Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
For routine VPS administration, five OpenSSH tools cover nearly everything: ssh opens a shell, ssh-keygen creates your key pair, ssh-copy-id installs the public key, scp copies files, and rsync synchronizes directories. Use ssh -v when a connection fails and ssh-keygen -R when a rebuilt server presents an obsolete host key.
Start by creating an Ed25519 key, install it, and prove that key login works in a second session. Only then change the SSH daemon configuration to disable passwords or restrict root access. Keeping the original session open while testing prevents a configuration mistake from locking you out.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What you need before connecting
You need the VPS hostname or IP address, a user account that is allowed to log in, and the SSH port. The standard port is commonly used, but a provider or administrator may have changed it. You also need an SSH client on your local computer. OpenSSH is normally available on Linux and macOS; Windows users can use an OpenSSH client where one is installed.
- Know the account name, such as
adminor another non-root user. - Have the server address, for example
vps.example.netor an IP address. - Confirm the port. Use the default when no alternate port was supplied; otherwise substitute the assigned number.
- Keep an existing working session open whenever you change server-side SSH settings.
Connect to a VPS with SSH
Use the account and host
The basic form is:
ssh user@host
Replace user and host with your values. On the first connection, SSH displays the server’s host-key fingerprint and asks whether to trust it. Confirm that fingerprint through a channel you trust before accepting it. Once accepted, the host key is stored locally and checked on later connections.

Connect on a non-standard port
Pass the port with a lowercase -p:
ssh -p 2222 user@host
A port number is part of the connection details, not part of the hostname. If you omit it, the client tries its default and can report a timeout or connection refusal even though the VPS is running.
Create a secure SSH key pair
Preferred option: Ed25519
Run ssh-keygen on your local computer, not in a shell on the VPS:
ssh-keygen -t ed25519 -C "you@example.com"
The program asks where to save the private key and whether to protect it with a passphrase. Accepting the suggested location is convenient if you have no existing key there. A passphrase protects the private key if the file is copied from your computer; it does not get sent to the server during login.
The resulting pair has a private key and a public key. Keep the private key confidential. The public key is the one you install on the VPS and can be shared with the server administrator.
Compatibility option: RSA
For an older SSH implementation that does not support Ed25519, create a 4096-bit RSA key:

ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096
Ed25519 is the modern default because it is fast and strong. RSA 4096 is a fallback for legacy compatibility, not a reason to replace an otherwise working Ed25519 setup.

Use ssh-copy-id
With password access still enabled, send the public key to the account:
ssh-copy-id user@host
For a server listening on port 2222, include the lowercase port option:
ssh-copy-id -p 2222 user@host
The utility adds the public key to the account’s authorized_keys file. It may ask for the account password once; subsequent logins can use the key instead.
When ssh-copy-id is unavailable
Some Windows PowerShell installations do not include ssh-copy-id. Use a manual installation instead: display or open the public-key file created by ssh-keygen, copy its complete single line, connect using the account’s existing password, and append that line to the account’s ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file on the VPS. Preserve the line without wrapping or adding characters. The private key must remain only on your local computer.

Test key login before changing security settings
Open a second terminal window and connect again with the same account:
ssh user@host
Use the port option if required. A successful login without a password prompt confirms that the server can read the public key and your client can use the matching private key. Do not close the original session until this test succeeds and you have tested any later configuration change.
If you have several private keys, identify the intended one explicitly with the SSH client’s identity option, for example ssh -i /path/to/private_key user@host. Protect the file and never paste its private contents into a ticket, chat, or server configuration.
Copy individual files with scp
scp is the straightforward choice for a one-off transfer. The direction is determined by which side of the colon contains the remote host.
| Task | Command |
|---|---|
| Upload one local file | scp file user@host:/path |
| Download one remote file | scp user@host:/path/file . |
| Upload a directory and its contents | scp -r dir user@host:/path |
| Use a non-standard port | scp -P 2222 file user@host:/path |
Notice the uppercase -P in scp. This differs from the lowercase -p used by ssh and ssh-copy-id. Quote a local or remote path if it contains spaces, and make sure the destination account can write to the target directory.

Choose scp for simple, complete copies
- It is easy to read and suitable for a few files or a one-time deployment.
- The recursive form copies a directory tree, but it does not maintain an ongoing synchronization relationship.
- For a large directory that you will copy repeatedly, use
rsyncinstead so unchanged data is not retransmitted.
Synchronize directories with rsync over SSH
Run an incremental synchronization
The common SSH transport form is:
rsync -avz -e ssh src/ host:dst/
The trailing slash on src/ means “copy the contents of this directory.” Without it, the source directory itself may become a directory inside the destination. The command compares source and destination and sends only changes, which makes repeated deployments faster than copying everything again.
-aenables archive-style recursive copying and preservation behavior.-vprints what is being processed.-zcompresses data during transit.-e sshtellsrsyncto use SSH as its transport.
If the SSH daemon uses another port, pass that port through the SSH command, for example:
rsync -avz -e "ssh -p 2222" src/ user@host:dst/
Preview changes with a dry run
Before modifying the destination, use:
rsync -avzn -e ssh src/ user@host:dst/
The -n option performs a dry run. Review the file list and destination path, then rerun without -n only when the result is what you expect.
Understand the danger of –delete
rsync --delete removes destination files that are absent from the source. That can be useful when the destination must exactly mirror a build directory, but it can also erase uploads or manually created files. Always perform a dry run first, verify the source and destination sides, and use deletion only when that mirror behavior is intentional.
Diagnose a connection that fails
Read verbose SSH output
Add -v to see the client’s negotiation and authentication progress:

