Choose the file manager that belongs to your Linux desktop first. Dolphin is the best all-round starting point on KDE Plasma because it combines familiar navigation with split panes, configurable views and a documented network-share workflow. Nemo is the natural choice for Cinnamon and Linux Mint, GNOME Files (also called Nautilus) is the most coherent option on GNOME, and Thunar fits Xfce users who want a clean, quick-starting default. Choose Gnome Commander when keeping two directory panels visible is more important than desktop integration.
Linux lets you install more than one file manager, but replacing the bundled application can create friction in file dialogs, removable-device handling, bookmarks and desktop settings. The recommendations below focus on documented features and desktop fit, not unverified speed or popularity tests.
Quick comparison
| File manager | Best fit | Why choose it | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dolphin | KDE Plasma; users who want control | Split view, configurable path bar and views, session options, previews and documented SMB, NFS, FTP/SFTP and WebDAV access | Some older applications use their own file dialogs and may not show Dolphin network bookmarks |
| Nemo | Cinnamon and Linux Mint | Cinnamon’s official file manager with bookmarks, tabs, path-entry or breadcrumb navigation and configurable behavior | Feature lists from the original 1.0.0 project description are historical; check what your distribution build includes |
| GNOME Files (Nautilus) | GNOME | Integrated default with icon-grid, icon-list and tree-list views, tabs, search, previews, bookmarks, removable media and SMB guidance | It is designed around GNOME’s workflow rather than a permanently visible twin-panel layout |
| Thunar | Xfce; readers wanting a clean default | Xfce integration, simple interface and quick-start positioning, with optional plugins for extra functions | Bulk rename, archive actions, media tags, Samba sharing and some device functions may require separately installed plugins or packages |
| Gnome Commander | People who explicitly want two panels | Twin panels, tabs, filtering, advanced search, remote connections, comparison, renaming and an embedded terminal | It is a specialist choice, not the lowest-friction default for every desktop |
What changes when you move from Windows
Linux desktops already include graphical file managers, just as Windows includes File Explorer. The practical decision is therefore not whether Linux can browse files, but which application best matches your desktop and the way you work.
Desktop integration comes first
Dolphin is KDE’s default, GNOME Files is GNOME’s default, Nemo is Cinnamon’s official manager and Thunar is designed for Xfce. The bundled application normally appears in the desktop’s menus, handles removable drives in the expected way, supplies the standard open and save dialogs, and understands that environment’s bookmarks and services. Starting with that application avoids solving problems you did not have.

Navigation that feels familiar
Windows switchers commonly look for a sidebar of places, a breadcrumb path, an editable address field, tabs and predictable back, forward, up and refresh controls. All five candidates provide much of that model, but expose it differently. Dolphin can switch between breadcrumbs and an editable location bar. GNOME Files offers a path bar, sidebar bookmarks and tabs. Nemo can switch between path entry and breadcrumbs, while its project documentation also describes opening locations in tabs. Gnome Commander keeps two locations visible at once instead of making a second window or split view necessary.
Control versus simplicity
GNOME Files and Thunar emphasize an integrated or clean experience. Dolphin exposes more configurable behavior, including startup choices, session restoration and pane switching. Nemo offers Cinnamon integration with configurable options. Gnome Commander assumes that advanced users will trade a denser interface for direct control over two locations, filters and file operations.
Moving files between locations
A single-pane browser is adequate for occasional copies. For repeated transfers, side-by-side views reduce window juggling. Dolphin’s split view can be enabled when needed; pressing Tab switches between its panes. Gnome Commander makes twin panels its central design, so it is the clearest choice when comparing directories or moving many files between them.

Windows PCs and NAS devices commonly expose SMB shares, while servers may use SFTP, FTP, WebDAV or NFS. Support depends on the file manager, installed system components and the server’s permissions and configuration. Thunar’s extra capabilities are not all present in every default installation because many are delivered as separate plugins.
Dolphin: the strongest general recommendation on KDE Plasma
KDE identifies Dolphin as its default file manager and maintains an official handbook covering navigation, views, search, storage, previews and configuration. For a Windows switcher, its main advantage is balance: the basic workflow is conventional, but the application does not force you to stay with one layout.
Why choose Dolphin
- Two navigation modes: use breadcrumb navigation for orientation or switch to an editable location bar when you want to type or paste a path directly.
- Optional split view: keep source and destination visible together, then use Tab to move focus between panes.
- Configurable startup: choose how Dolphin opens and whether a previous session is restored.
- Adjustable views and previews: tune how folders and files are displayed rather than accepting a fixed layout.
- Broad documented remote support: KDE lists SMB, NFS, FTP/SFTP and WebDAV workflows.
These are documented capabilities, not a claim that Dolphin is objectively faster or more reliable than every alternative. Its strongest case is flexibility on Plasma.
Open a Windows or NAS share in Dolphin
- Open Dolphin and activate the location bar.
- Enter a server address such as
smb://192.168.50.72, replacing the example address with your server. - Browse the shares published by that server.
- Select the share and provide credentials when prompted.
- Add the share to Places if you want a reusable shortcut.
Access still depends on the account permissions and SMB configuration on the remote computer. If the server is not discovered, entering its address directly can be more dependable than browsing a network list.

