For a compatible Intel or AMD laptop that you want to run directly, FydeOS for PC is the strongest general-purpose choice among these six builds. If your laptop already runs Linux and you only want Android apps, Waydroid is the better fit: it runs Android in a container rather than replacing the laptop’s operating system. Neither choice is universal, so check hardware support and test the features you rely on before committing to an installation.
The rankings below come from a documentation-based 2026 comparison, not laptop-by-laptop testing. Its scores are editorial ratings, not performance benchmarks or guarantees that a build will work on your particular device.
How the six options rank
| Rank | Build | Comparison score | Best fit | Standing in the comparison |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | FydeOS for PC | 7.50/10 | Android apps on a compatible PC running FydeOS directly | Current general-purpose candidate |
| 2 | Waydroid | 6.65/10 | Android apps on a laptop already running Linux | Current container-based option |
| 3 | Bliss OS 16 | 4.60/10 | Trying a legacy Android build alongside Windows | Public images paused; archived builds lack updates and official support |
| 4 | Android-x86 9.0-r2 | 4.50/10 | Limited legacy experimentation | Android 9 Pie release from March 25, 2020 |
| 5 | Android-x86 8.1-r6 | 4.35/10 | Legacy hardware experimentation | Android 8.1 Oreo release from June 23, 2021 |
| 6 | Bliss OS for Surface | 4.10/10 | Supported Surface hardware | Surface-focused image dated October 13, 2024 |
The scores are from TechLila’s 2026 editorial comparison. Its methodology weights laptop hardware support at 35%, maintenance recency at 30%, sleep and battery behavior at 20%, and installation alongside Windows at 15%. These are comparison ratings, not measured speed or battery-life results.

These options do not all install Android in the same way. The distinction determines whether you replace your laptop’s system, keep Linux as the host, or use a ChromeOS-style system with an Android subsystem.

- Direct PC installation: FydeOS for PC is the leading current candidate in this group. Older Android-x86 and Bliss OS builds are also PC-oriented, but their age or maintenance status makes them less suitable as everyday systems.
- Android inside Linux: Waydroid runs Android in a Linux container. It is not a bootable Android OS image and does not replace Linux, the laptop’s firmware, or its ordinary host drivers.
- ChromeOS-style system: ChromeOS Flex can be a lightweight operating system for compatible PCs, but it is not a way to run Android apps. Google states that Android apps “aren’t supported on ChromeOS Flex devices.”
What to know about each build
FydeOS for PC: best direct-install candidate
FydeOS v23, released August 20, 2026, upgrades its Android subsystem to Android 13. The release note says fyDroid runs by default, with no manual setup required. FydeOS offers hardware-matched PC variants rather than one image intended for every laptop.
Check the processor and graphics before choosing a variant. FydeOS says its Android subsystem requires SSE4.2; its boot guidance lists 2 GB of RAM as a browser-use minimum and recommends 4 GB or more for Android apps. NVIDIA graphics are not officially supported. Some Intel-plus-AMD configurations may work with the Intel Modern variant, but behavior depends on the specific models.

There is also a sleep-and-wake caveat: FydeOS v22 notes that some laptops may fail to wake after the lid is closed and suggests disabling “Sleep when lid is closed.” Treat this as a risk to check on your own laptop, not a universal fault.

The comparison reports Waydroid 1.6.3, dated May 28, 2026, with an Android 13 image. It suits someone who already uses Linux and wants Android in a container, not someone looking for a separate Android laptop installation. Before setting it up, check Waydroid’s current requirements for your Linux distribution, graphics hardware, and Wayland session.

Bliss OS 16: archived, not a current daily-driver pick
The comparison describes Bliss OS 16 as an option that could be tried from a live USB and installed as an image on a Windows partition. However, it reports public images paused and archived builds without updates or official support. Bliss documentation targets x86_64-v2, so an older 64-bit processor may not qualify. The comparison also flags Wi-Fi problems on some devices and root or debugging workarounds for touchpad or touch-orientation issues; do not assume those fixes will be straightforward.
Android-x86 9.0-r2: a dated Android 9 port
This release is based on Android 9 Pie and dates to March 25, 2020. Its release note documents a UEFI boot fix; the comparison also reports a Linux RPM route and suspend and battery features. Those details do not establish current security or app compatibility. Do not treat the build as suitable for banking or sensitive work without a separate, current security assessment.

Android-x86 8.1-r6: a narrower legacy option
Released June 23, 2021, this Android 8.1 Oreo build is reported to have both 32-bit and 64-bit ISO routes. Its older Android base limits its usefulness for current apps and security expectations, making it a niche experiment rather than a modern general-purpose laptop system.

Bliss OS for Surface: check the exact model
This build is intended for supported Surface hardware, not all laptops or all Surface devices. Bliss documentation describes patches from the linux-surface project and an Intel Precise Touch processing daemon. The comparison’s latest located image is dated October 13, 2024; verify the exact Surface model before considering it.

Check compatibility before installing
Even a build that starts successfully may not handle a laptop’s wireless networking, graphics, touchpad, touchscreen, convertible rotation, audio, sleep, or lid wake correctly. Check the candidate against your exact hardware and test the functions you need in a live environment where one is available.
- Processor and graphics: Confirm that the chosen build supports the laptop’s CPU and GPU; for FydeOS, pay particular attention to SSE4.2, the correct PC variant, and its NVIDIA limitation.
- Input and display: Test Wi-Fi, audio, touchpad, touchscreen, display behavior, and rotation on convertible hardware.
- Sleep and battery: Close and reopen the lid, then check wake behavior and battery reporting rather than assuming they work because the system booted.
- Boot and installation: Confirm firmware and boot-mode requirements for the chosen project. FydeOS’s guidance requires UEFI for the developer-mode features it describes; that is not the same as a universal installation guarantee.
- Data protection: Back up the laptop before changing partitions or installing another system. Do not assume that an installation beside Windows is supported or risk-free for your device.
Can you dual boot Android and Windows on a laptop?
Possibly, but “Android” does not identify one installer or one dual-boot method. The comparison describes Bliss OS 16 as installable as an image on a Windows partition and usable from a live USB, but that is an archived build with no updates or official support. It does not establish a current, broadly compatible dual-boot method for every laptop. Check the selected project’s current instructions for your exact hardware, and back up your data before changing partitions or boot settings.
Does ChromeOS Flex support Google Play or Android apps?
No. Google explicitly says Android apps are not supported on ChromeOS Flex devices. Flex is a separate ChromeOS-style option, not one of the Android builds ranked above.
Google’s requirements, as accessed October 7, 2026, are an Intel or AMD x86-64 processor, 4 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, USB boot capability, and administrator access to BIOS settings. Google guarantees functionality only on certified models; performance, functionality, and stability on non-certified models are not guaranteed. Its installer requires an 8 GB or larger USB drive. Creating the installer erases that drive, and installing Flex erases the target device, so back up both first.
Why other names are not in this ranking
PrimeOS 3.0 is presented by Primebook as Primebook’s operating system for laptops, but the comparison did not establish it as a generally downloadable build for arbitrary PC laptops. It would be misleading to treat unofficial downloads as verified PC installers. For Phoenix OS, Remix OS, and openFyde, the comparison did not establish a current project-owned page confirming a release with Android app support. That leaves their current status unresolved here; it is not proof that no files or community builds exist.