ssh -v user@host
The output helps identify whether the failure occurs while resolving the host, opening the network connection, verifying the host key, offering a private key, or authenticating the account. Do not publish the complete output if it contains internal hostnames, usernames, or other sensitive details.
Resolve a host-key warning after a rebuild
A VPS reinstall can legitimately generate a new host key. If the client says that the host identification has changed, do not blindly bypass the warning: first verify that the address now points to the rebuilt server and that the change was expected. Then remove the old local entry:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
ssh-keygen -R hostname
Reconnect and verify the new fingerprint before accepting it. This command removes the saved entry for the specified hostname; repeat the check for an IP address if you normally connect by IP.
Separate authentication errors from network errors
- A timeout or refusal usually occurs before a username or key is evaluated; check the host, port, firewall, and whether the SSH service is listening.
- A password prompt when you expected key authentication means the key may not be installed for that account, the client may be offering a different private key, or the server may reject public-key authentication.
- A host-key mismatch is a trust-record problem, not a reason to disable host-key checking.
Harden the SSH daemon safely
Locate and edit the server configuration
Server-side SSH settings are in /etc/ssh/sshd_config. Edit the file with administrative privileges and make a backup or otherwise preserve the previous contents so you can restore a known-good configuration.
Settings that control login methods
| Directive | Purpose | Typical hardening choice |
|---|---|---|
PasswordAuthentication |
Controls password-based SSH authentication. The OpenBSD configuration reference lists yes as the default. |
Set to no only after key login works in a separate session. |
PubkeyAuthentication |
Controls public-key authentication. | Keep it enabled with yes when using SSH keys. |
PermitRootLogin |
Controls direct remote root logins. | no blocks them; prohibit-password allows key-based root login while rejecting password authentication; yes permits root login according to other authentication rules. |
The accepted PermitRootLogin values also include forced-commands-only. Distribution defaults differ: for example, RHEL 10 uses prohibit-password by default, while defaults on other releases may differ. Check the documentation and effective configuration on the actual VPS rather than assuming one distribution’s behavior applies everywhere.
Apply restrictions only where intended
OpenSSH supports Match blocks, allowing directives such as PasswordAuthentication and PermitRootLogin to be scoped to an address or other connection criteria. Place and indent these blocks carefully because settings inside a Match section apply only to connections that satisfy its condition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUse a safe change sequence
- Generate and install the key.
- Prove key login in a second terminal while the original session remains open.
- Set
PubkeyAuthentication yesand, if appropriate for your policy,PasswordAuthentication no. - Choose a root policy:
PermitRootLogin nofor no direct root SSH, orprohibit-passwordwhen key-only root access is deliberately required. - Validate the file with
sshd -t. The exact binary path and available validation behavior can vary, so confirm the command on the target distribution. - Restart the SSH service using the service name supplied by that distribution, commonly
systemctl restart sshor ansshd-named service. - Test a fresh connection immediately. Keep the old session until the new policy is confirmed.
If validation reports an error, do not restart the daemon. Correct the syntax or restore the last working configuration first. A service-name mismatch can also make a restart command fail even when the configuration itself is valid.
Quick Recap
Choosing the right command
| Need | Best starting command | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Open an interactive shell | ssh |
Direct remote administration. |
| Create credentials | ssh-keygen |
Creates a local public/private key pair. |
| Install a public key | ssh-copy-id |
Adds the key to the remote account’s authorized keys. |
| Copy a few files once | scp |
Simple file and recursive directory transfers. |
| Repeat or mirror transfers | rsync |
Sends only changes and supports dry runs. |
| Investigate a failed connection | ssh -v |
Shows connection and authentication stages. |
| Replace a stale host record | ssh-keygen -R |
Removes an old known-host entry after verification. |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Disabling passwords before testing the key in another session.
- Using lowercase
-pwithscp; its port option is uppercase-P. - Installing the private key instead of the public key. Only the public key belongs in
authorized_keys. - Running
rsync --deletewithout a dry run and a confirmed source/destination direction. - Deleting a changed host key without checking whether the VPS was actually rebuilt or reassigned.
- Assuming a root-login default or SSH service name from another Linux distribution applies to this VPS.