KDE documents that some older applications use their own file dialogs instead of KDE’s dialog. Such an application may not display a network share bookmarked in Dolphin. In that case, the share may need to be mounted locally before the application can open it. This is an application-integration issue, not proof that Dolphin cannot reach the share.

Nemo: the native Cinnamon and Linux Mint choice
The Linux Mint Nemo project describes Nemo as Cinnamon’s official file manager and as free, open-source software. If you are selecting Cinnamon or using Linux Mint, Nemo is the lowest-friction place to start because it belongs to that desktop rather than being an add-on from another environment.
What Nemo provides
The project’s documented workflow includes bookmarks, back, forward, up and refresh controls, opening a terminal, file-operation progress, remote SSH access, FTP/MTP handling and a choice between path entry and breadcrumbs. Its current command manual documents opening locations in tabs. These functions map well to the habits many people bring from Windows: keep common folders bookmarked, paste a path when you know it, and open another location without losing the first.
The widely circulated feature list is attached to the historical Nemo 1.0.0 description. Do not assume that every item, plugin or protocol is identical in every current distribution build. Linux Mint and other distributions can patch, split or package components differently, so check the Nemo version and installed extensions offered by your system.

When Nemo is a better fit than Dolphin
Choose Nemo when Cinnamon panels, menus, desktop settings and removable-device behavior matter more than KDE-style customization. Installing Dolphin on Cinnamon is possible, but it introduces KDE libraries and a second set of conventions without solving a problem Nemo already handles for the desktop.
GNOME Files (Nautilus): the integrated GNOME workflow
GNOME calls its default manager Files; many applications and older guides still call it Nautilus. Knowing both names prevents confusion when a package, help page or forum answer uses “Nautilus” while the application menu says “Files.”
Views and everyday navigation
GNOME’s documentation covers icon-grid, icon-list and tree-list views, local and network search, removable media, launching applications, scripts and extensions. Tabs let you keep several locations in one window. The path bar and sidebar bookmarks provide the familiar alternatives of typing or clicking through a location. Pressing the Space bar previews supported files without opening a separate application.
Connect to a Windows share
- Open Files and choose the network or other-location area in the sidebar.
- Enter an address in the form
smb://servername/Share, replacing both names with your server and share. - Submit the address and enter credentials if the server requests them.
- Confirm that your account has permission to read or write the share.
The URL format gets you to the server; it cannot bypass permissions set on the Windows computer or NAS.
Current release information
GNOME’s application page reported Files/Nautilus 51.0.1 released on 2026-09-15. Release numbers change, so treat that as a dated reference rather than a permanent version promise. Your distribution may ship an older or differently patched build.

