First identify how your Claude Code account is billed: a Claude subscription, Anthropic Console/API usage, or an enterprise cloud provider. The monitoring and cost controls depend on that route. Anthropic’s available documentation does not establish whether Claude Code cloud sessions have a separate usage meter or billing model, so check the current usage and billing details for your own account before assuming a session-level cost display exists.
Identify your billing route
Claude Code can be set up with Anthropic Console authentication, a Claude Pro or Max subscription, or an enterprise platform such as Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI. These routes may have different account dashboards and billing arrangements; the setup guide lists the available options but does not provide a single cloud-session usage view for all of them. See Anthropic’s Claude Code setup guide.
- Claude Pro or Max: Start with the subscription account and its current plan usage information. Do not assume API pricing or Console usage displays describe subscription use.
- Anthropic Console/API: Check usage information in the Anthropic Console and consult current API pricing.
- Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI: Check the relevant provider account’s usage and billing information, and confirm how your organization configured Claude Code.
Monitor Anthropic Console/API usage
Anthropic’s pricing documentation says API billing is monthly and based on actual usage, with usage tracking available in the Anthropic Console. Open the Console’s current usage information to review the account’s recorded usage; the documentation cited here does not specify a stable menu path, so use the current Console navigation. The same page lists prices by model and token type, but rates can change. Confirm the live Anthropic pricing documentation rather than relying on an older rate table.
What is known about cloud-session usage
Anthropic’s available documentation does not establish whether Claude Code cloud sessions expose a dedicated usage meter, show a per-session cost, or bill differently from other use under the account. Check the current Claude Code product and account billing documentation, and verify with the account or provider that actually invoices you. Until that is clear, do not treat a local CLI usage view or an API usage page as proof of what a cloud session has consumed.

Set team-level monitoring and controls
For organizations seeking centralized visibility, Anthropic’s gateway guidance describes gateways as a way to track usage across teams or projects and apply budgets and rate limits. A gateway is an additional layer to evaluate and configure; it does not by itself establish how a particular cloud session is billed.
Anthropic’s documentation names LiteLLM as an implementation example, while stating that it does not endorse, maintain, or audit that third-party project. Before adopting any gateway, review its security, deployment, logging, and operational requirements. See Anthropic’s LLM gateway configuration guide.

Understand the limit provided by --max-turns
The CLI reference describes --max-turns as a limit on agentic turns when Claude Code runs in non-interactive mode. It does not document this option as a spending cap or a token-total limit. Use it only to bound the number of turns in that mode; do not rely on it to prevent a particular dollar amount of charges. Consult the Claude Code CLI reference for the current command details.
