
Entity-limit safety checklist
- Back up the world before changing deletion or cap behavior.
- Whitelist quest items, rare drops, or materials players are expected to collect.
- Announce automatic cleanup so players do not mistake a scheduled removal for a bug.
- Apply limits to the problematic world or area where the plugin supports that scope.
- Measure before and after with Spark instead of judging only by how empty the ground looks.
4. Tune Paper’s built-in activation ranges
Paper exposes entity activation settings in spigot.yml. They reduce how often distant entities are ticked, which can lower simulation cost without adding another plugin. Change these values only after profiling and keep a backup of the original file.
Documented default ranges
| Category | Default activation range | What the setting controls |
|---|---|---|
| Animals | 32 blocks | Distance at which animal entities receive normal activation. |
| Monsters | 32 blocks | Distance at which hostile mobs receive normal activation. |
| Miscellaneous | 16 blocks | Distance for miscellaneous entity categories. |
| Raiders | 64 blocks | Distance for raider entities. |
These are the defaults in the PaperMC spigot.yml reference; the reference page does not state a year. Your fork or distribution may expose additional keys, so verify the exact names in the generated configuration for your build.
How to change a range safely
- Stop the server cleanly and make a backup of
spigot.ymland the world. - Open the entity activation section and change one category at a time.
- Start the server, reproduce the workload, and capture another Spark profile.
- Check gameplay in farms, redstone areas, villages, and combat zones before keeping the value.
Setting a category’s range to 0 or a negative number turns throttling off for that category. That does not mean “disable the entities”; it means the activation throttling for that category is disabled, allowing normal ticking at any distance. Use this only when you understand the resulting CPU cost.
Villager behavior caveat
Paper offers a setting that disables ticking for inactive villagers. The performance trade-off is significant: villagers do not work as they do in Vanilla, and their trades restock only while players remain nearby. Do not enable this option on a trading server without testing restock schedules and informing players.

Do not assume vertical activation ranges exist
A PaperMC GitHub discussion proposed a separate vertical activation range. The available documentation does not confirm that the proposal was merged. Do not publish or configure it as if it were a standard Paper setting; check the configuration and release notes for your exact build.
5. Additional tools: where they fit and where confidence is lower
| Tool | Best use | Evidence and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| FastAsyncWorldEdit (FAWE) | Large world edits and construction jobs. | A secondary guide reports asynchronous edits that reduce lag during massive builds. Treat this as a workload-specific benefit, not a general server-performance guarantee. |
| EntityTrackerFixer | Targeted entity-tracking inefficiencies. | Described as a focused optimization, not a replacement for entity limits. Validate compatibility and measure with Spark. |
| ViewDistanceTweaks | Adjusting view and simulation distance as server health changes. | Secondary coverage describes dynamic adjustment; confidence is lower than for Paper’s documented settings. Test for visual and gameplay side effects. |
| Dedicated entity-culling plugin | Client-side or server-side hiding of entities. | No dedicated entity-culling plugin was established in the available material. Paper/Spigot activation configuration is the closest documented built-in mechanism. |
| Chunky Pregenerator mod | Fabric environments using Chunky as a backend. | This is a third-party Fabric mod, not the official Chunky plugin. Do not install or describe it as the same project on a Paper server. |
These tools should follow the same rule as every other optimization: install only when the profile and workload justify them, and verify that the build supports your Minecraft and server versions.
6. A practical rollout plan for a live server
Before making changes
- Write down the server software, Minecraft version, Java runtime, online player count, worlds, and peak hours.
- Back up the world and configuration files.
- Capture a ten-minute Spark profile during the problem.
- Note the exact activity: exploration, a farm, a raid, a build edit, or a scheduled event.
Apply the smallest targeted change
- If new terrain is the trigger, stop player access and pregenerate the required area with Chunky.
- If entities are the trigger, identify the specific type and location before selecting ClearLag, MobLimiter, or FarmLimiter.
- If broad distant ticking is the trigger, adjust one Paper activation category instead of stacking multiple limiter plugins.
- If a large edit is the trigger, test FAWE in a staging copy and schedule the edit outside peak play.
Validate the result
- Repeat the same player activity and profile duration.
- Compare Spark’s top contributors, TPS behavior, and tick-time spikes.
- Check farms, villager trades, item collection, mob spawning, and exploration for unintended changes.
- Keep a change log so you can roll back the last setting if a later update causes trouble.
Common failure modes and fixes
“I installed a lag plugin, but TPS is still low”
Return to Spark. A cleanup plugin cannot solve chunk generation, redstone, disk stalls, or a separate plugin consuming the main thread. Remove the unproven change, reproduce the issue, and profile the actual workload.
“Pregeneration made the server lag while it ran”
Pregeneration is computationally expensive by design. Run it before players join, reduce the radius, pause it during peak hours, and review worker-thread allocation. Do not increase Paper.WorkerThreadCount blindly; more workers can compete with live server processing.
“Players lost items after automatic cleanup”
Disable automatic clearing until you have a tested whitelist. Restore from backup only if necessary, and communicate the cleanup policy. Valuable drops should never depend on an untested default.
“Villager trades stopped restocking”
Check whether inactive-villager ticking was disabled. Re-enable normal ticking if Vanilla-like behavior is required, and test restocking with players at different distances.

“A plugin fails after a Paper update”
Confirm the plugin’s supported Minecraft and Paper versions, read its release notes, and test on a staging copy. Paper’s bundled Spark behavior and configuration keys can change, so verify the current build rather than copying an old guide’s settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

| Observed symptom | First action | Possible follow-up |
|---|---|---|
| Spikes when players explore new areas | Profile with Spark during exploration. | Pregenerate the planned area with Chunky before opening it to players. |
| Lag around animal farms or mob halls | Profile entity work and inspect the location. | Use MobLimiter or FarmLimiter for a measured local overload; adjust Paper ranges if broad ticking is responsible. |
| Ground items accumulate | Confirm item entities are expensive in Spark. | Use ClearLag only with a tested whitelist and clear player warnings. |
| Villager-heavy area slows the server | Profile villagers and test activation behavior. | Adjust activation settings cautiously; do not disable inactive-villager ticking if trade restocking must remain Vanilla-like. |
| Large build operation causes pauses | Profile during the edit. | Test FAWE for asynchronous editing, treating the benefit as workload-specific. |
| No clear hotspot appears | Capture a longer profile at peak load and check host CPU, memory, and disk metrics. | Investigate the dominant contributor before installing any optimization plugin. |
Maintenance after the initial fix
Lag changes as worlds fill, farms expand, player counts rise, and server software updates. Keep Spark available, profile after major world changes, and review activation settings after Paper upgrades. Re-test plugins whenever the Minecraft or Paper version changes, and remove tools that no longer address a measured bottleneck.
The most defensible performance strategy in 2026 is therefore conservative: Spark for evidence, Chunky for known generation spikes, narrowly configured entity controls for proven entity overload, and Paper’s documented activation ranges for broad ticking control. Percentage claims without reproducible benchmarks should not determine your configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Paper server need a lag-reduction plugin?
No. Paper 1.21 and later bundle Spark, and Paper’s built-in activation settings may be sufficient. Install an additional plugin only when a Spark profile identifies a problem it specifically addresses.
Is Chunky the same as the Chunky Pregenerator Fabric mod?
No. The Fabric mod is a third-party project that uses Chunky as a backend. On Paper, use the official Chunky plugin compatible with your server version.
Can I set every entity activation range to zero for maximum performance?
No. Zero or a negative value turns throttling off for that category, allowing normal ticking at any distance. This can increase CPU usage and should be used only after testing.