Who should select GNOME Files
Use it when you want GNOME’s menus, settings, file dialogs and removable-media behavior to feel like one system. It is not featureless: tabs, three view styles, previews, search, bookmarks, scripts and network access cover normal desktop work. Select another manager only when you have a specific need, such as a permanent twin-panel layout or a feature supplied by a plugin.
Thunar: a clean Xfce default with optional extensions
Xfce describes Thunar as a modern file manager designed to be fast and easy to use, with a clean interface and quick startup. That wording is the project’s design description, not an independent benchmark, so it should not be read as a measured speed ranking.
What the base application is good at
Thunar suits users who want a straightforward folder window, conventional navigation and tight Xfce integration without a large collection of visible controls. It is a sensible default on an Xfce installation and a reasonable choice for readers who prefer a less configurable interface.
Plan for plugins when you need more
Separate plugins can add bulk renaming, custom actions, archive creation and extraction, media-tag editing, Samba folder sharing and removable-device management. Related GVfs packages provide remote-filesystem support. Because these pieces are separately packaged, two computers running “Thunar” may expose different menus and protocols. Before following a guide, check which Thunar plugins and GVfs components your distribution has installed.
Current release information
Xfce documentation reports Thunar 4.21.7 released on 2026-10-10. That date is useful for identifying the release referenced here; distributions can lag behind the upstream version or apply their own patches.
Gnome Commander: choose it for permanent twin panels
Gnome Commander describes itself as a twin-panel graphical Linux file manager for more advanced users. Its defining feature is not a particular desktop environment but the two-panel workflow: source on one side, destination on the other.
Capabilities that set it apart
- Twin panels and tabs for keeping multiple locations visible.
- Quick filtering, advanced search and directory comparison.
- Remote connections to SSH, FTP, Windows shares and WebDAV.
- An internal text, hex and image viewer.
- Embedded terminal output, customizable shortcuts and bookmarks.
- Advanced renaming for batches of files.
This layout is useful for comparing project trees, sorting downloads, synchronizing manually reviewed folders or moving many files. It can feel denser than GNOME Files or Thunar, so it is better treated as a deliberate workflow choice than as a universal replacement.
Using Windows shares from Linux: what “supported” really means
Dolphin and GNOME Files both document direct SMB access. A typical address is smb://servername/Share; Dolphin documentation also shows entering a server address, selecting a share, authenticating and bookmarking it in Places. Whether the connection succeeds depends on the server’s SMB configuration, your credentials, firewall rules and share permissions.

File-manager access is not the same as application access
An image editor, office suite or older utility may use its own open/save dialog and may not know about a bookmark created in another desktop’s file manager. KDE specifically warns about older applications that do not include KDE’s bookmarked network locations. If a program cannot see a share that the file manager can browse, use that program’s own network options or mount the share locally according to your distribution’s documentation.
Check these items when a share fails
- Verify the server name or IP address and share name.
- Confirm that the Windows or NAS account has the required read or write permission.
- Check that the server is offering SMB, rather than a different protocol.
- Make sure your Linux installation includes the desktop’s remote-filesystem components.
- Test the same address in the file manager before troubleshooting an individual application.
Can you replace the bundled file manager?
Yes. Linux does not lock you to one graphical browser. You can install another manager and launch it whenever you choose. The catch is integration: the desktop may continue using its original application for file dialogs, desktop icons, removable drives, archive actions or network bookmarks.
When installing a second manager makes sense
- You use KDE Plasma but need Gnome Commander’s permanent twin panels for a specific job.
- You use GNOME and want a specialist batch-renaming or comparison workflow.
- You want to evaluate a different navigation model without changing the desktop itself.
When staying with the default is wiser
- You mainly browse local folders, copy files and open removable drives.
- You rely on the desktop’s standard open/save dialogs.
- You want network bookmarks and notifications to behave consistently across applications.
Try the alternative as a separate application first. Change default associations only after confirming that your desktop and the programs you use recognize the new manager’s locations and dialogs.

Common mistakes when choosing
Picking by a claimed speed ranking
The official descriptions reviewed here do not provide a head-to-head benchmark for startup time, memory use or file-operation speed. Thunar’s “fast and easy to use” wording is an Xfce design description, not comparative test data. Choose based on integration and workflow unless you have measurements from your own hardware.
Assuming every plugin is installed
Thunar’s archive, bulk-rename, Samba-sharing and media functions can depend on separate plugins. Nemo features can also vary by distribution build. Check your package manager’s installed components instead of assuming that a menu shown in a screenshot exists on your system.
Confusing a bookmark with a mounted filesystem
A file manager may browse a remote URL while another application expects a local path. If an application cannot open a bookmarked SMB location, that does not necessarily indicate a bad password or a broken share; it may require a mounted location or a different dialog.
Forcing an exact Explorer clone
Linux desktops borrow familiar ideas such as sidebars, breadcrumbs and tabs, but none of these applications is documented as a one-for-one Windows Explorer clone. Selecting the manager that matches your desktop produces fewer surprises than chasing an exact visual imitation.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Bottom line: match the manager to the desktop, then to the workflow
For most readers, the best Linux file manager is the one already integrated with the desktop they chose. Pick Dolphin on KDE Plasma when configurable views, split-pane work and network handling matter. Pick Nemo on Cinnamon or Linux Mint, GNOME Files on GNOME, and Thunar on Xfce. Choose Gnome Commander when twin panels and advanced controls are the reason you are changing tools. Installing another manager is practical, but desktop integration and application-specific file dialogs are the trade-offs to check before making it your default.
