There is no single best Palworld dedicated-server preset. Start with the shipped defaults, then adjust experience, capture, drops, combat, death, PvP, bases and administration for the way your group actually plays. The reliable process is to edit PalWorldSettings.ini, keep its OptionSettings=(...) entry on one line, and restart the server after every change.
What “best settings” means in Palworld
A cooperative server for a small group has different needs from a public survival server. A group that plays only on weekends may want faster experience and capture so progress is not lost to a long grind. A long-running world with regular players may prefer rates close to the shipped defaults. A competitive or role-play server may need stricter death and PvP rules even when gathering is accelerated.

Treat published presets as starting points, not universal answers. The values most guides agree are worth tuning fall into five groups:
- Progression rates: experience, capture, Pal spawn frequency and collection drops.
- Survival pressure: hunger and stamina depletion.
- Combat and difficulty: damage-defense multipliers for Pals and players.
- Death, PvP and bases: death penalties, friendly fire, player damage, camp limits and workers.
- Administration and networking: server identity, passwords, player capacity, port, RCON and REST API options.
Change one group at a time and have players test the result. That makes it possible to identify which setting caused an unexpected difficulty, exploit or performance problem.

Where PalWorldSettings.ini is stored
The file is inside the dedicated server’s saved configuration directory:

Some guides and server panels label the parent directory Configs rather than Config. Use the directory that exists in your actual installation; do not create a second, similarly named folder and expect the server to read it.
The target file is PalWorldSettings.ini. If it is missing, create it by copying DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini in the same server installation and renaming the copy. Edit the renamed copy. The default file is a template and should be kept unchanged so you can recover the original entries after a mistake.
Back up the world before changing settings
Stop the dedicated server cleanly before editing. Make a dated copy of both the configuration file and the world save. A settings change should not normally erase a world, but a backup gives you a way to restore the previous configuration if a typo prevents startup or produces an unwanted rule set.
- Record the current server version and the date of the change.
- Copy
PalWorldSettings.inibefore editing. - Back up the relevant save directory, not just the settings file.
- Tell players when the server will restart and what values are changing.
How to edit the file correctly
Palworld reads the settings under a script header followed by one OptionSettings=(...) assignment. Keep the header and assignment in the copied file:

It is an example, not a verified default or a guaranteed best preset. When working from the complete copied template, retain its other entries and change only the keys you intend to change.

- Keep the complete
OptionSettings=(...)expression on one physical line. An editor may visually wrap it, but do not insert carriage returns into the expression. - Preserve the exact key spelling and capitalization from the shipped template.
- Separate entries with commas and keep the closing parenthesis at the end of the line.
- Do not edit
DefaultPalWorldSettings.iniin place. - After saving, restart the dedicated server. Settings are loaded at startup, not continuously while the process is running.
Choose a starting profile by play style
Instead of copying a long preset blindly, decide what experience your group wants and adjust only the relevant axes.

Progression and resource rates
Experience: ExpRate
ExpRate controls how quickly experience is earned. A value above the baseline accelerates leveling for players and Pals; a lower value extends the progression curve. The commonly reported example of 1.200000 is a 20-percent increase relative to a baseline of 1.0, but it should not be treated as an official default or as a hard recommendation. Increase this first if players spend most of their sessions waiting for the next level rather than exploring or building.
Capture: PalCaptureRate
PalCaptureRate changes the likelihood that a capture attempt succeeds. Increasing it reduces repeated attempts and the associated resource cost. A guide’s example uses 1.500000. Decide whether rare Pals should still require preparation; if capture becomes too easy, lower this value rather than reducing every other progression rate.
Pal population: PalSpawnNumRate
PalSpawnNumRate affects how many wild Pals appear. More spawns can make searching and resource gathering faster, but it also increases activity the server must simulate. Raise it only after considering the number of connected players and the density of bases in the world.
Collection drops: CollectionDropRate
CollectionDropRate changes the quantity obtained from collection activities. The reported example uses 1.500000. This is often a better first adjustment for a time-limited group than raising every rate, because it shortens material runs without changing combat or capture difficulty.
Hunger and stamina depletion
The hunger and stamina entries use the misspelled word Decreace in their key names. Copy those names exactly from the shipped file; do not “correct” the spelling to Decrease. Lower depletion makes survival less demanding, while higher depletion makes food management and stamina planning more important. Because key names and defaults can vary with a game update, use the current template as the authority for the exact entries.

Combat and difficulty settings
PalDamageRateDefense
PalDamageRateDefense changes how much damage Pals receive in combat. Lower defense-rate values make Pals more resistant and therefore tankier; higher values make them easier to defeat. Change this independently from player damage so that a server can have durable Pals without making every player encounter equally punishing.
PlayerDamageRateDefense
PlayerDamageRateDefense applies the same type of adjustment to player survivability. Test it in a controlled fight after restarting. A small change can alter the value of armor, healing items and cooperative tactics, so publish the final value with the server rules.
Do not infer official ranges from a third-party table. The valid ranges and current defaults should be checked against the default file shipped with the same server version.
Death, PvP and friendly fire
DeathPenalty
DeathPenalty determines what a player loses on death. Community guides have reported a change from an early-access default of All to Item, but that historical report is not a substitute for checking the current patch. Verify the available value in your shipped configuration and test it with a disposable character or a planned group session.
bEnablePlayerToPlayerDamage
Enable this only when the server is intended to permit direct player-versus-player damage. On a cooperative server, leaving it disabled prevents accidental attacks from becoming a rules dispute.
bEnableFriendlyFire
Friendly fire is a separate switch. If your rules allow PvP but not accidental damage inside the same group, distinguish the two settings and test both directions. Explain the result in the server name, welcome message or rules page before inviting players.

Base camps, workers and server load
BaseCampMaxNum
BaseCampMaxNum is the server-wide cap for base camps. It is not a per-player allowance. A value that is comfortable for two guilds may be restrictive for a public server, while an unnecessarily high cap can encourage abandoned claims and make administration harder. Guides sometimes quote 128 as a default, but that figure is not confirmed here; use the value in the current template and increase it only when the group has a demonstrated need.
BaseCampWorkerMaxNum
BaseCampWorkerMaxNum limits workers assigned to a base. Raising it allows more automation, but it also increases server load. Increase it gradually, observe the effect during peak activity and avoid changing this setting at the same time as spawn and population rates. If the server becomes harder to operate after a worker increase, revert the change before trying another optimization.
Network and administrator settings
Keep identity, access and connectivity entries separate from gameplay tuning so a balance change cannot accidentally expose administration controls.

Apply and verify a change
- Announce a maintenance window and stop the dedicated server cleanly.
- Open the copied
PalWorldSettings.iniunder the correct Linux or Windows server directory. - Locate the single
OptionSettings=(...)line and change only the intended key. - Check commas, capitalization, decimal formatting and the final closing parenthesis. Confirm that the line has not been split by the editor.
- Save the file, start the server and wait until it finishes loading.
- Join with an administrator account and test the changed mechanic: gain experience, attempt a capture, inspect a drop, test damage or verify a PvP rule as appropriate.
- Record the working value and the server version in your change log before making another edit.
Use a small, repeatable test rather than relying on a player’s general impression. For example, if you changed collection drops, gather the same resource under comparable conditions; if you changed death behavior, verify exactly what is lost after a controlled death.

You edited the wrong file or folder
Confirm that the active installation is using Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer or Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer. Check for a panel-specific directory named Configs, and make sure the file is exactly PalWorldSettings.ini, not a text file with an extra extension.
You changed the template
If you edited DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini, copy it to PalWorldSettings.ini and repeat the change there. Keep the template untouched for future comparisons.

The server was not restarted
Stop and start the dedicated-server process after every settings edit. A live process does not reliably reread the file.

Look for a missing comma, an unmatched parenthesis, a misspelled key or a line break inside OptionSettings. Restore the backup, reapply one change and restart if the server refuses to load.
The world save retains an older setting
Existing worlds may also store options in WorldOption.sav. If a correctly edited and restarted configuration still appears to be ignored, inspect that save as part of the diagnosis. Back it up before changing or replacing anything; do not delete it casually, because it belongs to the world’s persistent state.
A patch changed a default or valid value
Compare the current shipped default file with your configuration after updates. A setting that worked on an earlier build may have a different default, spelling or accepted value on a later patch.
Version caveats and maintenance
Palworld’s defaults are version-sensitive. Reports from the 1.0-era period describe egg-hatching time falling from 72 hours in early access to one hour and the death penalty becoming less severe, from All to Item. Those reports should be treated as historical context only. Before publishing or enforcing a rule, inspect the default file shipped with the exact server patch you are running.

There is no single authoritative preset that makes every group happy, and community guides disagree on recommended values. Keep a documented baseline, change one variable or one related group at a time, and ask players to report a concrete example rather than simply saying that the server “feels different.” This approach makes your settings reproducible when the server is moved, restored or updated.
A practical change plan for a new server
- Start from an untouched copy of
DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini. - Set the server name, player password, separate administrator password, player cap and public port.
- Leave combat, death, PvP, camp and worker values at the current template values for the first test session.
- If progression is too slow, adjust one of
ExpRate,PalCaptureRateorCollectionDropRate, rather than increasing all three automatically. - If the world feels empty or overcrowded, test
PalSpawnNumRateseparately and watch the server during peak activity. - Decide on PvP and friendly fire before opening the server to players, then test both switches with consenting participants.
- Only after the group has established a normal population should you consider changing
BaseCampMaxNumorBaseCampWorkerMaxNum. - Save a known-good configuration after every successful restart and keep a short record of the patch, date and changed values.
The best dedicated-server settings are therefore a controlled baseline plus small, tested adjustments. The file location, one-line syntax and restart requirement are the parts to get exactly right; the numerical profile should follow your group’s schedule, tolerance for risk and expected population.
